Spin disorder in a stacking polytype of a layered magnet

Strongly correlated ground states and exotic quasiparticle excitations in low-dimensional systems are central research topics in the solid-state research community. The present work develops a layered material and explores the physical properties. Single crystals of 3⁢R–Na 2 ⁢MnTe⁢O 6 were synthesized via a flux method. Single-crystal x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy reveal a crystal structure with ABC-type stacking and an R–3 space group, which establishes this material as a stacking polytype to previously reported 2⁢H–Na 2 ⁢MnTe⁢O 6 . Magnetic- and heat-capacity measurements demonstrate dominant antiferromagnetic interactions, the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 0.5 K, and field-dependent short-range magnetic correlations. A structural transition at ~23 K observed in dielectric measurements may be related to displacements of the Na positions. In conclusion, our results demonstrate that 3⁢R–Na 2 ⁢MnTe⁢O 6 displays low-dimensional magnetism, disordered structure and spins, and the system displays a rich structure variety.

Li 4 Ru 2 OCl 10 ·10H 2 O: crystal structure, magnetic properties and bonding interactions in ruthenium-oxo complexes

The results of the structural determination, magnetic characterization, and theoretical calculations of a new ruthenium-oxo complex, Li 4 [Ru 2 OCl 10 ]·10H 2 O, are presented. Single crystals were grown using solvent methods and the crystal structure was characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Li 4 [Ru 2 OCl 10 ]·10H 2 O crystallizes into a low-symmetry triclinic structure ($P\bar1$) due to the much smaller Li + cation compared to K + cation in the tetragonal complex K 4 [Ru 2 OCl 10 ]·H 2 O. The X-ray photoelectron spectra confirm only the single valent Ru 4+ in Li 4 [Ru 2 OCl 10 ]·10H 2 O even though two distinct Ru sites exist in the crystal structure. Magnetic measurements reveal the diamagnetic property of Li 4 [Ru 2 OCl 10 ]·10H 2 O with unpaired electrons existing on Ru 4+ . Furthermore, the molecular orbital analysis matches well with the observed UV and magnetic measurements.

Structure of Charge Density Waves in La1.875Ba0.125CuO4

Although charge-density wave (CDW) correlations exist in several families of cuprate superconductors, they exhibit substantial variation in CDW wavevector and correlation length, indicating a key role for CDW-lattice interactions. We investigated this interaction in La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 using single crystal x-ray diffraction to collect a large number of CDW peak intensities, and determined the Cu and La/Ba atomic distortions induced by the formation of CDW order. Within the CuO2 planes, the distortions involve a periodic modulation of the Cu-Cu spacing along the direction of the ordering wave vector. The charge ordering within the copper-oxygen layer induces an out-of-plane breathing modulation of the surrounding lanthanum layers, which leads to a related distortion on the adjacent copper-oxygen layer. Our result implies that the CDW-related structural distortions do not remain confined to a single layer but rather propagate an appreciable distance through the crystal. This leads to overlapping structural modulations, in which CuO2 planes exhibit distortions arising from the orthogonal CDWs in adjacent layers as well as distortions from the CDW within the layer itself. We attribute this striking effect to the weak c-axis charge screening in cuprates and suggest this effect could help couple the CDW between adjacent planes in the crystal.

Leveraging the redox activities of cerium and dibenzotetrathiafulvalene to discover a photo-responsive magnetic material

