Partial redistribution effects in the formation of hydrogen lines in quiescent prominences

Departures from complete frequency redistribution (CRD) in hydrogen lines are investigated for solar prominences. Partial redistribution effects (PRD) are found both in the wings (their already known lowering) and in the central part of the L alpha line; a new feature is evidenced here: the partially coherent scattering in the near wings of the line leads to a double-peaked profile mirroring the incident solar radiation. With a low density model, we obtain a good agreement with OSO 8 observed profiles. On the contrary, the PRD computed L beta profile (lower density, no reversal) departs from the observed one, a result which calls for more progress in terms of non-LTE transfer and modelling.

Stigmatically focusing partial pressure analyzer with dual chamber ion source

The partial pressure analyzer developed has a high absolute sensitivity and high resolution. Interaction effects, as they occur in conventional partial pressure analyzers between the heating filament for the emission of electrons and the residual gas, are suppressed by removing the heating filament from the measurement area. The electron beam is generated in an auxiliary vacuum compartment, and passes subsequently through an aperture into the ionization compartment. The probability is small, therefore, that the presence of substances produced at the heating filament by chemical reactions and thermal decompositions will have disturbing effects. The high sensitivity and resolution of the instrument are obtained with the aid of an electron path configuration of unconventional characteristics.

Observation model and parameter partials for the JPL VLBI parameter estimation software MASTERFIT-1987

This report is a revision of the document of the same title (1986), dated August 1, which it supersedes. Model changes during 1986 and 1987 included corrections for antenna feed rotation, refraction in modelling antenna axis offsets, and an option to employ improved values of the semiannual and annual nutation amplitudes. Partial derivatives of the observables with respect to an additional parameter (surface temperature) are now available. New versions of two figures representing the geometric delay are incorporated. The expressions for the partial derivatives with respect to the nutation parameters have been corrected to include contributions from the dependence of UTI on nutation. The authors hope to publish revisions of this document in the future, as modeling improvements warrant.

Partial redistribution in high-density, highly ionized plasmas

The conditions for which partial redistribution functions must be used for radiation transport in high-Z, high-density, laser-produced plasmas are examined. A previously developed two-photon formalism based on the model microfield method is used to calculate redistribution functions including electron and ion Stark broadening with ion dynamic effects. The competition between the relaxation rates and spontaneous emission is shown to determine the conditions for partial redistribution. The discussion makes use of microfield fluctuation rates and broadening coefficients which can be determined from simulation calculations. The redistribution function for the Ly-alpha transition of Ar XVIII is presented for typical plasma conditions.

Textural evolution of partially-molten planetary materials in microgravity

Recent Earth-based experiments examining the textural evolution of partially-molten rocks have revealed two important ways in which surface energy considerations affect magma. An initial experimental program addressing surface-energy effects on partially-molten materials in microgravity would involve simple, isothermal treatment of natural samples (meteorites, perioditic komatiite) at preselected temperatures in the melting range. Textural evolution would be assessed by time studies in which the only experiment variable would be run duration. Textural characterization of each sample would be done by quenching, recover, and sectioning for generally later, computer-aided interpretation of features.

Nested hierarchical controller with partial autonomy

The problem of computer architecture for intelligent robots with partial autonomy is addressed. A robot with partial autonomy is considered a degenerated case of a fully autonomous robot. Thus, the problem of man-machine communication is formulated, and the conditions are determined for generating a language for such a communication. The duties of the master are determined.

Magnetic reconnection in partially ionized gases

Magnetic field lines in a plasma reconnect at a rate scaled by the Alfven speed. In a partially ionized gas there are two natural Alfven speeds: one determined by the ionized mass density alone, which applies when ion-neutral friction is negligible, and one determined by the total mass density, which applies when ion-neutral friction is strong. When the ionization fraction is low, as in a dense molecular cloud, these two speeds differ by several orders of magnitude. Both time-dependent tearing modes and steady-state magnetic reconnection in partially ionized gas are considered, and the regimes in which the charged and neutral components are strongly, intermediately, and weakly coupled are delineated. Molecular clouds are probably in the intermediate regime, while reconnection in solar prominences probably has strong ion-neutral coupling. Reconnection proceeds more rapidly when coupling is not strong.

