The application of trend surface analysis to a portion of the Apollo 15 X-ray fluorescence data

X-ray fluorescence data for 8 and 16 second time integrals gathered by Apollo 15 in circum lunar orbit were analyzed to determine the capability for chemical mapping of relatively small lunar features in a portion of Tranquillitatis and Serenitatis basins. Spatial mapping using trend surface analysis demonstrated that a useable signal could be extracted from Al/Si intensity ratios calculated for 8 second time spans. Reliability of the Al/Si ratio was enhanced when 16 second data were compiled using a sliding average technique. Residual anomalies from the trend surface mapping were identified and correlated with relatively small lunar surface features.

Solar flare line emission between 6 A and 25 A

A list of emission lines in the spectra of solar flares between 6 and 25 A has been compiled using data obtained with a KAP crystal spectrometer on the OSO-5 satellite. The emission lines have been classified according to their sensitivity to flare activity. This classification provides a method for discriminating between iron in high stages of ionization (Fe XX-Fe XXV) and lower stages (Fe XVII-Fe XIX), the lines of which are both present in the same spectral region during flares. Identifications consistent with these classifications are proposed. Anomalous intensities in the spectra of Fe XVII and Fe XX are pointed out, and implications of the observations for models of the X-ray emitting regions are discussed.

Antiphase domains in lunar plagioclase

The paper is a compilation of data on antiphase domains in lunar plagioclase. New observations and reports in the literature are tabulated and discussed. In the pattern which emerges (but is still very incomplete), it appears that b-domains, which except for the An 82 bytownite from the Stillwater complex have only been observed in lunar feldspars, occur in the anorthite range An 80 to 95. Especially in the sodium rich part there seems to be a close relation between an exsolution structure and b-APB's. The c-APB's are found in anorthites An 95 to 100 and for a given An-content they are larger for metamorphic than for volcanic anorthites. Near An 95, c- and b-domains can be observed in the same crystal. The c-domains disappear when heated above 1200 C; they are not affected by heating below 600 C. This implies that calcic anorthite without c-domains must have been rapidly quenched from high temperatures.

Transportation vehicle energy intensities. A joint DOT/NASA reference paper

A compilation of data on the energy consumption of air and ground vehicles is presented. The ratio BTU/ASM, British Thermal Units/Available Seat Mile, is used to express vehicle energy intensiveness, and related to the energy consumed directly in producing seat-mile or ton-mile productivity. Data is presented on passenger and freight vehicles which are in current use or which are about to enter service, and advanced vehicles which may be operational in the 1980's and beyond. For the advanced vehicles, an estimate is given of the date of initial operational service, and the performance characteristics. Other key considerations in interpreting energy intensiveness for a given mode are discussed, such as: load factors, operations, overhead energy consumption, and energy investments in new structure and equipment.

Low vapor pressure braze alloys for thermionic energy converters

The evaluation of cesium diode electrode materials called for braze fillers with very low vapor pressures and a wide range of melting points. Binary alloys of low vapor pressure refractory metals were chosen to fill this need. These alloys of Th, Zr, Hf, Ru, Nb, Ir, Mo, Ta, Os, Re, and W have reported melting point minima or eutectics from 1,510 K to above 3,000 K. Preliminary data are compiled on the use of several of these braze alloys. Melting points and surface wetting on a Ta base are given. Results of brazing Ir, LaB6, Nb, Re, W, and Zr-22 wt % ZrO2 materials into Ta and Nb-1% Zr bases are presented. Current braze usage is summarized.

Applications of remote sensing, volume 3

The author has identified the following significant results. Of the four change detection techniques (post classification comparison, delta data, spectral/temporal, and layered spectral temporal), the post classification comparison was selected for further development. This was based upon test performances of the four change detection method, straightforwardness of the procedures, and the output products desired. A standardized modified, supervised classification procedure for analyzing the Texas coastal zone data was compiled. This procedure was developed in order that all quadrangles in the study are would be classified using similar analysis techniques to allow for meaningful comparisons and evaluations of the classifications.

Seasat low-rate data system

The Seasat low-rate data system, an end-to-end data-processing and data-distribution system for the four low-rate sensors (radar altimeter, Seasat-A scatterometer system, scanning multichannel microwave radiometer, and visible and infrared radiometer) carried aboard the satellite, is discussed. The function of the distributed, nonreal-time, magnetic-tape system is to apply necessary calibrations, corrections, and conversions to yield geophysically meaningful products from raw telemetry data. The algorithms developed for processing data from the different sensors are described, together with the data catalogs compiled.

Venus - Preliminary topographic and surface imaging results from the Pioneer Orbiter

Three large Venus surface features, identified previously in images obtained from earth-based radar observations, are shown by the Pioneer Venus radar mapper to be elevated 5 to 10 km above the surrounding terrain. Two of these features, one bright and the other dark, lie adjacent to each other astride the 65 N parallel between longitudes 310 E and 10 E. The combined region forms a huge tectonically uplifted plateau, surmounted by radar-bright ridges that may have either a volcanic or tectonic origin. The third feature, located at 30 N, 283 E, is radar-bright and may consist of volcanic material extruded along a fault zone. A first radar-scattering image, compiled from data obtained by the mapper in its imaging mode, shows a region north of the equator; several circular depressions seen in this area may result from meteoritic impact.

Aerodynamic characteristics of a series of airbreathing missile configurations

The results of an experimental program conducted in order to compile a data base useful in the application of airbreathing propulsion to missiles are presented. The configurations investigated used two-dimensional or axisymmetric twin inlets located at three alternative circumferential positions: 90, 115 and 135 deg to the vertical centerline. The effects of a wing located above the inlets and of various tail configurations were investigated, with a view to longitudinal stability/control and lateral-directional stability characteristics. It is noted that of the three tail configurations tested, the 'X' tail showed (1) the most linear pitch-moment curve, (2) control effectiveness, and (3) positive lateral-directional stability.

The technical report as an effective medium for information transmittal

The NASA technical report is evaluated to determine its effectiveness as a medium for information transmittal. Empirical data was compiled through a survey of report producers and through an assessment of report components, format, and organization found in current style manuals. It was found that little documented research exists to support or suggest criteria for assessing the effectiveness of a technical report. The survey showed that wide variances in the technical report exist: ninety-nine report producers generated ninety-eight different structural components, only five of which were used by 50% or more of the respondents. Moreover, 33% of the respondents claimed to use no style manual at all. Future research is planned to assess the adequacy of a reduced set of report components, clearly defining the purpose and evaluating the criteria for each component.
