Observation of the Jet Diffusion Wake Using Dijets in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Energetic quarks and gluons traversing a hot and dense quark-gluon plasma deposit energy and momentum into the medium before hadronizing to collimated sprays of particles, known as jets. This energy-momentum deposition is expected to produce medium responses, collectively known as jet wakes, with “diffusion wake” denoting a depletion of particles in the direction opposite to the propagating jet. The diffusion wake is studied by comparing dijet-hadron correlations measured in lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions. The analysis uses PbPb and pp data recorded at a nucleon-nucleon (NN) center-of-mass energy s NN = 5.02 TeV with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC. By exploring how the dijet-hadron correlation distributions differ for various pseudorapidity separations of the two jets in the dijet, the presence of a jet diffusion wake is firmly established. The diffusion wake signal has a significance greater than 5 standard deviations for charged particles in the transverse momentum range 1 < p T < 2 GeV . The measurements are compared with model predictions with and without jet wake effects, providing new insights into quark-gluon plasma properties and the formation of jet-induced wakes.

Modified coherence and the transverse extent of jets

We present a study of the transverse size of parton showers and their diminishing interaction with the medium in the high virtuality stage of jet evolution. We consider the process of a hard quark produced in deep inelastic scattering off a large nucleus. Single gluon radiation from this quark, in the absence of scattering, is rederived using wave packets. This allows for a derivation of the quantum uncertainty size of the hard quark, at the point of splitting. This uncertainty size is then incorporated within a Monte Carlo shower routine yielding transverse shower sizes noticeably larger than the classical antenna size of the shower. No clear relation is found between the full uncertainty size of the shower and the virtuality of the originating parton. The single gluon emission from the hard quark is then reanalyzed for the case of single rescattering off the remainder of the nucleus. A relation is derived between the jet transport coefficient $\hat{𝑞}$ and the gluon Transverse momentum-dependent parton distribution function (gTMDPDF). Solving this relation, for a simple case, clearly demonstrates the weakening of $\hat{𝑞}$ with the virtuality of the hard splitting parton.

Understanding baryon stopping at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider top energies

The nucleon exhibits a rich internal structure governed by quantum chromodynamics (QCD), where its electric charge arises from valence quarks, while its spin and mass emerge from complex interactions among valence quarks, sea (anti)quarks, and gluons. At the advent of QCD, an alternative hypothesis emerged suggesting, at high energies, the transport of a nucleon's baryon number could be traced by a nonperturbative configuration of gluon fields connecting its three valence quarks, forming a 𝑌-shaped topology known as the gluon junction. Recent measurements by the STAR experiment are compatible with this scenario. In light of these measurements, this study aims to explore the mechanisms of baryon transport in high-energy nuclear collisions using the pythia-8 framework, which incorporates a state-of-the-art hadronization model with advanced color flow (CF) and color reconnection (CR) mechanisms that mimic signatures of a baryon junction. Within this model setup, we investigate (i) the rapidity slope of the net-baryon distributions in photon-included processes (𝛾 + 𝑝) and (ii) baryon over charge transport in the isobaric (Ru + Ru and Zr + Zr) collisions. Our study highlights the importance of the CF and CR mechanisms in pythia-8, which play a crucial role in baryon transport. The results show that the CF and CR schemes significantly affect the isobaric baryon-to-charge ratio, leading to different predictions for baryon stopping and underscoring the need to account for CF and CR effects in comparisons with experimental measurements.

Measurement of the J/ψ photoproduction cross section over the full near-threshold kinematic region

Here, we report the total and differential cross sections for $J/\psi$ photoproduction with the large acceptance GlueX spectrometer for photon beam energies from the threshold at 8.2 GeV up to 11.44 GeV and over the full kinematic range of momentum transfer squared, $t$. Such coverage facilitates the extrapolation of the differential cross sections to the forward ($t = 0$) point beyond the physical region. The forward cross section is used by many theoretical models and plays an important role in understanding $J/\psi$ photoproduction and its relation to the $J/\psi$-proton interaction. These measurements of $J/\psi$ photoproduction near threshold are also crucial inputs to theoretical models that are used to study important aspects of the gluon structure of the proton, such as the gluon Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) of the proton, the mass radius of the proton, and the trace anomaly contribution to the proton mass. We observe possible structures in the total cross section energy dependence and find evidence for contributions beyond gluon exchange in the differential cross section close to threshold, both of which are consistent with contributions from open-charm intermediate states.

