Very low luminosity stars with very large amplitude flares

CCD frames of CZ Cnc, KY Cep, the gamma-ray burster optical transient, and NSV 12006 are analyzed. Also studied are 549 archival photographic plates of the CZ Cnc field. These observations are compared with the data of Lovas (1976). Flare events on CZ Cnc are examined. Based on the data it is noted that CZ Cnc is a main-sequence star, has a magnitude of 16.1, a distance of 100 pc, occasional large-amplitude flares, and frequent flares with amplitudes greater than 4 mag.

Light-induced suppression of endogenous circadian amplitude in humans

A recent demonstration that the phase of the human circadian pacemaker could be inverted using an unconventional three-cycle stimulus has led to an investigation of whether critically timed exposure to a more moderate stimulus could drive that oscillator toward its singularity, a phaseless position at which the amplitude of circadian oscillation is zero. It is reported here that exposure of humans to fewer cycles of bright light, centered around the time at which the human circadian pacemaker is most sensitive to light-induced phase shifts, can markedly attenuate endogenous cicadian amplitude. In some cases this results in an apparent loss of rhythmicity, as expected to occur in the region of singularity.

Finite element large-amplitude free and forced vibrations of rectangular thin composite plates

A finite element formulation is presented for determining the large-amplitude free and steady-state forced vibration response of arbitrarily laminated anisotropic composite rectangular thin plates. The nonlinear stiffness and harmonic force matrices of an arbitrarily laminated composite rectangular plate element are developed for nonlinear free and forced vibration analyses. The linearized updated-mode method with nonlinear time function approximation is employed for the solution of the system nonlinear eigenvalue equations. The amplitude-frequency relations for convergence with gridwork refinement, different boundary conditions, aspect ratios, lamination angles and number of plies are presented. The finite element results are compared with available approximate continuum solutions.

Observations of short large-amplitude magnetic structures at a quasi-parallel shock

Results of a detailed analysis of short large-amplitude magnetic structures (SLAMS) observed at an encounter of the quasi-parallel blow shock by the AMPTE UKS and IRM satellites are presented. Isolated SLAMS, surrounded by solar wind conditions, and embedded SLAMS, which lie within or form the boundary with regions of significant heating and deceleration, are identified. The duration, polarization, and other characteristics of SLAMS are all consistent with their growth directly out of the ULF wave field, including the common occurrence of an attached whistler as found in ULF shocklets. The plasma rest frame propagation speeds and two-spacecraft time delays for all cases show that the SLAMS attempt to propagate upstream against the oncoming flow, but are convected back downstream. The speeds and delays vary systematically with SLAMS amplitude in the way anticipated from nonlinear wave theory, as do their polarization features. Inter-SLAMS regions and boundary regions with solar wind contain hot deflected ions of lesser density than within the SLAMS.

The discovery of an extremely low amplitude Cepheid?

Extremely low amplitude periodic radial velocity variations are found for HR 7796 (F8 Ib), thought to be a non-Cepheid in (or near) the instability strip. Two and one-half complete cycles have been monitored over three observing runs. The period is found to be 11.874 +/- 0.02 days. Observations of the reference star HR 509 (G8 V) taken on the same nights show no periodicities and a scatter of just 20 m/s. A first-order approximation shows that HR 7796 does appear to follow the Cepheid period-luminosity relation. If HR 7796 is a Cepheid, it is the smallest amplitude Cepheid by more than an order of magnitude.

Three-dimensional boundary-layer instability and separation induced by small-amplitude streamwise vorticity in the upstream flow

We consider the effects of a small-amplitude, steady, streamwise vorticity field on the flow over an infinitely thin flat plate in an otherwise uniform stream. We show how the initially linear perturbation, ultimately leads to a small-amplitude but nonlinear cross flow far downstream from the leading edge. This motion is imposed on the boundary-layer flow and eventually causes the boundary layer to separate. The streamwise velocity profiles within the boundary layer become inflexional in localized spanwise regions just upstream of the separation point. The flow in these regions is therefore susceptible to rapidly growing inviscid instabilities.

