We present 4110 strong gravitational lens candidates, 3887 of which are new discoveries, selected from a sample of 5,837,154 luminous red galaxies (LRGs) observed with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). Candidates are identified via the presence of background ionized oxygen [O II ] nebular emission lines in the foreground LRG spectra, which may originate from the lensing of higher-redshift star-forming galaxies. Using the measured foreground redshift, background redshift, and integrated flux of the background [O II ] doublet, we integrate over impact parameters to compute the probability that each candidate is a lens. We expect 53% of candidates to be true lenses with Einstein radii ranging from 0$^{''}_.$1–4", which can be confirmed with high-resolution imaging. Confirmed strong lenses from this sample will form a valuable cosmological data set, as strong gravitational lensing is the only method to directly measure dark matter halo substructure at cosmological distances. We independently recover the host of the multiply imaged gravitationally lensed type Ia supernova iPTF16geu. Monitoring these lenses for future multiply lensed transients will enable (a) H 0 measurements via time-delay cosmography and (b) substructure measurements via flux ratios.

Highly effective electromagnetic (EM) wave absorber materials with strong reflection loss (RL) and a wide absorption bandwidth (EBW) in gigahertz (GHz) frequencies are crucial for advanced wireless applications and portable electronics. Traditional microwave absorbers lack magnetic loss and struggle with impedance matching, while ferrites are stable, exhibit excellent magnetic and dielectric losses, and offer better impedance matching. However, achieving the desired EBW in ferrites remains a challenge, necessitating further composition design. In this study, impedance matching is successfully enhanced and EBW in Ni–Zn ferrite is broadened by successive doping with Mn and Co , without incorporation of any polymer filler. It is found that Ni 0.4 Co 0.1 Zn 0.5 Fe 1.9 Mn 0.1 O 4 material exhibits exceptional EM wave absorption, with a maximum RL of −48.7 dB. It also featured a significant EBW of 10.8 GHz, maintaining a 90% absorption rate (RL < −10 dB) for a thickness of 4.5 mm. These outstanding properties result from substantial magnetic losses and favorable impedance matching. These findings represent a significant step forward in the development of microwave absorber materials, addressing EM wave pollution concerns within GHz frequencies, including the frequency band used in popular 5G technology.
Amorphous polymeric sulfur cathodes, such as sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN), enable high-energy lithium-sulfur batteries without cobalt or nickel, leveraging abundant sulfur. However, the limited in situ understanding of their synthesis and electrochemistry has impeded targeted optimization. Here, in this study, we integrate operando high-energy total scattering with sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy to monitor SPAN's formation and cycling in real time. Our results show that S-C bond formation halts further fusion of cyclized polyacrylonitrile, fostering π-π stacking and a transition from long-chain to short-chain sulfur-critical for reversible sulfur redox. These features synergistically minimize polysulfide dissolution and charge-transfer resistance, enabling optimized SPAN to achieve high capacity retention over 1,000 cycles. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals that residual protons drive thiol-thione tautomerism, with lithium replacement during the first discharge causing ~20% irreversible capacity loss. To enhance performance, minimizing -NH groups and expanding pyridine networks are key. These findings transform SPAN optimization from empirical tuning to mechanism‑guided engineering and point the way towards sulfur loadings and energy densities competitive with state‑of‑the‑art Li‑ion cathodes.

Limited proteolysis promotes aggregation/gelation of plant proteins, but its relationship with the molecular characteristics of hydrolysates remains poorly understood. In here, response surface methodology was employed to evaluate the effects of protein concentration, Alcalase level, and hydrolysis time on the storage modulus (G′) of pea protein hydrolysates (PPH). 7.5% protein, 1.65% Alcalase, and a 6-min reaction time resulted in the highest relative increase in G′ upon heating PPH, whereas both higher (3.55%) and lower (0.3%) Alcalase levels led to less increment. Increasing the Alcalase level increased the degree of hydrolysis while decreasing the molecular weight, surface hydrophobicity, and total sulfhydryl and disulfide bond contents of PPH. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and X-ray scattering analyses found PPH produced with 1.65% Alcalase formed interconnected aggregates with dual structural domains, but not at other Alcalase conditions. These results demonstrate the role of controlled proteolysis in governing the aggregation/gelation behavior of PPH.

