Thermoplastic coating of carbon fibers

Now that quantities of prepreg were made on the thermoplastic coating line, they are being formed into both textile preform structures and directly into composite samples. The textile preforms include both woven and knitted structures which will be thermoformed into a finished part. In order to determine if the matrix resin is properly adhering to the fibers or if voids are being formed in the coating process, the tensile strength and modulus of these samples will be tested. The matrix uniformity of matrix distribution in these samples is also being determined using an image analyzer.

The RP-2 sailplane

The all-composite design and fabrication methodology employed by Rensselaer Polytechnic Intitute's 'CAPGLIDE' program in producing such sailplanes as the RP-2 is discussed. The RP-2's production methods, which furnish hands-on experience for the students enrolled in the program, encompass wet lay-up and vacuum bag procedures, as well as autoclave curing of prepreg parts employing graphite, kevlar, and glass fiber reinforcements. Epoxy resins are the primary matrix materials, and are used in conjunction with polymer foams for the sandwich panel elements of the sailplane structure.

FTIR characterization of thermally cycled PMR-15 composites

Chemical characterization results are presented for a variety of PMR-15/graphite composites, differentiated according to prepreg types and cure cycles, which were subjected to 1000 thermal cycles between 0 and 450 F. Fourier transform IR spectroscopy was used in conjunction with diffuse reflectance sampling to examine whether changes in the matrix resin chemistry due to environmental exposure may have contributed to microcracking. Analysis based on compound spectra revealed behavior associated with the oxidation of methylene groups to carbonyl groups on the composite surface; evidence of crosslinking also emerged, although the two phenomena do not appear to be related.

A review of dynamic mechanical characterization of high temperature PMR polyimides and composites

This paper reviews the applications of dynamic mechanical characterization for high-temperature PMR polyimides and their graphite-fiber-reinforced composites. This characterization technique provides insights into the processability, performance, and structure property relationships of the polyimides and composites. The dynamic mechanical properties of various molding powders, commercially obtained prepregs, neat resins, and as-fabricated as well as aged composites are presented. Some applied aspects of the dynamic mechanical data are discussed.

Experimental study of thin-walled composite beams

Thin-walled rectangular section composite beams are built out of graphite-epoxy prepreg tape using an autoclave molding technique. Cantilevered beams are tested under static loads using a specially-built apparatus and bending slope and elastic twist at a station are measured using a laser system. Measured bending slope and bending-induced twist distributions are correlated with predicted results obtained using a simple beam analysis as well as a refined finite element analysis. Natural vibration characteristics at different rotational speeds are determined experimentally by testing beams in a specially built 10 ft diameter vacuum chamber. The rotor is excited by piezo-electric crystals and response is determined from strain gages mounted on the surface. For composite beams with bending-twisting couplings (symmetric layup), effects of section warping and transverse shear on structural response are found to be substantial. These results were substantiated by the analyses.

Low cost damage tolerant composite fabrication

The resin transfer molding (RTM) process applied to composite aircraft parts offers the potential for using low cost resin systems with dry graphite fabrics that can be significantly less expensive than prepreg tape fabricated components. Stitched graphite fabric composites have demonstrated compression after impact failure performance that equals or exceeds that of thermoplastic or tough thermoset matrix composites. This paper reviews methods developed to fabricate complex shape composite parts using stitched graphite fabrics to increase damage tolerance with RTM processes to reduce fabrication cost.

In situ composite cure monitoring using infrared transmitting optical fibers

The development of infrared-transmitting optical fibers as sensors for monitoring the cure of advanced composite materials is reported. Fourier transform infrared spectra are presented which were remotely sensed during the cure of a high performance polyimide resin and a graphite/polyimide matrix prepreg using an 0.1 mm O.D. x 3 m chalcogenide optical fiber. A discussion of the fiber and sensor element, absorption mechanism and potential applications is presented.