Stimuli-responsive changes in lanthanide-based materials are a promising research direction. In this study, [DBTTF] 4 [Ce 2 Cl 10 ] DBTTF = dibenzotetrathiafulvalene (1) was synthesized by a light-induced crystallization, where photo-oxidation of DBTTF enables formation of the cerium dimer [Ce 2 Cl 10 ] 4− . Intermolecular interactions between the stacked organic units of the crystal result in charge transfer bands in the visible-NIR (near-infrared) region, evident in the solid-state absorption spectrum upon comparison with the solution spectrum. The assignments of the sublattice oxidation states were made with single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) structural characterization, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and magnetometry. Continuous 532 nm laser irradiation of the microcrystalline solid modulates the redox states in 1, leading to ∼40% reduction in the observed magnetization at 2 K. Density functional theory PBE+U/HSE06 band structure calculations predict Mott insulating behavior in 1, with a bandgap of 0.54/0.81 eV, and further support the conjecture that the observed photo-induced change in magnetization results from electron transfer from the [Ce 2 Cl 10 ] 4− anions to the π-stacked [DBTTF] 2 2+ organic dimer subunits. An enhancement in conductivity is similarly observed upon 532 nm irradiation, determined by single-crystal transport measurements. The findings reveal that photo-responsive lanthanide-based materials can be achieved by integration of redox-active organic moieties with redox-active lanthanide cations for the realization of switchable, photo-magnetic materials.

Observation of an Unexpected n -Type Semiconducting Behavior in the New Ternary Zintl Phase Eu 3 InAs 3

The ternary arsenides Eu 3 InAs 3 and Sr 3 InAs 3 have been obtained by reactions of the elements in In flux at 1373 K. Structure elucidation by single-crystal X-ray diffraction reveals that Eu 3 InAs 3 and Sr 3 InAs 3 adopt the same orthorhombic structure (space group Pnma, Z = 4, Ca 3 AlAs 3 structure type) with unit cell parameters a = 12.9179(9) Å, b = 4.3990(3) Å, c = 13.9337(10) Å and a = 13.0218(11) Å, b = 4.4364(4) Å, c = 14.1339(12) Å, respectively. The structure consists of linear chains of corner-sharing InAs4 tetrahedra, [InAs 2 As 2/2 ] 6– , and Eu 2+ /Sr 2+ cations. Therefore, both Eu 3 InAs 3 and Sr 3 InAs 3 are valence-precise Zintl phases. As expected from the closed-shell electronic configurations, semiconducting behavior is confirmed by resistivity measurements on single crystals for both and by electronic band structure calculations for Sr 3 InAs 3 . The temperature dependence of resistivity and the computational work are in agreement that Eu 3 InAs 3 and Sr 3 InAs 3 are intrinsic semiconductors with narrow band gaps. Thermopower measurement on single-crystalline samples of Eu 3 InAs 3 shows that in the whole measured temperature range, from 300 to 700 K, the values for the Seebeck coefficient are negative. The observation of a negative Seebeck coefficient with very large absolute value (>400–500 μV K –1 at 700 K) is unexpected among the Zintl phases and suggestive that electrons are the majority charge carriers. Such a rare, n-type charge transport in an undoped compound such as Eu 3 InAs 3 , a material that has not been purposely optimized, could indicate native “defect” chemistry, and not extrinsic doping, as a reason for the unusual behavior. Here, a possible explanation involves a mixed-valent Eu 2+ /Eu 3+ state, which might be inferred from the measured effective paramagnetic moment of 7.2 μB per Eu atom, which is lower than the theoretically predicted value for free-ion moment of 7.9 μ B /Eu.

Modulation of crystal growth and structure within cerium-based metal–organic frameworks

The intriguing catalytic properties of cerium-based materials have motivated the development of Ce-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). However, the controlled crystallization of Ce MOFs remains nascent due to complications with the high reduction potential of Ce 4+ species. Modulators offer a route in other well-studied coordination networks to slow down crystallization processes to allow for corrective, uniform crystal growth. Herein, we report an investigation of modulator identity and concentration on the synthesis of a Ce-UiO-type MOF with 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (NDC) as a linker. At low concentrations using both benzoic acid and trifluoroacetic acid, we observed a mononuclear Ce 3+ MOF (NU-350) through single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Higher modulator concentrations yielded pure-phase Ce-UiO-NDC, with uniform particle sizes observed with utilizing benzoic acid as a modulator. Moreover, we demonstrated the transferability of this synthesis through the pure-phase synthesis of Ce-UiO-66 with benzoic acid as a modulator. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy showed a single crystalline domain within Ce-UiO-NDC.

