Advanced Characterization in Advanced Manufacturing Workshop

The Advanced Manufacturing (AM) Work shop successfully convened experts from government, academia, and industry to address pressing scientific challenges and strengthen the AM user community. The workshop was held at the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Brookhaven National Laboratory during the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) and Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN) Users’ Meeting. Participation included researchers from Stony Brook University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University, Harvard University, Columbia University, and several other institutions across the United States and the world. In conclusion, the program featured three complementary components—oral presentations, a facility tour, and a brainstorming session— that together fostered collaboration and high lighted the transformative role of synchrotron based characterization in AM.

Feebly-interacting particles: FIPs 2022 Workshop Report

Particle physics today faces the challenge of explaining the mystery of dark matter, the origin of matter over anti-matter in the Universe, the origin of the neutrino masses, the apparent fine-tuning of the electro-weak scale, and many other aspects of fundamental physics. Perhaps the most striking frontier to emerge in the search for answers involves new physics at mass scales comparable to familiar matter, below the GeV-scale, or even radically below, down to sub-eV scales, and with very feeble interaction strength. New theoretical ideas to address dark matter and other fundamental questions predict such feebly interacting particles (FIPs) at these scales, and indeed, existing data provide numerous hints for such possibility. A vibrant experimental program to discover such physics is under way, guided by a systematic theoretical approach firmly grounded on the underlying principles of the Standard Model. This document represents the report of the FIPs 2022 workshop, held at CERN between the 17 and 21 October 2022 and aims to give an overview of these efforts, their motivations, and the decadal goals that animate the community involved in the search for FIPs.

Workshop summary: Kaons@CERN 2023

Kaon physics is at a turning point – while the rare-kaon experiments NA62 and KOTO are in full swing, the end of their lifetime is approaching and the future experimental landscape needs to be defined. With HIKE, KOTO-II and LHCb-Phase-II on the table and under scrutiny, it is a very good moment in time to take stock and contemplate about the opportunities these experiments and theoretical developments provide for particle physics in the coming decade and beyond. This paper provides a compact summary of talks and discussions from the Kaons@CERN 2023 workshop, held in September 2023 at CERN.

Cold atoms in space: community workshop summary and proposed road-map

We summarise the discussions at a virtual Community Workshop on Cold Atoms in Space concerning the status of cold atom technologies, the prospective scientific and societal opportunities offered by their deployment in space, and the developments needed before cold atoms could be operated in space. The cold atom technologies discussed include atomic clocks, quantum gravimeters and accelerometers, and atom interferometers. Prospective applications include metrology, geodesy and measurement of terrestrial mass change due to, e.g., climate change, and fundamental science experiments such as tests of the equivalence principle, searches for dark matter, measurements of gravitational waves and tests of quantum mechanics. We review the current status of cold atom technologies and outline the requirements for their space qualification, including the development paths and the corresponding technical milestones, and identifying possible pathfinder missions to pave the way for missions to exploit the full potential of cold atoms in space. Finally, we present a first draft of a possible road-map for achieving these goals, that we propose for discussion by the interested cold atom, Earth Observation, fundamental physics and other prospective scientific user communities, together with the European Space Agency (ESA) and national space and research funding agencies.

The Importance of Weather and Climate to Energy Systems: A Workshop on Next Generation Challenges in Energy–Climate Modeling

More than 80 international participants, representing weather, climate, and energy systems research, joined two 4-hour remote sessions to highlight and prioritize ongoing and future challenges in energy-climate modelling. The workshop had two primary goals: to build a deeper engagement across the “energy” and “climate” research communities, and to identify and begin to address the scientific challenges associated with modelling climate risk in energy systems.

Simulation of X-ray Hartmann wavefront sensing with the Synchrotron Radiation Workshop

X-ray wavefront measurement is an important beam diagnostic tool, especially for the diffraction-limited X-ray beam. These in situ diagnostics give a better understanding of beam imperfections, and they enable feedback for possible corrections and/or optical alignment improvements. Hartmann wavefront sensing is one of the promising techniques to perform in situ X-ray wavefront measurements. In this work, a simulation tool of the X-ray Hartmann Wavefront Sensor (HWS) is developed under the Synchrotron Radiation Workshop (SRW) framework. Using this new simulation capability, one can take advantage of the full SRW package to simulate Hartmann wavefront sensing with the beam traveling from the X-ray source to the sample through different X-ray optical components. This SRW HWS simulation tool can help to optimize the wavefront sensor parameters for a specific X-ray energy range. It can also simulate an in situ wavefront measurement experiment with a particular beamline optical layout and predict the expected results of the wavefront measurement under different beamline configurations.
