Total Ionizing Dose Effects in 12-Bit Successive-Approximation Analog-To-Digital Converters

Analog-to-digital (A/D) converters are critical components in many space and military systems, and there have been numerous advances in A/D converter technology that have increased the resolution and conversion time. The increased performance is due to two factors: (1) advances in circuit design and complexity, which have increased the number of components and the integration density; and (2) new process technologies, such as BiCMOS, which provide better performance, cost, and smaller size in mixed-signal circuits. High-speed A/D converters, with conversion rates above 1 MHz, present a challenge to circuit designers and test engineers. Their complex architectures and high-performance specifications result in numerous possible failure modes when they are subjected to ionizing radiation. The dominant failure mode may depend on the specific application because the fundamental effects on MOS and bipolar transistors are strongly affected by bias conditions.

Two-bit Quantization for Q-dB Gain

For space missions such as NASA's Magellan mission to Venus and the Cassini mission to Saturn, the communication channel to Earth has a limited channel capacity.

NASA's Earth Science Data Systems: A "Bit of History" and Observations

NASA has significantly improved its Earth Science Data Systems over the last two decades. Open data policy and inexpensive (or free) availability of data has promoted data usage by broad research and applications communities. Flexibility, accommodation of diversity, evolvability, responsiveness to community feedback are key to success.

Device-Orientation Effects on Multiple-Bit Upset in 65-nm SRAMs

Heavy ion irradiations have been performed: a) SEU varies little with angle of ion incidence b) MBU depend on the device orientation. The MBU response depends on the well orientation of the device. MRED simulation of an omni-directional GEO environment shows the MBU response to be a combination of response from different orientations. Testing and simulation must account for multiple orientations.

High Bit Rate Experiments Over ACTS

This paper describes two high data rate experiments chat are being developed for the gigabit NASA Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS). The first is a telescience experiment that remotely acquires image data at the Keck telescope from the Caltech campus. The second is a distributed global climate application that is run between two supercomputer centers interconnected by ACTS. The implementation approach for each is described along with the expected results. Also. the ACTS high data rate (HDR) ground station is also described in detail.

Bit of History and Some Lessons Learned in Using NASA Remote Sensing Data in Public Health Applications

The NASA Applied Sciences Program's public health initiative began in 2004 to illustratethe potential benefits for using remote sensing in public health applications. Objectives/Purpose: The CDC initiated a st udy with NASA through the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) to establish a pilot effort to use remote sensing data as part of its Environmental Public Health Tracking Network (EPHTN). As a consequence, the NCEH and NASA developed a project called HELIX-Atlanta (Health and Environment Linkage for Information Exchange) to demonstrate a process for developing a local environmental public health tracking and surveillance network that integrates non-infectious health and environment systems for the Atlanta metropolitan area. Methods: As an ongo ing, systematic integration, analysis and interpretation of data, an EPHTN focuses on: 1 -- environmental hazards; 2 -- human exposure to environmental hazards; and 3 -- health effects potentially related to exposure to environmental hazards. To satisfy the definition of a surveillance system the data must be disseminated to plan, implement, and evaluate environmental public health action. Results: A close working r elationship developed with NCEH where information was exchanged to assist in the development of an EPHTN that incorporated NASA remote sensing data into a surveillance network for disseminating public health tracking information to users. This project?s success provided NASA with the opportunity to work with other public health entities such as the University of Mississippi Medical Center, the University of New Mexico and the University of Arizona. Conclusions: HELIX-Atlanta became a functioning part of the national EPHTN for tracking environmental hazards and exposure, particularly as related to air quality over Atlanta. Learning Objectives: 1 -- remote sensing data can be integral to an EPHTN; 2 -- public tracking objectives can be enhanced through remote sensing data; 3 -- NASA's involvement in public health applications can have wider benefits in the future.

Hardness Assurance and Testing Techniques for High Resolution (12- to 16-bit) Analog-to-Digital Converters

Discussed are hardness assurance and testing techniques to test and evaluate total dose radiation degradation of high resolution A/D converters. Because high-speed, high-resolution converters are critical parts in a digital signal processing or data acquisition system, the evaluation of performance in the early design phase is very important. Converters from three manufacturers are evaluated.