Magnetic properties of the Ising-like rare earth pyrosilicate: D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7

Ising-like spin-1/2 magnetic materials are of interest for their ready connection to theory, particularly in the context of quantum critical behavior. In this work we report detailed studies of the magnetic properties of a member of the rare earth pyrosilicate family, D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7 , which is known to display a highly anisotropic Ising-like g-tensor and effective spin-1/2 magnetic moments. We used powder neutron diffraction, powder inelastic neutron spectroscopy (INS), and single crystal AC susceptibility to characterize its magnetic properties. Neutron diffraction enabled us to determine the magnetic structure below the known transition temperature (T N = 1.9 K) in zero field, confirming that the magnetic state is a four-sublattice antiferromagnetic structure with two non-collinear Ising axes, as was previously hypothesized. Our powder INS data revealed a gapped excitation at zero field, consistent with anisotropic (possibly Ising) exchange. An applied field of 1 T produces a mode softening, which is consistent with a field-induced second order phase transition. To assess the relevance of D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7 to the transverse field Ising model, we performed AC susceptibility measurements on a single crystal with the magnetic field oriented in the direction transverse to the Ising axes. This revealed a transition at 2.65 T at 0.1 K, a field significantly higher than the mode-softening field observed by powder INS, showing that the field-induced phase transitions are highly field-direction dependent as expected. Furthermore, these measurements suggest that D-Er 2 Si 2 O 7 may be a candidate for further exploration related to the transverse field Ising model.

SrNi(VO 4 )(OH): The High-Temperature Hydrothermal Synthesis and Magnetic Properties of an Adelite-Descloizite-Type Structure

Single crystals of a new transition metal adelite-descloizite-type structure were synthesized using a high temperature (580 °C) high-pressure hydrothermal technique. Single crystal X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) were used to investigate the structure and elemental composition, respectively. SrNi(VO 4 )(OH) crystallizes in an acentric orthorhombic crystal system in the space group P2 1 2 1 2 1 (no. 19); Z = 4, a = 5.9952(4) Å, b = 7.5844(4) Å, c = 9.2240(5) Å. The structure is comprised of a Ni–O–V framework where Sr 2+ ions reside inside the channels. Single-crystal magnetic measurements display a significant anisotropy in both temperature- and field-dependent data. The temperature dependent magnetic measurement shows antiferromagnetic behavior at T N ~8 K. Overall, the magnetic properties indicate the presence of competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions of SrNi(VO 4 )(OH).

Dehydration of UO 2 Cl 2 ·3H 2 O and Nd(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O with a Soft Donor Ligand and Comparison of Their Interactions through X-ray Diffraction and Theoretical Investigation [plus Supplemental Information]

Herein we investigated whether the relatively Lewis basic imidazole-2-thiones could be used to substitute water ligands bound to f-element cations and generate f-element soft donor complexes. Reactions of 1,3-diethylimidazole-2-thione (C 2 C 2 ImT) with Nd(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O and UO 2 Cl 2 ·3H 2 O led to the isolation of the anhydrous thione complexes Nd(NO 3 ) 3 (C 2 C 2 ImT) 3 and UO 2 Cl 2 (C 2 C 2 ImT) 2 , characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Differences in the strength of metal–thione interactions have been examined by means of the crystal structure analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The C 2 C 2 ImT ligands were found to be affected by both coordination and noncovalent interactions, making it impossible to deconvolute the effects of one from the other. Calculated partial atomic charges indicated greater ligand-to-metal charge transfer in the [UO 2 ] 2+ complex, indicative of a stronger interaction. The reactivity of C 2 C 2 ImT demonstrates its usefulness in the preparation of f-element soft donor complexes from readily available hydrates that could be useful intermediates for promoting the coordination and studying the effects of soft donor anions.

