Design and control of a manipulator for tetraplegics

A concept for the design of a manipulator for tetraplegics must be based on the mutual adaptation of system determining properties of the disabled operator, the manipulator, and the environment. Because the reduced capability of tetraplegics allows control of only three degrees of freedom at a time (instead of the normal fifteen), the structure of the environment must be adjusted. A manipulator is described which includes a three dimensional control stick operated by the lips and mouth.

Dynamic analysis and control of lightweight manipulators with flexible parallel link mechanisms

The flexible parallel link mechanism is designed for increased rigidity to sustain the buckling when it carries a heavy payload. Compared to a one link flexible manipulator, a two link flexible manipulator, especially the flexible parallel mechanism, has more complicated characteristics in dynamics and control. The objective of this research is the theoretical analysis and the experimental verification of dynamics and control of a two link flexible manipulator with a flexible parallel link mechanism. Nonlinear equations of motion of the lightweight manipulator are derived by the Lagrangian method in symbolic form to better understand the structure of the dynamic model. A manipulator with a flexible parallel link mechanism is a constrained dynamic system whose equations are sensitive to numerical integration error. This constrained system is solved using singular value decomposition of the constraint Jacobian matrix. The discrepancies between the analytical model and the experiment are explained using a simplified and a detailed finite element model. The step response of the analytical model and the TREETOPS model match each other well. The nonlinear dynamics is studied using a sinusoidal excitation. The actuator dynamic effect on a flexible robot was investigated. The effects are explained by the root loci and the Bode plot theoretically and experimentally. For the base performance for the advanced control scheme, a simple decoupled feedback scheme is applied.

Dynamic Analysis and Control of Lightweight Manipulators with Flexible Parallel Link Mechanisms

The objective is the theoretical analysis and the experimental verification of dynamics and control of a two link flexible manipulator with a flexible parallel link mechanism. Nonlinear equations of motion of the lightweight manipulator are derived by the Lagrangian method in symbolic form to better understand the structure of the dynamic model. The resulting equation of motion have a structure which is useful to reduce the number of terms calculated, to check correctness, or to extend the model to higher order. A manipulator with a flexible parallel link mechanism is a constrained dynamic system whose equations are sensitive to numerical integration error. This constrained system is solved using singular value decomposition of the constraint Jacobian matrix. Elastic motion is expressed by the assumed mode method. Mode shape functions of each link are chosen using the load interfaced component mode synthesis. The discrepancies between the analytical model and the experiment are explained using a simplified and a detailed finite element model.

An adaptive control scheme for a flexible manipulator

The problem of controlling a single link flexible manipulator is considered. A self-tuning adaptive control scheme is proposed which consists of a least squares on-line parameter identification of an equivalent linear model followed by a tuning of the gains of a pole placement controller using the parameter estimates. Since the initial parameter values for this model are assumed unknown, the use of arbitrarily chosen initial parameter estimates in the adaptive controller would result in undesirable transient effects. Hence, the initial stage control is carried out with a PID controller. Once the identified parameters have converged, control is transferred to the adaptive controller. Naturally, the relevant issues in this scheme are tests for parameter convergence and minimization of overshoots during control switch-over. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, simulation results are presented with an analytical nonlinear dynamic model of a single link flexible manipulator.

Modified hybrid control of robot manipulators for high precision assembly operations

This paper is concerned with applications of robot manipulators in high precision assembly tasks that can be successfully performed by employing a hybrid control scheme that independently controls force and position. A traditional hybrid control scheme is implemented in Cartesian space. In the modified hybrid control scheme introduced in this paper, the error driven control signals are expressed in joint space. This paper studies the implementation of the modified hybrid control scheme on a two-degree-of-freedom robot manipulator with a closed-kinematic chain mechanism. The performance of the traditional and modified hybrid control schemes is comparatively evaluated by computer simulation in terms of computation time and accuracy for several study cases.

Adaptive Cartesian coordinate control of space based robot manipulators

A Cartesian coordinate robot controller is presented for use when the mass properties of a load are unknown. The mass, center of mass, and moments of inertia of the end-effector are assumed unknown. All other inertial properties of the robot are assumed known. This knowledge of the parameters allows the control of the end-effector in a way similar to the use of reaction wheels to control the orientation of a satellite. This is the primary result of the controller. The basic method of the controller is similar to that used for terrestrial-based robot manipulators. The controller is demonstrated using a new simulation algorithm which is based on Hamilton's form of the equations of motion.

Decentralized adaptive control of robot manipulators with robust stabilization design

Due to geometric nonlinearities and complex dynamics, a decentralized technique for adaptive control for multilink robot arms is attractive. Lyapunov-function theory for stability analysis provides an approach to robust stabilization. Each joint of the arm is treated as a component subsystem. The adaptive controller is made locally stable with servo signals including proportional and integral gains. This results in the bound on the dynamical interactions with other subsystems. A nonlinear controller which stabilizes the system with uniform boundedness is used to improve the robustness properties of the overall system. As a result, the robot tracks the reference trajectories with convergence. This strategy makes computation simple and therefore facilitates real-time implementation.

Nonlinear interfaces for acceleration-commanded control of spacecraft and manipulators

Nominal command generation in real time for the control of manipulators or of maneuvering spacecraft is hampered by the nonlinearity of the equations of motion. Likewise the real time tracking of a computed nominal trajectory in the presence of disturbances requires the computation of time-varying Jacobians of the motion. An alternative approach is the formulation of acceleration-commanded control laws in appropriately chosen generalized advantageous to design dedicated circuit interfaces to perform the required transformation. It is also possible to guarantee that actuator and sensor saturation limits are not exceeded, by means of feedback-biased circuits that implement automatic overload limitation of acceleration commands. Recent developments following this 'hardware computation' point of view will be discussed.

Multivariable control of the Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System

Linear controllers are designed to regulate the end effector of the Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (SRMS) operating in position hold mode. Design techniques used include H2 and H-infinity optimization. The nonlinear SRMS is linearized by modeling the effects of the significant nonlinearities as uncertain parameters. Each regulator design is evaluated for robust stability using both the small gain theorem with an H-infinity norm and the less conservative mu-analysis test. Regulator designs offer significant improvement over the current system for the nominal plant. Unfortunately, the SRMS model suffers from lightly damped poles with real parametric uncertainty. Under such conditions, the mu-analysis test, which allows for complex perturbations, cannot guarantee robust stability.

Task-based configuration control of redundant manipulators

This article establishes new goals for redundancy resolution based on manipulator dynamics and end-effector characteristics. These goals can be accomplished by employing the recently developed configuration control approach. Redundancy resolution is achieved by controlling the joint inertia matrix or the end-effector mass matrix that affect the inertial torques or by reducing the joint torques due to gravity loading and payload. The manipulator mechanical advantages and velocity ratio are also used as performance measurements to be improved by proper utilization of redundancy. Furthermore, end-effector compliance, sensitivity, and impulsive force at impact are introduced as redundancy-resolution criteria. The new goals for redundancy resolution presented in this article allow a more efficient utilization of the redundant joints based on the desired task requirements. Simple case studies using computer simulations are described for illustration.

Lyapunov-based control designs for flexible-link manipulators

A feedback controller for the stabilization of closed-loop systems is proposed which is based on the Liapunov stability criterion. A feedback control law is first generated for the linear portion of the system equation using linear control theory. A feedback control is then designed for the nonlinear portion of the system equation by making negative the time derivative of a positive definite Liapunov function.
