Control over pulsed operation modes of an erbium-doped fibre laser passively mode-locked via nonlinear polarisation rotation

We have experimentally demonstrated the possibility of controlling pulse generation modes of an erbium-doped fibre ring laser operating in the anomalous dispersion regime and passively mode-locked via nonlinear polarisation rotation. It has been shown that individual adjustment of the pump power and intracavity polarisation controllers leads to changes in pulse generation mode, without changing the cavity. We have evaluated the key spectral, temporal and energetic characteristics of the observed pulse generation modes. (control of laser radiation parameters. active media)

Second-harmonic generation in zinc blende crystals under combined action of femtosecond optical and strong terahertz fields

The influence of a short intense (with an electric field strength up to 250 kV cm{sup −1}) terahertz (THz) pulse on the generation of second harmonic (SH) of Ti : sapphire laser radiation in crystals of zinc blende type (InAs and GaAs), characterised by nonzero bulk quadratic susceptibility, is investigated. It is experimentally shown for InAs(100) that, in the case of s-polarised first and second harmonics, an application of s-polarised THz field changes significantly the SH signal. The THz field-induced azimuthal dependence of the SH signal is in good agreement with the results of theoretical calculation within a phenomenological approach. The dependence of the SH signal on the delay time between the optical and THz pulses is investigated. This dependence for the GaAs crystal repeats the envelope of the THz pulse intensity, whereas in the case of InAs crystal there is a significant discrepancy, caused by the nonlinear dynamics of strong THz field in InAs. Kinetics of the luminescence decay of Fe{sup 2+} impurity centres in polycrystalline ZnSe upon excitation by an electron beam

The kinetics of the decay of the luminescence of Fe{sup 2+} ions is measured at nitrogen temperature in polycrystalline ZnSe excited by a short pulse of accelerated electrons. The time dependence of the luminescence intensity differs from the exponential one, observed upon excitation of luminescence by a short light pulse. The obtained nonexponential dependence is theoretically described. The explanation is based on the quenching effect of the excited state of the Fe{sup 2+} ion by free electrons of the volume charge of the current of accelerated electrons in the sample (Auger effect). It was shown that the relaxation of the volume charge after the electron-accelerating voltage is removed makes a significant contribution to the decay kinetics of the impurity luminescence. (paper)

BaGa{sub 2}GeS{sub 6} and BaGa{sub 2}GeSe{sub 6} crystals for nonlinear optical frequency conversion

We analyse the functional capabilities of new crystals, BaGa{sub 2}GeS{sub 6} (BGGS) and BaGa{sub 2}GeSe{sub 6} (BGGSe), which are used for nonlinear optical frequency conversion in their transparency range. The wavelengths at which maximum conversion efficiencies can be obtained and the tuning range for difference-frequency generation are found. It is shown that there are wavelength combinations at which the effective nonlinearity coefficient varies only slightly in a wide frequency band. (nonlinear optical phenomena)

Analysis of laser-induced modification of collagen structure using nonlinear optical microscopy

Nonlinear optical microscopy is used to monitor changes in the collagen structure of patellar ligament after IR laser heating up to a temperature of 60 °C. Pre-denaturation modification of the tissue matrix exhibits specific properties and consists in splitting of initially parallel fibre bundles into array of divergent fibres. Image processing employing Fast Fourier transform analysis is used for characterising images of the fibre structure and determining the collagen orientation index. An increase in manifestation of laser-induced disordering with an increase in IR laser radiation power from 0.3 to 2 W is accompanied by a decrease in the collagen orientation index. The specific disorganisation of the collagen tissue structure during laser heating is supposed to be due to fast speed and local action of the laser heating, which leads to mechanical distortions of the structural elements of tissue matrix. Effect of focused nanosecond laser pulse irradiation on microtribological properties of diamond-like films

We have examined the effect of focused nanosecond laser pulses on the formation and tribological properties of microstructures in the form of a matrix of craters produced in a – C : H : Si : O diamond-like films (DLFs), both undoped and doped with tungsten. The studies are performed by scanning probe microscopy (SPM) using SPM probes of standard design with a tip and probes without a tip (tipless-type probes). A special procedure is developed for assessing the wettability (contact angle) of individual sections of the laser-induced microstructure by the local adhesion force. According to estimates, the material inside the crater becomes softer and more hydrophobic as a result of laser irradiation. This is manifested to the greatest extent in tungsten-doped DLFs, where the crater walls are arranged like terraces formed by ‘nanoflakes’, i.e. grains of the substance. Scanning of microstructures with a tipless probe in the regime of lateral force microscopy demonstrates a decrease in friction in the crater area. Soft X-ray and EUV emission spectra of beryllium plasma produced by neodymium-glass laser radiation with broad frequency and angular spectra

