Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV) engine study phase A, extension

The current Phase A-Extension of the OTV engine study program seeks to provide additional expander and staged combustion cycle data that will lead to design definition of the OTV engine. The proposed program effort will optimize the expander cycle engine concept (consistent with identified OTV engine requirements), investigate the feasibility of kitting the stage combustion cycle engine to provide extended low thrust operation, and conduct in-depth analysis of development risk, crew safety, and reliability for both cycles. Additional task will address costing of a 10k thrust expander cycle engine and support of OTV systems study contractors.

Space Shuttle power extension package

A modification kit for the Space Transportation System (STS) Orbiter is proposed to provide more power and mission duration for payloads. The power extension package (PEP), a flexible-substrate solar array deployed on the Space Shuttle Orbiter remote manipulator system, can provide as much as 29 kW total power for durations of 10 to 48 days. The kit is installed only for those flights which require enhanced power or duration. The PEP is made possible by development of the flexible-substrate array technology and, in itself, contributes to the technology base for the use of large area solar cells. Modifications to the Orbiter thermal control and life support systems to improve heat balance and to reduce consumables are proposed. The changes consist of repositioning the Orbiter forward radiators and replacing the lithium hydroxide scrubber with a regenerable solid amine.

Method for estimating crack-extension resistance curve from residual strength data

A method is presented for estimating the crack extension resistance curve (R curve) from residual strength (maximum load against initial crack length) data for precracked fracture specimens. The method allows additional information to be inferred from simple test results, and that information is used to estimate the failure loads of more complicated structures. Numerical differentiation of the residual strength data is required, and the problems that it may present are discussed.

Extension of oblique incidence method to photo-orthotropic-elasticity

With the interpretation of isochromatic and isoclinic fringes in transparent, birefringent, orthotropic composites established, efforts were in progress to determine the individual values of the principal stresses or strains. Several methods utilize the photoelastic results only partially and rely on numerical procedures. Others attempt to obtain the required information based entirely on experimental data. The classical oblique incidence technique as applied to transversely isotropic birefringent composites, is presented. The proposed extension is verified by applying it to the problem of an orthotropic half-plane subjected to an edge-load.

Comparative radiation testing of solar cells for the shuttle power extension package

The Power Extension Package (PEP) is the prime focus of a development program to produce low cost solar cells. The PEP is a 32 kilowatt flexible substrate, retrievable, solar array system for use on the Space Shuttle. Solar cell cost will be reduced by increasing cell area and simplifying cell and coverglass fabrication processes and specifications. The cost goal is to produce cells below $30 per watt. Two and ten ohm-cm silicon cells were investigated. This paper describes a unique radiation damage test and side-by-side comparison of candidate cell types with pre-and post-irradiation airplane calibration of outer space short-circuit current.

A validation of LTRAN2 with high frequency extensions by comparisons with experimental measurements of unsteady transonic flows

A high frequency extension of the unsteady, transonic code LTRAN2 was created and is evaluated by comparisons with experimental results. The experimental test case is a NACA 64A010 airfoil in pitching motion at a Mach number of 0.8 over a range of reduced frequencies. Comparisons indicate that the modified code is an improvement of the original LTRAN2 and provides closer agreement with experimental lift and moment coefficients. A discussion of the code modifications, which involve the addition of high frequency terms of the boundary conditions of the numerical algorithm, is included.

On the application and extension of Harten's high resolution scheme

Extensions of a second order high resolution explicit method for the numerical computation of weak solutions of one dimensonal hyperbolic conservation laws are discussed. The main objectives were (1) to examine the shock resoluton of Harten's method for a two dimensional shock reflection problem, (2) to study the use of a high resolution scheme as a post-processor to an approximate steady state solution, and (3) to construct an implicit in the delta-form using Harten's scheme for the explicit operator and a simplified iteration matrix for the implicit operator.