It is well known that everything emits infrared (IR) light in the form of thermal radiation. IR radiation on superconducting qubits carries enough energy to cause decoherence and so-called “quasiparticle poisoning.” Therefore, proper IR shielding is needed to keep the qubit in a high coherence state. However, trying to extract IR-specific information from a qubit is difficult, so a microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKID) can be used instead. We show that the IR shielding inefficiencies of MKID packages can only be compared with other packaging inefficiencies. We create a cryogenic assembly CAD design, consisting of magnetic shield cans, a copper mounting plate and mounts, and an MKID enclosure, which thermalizes the assembly to dilution refrigerator temperatures. Phase 1 of this design involves using a narrowband IR laser source to test the IR shielding of packaging at the laser’s wavelength. When the best IR shielding packaging is determined, the superconducting qubit can replace the MKID, allowing the qubit to avoid decoherence due to IR radiation and boost its performance and coherence lifetime.
Four mechanofluorochromic (MFC) luminogenic materials were prepared and found to exhibit outstanding mechanically-induced emission enhancement (MIEE) by virtue of substituent and position effects. Such materials can be used in OLED devices.
The stability of O3-type NaNi 1/3 Fe 1/3 Mn 1/3 O 2 under high-voltage cycling is dictated by how synthesis encodes lattice strain and redox heterogeneity. Here, in this study, the role of Na:TM stoichiometry is systematically resolved by tuning the NaOH:precursor ratio during solid-state synthesis. The stoichiometric condition (Na:TM = 1.00) yields minimized microstrain, enabling uniform O3–P3 phase evolution and homogeneous multi-metal redox with preserved octahedral symmetry. In contrast, Na-excess compositions inherit disordered intermediates and heterogeneous distortion fields that trigger abrupt multiphase transitions and promote localized charge redistribution. In situ XRD captures the divergence in phase-transition pathways, TXM resolves particle-level redox heterogeneity, and XANES corroborates a stronger and more reversible Fe redox contribution at stoichiometry, shifting to diminished Fe participation and spatially inhomogeneous redox at higher Na content. These results establish Na:TM stoichiometry as a critical synthesis parameter controlling both structural coherence and redox stability. Electrochemically, the stoichiometric composition exhibits smooth voltage profiles with minimal polarization growth and retains nearly 80% of its initial capacity after 100 cycles even at an extended 4.2 V cutoff, whereas Na-excess compositions show significantly reduced initial coulombic efficiency and rapid voltage fade. Precise stoichiometric tuning provides a scalable route to defect-suppressed O3 frameworks, enabling structurally resilient, high-voltage sodium-layered cathodes.
ABSTRACT The performance of organic solar cells (OSCs) is governed by how molecular packing evolves into interconnected networks that facilitate exciton dissociation and charge transport. Using an all‐small‐molecule blend DR3TSBDT:Y6 as a model system, we study how local molecular stacking evolves into performance‐relevant morphology during solvent vapor annealing (SVA) and subsequent thermal annealing (TA). SVA promotes end‐to‐end stacking of amorphous acceptors to form interconnected fibrils, while TA compacts inter‐fibril spacing without disrupting favorable local order. Such molecular‐to‐morphological refinements broaden light absorption, enhance charge transport, and markedly improve device efficiency. Extending this approach to additional blend systems (D18:Y6, D18:L8‐BO, and DR3TSBDT:L8‐BO) yields similar structural evolution and performance gains, with the D18:L8‐BO system achieving up to 20.10% PCE. Our study establishes control over local stacking in amorphous acceptors into fibrillar networks as a general and effective route to realize high‐performance OSCs.
Polar-ring galaxies are photometrically and kinematically decoupled systems that are highly inclined to the major axis of the host. These galaxies have been explored since the 1970s, but the rarity of these systems has made such systematic studies difficult. However, over 250 good candidates have been identified. In this work, we examine a sample of over 18 000 galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 for the presence of galaxies with polar structures. Using deep SDSS Stripe 82, DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys, and Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program, we selected 53 good candidate galaxies with photometrically decoupled polar rings, 9 galaxies with polar halos, 6 galaxies with polar bulges, and 34 possibly forming polar-ring galaxies, versus 13 polar-ring candidates previously selected in Stripe 82. Our results suggest that the occurrence rate of galaxies with polar structures may be significantly underestimated, as revealed by the deep observations, and may amount to 1–3% of non-dwarf galaxies.