Transverse energy-energy correlators in the color-glass condensate at the electron-ion collider

We investigate the transverse energy-energy correlators (TEEC) in the small- x regime at the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). Focusing on the back-to-back production of electron-hadron pairs in both e p and e A collisions, we establish a factorization formula given in terms of the hard function, quark distributions, soft functions, and TEEC jet functions, where the gluon saturation effect is incorporated. Numerical results for TEEC in both e p and e A collisions are presented, together with the nuclear modification factor R A . Our analysis reveals that TEEC observables in deep inelastic scattering provide a valuable approach for probing gluon saturation phenomena. Our findings underscore the significance of measuring TEEC at the EIC, emphasizing its efficacy in advancing our understanding of gluon saturation and nuclear modifications in high-energy collisions. Probing the Gluonic Structure of the Deuteron with J / ψ Photoproduction in d + Au Ultraperipheral Collisions

Understanding gluon density distributions and how they are modified in nuclei are among the most important goals in nuclear physics. In recent years, diffractive vector meson production measured in ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at heavy-ion colliders has provided a new tool for probing the gluon density. In this Letter, we report the first measurement of J/psi photoproduction off the deuteron in UPCs at the center-of-mass energy root √S-NN = 200 GeV in d + Au collisions. The differential cross section as a function of momentum transfer -t is measured. In addition, data with a neutron tagged in the deuteron-going zero-degree calorimeter is investigated for the first time, which is found to be consistent with the expectation of incoherent diffractive scattering at low momentum transfer. Theoretical predictions based on the color glass condensate saturation model and the leading twist approximation nuclear shadowing model are compared with the data quantitatively. A better agreement with the saturation model has been observed. With the current measurement, the results are found to be directly sensitive to the gluon density distribution of the deuteron and the deuteron breakup process, which provides insights into the nuclear gluonic structure.

Back-to-Back Inclusive Dijets in Deep Inelastic Scattering at Small x : Complete NLO Results and Predictions

We compute the back-to-back dijet cross section in deep inelastic scattering at small x to next-to-leading order (NLO) in the color glass condensate effective field theory. Our result can be factorized into a convolution of the Weizsäcker-Williams gluon transverse-momentum-dependent distribution function (WW gluon TMD) with a universal soft factor and an NLO coefficient function. The soft factor includes both double and single logarithms in the ratio of the relative transverse momentum P ⊥ of the dijet pair to the dijet momentum imbalance q ⊥ ; its renormalization group (RG) evolution is resummed into the Sudakov factor. Likewise, the WW TMD obeys a nonlinear RG equation in x that is kinematically constrained to satisfy both the lifetime and rapidity ordering of the projectile. Exact analytical expressions are obtained for the NLO coefficient function of transversely and longitudinally polarized photons. Our results allow for the first quantitative separation of the dynamics of Sudakov suppression from that of gluon saturation. They can be extended to other final states and provide a framework for precision tests of novel QCD many-body dynamics at the Electron-Ion Collider. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for Narrow Trijet Resonances in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

The first search for singly produced narrow resonances decaying to three well-separated hadronic jets is presented. The search uses proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb − 1 at s = 13 TeV , collected at the CERN LHC. No significant deviations from the background predictions are observed between 1.75 and 9.00 TeV. The results provide the first mass limits on a right-handed boson Z R decaying to three gluons and on an excited quark decaying via a vector boson to three quarks, as well as updated limits on a Kaluza-Klein gluon decaying via a radion to three gluons. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Precision measurement of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry for dijet production at intermediate pseudorapidity in polarized 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV

The STAR Collaboration reports precise measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, 𝐴 𝐿⁢𝐿 , for dijet production with at least one jet at intermediate pseudorapidity 0.8 < 𝜂 jet < 1.8 in polarized proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV. This study explores partons scattered with a longitudinal momentum fraction (𝑥) from 0.01 to 0.5, which are predominantly characterized by interactions between high-𝑥 valence quarks and low-𝑥 gluons. The results are in good agreement with previous measurements at 200 GeV with improved precision and are found to be consistent with the predictions of global analyses that find the gluon polarization to be positive. In contrast, the negative gluon polarization solution from the JAM Collaboration is found to be strongly disfavored.

Experimental scheme for polarizing boron nuclei

Unraveling the internal structure of hadrons and nuclei in terms of the quarks and gluons of quantum chromodynamics is a central focus of current nuclear physics research. Directly observing gluonic states in the nucleus would be groundbreaking and is an objective of the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). Over 30 years ago, Jaffe and Manohar [R. L. Jaffe and A. Manohar, Phys. Lett. B 223 , 218 (1989)] identified a new double-helicity flip structure function, directly sensitive to exotic gluons. They pointed out that this could be measured in inclusive high-energy electron scattering from a transversely polarized nuclear target with spin 𝐼 ≥ 1. Here, in this work, we identify the spin-3 nucleus boron-10 as a particularly interesting system to search for exotic gluons. Leveraging technical advances in atomic physics over the past decade, we outline an experimental scheme to directly optically pump a beam of stable boron atoms to polarize the nuclear spin. Technical challenges to realize a spin-polarized beam of boron-10 in the EIC are discussed. The proposed scheme will also polarize the 11 B nucleus, which could significantly enhance the proton-boron fusion cross section.

