Optimizing cost-effective and benchmarked industry standards to quantify nutrient bioextraction by seaweed

Interest in the utility of seaweed farms to mitigate coastal eutrophication, or nutrient loading, has grown commensurate with the recent rise of the farmed seaweed industry in the U.S. But economic valuation of this ecosystem service remains elusive in part because of challenges in quantifying this spatiotemporally variable biological process with reproducible and comparable metrics. Regulatory bodies that permit wastewater discharge or lease area for aquaculture farms require water quality testing and reporting of dissolved total nitrogen (N) in nearshore marine environments. These metrics must meet EPA standards for testing and reporting (e.g., Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen - TKN). However, these metrics are inherently highly variable over space and time in dynamic nearshore systems, and expensive to evaluate with sufficient breadth to constrain this variance, creating a critical bottleneck to direct quantification of farmed seaweed net uptake rates in situ.

BACKFLIP: A Comparison of Market-Benchmark Backsheet Technologies to Novel Non-Fluoro-Based Coextruded Materials and Their Correlation and Impact on PV Module Degradation Rates: Final Results of the Study at 4000 Hours or 2 Years

As the photovoltaic (PV) industry is rapidly expanding around the world, there has been an increasing interest in extending the lifespan of PV modules. Concern has also emerged regarding the recyclability of modules and their component materials, including fluoropolymer-based backsheets. Laminated polyethylene-terephthalate (PET) core backsheets have traditionally been used in the PV industry, but new, co-extruded polyolefin (PO) backsheets show promise as an improved alternative. Mini-module and coupon samples of seven different backsheets (made of layers including contemporary PET and fluoropolymers, novel PO, and polyamide (PA) materials) were run through hygrometric- or UV photolytic-accelerated aging to identify and better understand each material's degradation modes and the backsheets' field reliability. In addition to the artificial aging, the natural weathering methods used in this study are described. The comprehensive set of chemical, mechanical, and structural characterizations at intermittent read points in this study is presented, including: visual appearance and color; gloss; mechanical tensile testing; I-V performance; electroluminescence (EL) imaging; dielectric breakdown; FTIR-chemical structure; X-ray-polymer structure (WAXS); and DSC-crystalline content. After 4000 h of accelerated aging or 2y of outdoor aging, a strong correlation occurs between initial physical characteristics (mechanical tensile test) and operating performance (EL and I-V characteristics).

Summer Internship Report: ARA2 Benchmarking

Over the past decade, the RISC-V Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) has emerged as a significant player in both academic and industrial processor design due to its open-source nature, modular extension system, and versatility across domains ranging from microcontrollers to high-performance computing (HPC). One of its most important recent advancements is the RISC-V Vector Extension (RVV), which enables explicit data-level parallelism through vector registers and vectorized instructions. Unlike traditional SIMD (Single Instruction, Multiple Data) architectures that fix vector lengths at design time, RVV uses the concept of VLEN (vector register length) as a hardware-independent parameter and allows software to adapt dynamically to the available vector width. This flexible approach ensures portability across implementations while enabling scalable performance. The ARA2 core is a parameterizable RISC-V vector processor developed at the Integrated Systems Lab at ETH Zürich and the University of Bologna. Designed as a tightly-coupled accelerator to a scalar RISC-V core, ARA2 implements the RVV 1.0 specification and offers tunable architectural parameters such as the number of vector lanes, VLEN, and cache sizes.

Cerberus and the Zeus Suite of Critical Experiment Benchmarks [Slides]

This presentation finds that as it was designed, Cerberus is extremely sensitive to copper nuclear data. Just changing copper nuclear data to another library can swing simulated keff by >1000 pcm. ENDF/B-VIII.1 and JENDL-5.0 both show large downward trends in keff as copper interstitial thickness is increased
