Metrological Guidance for the Calibration of Laboratory Glassware

This report provides technical guidance for the calibration of laboratory glassware to help the practitioner achieve traceability to the International System of Units and meet customer quality requirements. The discussion of traceability uses the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s seven essential elements of traceability as a framework. The guidance also includes how to determine when calibration is necessary, practical tips, and helpful references.

Spectral and Temperature-Dependent Optical Metrology: Towards More Robust, Effective and Durable Materials for Concentrated Solar Power

The primary objective of this project is to develop reliable and standardized spectroscopic measurement techniques to determine radiative properties, specifically the emittance and reflectance, of materials relevant for the next generation (Gen3) concentrated solar power (CSP) technologies. Experimental measurements will span near- and mid-infrared wavelengths (1–20 µm) with emphasis on quantifying the influences of: (1) operating temperatures of 25–1000 °C, (2) thermal cycling, and (3) environmental exposure of materials during operation (vacuum/air). A secondary goal is to develop open-access and digitized databases to host and share experimental data, together with standardized measurement protocols and operating procedures to determine optical properties of materials. This project will also include reasonable emphasis on developing predictive modeling tools to augment experimental data to extract more fundamental and material-specific radiative properties.

Swept-Lookback Deflectometry for High Performance Concentrating Solar Power Optical Metrology

This report describes an initial investigation into a proposed solution to the important problem of performing a detailed evaluation of heliostat optical performance, in situ in a heliostat field. Our approach is to place digital cameras in a position near the receiver where they look back toward the heliostat mirrors. The pixels of each camera sensor identify a set of small cells on the mirror surface, each corresponding to a “mixel.” By either passing reflected sunbeam over the camera or passing the camera through the reflected sunbeam, the cameras intercept sunlight reflected from each mixel. We then analyze the recorded video data to determine times when each mixel transitions from dark to light, and then back to dark. We then use these transitions to construct vectors from the camera to the mixel, and then from the mixel to the edge of the Sun at that moment. We then compute the surface normal at the mixel, which bisects the angle between these vectors. Performing this analysis for all mixels in the mirror yields a high-resolution map of slope across the mirror surface. We have implemented most of this process, successfully collecting data for an example heliostat facet and computing a preliminary estimated slope map. However, more work remains to complete this calculation, since certain factors and transformations are not yet included. Our observations so far support our hypothesis that such a system is possible, but we have not yet completed our quantitative evaluation of the concept.

Pushing the Boundaries of Coherence in Superconducting Quantum Systems at the SQMS Center for Computing, Sensing, and Metrology

This talk will highlight recent advances at the SQMS Center in understanding and mitigating decoherence in superconducting quantum systems, focusing on both transmon qubits and 3D superconducting cavities. I will present results from systematic studies of materials and devices, aimed at identifying key sources of loss: including two-level systems (TLS), quasiparticles, and other noise mechanisms. These studies span microwave loss characterization in materials such as niobium, tantalum, aluminum, and their native oxides, as well as substrate losses in silicon and sapphire. Using both qubits and cavities, we disentangle subsystem contributions to loss and develop a hierarchy of mitigation strategies. Through these efforts, we have achieved transmon coherence times exceeding one millisecond. I will also present investigations into quasiparticle dynamics, including bursts observed in qubits located above ground and in the Gran Sasso underground laboratory. Additional studies explore temperature dependence to distinguish between TLS and quasiparticle losses, and reveal that applying a magnetic field can reduce temporal T1 fluctuations in transmons. Building on these results, we demonstrate a record-coherence two-cell cavity-qudit system with coherence times exceeding 20 milliseconds. By leveraging sideband interactions and error-resilient protocols including measurement-based correction and post-selection, we achieve high-fidelity quantum state control. This includes preparation of Fock states up to N = 20 with fidelities over 95%, and two-mode entanglement with coherence-limited fidelities reaching 99.9% after post-selection. These achievements position the SQMS platform as a powerful foundation for scalable quantum information processing and high-dimensional qudit encodings. Finally, I will discuss how these ultra-coherent systems are being deployed in emerging quantum sensing applications, including dark matter searches and gravitational wave detection.

Machine Tool Metrology in support of carbide insert production

In the context of lab modernization, careful consideration must be given to existing technologies, processes, and knowledge to support the ongoing production, maintenance, and improvement of products for the nuclear enterprise. This consideration often involves analyzing manufacturing processes both to pursue modernization or automation and to ensure the ability to maintain manufacturing capability.