On interpretation of fluctuations of conserved charges at high T

Abstract Fluctuations of conserved charges calculated on the lattice which can be measured experimentally, are well reproduced by a hadron resonanse gas model at temperatures below$$T_{ch} \sim 155$$ T ch ∼ 155 MeV and radically deviate from the hadron resonance gas predictions above the chiral restoration crossover. This behaviour is typically interpreted as an indication of deconfinement in the quark-gluon plasma regime. We present an argument that this interpretation may be too simple. The argument is based on the scaling of quantities with the number of colors: demonstration of deconfinement and QGP requires observable that is sensitive to$$\sim N_c^2$$ ∼ N c 2 gluons while the conserved charges are sensitive only to quarks and above$$T_{ch}$$ T ch scale as$$N_c^1$$ N c 1 . The latter scaling is consistent with the existence of an intermediate regime characterized by restored chiral symmetry and by approximate chiral spin symmetry which is a symmetry of confining interaction. In this regime the energy density, pressure and entropy density scale as$$N_c^1$$ N c 1 . In the large$$N_c$$ N c limit this regime might become a distinct phase separated from the hadron gas and from QGP by phase transitions. A natural observable that associates with deconfinement and is directly sensitive to deconfined$$N_c^2-1$$ N c 2 - 1 gluons is the Polyakov loop; in the$$N_c=3$$ N c = 3 world it remains very close to 0 at temperatures well above chiral crossover, reaches the value$$\sim 0.5$$ ∼ 0.5 around$$\sim 3T_{ch}$$ ∼ 3 T ch and the value close to 1 at temperatures$$\sim 1$$ ∼ 1 GeV.

Large $$N_c$$ QCD phase diagram at $$\mu _B=0$$

Abstract Lattice studies suggest that at zero baryon chemical potential and increasing temperature there are three characteristic regimes in QCD that are connected by smooth analytical crossovers: a hadron gas regime at$$T < T_{ch}\sim 155$$ T < T ch ∼ 155 MeV, an intermediate regime, called stringy fluid, at$$T_{ch}< T < \sim 3 T_{ch}$$ T ch < T < ∼ 3 T ch , and a quark-gluon plasma regime at higher temperatures. These regimes have been interpreted to reflect different approximate symmetries and effective degrees of freedom. In the hadron gas the effective degrees of freedom are hadrons and the approximate chiral symmetry of QCD is spontaneously broken. The intermediate regime has been interpreted as lacking spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking along with the emergence of new approximate symmetry, chiral spin symmetry, that is not a symmetry of the Dirac Lagrangian, but is a symmetry of the confining part of the QCD Lagrangian. While the high temperature regime is the usual quark-gluon plasma which is often considered to reflect “deconfinement” in some way. This paper explores the behavior of these regimes of QCD as the number of colors in the theory,$$N_c$$ N c , gets large. In the large$$N_c$$ N c limit the theory is center-symmetric and notions of confinement and deconfinement are unambiguous. The energy density is$$\mathcal{O}(N_c^0)$$ O ( N c 0 ) in the meson gas,$${{\mathcal {O}}}(N_c^1)$$ O ( N c 1 ) in the intermediate regime and$${{\mathcal {O}}}(N_c^2)$$ O ( N c 2 ) in the quark-gluon plasma regime. In the large$$N_c$$ N c limit these regimes may become distinct phases separated by first order phase transitions. The intermediate phase has the peculiar feature that glueballs should exist and have properties that are unchanged from what is seen in the vacuum (up to$$1/N_c $$ 1 / N c corrections), while the ordinary dilute gas of mesons with broken chiral symmetry disappears and approximate chiral spin symmetry should emerge.

Constraints on Higgs boson properties using $WW^*(→eνμν)jj$ production in 36.1fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

This article presents the results of two studies of Higgs boson properties using the WW * (→eνμν)jj final state, based on a dataset corresponding to 36.1fb -1 of $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV proton–proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The first study targets Higgs boson production via gluon–gluon fusion and constrains the CP properties of the effective Higgs–gluon interaction. Using angular distributions and the overall rate, a value of tan(α)=0.0±0.4(stat.)±0.3(syst.) is obtained for the tangent of the mixing angle for CP-even and CP-odd contributions. The second study exploits the vector-boson fusion production mechanism to probe the Higgs boson couplings to longitudinally and transversely polarised W and Z bosons in both the production and the decay of the Higgs boson; these couplings have not been directly constrained previously. The polarisation-dependent coupling-strength scale factors are defined as the ratios of the measured polarisation-dependent coupling strengths to those predicted by the Standard Model, and are determined using rate and kinematic information to be a L =0.91$^{+0.10}_{-0.18}$(stat.)$^{+0.09}_{-0.17}$(syst.) and a T =1.2±0.4(stat.)$^{+0.2}_{-0.3}$(syst.). These coupling strengths are translated into pseudo-observables, resulting in κ VV =0.91$^{+0.10}_{-0.18}$(stat.)$^{+0.09}_{-0.17}$(syst.) and ϵ VV =0.13$^{+0.28}_{-0.20}$ (stat.)$^{+0.08}_{-0.10}$(syst.). All results are consistent with the Standard Model predictions.

