The fast luminescent decay of the MV-50 GaAs doped Si light-emitting diode has been studied. This diode is found to provide a fast, inexpensive, bright, and convenient light source for the calibration of fast optical timing systems. A simple passive electronic module is described that allows driving the light source directly by a laboratory pulse generator.
High voltage is applied to an arc gap adjacent to a test specimen to develop a succession of high frequency arc discharges. Those high frequency arc discharges generate pulses of ultrasonic energy within the test specimen without requiring the arc discharges to contact that test specimen and without requiring a coupling medium. Those pulses can be used for detection of flaws and measurements of certain properties and stresses within the test specimen.
A digital controller for controlling the operation of a folding machine enables automatic folding of a desired number of sheets responsive to entry of that number into a selector. The controller includes three decade counter stages for corresponding rows of units, tens and hundreds push buttons. Each stage including a decimal-to-BCD encoder, a buffer register, and a digital or binary counter. The BCD representation of the selected count for each digit is loaded into the respective decade down counters. Pulses generated by a sensor and associated circuitry are used to decrease the count in the decade counters. When the content of the decade counter reaches either 0 or 1, a solenoid control valve is actuated which interrupts operation of the machine. A repeat switch, when actuated, prevents clearing of the buffer registers so that multiple groups of the same number of sheets can be folded without reentering the number into the selector.
A phase lock servo system is described for synchronizing the rotation of a slip ring assembly with the rotation of an air bearing table so that a minimum of torque will be imparted through cables extending from the slip ring assembly to the air bearing table as such is rotated. The system includes two servo loops. The first servo loop includes a rate gyroscope carried on the air bearing table which generates a signal through a summing junction to be compared with a signal coming from a tachometer coupled to the slip ring assembly. The corrective signal is applied to a torque motor for rotating the slip ring assembly. The second servo loop includes a pair of photo detector cells which generate pulses responsive to the rotation of the air bearing table and slip ring assembly which are fed through a phase detector, and a variable gain amplifier to the summing junction circuit to provide a fine adjustment for rotating the slip ring assembly.
The recording of particle tracks in the form of sparks or streamers running at different angles toward the electric field of the chamber was studied. The investigations were performed with two discharge spark chambers consisting of boxes filled with neon at 1 atm. The spark chambers were powered by a pulse with an amplitude of 300 kV applied from a pulse generator. The recording of particle tracks in the form of sparks took place at track angles smaller than 30 deg with respect to the electrical field. At angle larger than 40 deg the tracks are recorded in the form of streamers. Particle traces with respect to the angle are given.
A very-long-baseline interferometer system was designed and built for geodetic applications. Each interferometer terminal records a 360-kHz spectral band of noise from a compact extragalactic radio source. The center frequency of the spectral band can be selected to sample sequentially bands covering a much wider frequency range to obtain subnanosecond accuracy in group-delay measurements. A tunnel-diode pulse generator is used to calibrate the delays in the receiver. The necessary sets of algorithms and computer programs have been developed to analyze the data and have allowed the system to be employed to make accurate determinations of vector baselines, radio-source positions, polar motion, and universal time.
A switched inductor voltage is coupled to a sense winding in each phase, and all sense windings are connected in series to one of two feedback loops to provide a signal that indicates when one of the power switches is on as the principal determinant of switching instants. A sequencer is triggered each time a pulse generator is triggered to turn on a different power switch in sequence at each switching instant.
Circuitry for maintaining an arc or spark across a spark gap for a desired length of time is disclosed. A high voltage, direct current source is connected in series with a secondary winding of a high voltage, stepup transformer or coil and a spark gap such as a spark plug for example. The high voltage source may be on continuously or may be turned on and off by a control circuit such as a solid state switch which is, in turn, responsive to a timing device such as a set of ignition contact points or a magnetic pulse generator operating in synchronism with a spark ignition engine. The timing device also provides signals to a current switching circuit which interrupts, current flow through a primary winding of the high voltage coil at the prescribed time that a spark is desired at the spark gap.