We present the results of an experimental study of soft X-ray (SXR) and extreme ultraviolet emission spectra of the plasma produced by exposing a plane solid beryllium target to laser radiation with broad frequency and angular spectra. SXR lines up to 1s – 9p of Be IV as well as the plasma continuum are recorded for a laser focal-spot intensity of 5.3 × 10{sup 13} W cm{sup −2}. To model the SXR beryllium plasma spectra, simulations are carried out using the INDHAUS programme and the FLYCHK code in the framework of local thermodynamic equilibrium model, which agree nicely with experimentally obtained results. Peculiarities of the formation of photonic nanojets by a matrix of dielectric microtoroids

We report the results of theoretical modelling of photonic nanojets (PNJs) formed by laser radiation scattering on a single-layer ordered assembly of dielectric microtoroids placed on the surface of a transparent matrix (silicone film). Using the method of computational electrodynamics (FDTD), the main PNJ parameters (length, width, peak intensity) are analysed under the conditions of mutual influence of the light fields of neighbouring microparticles. It is shown that the main factor affecting the PNJ characteristics under study is the spatial configuration of the radiation-scattering particle, namely, the internal diameter of its cross section. It is found that for certain configurations of toroid placement in a cluster, a PNJ ensemble is implemented with parameters significantly better than those for a single toroid. (paper)

Heat transfer in water under laser heating through fibres for endovenous laser coagulation

We report the results of studying heat transfer in water heated by a cw laser with wavelengths of 1.55 and 1.94 μm through optical fibres with end-face and radial outputs. It is shown that, depending on the power and wavelength of the radiation, heat transfer is implemented via convection, bubble boiling, or explosive boiling and occurs asymmetrically, mainly in the forward − upward direction for the fibre with the end-face output and upward for the radial output. Role of water vapour in the absorption of nanosecond 266-nm laser pulses by atmospheric air

The absorption of the Nd : YAG fourth harmonic in air and binary mixtures of water vapour with nitrogen and oxygen at atmospheric pressure has been measured as a function of pulse energy (peak intensity). The mixtures obtained by adding equal amounts of water vapour to dry nitrogen and oxygen have been found to differ significantly in absorption. Preliminary quantitative data have been obtained for two- and three-photon absorption cross sections of water and oxygen molecules: σ{sup (2)}(H{sub 2}O) = (4 ± 1) ± 10{sup –49} cm{sup 4} s and σ{sup (3)}(O{sub 2}) = (5.6 ± 1.4) ± 10{sup –78} cm{sup 6} s{sup 2}. The absorption of 266-nm pulses with peak intensities from 0.05 to 2 GW cm{sup –2} in the near-surface atmosphere has been shown to be determined by two-photon absorption in water vapour and three-photon absorption in oxygen. In moist air containing 1 % water vapour, the absorption coefficient for 266-nm laser pulses exceeds that in dry air by four to five times. There is no absorption in nitrogen. We have developed a technique for photoacoustic measurements of multiphoton absorption cross sections in single-component gases and gas mixtures. (paper)

Optically pumped semiconductor laser based on a type-II CdS/ZnSe heterostructure

An optically pumped semiconductor laser based on a type-II CdS/ZnSe nanoheterostructure containing 10 quantum wells (QWs) was studied. The structure was grown by metal-organic vapour phase epitaxy on a GaAs substrate. The lifetime of electron-hole pairs at a low pump level was measured by luminescence decay to be ∼0 ns. The peak power of the microcavity semiconductor laser at room temperature and longitudinal pumping by a repetitively pulsed N{sub 2} laser was 7.2 W at a wavelength of 514 nm. The relatively low laser slope efficiency (0.35 %) is explained by amplified spontaneous emission propagating along the structure. The peak power and efficiency of the laser in the case of transverse pumping increase to 70 W and 3.5 %, respectively. (lasers)

The influence of waveguide doping on the output characteristics of AlGaAs/GaAs lasers

