Qthreads Support for MPICH

SAND2024-00944O Qthread Support for MPICH is software that provides additions needed to enable the use of the Qthreads library. The high-performance message passing interface (MPICH) is an open-source implementation of MPI mainly developed and distributed by Argonne National Laboratory. Qthreads is a lightweight, user-level threading library developed and distributed by Sandia National Laboratories. MPICH currently supports Posix threads, Windows threads, and Argobots. This software enables parallel programs built with the MPICH implementation of MPI to use Qthreads user-level threads rather than Posix system-level threads. The software uses existing infrastructure in MPICH to interface to the Qthreads library. The existing interfaces in MPICH allow for creating, destroying, and managing the execution of multiple threads within a process and this software translates these calls to the equivalent Qthreads library functions. Sandia National Laboratories is a multimission laboratory managed and operated by National Technology & Engineering Solutions of Sandia, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc., for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration under contract DE-NA0003525.

Development of an in situ ion irradiation scanning electron microscope

An in situ ion irradiation scanning electron microscope (I 3 SEM) has been developed, installed, and integrated into the Ion Beam Laboratory at Sandia National Laboratories. The I 3 SEM facility combines a field emission, variable pressure, scanning electron microscope, a 6 MV tandem accelerator, high flux low energy ion source, an 808 nm-wavelength laser, and multiple stages to control the thermal and mechanical state of the sample observed. The facility advances real-time understanding of materials evolution under combined environments at the mesoscale. As highlighted in multiple examples, this unique combination of tools is optimized for studying mesoscale material response in overlapping extreme environments, allowing for simultaneous ion irradiation, implantation, laser bombardment, conductive heating, cooling, and mechanical deformation.

Experimental Investigation of Subcritical Neutron and Gamma Noise Methods at the Seven Percent Critical Experiment (7uPCX)

As part of a collaborative international effort organized by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), with key participants from the Institut de radioprotection et de sûreté nucléaire (IRSN), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), a series of high-multiplication subcritical neutron and gamma noise measurements was planned and executed. The primary aim of this article was to advance detector technology, assess the validity of gamma noise for subcriticality measurements, and nuclear criticality safety, focusing on collecting list-mode or time-series data from various reactor configurations with multiplication values ranging from 20 to 310. This comprehensive dataset enabled a detailed comparative analysis of multiple detector systems and the results of both neutron and gamma noise measurements. In this work, we focus on experimentally comparing the results from neutron and gamma noise measurements. We note good agreement between estimations of the prompt neutron decay constant and demonstrate the effects of changing reactor geometry on the efficiency of the differing methods. Our results agree well with independent experimental measurements and simulations performed by LLNL.

Sensitivity Analysis of MFiX-PIC Parameters Using Nodeworks, PSUADE, and DAKOTA

The study presented in this report was aimed to demonstrate UQ analysis performed not only with Nodeworks, but also two other well-established UQ software tools from the U.S. DOE’s National Laboratories (PSUADE from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and DAKOTA from Sandia National Laboratory). It is important to emphasize that the motivation of this study was not to determine the best UQ software, but to verify if the global sensitivity analyses from the end-to-end workflow in Nodeworks are consistent with the results of other two UQ software. The components of Nodeworks from Python’s ecosystem have been tested as standalone libraries. However, an assessment study for the complete workflow targeting a specific UQ analysis has not been performed for Nodeworks. Hence, this study is expected to serve as an equivalent of solution verification for Nodeworks using other established UQ tools as reference solution. For this purpose, three distinct flow configurations (i.e., settling bed, bubbling fluidized, and circulating fluidized bed) have been used as representative multiphase flow problems of interest. The results of the systematic simulation campaigns performed in an earlier study using the particle-in-cell (PIC) approach in the Multiphase Flow with Interphase eXchanges (MFIX) suite of solvers (i.e., MFiX-PIC) was utilized. The same set of tabulated results was provided as input to the different UQ software for global sensitivity analysis. Results for the three cases indicate that based on the Sobol’ Sensitivity Indices method the order of importance ranking determined by Nodeworks for the Sobol’ Total Sensitivity Indices is consistent with PSUADE and DAKOTA in each case for the five model parameters considered. The input files for Nodeworks for the three cases are also shared through NETL’s Gitlab repository for the reader interested in reproducibility and further analysis (See Section 1.2).

2023 SRNL Aging and Lifetimes Report: Tritium Aging of Welded and Additively Manufactured Austenitic Stainless Steels

This report documents work performed in fiscal year 2023 at Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) collaborating with Sandia National Laboratories in support of the Aging and Lifetimes program. This work supports Gas Transfer Systems (GTS) design by measuring the mechanical behavior of structural materials used in GTS. Data on properties in relevant conditions are crucial for GTS lifetime assessments and predictions. To simulate relevant conditions, SRNL, in concert with the Savannah River Site, thermally pre-charges test specimens with tritium and stores them at -80°C to allow the tritium decay product, helium-3, to build up while limiting tritium diffusion. According to test plans based on how much helium-3 has accumulated, specimens are removed from storage and tested. Results from mechanical testing provide an empirical basis for GTS design as well as insight to how these structural materials degrade in a tritium environment.

Integrase-on-Demand

SAND2025-07449O Integrase-on-Demand is a software tool that allows users to identify regions in genomic sequences where genetic material can be integrated with high probability. It uses a database of integrases and their DNA attachment sites to search against any genomic sequence, producing a list of open sites, the integrase sequence, and the source of the genomic island. VoroClust

SAND2025-11465O VoroClust, also known as Voronoi Clustering, is a fast, density-based unsupervised clustering algorithm applicable to high-resolution and high-dimensional data. It operates as quickly as distance-based clustering methods while effectively capturing complex regional geometries, matching the performance of current density-based methods. VoroClust employs a data-centered sphere cover to reduce computational demands while preserving data topology. It propagates clusters outward from local density peaks. Although supervised machine learning is powerful for applications like image classification and segmentation, it requires comprehensive, consistent datasets, which many applications lack. Unsupervised clustering algorithms analyze the structure of each dataset rather than relying on similarities with other examples, making them well-suited for practical applications with insufficient or inappropriate data for supervised learning.