Search for baryon junctions in e+A collisions at the electron ion collider

Constituent quarks in a nucleon are the essential elements in the standard “quark model” associated with the electric charge, spin, mass, and baryon number of a nucleon. Quantum chromodynamics (QCD) describes nucleon as a composite object containing current quarks (valence quarks and sea (anti-)quarks) and gluons. These subatomic elements and their interactions are known to contribute in complex ways to the overall nucleon spin and mass. In the early development of QCD theory in the 1970s, an alternative hypothesis postulated that the baryon number might manifest itself through a non-perturbative configuration of gluon fields forming a Y-shaped topology known as the gluon junction. In this work, we propose to test such hypothesis by measuring (i) the Regge intercept of the net-baryon distributions for e+(p)Au collisions, (ii) baryon and charge transport in the isobaric ratio between e+Ru and e+Zr collisions, and (iii) target flavor dependence of proton and antiproton yields at large rapidity, transported from the hydrogen and deuterium targets in e+p(d) collisions. Our study indicates that these measurements at the EIC can help determine what carries the baryon number.

Development of systematic uncertainty-aware neural network trainings for binned-likelihood analyses at the LHC

We propose a neural network training method capable of accounting for the effects of systematic variations of the data model in the training process and describe its extension towards neural network multiclass classification. The procedure is evaluated on the realistic case of the measurement of Higgs boson production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion in the τ τ decay channel at the CMS experiment. The neural network output functions are used to infer the signal strengths for inclusive production of Higgs bosons as well as for their production via gluon fusion and vector boson fusion. We observe improvements of 12 and 16% in the uncertainty in the signal strengths for gluon and vector-boson fusion, respectively, compared with a conventional neural network training based on cross-entropy.

Longitudinal double-spin asymmetries of inclusive jet and dijet production at STAR

The STAR experiment probes the gluon helicity distribution \Delta g(x, Q^2) Δ g ( x , Q 2 ) using collisions of longitudinally polarized protons at \sqrt{s} = 200 s = 200 ~GeV and \sqrt{s} = 510 s = 510 ~GeV. \Delta g(x, Q^2) Δ g ( x , Q 2 ) can be accessed through the double-spin asymmetries A_{LL} A L L in gluon-dominated hard scattering processes via inclusive jet and dijet production. This proceedings report on recent measurements of A_{LL} A L L for inclusive jets and dijets in the mid-pseudorapidity ( |\eta| < 1 | η | < 1 ) and dijets in the intermediate pseudrapidity ( -0.8 < \eta < 1.8 − 0.8 < η < 1.8 ) regions. These measurements provide sensitivity to \Delta g(x, Q^2) Δ g ( x , Q 2 ) for gluon momentum fractions x x from \simeq 0.5 ≃ 0.5 down to \simeq 0.004 ≃ 0.004 . The results are in good agreement with previous STAR measurements and recent theoretical evaluations of prior world data.

Entanglement, partial set of measurements, and diagonality of the density matrix in the parton model

To study quantum properties of the hadron wavefunction at small x, we derived the reduced density matrix for soft gluons in the CGC framework. We explicitly showed that the reduced density matrix is not diagonal in the particle number basis. The off-diagonal components are usually ignored in the conventional parton model. We thus defined the density matrix of ignorance by keeping only the part of the reduced density matrix which can be probed in a limited set of experimental measurements. We calculated Von Neumann entropy for both the reduced and ignorance density matrices. The entropy of ignorance is always greater than the entanglement entropy (computed drom the reduced density matrix) of gluons. Finally, we showed that the CGC reduced density matrix for soft gluons can be diagonalized in a thermal basis with Boltzmann weights suggesting thermalization of new quasi-particle states which we dubbed entangolons.

Letter of Intent for a Drell-Yan experiment with a polarized proton target

It is well known that the proton is a spin-1/2 particle, but how the constituents (quarks and gluons) assemble to this quantized spin is still a mystery. There is a worldwide effort to map out the individual contributions to the proton spin. It is established that the quark spins contribute around 30%, while the gluon intrinsic angular momentum is still under active investigation at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Fully resolving the proton spin puzzle requires information on the orbital angular momentum (OAM) of both quarks and gluons. Recent studies have shown that the so-called transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs) can inform us about the OAM of the partons.