Introducing remote sensing to county-level agencies in Michigan through the Cooperative Extension Service

State and regional planning agencies in Michigan are aware of remote sensing technology, however, many agencies at the county and township level have not been introduced to its potential. This paper describes an educational effort undertaken by the MSU Remote Sensing Project and the Michigan Cooperative Extension Service aimed at reaching local decision makers. Remote sensing materials and a questionnaire were used to elicit interest and aid in planning the program. A series of seven workshops were held throughout Michigan for governmental officials and the staff of public agencies from 38 counties. Emphasis was placed on the characteristics, availability and usefulness of remotely-sensed data through a series of successful applications conducted in the state. The workshops were highly successful and many local decision makers are not aware of a new tool to call upon in their responses to land use and natural resource concerns.

The extension of OB star winds to lower luminosities

Mass loss rates for a number of early-to-mid-B main-sequence stars are compared with extrapolations of recently derived empirical correlations between M and stellar parameters for luminous OB stars. The order of magnitude of the rates for the B stars is consistent with a simple dependence on luminosity over the range from Of to mid-B, and is not consistent with previously derived correlations involving a dependence on mass or radius, which implies that luminosity is the dominant factor in driving the mass loss throughout the range of spectral types from mid-B main-sequence to Of. The winds in Be stars may represent a straightforward extension of the OB wind phenomenon to lower luminosities, and there appears to be no significant difference between B and Be stars in terms of their wind characteristics.

Extension of the hole-drilling method to birefringent composites

A complete stress analysis and reliable failure criteria are essential for important structural applications of composites in order to fully utilize their unique properties. The inhomogeneity, anisotropy and inelasticity of many composites make the use of experimental methods indispensable. Among the experimental techniques, transmission photoelasticity has been extended to birefringent composites in recent years. The extension is not straight-forward, in view of the complex nature of the photoelastic response of such model materials. This paper very briefly reviews the important developments in the subject and then describes the theoretical basis for a new method of determining the individual values of principal stresses in composite models. The method consists in drilling very small holes at points where the state of stress has to be determined. Experiments are then described which verify the theoretical predictions. The limitations of the method are pointed out and it is concluded that valuable information concerning the state of stress in a composite model can be obtained through the suggested method.

Service evaluation of Aluminum-Brazed Titanium (ABTi) jet engine tailpipe extensions

Aluminum-brazed titanium (ABTi) jet engine tailpipe extensions were evaluated in commercial service over a 3-year period. The purpose of the evaluation was to determine the corrosion resistance of ABTi in acoustic applications (i.e., honeycomb sandwich incorporating a perforated inner skin). The results showed that ABTi does not have acceptable corrosion resistance in acoustic applications under severe operating conditions, but may be acceptable for acoustic applications in less severe environments.

Submillimeter extensions of the solar limb determined from observations of the total eclipse of 1981 July 31

First results are presented of observations of a lunar occultation of the solar limb made from the Kuiper Airborne Observatory in the 30 micrometr, 50 micrometer, 100 micrometer, and 200 micrometer continuum during the total solar eclipse of 1981 July 31. The solar limb was extended at the longer wavelengths up to 1000 km higher than predicted from smooth plane-parallel chromospheric models. Results at both second and third contact show the infrared limb extensions to be approximately 0".8, 1"5, 2".5 and 3".0 above the visible limb in the observed bands, respectively. A possible interpretation proposes chromospheric fine structure inhomogeneities of greater density than presently incorporated in models of the middle chromosphere.

Extension of service life of rigid transfer lines /SMDC/

The results of a life evaluation program on rigid explosive transfer lines, which are used to initiate aircraft emergency crew escape functions, are presented in order to provide quantitative information on rigid explosive transfer lines which can contribute to responsible, conservative, service life determinations. The program involved the development of a test methodology, testing of the three types of transfer lines in use in the U.S., testing of these lines following a repeat of the thermal test conducted in the original qualification, and conducting a degradation investigation. Results from the testing of more than 800 components showed that rigid explosive transfer lines were not affected by age, service, or a repeat of the thermal qualification tests on full-service lines. The explosive degradation limits were approximated and the mechanisms examined. It is concluded that the service lives of rigid explosive transfer lines should be considered for extension in order to provide cost savings and increased system reliability.