The influence of doping of waveguide layers on the output characteristics of lasers based on AlGaAs/GaAs double separate-confinement heterostructures is analysed. The heterostructures with narrow and broadened waveguides are studied. Samples of laser diode bars with undoped and doped waveguide layers are experimentally fabricated and compared. It is shown that the latter type of structures with a broadened waveguide allows one to increase the output power of the laser diode bars by 10 % – 15 %, all other conditions being equal. Spectroscopic study of GdVO{sub 4} : Yb + Er crystals

GdVO{sub 4} crystals doped with different erbium and ytterbium concentrations have been grown in order to study their spectroscopic and kinetic properties and identify the nature of active centres in them. Their polarised transmission and luminescence spectra have been used to construct energy level diagrams of the Er{sup 3+} ion. The lifetime of the lower level of the {sup 4}I{sub 11/2} excited-state multiplet has been shown to decrease markedly with increasing ytterbium concentration. Inequivalent erbium centres have been observed to form in the crystals with increasing ytterbium concentration. (paper)

Rabi spectroscopy of the clock transition in thulium atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice

The clock transition at a wavelength of 1.14 μm in thulium atoms in an optical lattice in the Lamb – Dick regime is studied. The capture of thulium atoms makes it possible to suppress completely both the transition broadening due to the first-order Doppler effect and the shift of the transition frequency caused by the recoil effect. The excitation spectra of sideband oscillation frequencies and Rabi oscillations of population between the clock transition levels upon resonance excitation are investigated. (paper)

Generation of a quasi-static magnetic field by a circularly polarised laser pulse due to tunnelling gas ionisation

We present a theoretical model of the quasi-static magnetic field generation in a laser channel, which is formed behind the front of a short laser pulse that ionises a gas. The generation of a magnetic field is caused by the appearance of the electron pressure anisotropy during tunnelling ionisation of atoms. In the considered case of subrelativistic laser light intensities, the generated magnetic field can reach ∼1 MG with an energy transformation ratio of about 1 %, which paves the way for identifying the proposed mechanism when use is made of a wide class of ultrashort pulse lasers. Influence of growth temperature of KTiOAsO{sub 4} single crystals on their physicochemical parameters and formation of domain structures

A potassium titanyl arsenate (KTiOAsO{sub 4}, KTA) crystal 50 × 80 × 60 mm in size has been grown by upgraded Czochralski method from flux (TGGS) with a decrease in temperature from 900 to 770 °C during pulling. It is shown that the spectroscopic properties of the parts of KTA crystals grown at 900 and 770 °C are close, whereas the electrical conductivity of the low-temperature (770 °C) KTA part turned out to be an order of magnitude lower than that of the high-temperature part. Visualisation of the domain structure by second-harmonic generation microscopy revealed a more efficient domain intergrowth (throughout the sample) in the low-temperature KTA, which is important for forming a regular domain structure (RDS) in a KTA-based nonlinear optical element. It is established that the quantum efficiency of parametric generation of light in the RDS formed in low-temperature KTA is several times higher than in the case of high-temperature KTA. The results obtained are important for optimising RDS parameters. (paper)

Lasing efficiency of krypton ions in the (8 – 14)-nm band upon pulsed laser excitation

The emission spectra of krypton plasma in the range of 8 – 14 nm upon excitation of a pulsed gas jet by 1.06-mm Nd : YAG laser radiation with a pulse energy of 0.85 J, pulse duration of 5.2 ns, and repetition rate of 10 Hz are investigated. The krypton emission spectrum is a wide (8 – 14 nm) band, peaking at 10.3 nm, which is formed by a series of much narrower lines. The observed lines are identified, and the fraction of laser pulse energy converted into the (8 – 14)-nm emission band and emitted into half-space (2π sr) is determined. The maximum conversion efficiency is found to be 21 %. The expected throughputs of lithographic systems with sources based on Sn, Xe, and Kr ions for different wavelengths, corresponding to the emission peaks of ions of these materials, are compared. Spectroscopy of atoms in an optical dipole trap using spectrally selective heating by a probe laser field

Spectral properties of atoms localised in an optical dipole trap are studied using the method of spectrally selective heating by a probe field. The method is based on measuring the number of atoms in a trap after they interact with a probe field. The dependence of the number of atoms on the frequency of the probe field fully characterises the shift and width of the spectral absorption line of trapped atoms. (paper)