Biological nitrogen fixation under primordial Martian partial pressures of dinitrogen

One of the most striking differences between the conditions on early Mars and earth was a low (18 mb) partial pressure of N2 (pN2) on early Mars, as opposed to 780 mb N2 on earth. To investigate the possibility of biological nitrogen fixation under conditions of early Mars, experiments were carried out on the growth of Azotobacter vinelandii and Azomonas agilis in nitrogen-free synthetic medium under various partial pressures of N2 (ranging from 780 to 0 mb). It was found that, although the biomass, cell number, and growth rate of these bacteria decreased with decreasing pN2 values below pN2 of 400 mb, both microorganisms were capable of growing at pN2 as low as 5 mb (but not at of below 1 mb), indicating that biological fixation of nitrogen could have occurred on primordial Mars.

Ground-state coding in partially connected neural networks

Patterns over (-1,0,1) define, by their outer products, partially connected neural networks, consisting of internally strongly connected, externally weakly connected subnetworks. The connectivity patterns may have highly organized structures, such as lattices and fractal trees or nests. Subpatterns over (-1,1) define the subcodes stored in the subnetwork, that agree in their common bits. It is first shown that the code words are locally stable stares of the network, provided that each of the subcodes consists of mutually orthogonal words or of, at most, two words. Then it is shown that if each of the subcodes consists of two orthogonal words, the code words are the unique ground states (absolute minima) of the Hamiltonian associated with the network. The regions of attraction associated with the code words are shown to grow with the number of subnetworks sharing each of the neurons. Depending on the particular network architecture, the code sizes of partially connected networks can be vastly greater than those of fully connected ones and their error correction capabilities can be significantly greater than those of the disconnected subnetworks. The codes associated with lattice-structured and hierarchical networks are discussed in some detail.

Partial gravity habitat study: With application to lunar base design

Comprehensive design requirements associated with designing habitats for humans in a partial gravity environment were investigated and then applied to a lunar base design. Other potential sites for application include planetary surfaces such as Mars, variable gravity research facilities, or a rotating spacecraft. Design requirements for partial gravity environments include: (1) locomotion changes in less than normal Earth gravity; (2) facility design issues, such as interior configuration, module diameter and geometry; and (3) volumetric requirements based on the previous as well as psychological issues involved in prolonged isolation. For application to a Lunar Base, it was necessary to study the exterior architecture and configuration to insure optimum circulation patterns while providing dual egress. Radiation protection issues were addressed to provide a safe and healthy environment for the crew, and finally, the overall site was studied to locate all associated facilities in context with the habitat. Mission planning was not the purpose of this study; therefore, a Lockheed scenario was used as an outline for the Lunar Base application, which was then modified to meet the project needs.

Interfacial effects on the behavior of partially bonded metal matrix composite properties

A novel computational method developed at NASA-Lewis in order to predict the behavior of unidirectional composites has been used to explore the effects of partial debonding and fiber fracture on the behavior of room temperature and high temperature metal-matrix composites. Attention is presently given to the influence of disbonding, which occurs with fractured fibers, on the ply properties of metal-matrix composites with orthotropic fibers, in the case of a graphite fiber-reinforced copper-matrix composite. It is shown that, for small amounts of partial bonding on fractured fibers, composite material properties are not significantly affected.

Statistical Partial Calibration Of Polarimetric SAR Imagery

Mathematical technique for partial calibration of quadpolarization synthetic-aperture-radar (SAR) image data makes possible to remove partially those contaminating cross-polarization effects (crosstalk) arising in antenna(s) and/or other transmitting and receiving channels. Quadpolarization data processed with help of technique better approximates backscattering properties of target area. If corner reflectors or other known discrete radar targets placed in target area, all of data channels calibrated both relatively to each other and absolutely.

