Compatibility of LaFe13−x−yMnxSiyH1.6 and Eutectic Liquid GaInSn Alloy

The heat transfer rate of magnetocaloric regenerators is a topic of extensive research and the cyclability of these regenerators is critical to the operation of systems with a high coefficient of performance (e.g., potentially >22, significantly higher than typical vapor compression cooling technologies). To enable a high operating frequency that will result in a high specific cooling power, the heat transfer fluid should have high thermal conductivity and lower specific heat, i.e., higher thermal diffusivity. Eutectic metal alloys possess these qualities, such as gallium–indium–tin (Galinstan), whose thermal diffusivity has been found to be approximately an order of magnitude higher than water. For this study, the effects of eutectic liquid Galinstan exposure on the phase stability of LaFe13−x−yMnxSiyH1.6 magnetocaloric powders in an active magnetic regenerator device were investigated. The powders were characterized before and after exposure to Galinstan using X-ray diffraction, in which the phases were determined using the Rietveld refinement technique and X-ray fluorescence. It was found that after Galinstan exposure, hydrogen containing phases were present in the powder, suggesting that the hydrogen was lost from the magnetocaloric phase. The magnetocaloric phase degradation indicates that the powder was incompatible with the Galinstan metal in an environment with moisture.

Metals processing

The metals processing effort is directed towards improvement of performance and usefulness of materials through modification and control of shape and internal structure. Interaction of reactive gases, introduced into a plasma arc, with iron alloys were analyzed. The technology of magnesium production was assessed. The study of fast fluidized bed reactors is continued. Aspects of separation processes are being investigated. The development of high field superconducting composites for use in large magnetic fusion devices is also discussed. Processing, structure, and property relationships of superconducting materials and the substitution of precious metals in standard electrical contact and connector applications are tested. The influence of processing procedures on the structure of zircaloy and nickel base alloys with a goal of improving mechanical properties and performance is investigated. Investigation of the potential of metal insulator semiconductor junctions as photovoltaic devices is reported.

The generation of rolling moments with the superconducting solenoid model

The superconducting solenoid model is a pilot model core for levitation in a wind tunnel magnetic suspension system. This type of core would replace the ferromagnetic core typically installed in the model fuselage. For suspension purposes, the solenoid is operated upon by a set of electromagnets surrounding the wind tunnel which are to support and restrain the model at required positions and orientations under the influence of powerful aerodynamic disturbances. The subject of providing sources of magnets rolling moment for use when spanwise magnets, which can be used for winged models, are not available is covered. Several methods have emerged for generating a rolling moment based on the use of additional superconducting loops or magnetic poles positioned around or within the solenoid. Predictions of the moment capacities of superconducting loops in models sized for a large wind tunnel are presented. An existing prototype superconducting model proved a suitable vehicle for demonstrating and calibrating, at a smaller scale, some of the other roll elements based on magnetic pole devices. Calibration data are included.

Instabilities excited by an energetic ion beam and electron temperature anisotropy in tandem mirrors

Tandem mirrors are magnetic confinement devices, which have the objective to prevent a leaking out of ions in a central (solenoidal) cell at the end. This is accomplished by making use of an electrostatic potential, which is maintained by a denser plasma in mirror end cells. In the Tandem Mirror Experiment (TMX), Correll et al. (1982) have successfully verified the basic concepts involved in the design of the considered device. However, it was also found that the simple tandem mirror could not be easily scaled to a reactor-size device. Approaches for solving the arising problems were studied, taking into account also the utilization of a thermal barrier. In this connection, Winske et al. (1985) studied the nonlinear development of the instability in a finite beta plasma with isotropic electrons. The present investigation is concerned with an extension of the calculations conducted by Winske et al., giving attention to the parameter regime of the TMX. It is found that three instabilities can occur.

A simple circular-polarized antenna: Circular waveguide horn coated with lossy magnetic material

A circular waveguide horn coated with a lossy material in its interior wall can be used as an alternative to a corrugated waveguide for radiating a circularly polarized (CP) field. To achieve good CP radiation, the diameter of the structure must be larger than the free-space wavelength, and the coating material must be sufficiently lossy and magnetic. This device is cheaper and lighter in weight than the corrugated one.

Imaging Domains In Magnetic Garnets By Use Of TSMFM

Tunneling-stabilized magnetic-force microscopy (TSMFM) demonstrated to yield images of magnetic domains in low-coercivity magnetic garnets with perpendicular anisotropy. Ability to generate images of domain walls and minute vertical Bloch lines aids study of vertical-Bloch-line magnetic memory devices that contain garnets. TSMFM provides desired resolution because its resolution not limited by diffraction.

Large angle magnetic suspension test fixture

Over the past few decades, research has proven the feasibility of the concept of noncontacting magnetic bearing systems which operate with no wear or vibration. As a result, magnetic bearing systems are beginning to emerge as integral parts of modern industrial and aerospace systems. Further applications research is still required. NASA has loaned an existing magnetic bearing device, the Annular Suspension and Pointing System (ASPS), to ODU to permit student design teams the opportunity to pursue some of these studies. The ASPS is a protoype for a high-accuracy space payload pointing and vibration isolation system. The project objectives are to carry out modifications and improvements to the ASPS hardware to permit recommissioning in a 1-g (ground-based) environment. Following recommissioning, new applications will be studied and demonstrated, including a rotary joint for solar panels. The first teams designed and manufactured pole shims to reduce the air-gaps and raise the vertical force capability as well as on control system studies. The most recent team concentrated on the operation of a single bearing station, which was successfully accomplished with a PC-based digital controller. The paper will review the history and technical background of the ASPS hardware, followed by presentation of the progress made and the current status of the project.
