Description of the installations at the Pleumeur-Bodou Space Communications Station

The Pleumeur-Bodou Ground Station, the research center of the National Ceneter for Telecommunications, is equipped to study all problems connected with active satellites: link performance, acquisition, tracking, telemetry, and command. This station is also intended for possible future commercial applications.

Laser space communication experiment: Modulator technology

Results are presented of a contractual program to develop the modulator technology necessary for a 10.6 micron laser communication system using cadmium telluride as the modulator material. The program consisted of the following tasks: (1) The growth of cadmium telluride crystals of sufficient size and purity and with the necessary optical properties for use as laser modulator rods. (2) Develop a low loss antireflection coating for the cadmium telluride rods. (3) Design and build a modulator capable of 300 MHz modulation. (4) Develop a modulator driver capable of a data rate of 300 MBits/sec, 12 W rms output power, and 40 percent efficiency. (5) Assemble and test the modulator system. All design goals were met and the system was built and tested.

High power microwave components for space communications satellite

Analyzed, developed, and tested were high power microwave components for communications satellites systems. Included were waveguide and flange configurations with venting, a harmonic filter, forward and reverse power monitors, electrical fault sensors, and a diplexer for two channel simultaneous transmission. The assembly of 8.36 GHz components was bench tested, and then operated for 60 hours at 3.5 kW CW in a high vacuum. The diplexer was omitted from this test pending a modification of its end irises. An RF leakage test showed only that care is required at flange junctions; all other components were RF tight. Designs were extrapolated for 12 GHz and 2.64 GHz high power satellite systems.

Millimeter wave space communications - Recent experimental results and present development programs.

Major results of millimeter wave propagation measurements conducted with the ATS-5 satellite are reviewed, and their impact on the design of operational millimeter wave communications systems is evaluated. Statistical results show attenuation probabilities in different localities at various intervals of observation in an attempt at correlation with precipitation conditions. Advanced millimeter wave propagation experiments currently under development for the ATS-F satellite are also discussed.