Parametric instabilities of large amplitude Alfven waves with obliquely propagating sidebands

This paper presents a brief report on properties of the parametric decay and modulational, filamentation, and magnetoacoustic instabilities of a large amplitude, circularly polarized Alfven wave. We allow the daughter and sideband waves to propagate at an arbitrary angle to the background magnetic field so that the electrostatic and electromagnetic characteristics of these waves are coupled. We investigate the dependance of these instabilities on dispersion, plasma/beta, pump wave amplitude, and propagation angle. Analytical and numerical results are compared with numerical simulations to investigate the full nonlinear evolution of these instabilities.

Absolute ultrasonic displacement amplitude measurements with a submersible electrostatic acoustic transducer

An experimental technique for absolute measurement of ultrasonic wave particle displacement amplitudes in liquids is reported. The technique is capable of measurements over a frequency range of two decades with a sensitivity less than one angstrom. The technique utilizes a previously reported submersible electrostatic acoustic transducer (ESAT) featuring a conductive membrane stretched over a recessed electrode. An uncertainty analysis shows that the displacement amplitude of an ultrasonic plane wave incident on the ESAT can be experimentally determined to better than 2.3-4 percent, depending on frequency, in the frequency range of 0.5-15 MHz. Membranes with lower and more uniform areal densities can improve the accuracy and extend the operation to higher frequencies.

Strong-field cyclotron scattering. I - Scattering amplitudes and natural line width

The introduction of resonance line width into the QED cyclotron scattering amplitudes is considered. It is shown that the width arises from loop corrections to the electron propagator, which also bring about shifts in the Landau energy levels. A formalism is developed that allows the dressed electron propagator to be derived. It is shown that the states of Herold et al. (1982) and of Sokolov and Ternov (1968), which diagonalize the component of the magnetic moment operator parallel to the external magnetic field, are appropriate for calculation of the scattering amplitudes, whereas the states of Johnson and Lippmann (1949) are not. In addition, it is shown that the Breit-Wigner broadening approximation E tends to E - i(Gamma)/2 is consistent with the perturbation-theoretic order of the calculation, if the former basis states are chosen, but not the latter.

Parametric instabilities of finite-amplitude, circularly polarized Alfven waves in an anisotropic plasma

A class of parametric instabilities of finite-amplitude, circularly polarized Alfven waves in a plasma with pressure anisotropy is studied by application of the CGL equations. A linear perturbation analysis is used to find the dispersion relation governing the instabilities, which is a fifth-order polynomial and is solved numerically. A large-amplitude, circularly polarized wave is unstable with respect to decay into three waves: one sound-like wave and two side-band Alfven-like waves. It is found that, in addition to the decay instability, two new instabilities that are absent in the framework of the MHD equations can occur, depending on the plasma parameters.

Interval estimates for closure-phase and closure-amplitude imaging in radio astronomy

Interval estimates for closure-phase and closure-amplitude imaging that enable the reconstruction of a radioimage from results of approximate measurements are presented. If the intervals for the measured values are known, the precision of the result of the reconstruction cannot be solved by standard interval methods, because the phase value is based on a circle but not on a real line. If the phase theta (x bar) is measured with precision epsilon, so that the closure phase theta (x bar) + theta (y bar) - theta (x bar + y bar) is known with precision 3 epsilon, then from these measurements theta can be reconstructed with precision 6 epsilon. Similar estimates are given for closure amplitude.

Optimal binary phase and amplitude correlation filters for polarization-rotating spatial light modulators

We investigate the optimal designs of binary phase and amplitude filters (BPAFs) for the key correlation metrics of peak intensity, peak-to-correlation energy, SNR, and discrimination. These filters may be implemented on binary polarization-rotating spatial light modulators. We present simulation results comparing performance to conventional binary phase-only filters (BPOFs) and illustrating trade-offs between the different performance criteria in terms of the filter design parameter. We also extend the generalization to three-level phase and amplitude filters with a nonzero region of support and demonstrate that optimal three-level BPAFs can provide clearly superior performance to optimal three-level BPOFs.

Large-amplitude auroral electric fields measured with DE 1

A large fraction of the available electric field data from the plasma wave instrument (PWI) on the Dynamics Explorer (DE) 1 satellite has recently been searched for events with large-amplitude electric fields. The magnitude and distribution of these peak events as functions of altitude have been determined. The largest amplitudes were found between 1.4 and 2.5 RE and the probability of finding large electric fields was greatest in the range of 1.5 to 1.7 RE. However, when the measured electric field values are 'mapped' to the Earth's surface in order to account for the geometry of the geomagnetic field lines, then the mapped values always increase with increasing altitude. This radial dependence is considered to be evidence for magnetic field-aligned electric fields. The largest electric field that was detected with the DE 1 instrument had a magnitude exceeding 840 mV/m and was found at 1.45 R(E). This field appears to be associated with a low-frequency wave. At subauroral latitudes the average mapped electric field is nearly constant with altitude, as it should be where there are no magnetic field-aligned potential drops. Within auroral latitudes the average value of the mapped electric field increases as altitude increases. The largest gradients are found between 1.3 and 2 R(E).

