BBOS: Efficient HPC Storage Management via Burst Buffer Over-Subscription

To avoid access to PFS, dedicated BB allocation is preferred despite of severe BB underutilization. Recently, new all-flash HPC storage systems with integrated BB and PFS are proposed, which speed up access to PFS. For this reason, we adopt BB over-subscription allocation method by allowing HPC applications to use BB only for I/O phase for improving BB utilization. Unfortunately, BB over-subscription aggravates I/O interference and demotion overhead from BB to PFS, resulting in degraded performance. To minimize the performance degradation, we develop an I/O scheduler to prevent I/O congestion and a new transparent data management system based on checkpoint/restart characteristics of HPC applications. With the proposed approach, not only the BB utilization can be improved, but also high performance of applications is achieved. In our experiments, we find that BB utilization is improved at least 2.2x, and more stable and higher checkpoint performance is guaranteed compared to other approaches. Besides, we achieve up to 96.4% hit ratio of restart requests on BB and up to 3.1x higher restart performance than others.

Towards a III-V Solar Cell with a Metamorphic Graded Buffer Directly Grown on V-Groove Si Substrates

V-groove Si substrates offer a promising route for the direct growth of III-V solar cells on low-cost, photovoltaic-grade Si. In this work, we develop a method for coalescing GaP nucleated on V-groove substrates into thin films suitable for the growth of III-V solar cells. We demonstrate the ability to suppress nucleation-related defects by modifying the V-groove substrate to cover the (0 0 1)-oriented Si V-groove tops with SiN x . A threading dislocation density (TDD) of 5 × 10 7 cm -2 was measured with electron channeling contrast imaging. Continuing work will focus on further reducing the TDD and the growth of a GaAs solar cell on a GaP on V-groove Si template.

High Efficiency Evaporated CdSeTe/CdTe Solar Cells With and Without MgZnO Buffer Layer

High efficiencies of ~19% CdTe solar cell devices were made using a thermal evaporation technique to deposit absorber layers of CdSe and CdTe. The absorber films were very high quality for a device fabrication, and with demonstrated high efficiency, it is a viable option to employ thermal evaporation in research and manufacturing. We also investigated four different interfaces scenarios of with and without MZO and CdSe in the device near front interface. The results clearly indicate that Se plays a key role in improving device performance, but the MZO is not necessarily required unless experiment goals demanded. Removing the MZO layer from the device structure and being able to use thermal evaporator for CdTe deposition will help with cost reduction in manufacturing.

Quantifying the Potential Atmospheric Leakage Risks Associated With the Geologic Storage of CO 2 in Saline Aquifers for Use in Voluntary Carbon Market Buffer Account Determination

Conference paper presented at 17th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies (GHGT-17), Calgary, Alberta, Canada, October 20–24, 2024. This paper presents the results of a detailed study into the potential atmospheric leakage risks associated with the geologic storage of CO 2 in saline aquifers. This study included a detailed literature review, a re-creation of existing CO 2 leakage models put forth by other authors and, lastly, the development of an enhanced model that can be utilized for assessing the potential losses to the atmosphere of stored CO 2 across a variety of potential project parameters. The results of this study indicate that, across broad ranges of input parameters for mechanisms that have the potential for CO 2 loss from the storage complex to the atmosphere, there is an extremely low risk of CO 2 leakage to the atmosphere, with the median leakage risk estimated to be 0.1% of total injected CO 2 . The risk of leakage from real-world storage projects is likely to be even lower than those estimated through this study.

Room-temperature rack-mounted quantum buffer for high-rate time-bin qubits

This report summarizes the results from DE-SC0022395, a phase 1 SBIR award to investigate the feasibility of designing a commercial quantum memory using gradient echo techniques for storage. The authors conclude that the technology has several key limitations which would present significant barriers to practical commercialization for quantum networking.

Low-cost buffer storage for solar industrial steam applications

Motivation and importance: Many industrial process heat consumers operate throughout the day, and deep decarbonization with solar energy requires thermal energy storage. Thermal energy storage provides an additional operational benefit of firm delivery of steam – essential to reducing the risk of costly production interruptions. The group of process heat consumers that use steam for biofuels production for the California transportation fuels market is incentivized through the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) to reduce their carbon intensity through the use of solar steam. Examples include ethanol and dimethyl ether production. The production of these and other fuels involves distillation driven by steam reboilers with steam pressures in the range 100-280 psig. These pressures can be delivered from the type of thermal energy storage that has been the focus of this project – a steam accumulator Sunvapor, Inc. (SVI) calls a “Bullet Steam Accumulator” or “BSA TM ”. Our project adds to the understanding of the design and integration of steam accumulators charged by solar thermal energy in a biofuels production facility, and similar facilities that consume process steam. The fuel application requires a demanding level of Process Safety Management not found in other steam applications. The type of steam accumulator SVI engineered and built integrates steam generation and storage in one vessel to reduce cost. Achieving a first of a kind permit to operate such a first device has also added to the understanding of the industrial application of such systems. Goals: The overall goal of the project has been to demonstrate the advantages that a “Bullet Steam Accumulator” (BSA™) can provide to solar steam integration with a manufacturing process. The industrial host has already been convinced of the potential of the available solar steam to lower than carbon intensity score. They have been interviewed for a number of publications such as that tout the advantages SVI’s system brings to their operations. Accomplishments: At the end of 2023 Sunvapor placed in service the country’s first industrial solar boiler with thermal energy storage. At the same time, this placement in service represents the first pilot commercial system to decarbonize biofuels production through the use of solar thermal energy. While the full technical effectiveness will be shown as soon as the customer’s plant is able to consume the available steam, the economic feasibility was indicated early in the project when the combination of costs and steam pricing required to meet investor expectations was determined. The project represents a reference pilot from which a full-scale commercial system may be expanded. This pilot is a necessary first step in providing the full potential benefits to the public, including decarbonization of transportation fuels. The decarbonization of the separation steps in fuels production may be the most cost-effective and nearest term solar fuel. Co-benefits include a reduction of air pollutants such as NOx and particulate matter, and job creation for the construction, operation and maintenance of industrial solar facilities.