Equipment had been constructed for measuring sound absorption in the frequency range from 4 to 100 kHz in a large tube 25.4 cm in diameter and 4.8-m long. The technique employs a large moveable solid-dielectric capacitance transducer that completely fills the tube cross section and generates pulses of plane waves. An identical transducer terminates the other end of the tube and serves as a microphone to detect and reflect the sound pulses. Measurements in argon, nitrogen, and air indicate that the attenuation of the sound pulses differs by less than 1% from values calculated for the zero-order mode for frequencies up to 44 times the cutoff frequency for the first 'nonplane' mode. Above that frequency, the measured values are less than those predicted by theory by an amount that is approximately proportional to the wavelength to the -3.1 power. In a smaller tube of similar construction, the high-frequency deviation from theory is absent.
A method is presented for the signature analysis of pulses by reconstructing in the time domain the shape of the pulse prior to its passing through the measurement system. This deconvolution technique is first evaluated using an idealized system and analytical pulse models and is shown to provide improved results. An experimental situation is then treated; system-component models are developed for the digitizer, tape recorder, filter, transducer and mechanical structure. To accommodate both calibration results and manufacturer's data, and to provide stable mathematical models entails considerable effort: some 30 parameters must be identified to model this system - which is still a substantial approximation - albeit of very high order. Experimental pulses generated by a ball drop, spark discharge and a tearing crack are then deconvoluted 'back through' the system as modeled, using this technique. These results are compared and indicate (a) that consistent shapes may be expected from a given type of source and (b) that some sources can be identified with greater clarity using the deconvolution approach.
Instrumental modification at the Arecibo Observatory are described, which make possible a resolution of 150 m, the maximum allowed by the transmitter bandwidth. Attention is given to digital decoding, the radar controller, and the fact that a complementary coded pulse scheme generating no pulse side lobes has been used for the first time. It is noted that power spectra of the signals corresponding to 256 altitudes are evaluated on line by means of an array processor. A profile of the E-W component of the wind as a function of altitude has been observed, as well as the discrete layered structure of turbulence, especially at higher altitudes; in addition, the maximum range at which an echo has been detected is about 31 km. The results obtained show the importance for stratospheric studies of high resolution when using radar to obtain wind information from the Doppler shift of turbulence echoes.
The detection of acoustic surface wave pulses by a wideband differential interferometric laser technique which is insensitive to low frequency noise is described. System bandwidth is determined by the relationship between acoustic wavelength and the variable spacing between two laser probe beams focused on the solid surface which supports the waves. Theoretical sensitivity to surface displacement amplitude is equal to, or better than, that of other electrooptical techniques. Response to an ideal step function displacement is analyzed and experimental measurements of gated 2.5 MHz pulses generated on an aluminized pyrex plate are discussed. Potential application in the characterization of acoustic emission in composites is described.

Large transient pressure pulses, referred to as a helium hammer, which occurred in the transfer line of the main cryogenic tank during the development tests of the Infrared Astronomical Satellite, launched on January 25, 1983, are analyzed, and the measures taken to prevent a failure described. The modifications include an installation of a 2.3-liter surge tank upstream, and a back-up relief valve downstream, of a burst disk. The surge tank is designed to attenuate a 0.33-MPa pressure pulse at the inlet down to 0.092 MPa at the outlet. A mechanism of the pulse generation is suggested, which involves flashing and rapid recondensation of the small amount of liquid entering the warm section of a transition to room temperature.
A light-activated semiconductor device usable as an optoelectronic switch, pulse generator or optical detector is provided. A semiconductor device is disclosed which provides back-to-back metal-thin oxide-silicon (MTOS) capacitors. Each capacitor includes a thin, light-absorptive aluminum electrode which overlies a thin oxide layer and a lightly doped region implanted in an intrinsic silicon substrate.
A new time-of-flight (TOF) laser anemometer system utilizing a spatial lead-lag filter for bipolar pulse generation has been constructed and tested. This new TOF has been modified to enable measurements in turbulent flows near walls. Good results have been obtained as close as 100 microns from a surface, with a 140-mm focal length final lens. Lading's theory for the behavior of the measurement variance has been confirmed for this configuration.