The orbital effect on the anomalous magnetism and evolution in La $x$ Y 1-$x$ VO 3 (0 ≤ $x$ ≤ 0.2) single crystals

The orbital effect on the anomalous magnetism and evolution of single crystals with low La doping, La $x$ Y 1-$x$ VO 3 ($x$ = 0, 0.1, and 0.2), has been studied using single-crystal X-ray diffraction, specific heat, magnetization, and Raman-scattering techniques. It is found that substituting Y 3+ by La 3+ increases the degeneracy of the $yz/zx$ orbitals and decreases the Jahn-Teller distortion. These weakens the G-type (antiphase ordering along the c axis) orbital ordering phase. Meanwhile, the substituting decreases the magnetism entropy, indicating the shrinking of the t 2g and e g orbital hybridization, eventually destabilizing the C-type (in-phase ordering along the c axis) antiferromagnetic ordering phase. In addition, the mechanism for the shrinking of the diamagnetism with increasing $x$ is analyzed. In conclusion, it may attribute to the competition between the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinsky–Moriya interaction and the single-ion anisotropy.

Enabling Ethanol Dehydrogenation Catalysis by Postsynthetic Anion Exchange of Triazolate-Based Metal–Organic Frameworks

Materials containing soft, polarizable elements are expanding the boundaries of catalytic properties, offering unique electronic communication and stability characteristics compared with their harder counterparts due to the enhanced covalent nature of metal–ligand interactions. However, integrating soft components like sulfur into metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for catalytic applications remains a largely underexplored challenge. Here, we report the synthesis of a family of triazole-based MOFs and expand upon established postsynthetic anion exchange methods to incorporate sterically encumbered polarizable elements, such as alkyl thiolates. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, coupled with elemental analysis, confirms the successful anion exchange within M 2 X 2 BBTA (M = Co, Ni; X = μ-Cl, μ-OH, μ-SH, μ-SMe, μ-SEt; H 2 BBTA = 1H,5H-benzo(1,2-d:4,5-d′)bistriazole). We found that the anion identity significantly impacts the catalytic activity and selectivity of the MOFs, especially in nonoxidative ethanol dehydrogenation. Temperature-programmed experiments indicated that the metal single sites act as catalytically active sites below 250 °C. This work not only expands the synthetic toolbox for incorporating polarizable components into MOFs but also provides critical insights into their catalytic potential.

Structural Peculiarities of the Intermediate Phase in Zr-Rich Lead Zirconate Titanate

This paper presents the results of X-ray diffraction studies on a single crystal of lead zirconate titanate PbZr{sub 0.993}Ti{sub 0.007}O{sub 3} in the region of existence of an intermediate ferroelectric phase. In addition to the known superstructure reflections of the M type q{sub M} = {(1/2),(1/2),0} and the first-order satellite reflections q{sub M} + {δ, δ, δ}, unknown second-order satellites have been observed near q{sub M} and near the Bragg reflections. Structural model of regular system of antiphase domains is used for diffraction calculation. The model is shown to describe the first- and second-orders satellite reflections in the vicinity of q{sub M}, but it cannot explain the appearance of satellites around the main Bragg peaks. A possible origin of the system of the superstructures observed in the intermediate phase is discussed.

Probing the lattice structure of dynamically compressed and released single crystal iron through the alpha to epsilon phase transition

