ReLIC: Full-Scale Realization of Reinforcement Learning for Infrastructure Control

Prior efforts have shown that deep reinforcement learning (DRL) may provide a new method for controlling networked power systems. Though successful, prior approaches have not yet demonstrated their behavior on systems of realistic scale. This effort examined multiple theoretical and technical approaches to allow a DRL model to operate over a system of 2,000 buses or more. We find that allowing the DRL models to run training episodes in parallel provides near limitless efficiency gains, allowing us to train successful agents to behave on our Kuramoto transmission model of up to 4,000 buses. We further show that we can expand our PowerWorld DRL implementation to systems of up to 25 buses but struggle to go beyond this limit due to PowerWorld’s inability to run multiple instances at once. Finally, we examine a multi-agent approach and find that it performs as well if not better than our existing centralized approach.

Moving Beyond Direct Load Control: A Maturity Model for Realizing the Promise of Demand Flexibility

This report discusses a new maturity model that regulators and utilities can use to guide and expand demand flexibility programs and enable the resources to provide more grid services. The model has six demand flexibility categories: planning and design; customer engagement; program operations; evaluation, measurement and verification; distributed energy resource orchestration; and data infrastructure. Within each category, capabilities are identified and described on a maturity scale that ranges from performing below expectations to improving on best practices.

CORN (Crop Optimization Realized through Neuralnets)

Traditional models of predicting plant traits are limited because they often rely on linear assumptions that do not fully capture the complexity of biological interactions and DNA-based markers which are static across environments. This project generated a set of RNA-based data from large multi-environment field trials and combined it with advanced machine learning techniques to account for these complex interactions and improve the accuracy of predictions.

Plateau to River Model Predictive Simulations for All Ensemble Realizations to Support Modeling Work in Fiscal Year 2025

The purpose of this environmental calculation file (ECF) is to document predictions of flow and hydraulic head on the Central Plateau of the Hanford Site using the Plateau-to-River (P2R) Model (CP-57037, Model Package Report for the Plateau-to-River Model: Version 9.1). This calculation documents the simulation of the groundwater for the parent model domain of the P2R Model as a basis for use in other applications of the P2R Model. This application is unique from the standpoint that it will simulate all ensemble member models of the P2R Model whereas other applications may only utilize specific ensemble members. These simulations provide results that can be used in the process of selecting an appropriate subset of ensemble members for other applications.

Realizing the Materials-Designed-To-Environments Promise of Additive Manufacturing Through a Fundamentally Different Approach to Optimization of Nonlinear Solid Mechanics Structures

Additive Manufacturing (AM) is expected to play a large role in the labs-wide goals of accelerating innovation and leading in modern engineering. More specifically, AM is seen as a key enabling technology for increasing the agility of nuclear deterrence and other national security applications involving complex coupled environments. However, the impact of AM on these initiatives has not been as wide-ranging as hoped because – despite its unique qualities – the focus has mostly been on detailed qualification to force AM components into pre-existing performance envelopes. This paradigm fundamentally precludes the novel possibilities afforded by the geometric and material flexibility of AM. In particular, the engineering of small-scale features to undergo buckling and contact can cause large geometric and symmetry changes which provide responsiveness to different environments. Despite almost a decade of observing such behavior, there exists no way to systematically design for AM to exploit it. Our goal for this project was to connect material design to multi-environment component performance by reconceptualizing how to design for AM to exploit the buckling and contact of small-scale features.

Realization of a Quantum Slide Rule for 1+1 Dimensional Quantum Field Theories Using Josephson Superconducting Circuits

We have built a special type of electronic circuit—a “superconducting quantum simulator”—that allows us to mimic the behavior of complex quantum systems that are impossible to compute with ordinary computers. Our device is a long transmission line made of thousands of tiny superconducting junctions, acting as a one-dimensional “vacuum” for microwave photons. By terminating this line with a tunable, weak Josephson junction, we can control how strongly photons interact with each other.

Importance of Window Installation in Residential Building Envelopes Having Continuous External Insulation in Order to Realize Energy Efficiency

Residential buildings are one of the prime candidates in the United States for reducing energy consumption. Continuous exterior insulation (CEI) is being used increasingly often in residential buildings to improve energy efficiency. Windows constitute 15–40% of a building envelope and are the weakest component in energy performance. The installation of windows in walls with CEI has not been well evaluated. We identified four cases of installing windows in walls with CEI of 25–76 mm (1–3 in.) thickness and analyzed the energy loss between the window and wall interface (flanking loss), structural issues, air leakage, and moisture penetration. Thermal analysis showed that the insulation value (RSI) of the 305 mm (12 in.) perimeter wall surrounding a window decreased by 7.6–34.5% in the four cases when compared with the RSI of the wall without the window. A window installation method is proposed to address the issues likely to occur with installation methods currently being used in the field. An out-of-the-box installation system was also designed to achieve a better thermal performance, cost effectiveness, and structural performance in high-performance residential buildings.

All-Ceramic Passive Wireless Temperature Sensor Realized by Tin-Doped Indium Oxide (ITO) Electrodes for Harsh Environment Applications

In this work, an all-ceramic passive wireless inductor–capacitor (LC) resonator was presented for stable temperature sensing up to 1200 °C in air. Instead of using conventional metallic electrodes, the LC resonators are modeled and fabricated with thermally stable and highly electroconductive ceramic oxide. The LC resonator was modeled in ANSYS HFSS to operate in a low-frequency region (50 MHz) within 50 × 50 mm geometry using the actual material properties of the circuit elements. The LC resonator was composed of a parallel plate capacitor coupled with a planar inductor deposited on an Al2O3 substrate using screen-printing, and the ceramic pattern was sintered at 1250 °C for 4 h in an ambient atmosphere. The sensitivity (average change in resonant frequency with respect to temperature) from 200–1200 °C was ~170 kHz/°C. The temperature-dependent electrical conductivity of the tin-doped indium oxide (ITO, 10% SnO2 doping) on the quality factor showed an increase of Qf from 36 to 43 between 200 °C and 1200 °C. The proposed ITO electrodes displayed improved sensitivity and quality factor at elevated temperatures, proving them to be an excellent candidate for temperature sensing in harsh environments. The microstructural analysis of the co-sintered LC resonator was performed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) which showed that there are no cross-sectional and topographical defects after several thermal treatments.

Logic realization of simple majority voting connectives

Redundant circuitry is added to computer network to eliminate incorrect output obtained due to a component failure, noise, or some other disturbance. This circuitry provides majority operation. Only NAND gates are employed, and the modules used are among the most popular microelectronic or integrated circuits presently in use.