Limiting vibration in systems with constant amplitude actuators through command preshaping

The basic concepts of command preshaping were taken and adapted to the framework of systems with constant amplitude (on-off) actuators. In this context, pulse sequences were developed which help to attenuate vibration in flexible systems with high robustness to errors in frequency identification. Sequences containing impulses of different magnitudes were approximated by sequences containing pulses of different durations. The effects of variation in pulse width on this approximation were examined. Sequences capable of minimizing loads induced in flexible systems during execution of commands were also investigated. The usefulness of these techniques in real-world situations was verified by application to a high fidelity simulation of the space shuttle. Results showed that constant amplitude preshaping techniques offer a substantial improvement in vibration reduction over both the standard and upgraded shuttle control methods and may be mission enabling for use of the shuttle with extremely massive payloads.

Amplitude of primeval fluctuations from cosmological mass density reconstructions

We use the POTENT reconstruction of the mass density field in the nearby universe to estimate the amplitude of the density fluctuation power spectrum for various cosmological models. We find that sigma(sub 8) Omega(sub m sup 0.6) = 1.3(sub -0.3 sup +0.4), almost independently of the power spectrum. This value agrees well with the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) normalization for the standard cold dark matter model, while alternative models predict an excessive amplitude compared with COBE. Flat, low Omega(sub m) models and tilted models with spectral index n less than 0.8 are particularly discordant.

Nonequilibrium, large-amplitude MHD fluctuations in the solar wind

Compressible MHD simulations in one dimension with three-dimensional vectors are used to investigate a number of processes relevant to problems in interplanetary physics. The simulations indicate that a large-amplitude nonequilibrium (e.g., linearly polarized) Alfvenic wave, which always starts with small relative fluctuations in the magnitude B of the magnetic field, typically evolves to flatten the magnetic profile in most regions. Under a wide variety of conditions B and the density rho become anticorrelated on average. If the mean magnetic field is allowed to decrease in time, the point where the transverse magnetic fluctuation amplitude delta B(sub T) is greater than the mean field B(sub 0) is not special, and large values of delta B(sub T)/B(sub 0) do not cause the compressive thermal energy to increase remarkably or the wave energy to dissipate at an unusually high rate. Nor does the 'backscatter' of the waves that occurs when the sound speed is less than the Alfven speed result, in itself, in substantial energy dissipation, but rather primarily in a phase change between the magnetic and velocity fields. For isolated wave packets the backscatter does not occur for any of the parameters examined; an initial radiation of acoustic waves away from the packet establishes a stable traveling structure. Thus these simulations, although greatly idealized compared to reality, suggest a picture in which the interplanetary fluctuations should have small deltaB and increasingly quasi-pressure balanced compressive fluctuations, as observed, and in which the dissipation and 'saturation' at delta B(sub T)/B(sub 0) approximately = 1 required by some theories of wave acceleration of the solar wind do not occur. The simulations also provide simple ways to understand the processes of nonlinear steepening and backscattering of Alfven waves and demonstrate the existence of previously unreported types of quasi-steady MHD states.

Tremendous outburst amplitude dwarf novae

For many years, observers have noted the existence of a number of tremendous outburst amplitude dwarf novae. We present a summary of the known observational parameters for these exceptional systems. They show outburst amplitudes of 6-10 mag, have rare outbursts (interoutburst times being months to decades), and only seem to exist in dwarf novae with short orbital periods. We calculate new accretion disk models which can reproduce their outburst behavior very well. It appears that these dwarf novae have low mass transfer rates at minimum, and the viscosity during quiescence is about 10 times smaller than for other dwarf novae. Their relation to SU UMa stars is discussed.

Spatial light modulators (SLMs) of proposed type provide independent control over both phase and amplitude of electromagnetic field of modulated light. Useful in optical processing of information in which it is essential to control complex amplitude as function of time and of position in correlation plane.