Report on the formal specification and partial verification of the VIPER microprocessor

The formal specification and partial verification of the VIPER microprocessor is reviewed. The VIPER microprocessor was designed by RSRE, Malvern, England, for safety critical computing applications (e.g., aircraft, reactor control, medical instruments, armaments). The VIPER was carefully specified and partially verified in an attempt to provide a microprocessor with completely predictable operating characteristics. The specification of VIPER is divided into several levels of abstraction, from a gate-level description up to an instruction execution model. Although the consistency between certain levels was demonstrated with mechanically-assisted mathematical proof, the formal verification of VIPER was never completed.

Partial gravity - Human impacts on facility design

Partial gravity affects the body differently than earth gravity and microgravity environments. The main difference from earth gravity is human locomotion; while the main dfference from microgravity is the specific updown orientation and reach envelopes which increase volume requirements. Much data are available on earth gravity and microgravity design; however, very little information is available on human reactions to reduced gravity levels in IVA situations (without pressure suits). Therefore, if humans commit to permanent lunar habitation, much research should be conducted in the area of partial gravity effects on habitat design.

Partial melting of the Allende (CV3) meteorite - Implications for origins of basaltic meteorites

Eucrites and angrites are distinct types of basaltic meteorites whose origins are poorly known. Experiments in which samples of the Allende (CV3) carbonaceous chondrite were partially melted indicate that partial melts can resemble either eucrites or angrites, depending only on the oxygen fugacity. Melts are eucritic if this variable is below that of the iron-wuestite buffer or angritic if above it. With changing pressure, the graphite-oxygen redox reaction can produce oxygen fugacities that are above or below those of the iron-wuestite buffer. Therefore, a single, homogeneous, carbonaceous planetoid greater than 110 kilometers in radius could produce melts of drastically different composition, depending on the depth of melting.

Measurements of Pressure Distributions and Force Coefficients in a Squeeze Film Damper. Part 2: Partially Sealed Configuration

Experimental results from a partially sealed squeeze film damper (SFD) test rig, executing a circular centered orbit are presented and discussed. A serrated piston ring is installed at the damper exit. This device involves a new sealing concept which produces high damping values while allowing for oil flow to cool the damper. In the partially sealed damper, large cavitation regions are observed in the pressure fields at orbit radii epsilon equals 0.5 and epsilon equals 0.8. The cavitated pressure distributions and the corresponding force coefficients are compared with a cavitated bearing solution. The experimental results show the significance of fluid inertia and vapor cavitation in the operation of squeeze film dampers. Squeeze film Reynolds numbers tested reach up to Re equals 50, spanning the range of contemporary applications.

Microstructure and magnetization of Y-Ba-Cu-O prepared by melt quenching, partial melting and doping

Y-Ba-Cu-O samples prepared by means of a variety of melt-based techniques exhibit high values for their magnetic properties compared with those of samples prepared by solid state sintering. These techniques include single-stage partial melting as well as melt quenching followed by a second heat treatment stage, and they have been applied to the stoichiometric 123 composition as well as to formulations containing excess yttrium or other dopants. The structure of these melt-based samples is highly aligned, and the magnetization readings exhibit large anisotropy. At 77 K and magnetic field intensities of about 2 kOe, diamagnetic susceptibilities as high as -14 x 10(exp -3) emu/g were obtained in the cases of melt-quenched samples and remanent magnetization values as high as 10 emu/g for samples prepared by partial melting.

Partially coherent scattering in stellar chromospheres. I - Effects on resonance line thermalization

The conditions necessary for partially coherent scattering to influence the thermalization depth are investigated, and the effects of partial redistribution in homogeneous slab atmospheres are approximated using several common resonance lines as examples. For electron densities above 10 exp 10/cu cm, it is concluded that even when coherent scattering dominates the escape process, the thermalization depths of the strongest resonance lines of H, Ca II, and Mg II agree roughly with the Doppler diffusion in frequency. No elastic scattering effects on the thermalization of Mg II h and k and Ca II H and K are found. At lower densities, such as for giant star chromospheres and QSO models, the results deviate strongly from the Doppler complete redistribution case.