In this work, experiments using broadband Laue x-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to examine the lattice structure of dynamically compressed [100]-oriented single crystal iron samples at the Dynamic Compression Sector at the Advanced Photon Source. These experiments used 1 μm thick iron single crystal samples sandwiched between a polyimide ablator and a polycarbonate window. A 100 J, 10 ns duration laser pulse incident on the polyimide ablator was used to shock compress the iron samples to initial stresses greater than 25 GPa, exceeding the ~13 GPa alpha (body-centered-cubic or bcc structure) to epsilon (hexagonal-close-packed or hcp structure) phase transition stress. XRD measurements were performed at various times relative to the shock wave entering the iron sample: early times, <~150 ps while the initial shock waves propagated through the iron; intermediate times, after the iron equilibrated with the ablator and window reaching a plateau stress state (12 or 17 GPa) lasting several nanoseconds; and late times, during uniaxial strain release. The early time measurements show that in <~150 ps, the high-pressure hcp phase is relaxed with a c/a ratio of 1.61, contrary to previous laser shock experiments where a c/a ratio of 1.7 was inferred. In the plateau stress state and partially released states, XRD measurements showed that the hcp structure retained a c/a ratio of 1.61 with no observable changes in the microstructure. Upon stress release at ~1 GPa/ns release rate, the reverse phase transition (hcp to bcc) to the original single crystal orientation (implying a transformation memory effect) was observed to reach completion somewhere between 13 and 11 GPa, indicating little stress hysteresis under rapid uniaxial strain release. A similar memory effect for the reverse hcp to bcc transformation has been previously observed under hydrostatic compression. However, the bcc/hcp orientation relationships differ somewhat between dynamic and static compression experiments, implying that the transformation pathway under uniaxial dynamic strain differs from the Burgers mechanism.

Materials design, synthesis, and transport properties of disordered rare-earth Zintl bismuthides with the anti -Th 3 P 4 structure type

The synthesis, structural elucidation, and transport properties of the extended series Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3 (RE = Y, La–Nd, Sm, Gd–Tm, and Lu; x ≈ 1) and Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3–δ Sb δ (RE = La, Ho, Er, and Lu; x ≈ 1, δ ≈ 1.5) are presented. Structural elucidation is based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and confirms the chemical drive of Ca4Bi3 with the cubic anti-Th 3 P 4 structure type (space group I4 ¯3d, no. 220, Z = 4) into a Zintl phase by the introduction of trivalent rare-earth atoms. The structure features complex bonding, heavy elements, and electron count akin to that of valence-precise semiconductors, making it an ideal target for thermoelectrics development. Introducing crystallographic site disorders at the cation site for the Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3 phase and both the cation and anion sites for the Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3–δ Sb δ phase brings about additional desirable characteristics for thermoelectric materials in the context of tuning knobs for lowering thermal conductivity. Electronic structure calculations of idealized Ca 3 YBi 3 and Ca 3 LaBi 3 compounds indicate the opening of indirect bandgaps at the Fermi level with magnitudes Eg = 0.38 eV and 0.57 eV, respectively. The electrical resistivity ρ(T) of some of the investigated phases measured on single crystals evolve in a metallic manner with magnitudes of order 1.4 mΩ cm near 500 K, thus supporting the notion of a degenerate semiconducting state, with the temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient α(T) suggesting the p-type behavior. Furthermore, the low electrical resistivity and the realization of a degenerate semiconducting state in the title phases present a window of opportunity for optimizing their carrier concentrations for enhanced thermoelectric performance.

Random-exchange Heisenberg behavior in the electron-doped quasi-one-dimensional spin-1 chain compound AgVP 2 ⁢S 6

Recent theoretical work suggests that a pair-density wave superconducting state can be realized by doping a one-dimensional spin-1 chain. Here, we report the physical properties of single crystals of Mg x Ag 1–x VP 2 S 6 [x = 0, x = 0.017(6), x = 0.067(8), and 0.098(11)] prepared by solid-state synthesis. Single-crystal x-ray-diffraction measurements confirm that Mg 2+ is substituting for Ag + to electron dope the V 3+ zigzag chains. Magnetization measurements reveal that electron doping breaks up the V 3+ chains, resulting in unpaired spins at the chain ends. The Mg x Ag 1–x VP 2 S 6 series is consistent with random-exchange Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain behavior and can be well described by the exchange-coupled pair model at low temperatures. As a result, transport measurements show Mg x Ag 1–x VP 2 S 6 remains insulating in the range 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.098(11), with the band gap decreasing to ~ 0.2 eV at x = 0.098(11).
