Fracture Intersections under Stress: Laboratory Data and Code [Data set]

The connectivity of natural and induced fractures governs the injection and withdrawal of fluids from subsurface reservoirs. Connectivity depends on intersections that control how fluids mix and move through the entire system. Here, we present data sets from 3D X-ray microscopy measurements of simple fracture networks under stress. 3D printing was used to create prismatic blocks that formed fracture networks composed of 2 orthogonal fractures. The network orientation was either "x" or "+" relative to an applied vertical stress. 3D data sets were collected for normal loads of 25, 100 and 200 Newtons for samples with fracture surfaces with either correlated or uncorrelated asperity distributions. The file contains data from the 12 samples analyzed along with an example code used to extract the intersection geometry. Additional experimental details can be found in the manuscript "Geologic Stress Modulates Fluid Mixing at Fracture Intersections" (10.1038/s43247-026-03525-9)and supplemental information to appear in Communications Earth & Environment in 2026.

HYBRD (High Resolution HYBrid Regional Downscaling) Model: Input data and Code

The HYBRD (HYBrid Regional Downscaling) model is a high-resolution urban land downscaling model that can be used to downscale intermediate urban land use and land cover (LULC) products into a high-resolution (30-meters). HYBRD uses a sequential hybrid process, combining statistical models with cellular-automata-based spatial algorithms. This repository contains all the necessary model code and inputs needed to successfully run HYBRD for Los Angeles, California. The repo also contains example outputs of each model step, except the final simulated raster outputs. Examples of simulated raster outputs for multiple scenarios for Los Angeles are available at DOI: 10.57931/2575233. Please refer to Related Works below.

Xanthos-Lake Model Source Code

This repository contains the source code for Xanthos-Lake, a lake-modeling extension of the Xanthos framework that introduces a coupled lake component comprising the Xanthos-Lake Snow and Ice Model (xLSIM) and the Xanthos-Lake Water Balance Model (xLWBM). xLSIM is a basin-aware machine-learning model for lake snow, ice, and thermal conditions. It predicts monthly lake ice thickness, snow depth, snow-cover fraction, mixing-layer temperature, and lake ice fraction from meteorological forcing and lake surface-area information. It uses sequence-based deep-learning architectures, including Transformer and hybrid Long Short-Term Memory–Transformer (LSTM–Transformer) models, together with seasonal encoding, multi-lake learning, physical masking, and basin-level cryospheric and non-cryospheric classification. The training workflow uses Ray for scalable execution and includes optional Ray Tune hyperparameter optimization. Model predictions, observations, diagnostics, and feature-importance outputs are written in NetCDF. xLWBM is the water-balance component of the new lake framework. It simulates monthly lake storage, surface area, evaporation, inflow, outflow, and lake–groundwater exchange. It combines physical water-balance equations with calibrated bathymetric relationships, weir-based outlet flow, modified Penman open-water evaporation, groundwater head relaxation, Penman–Monteith snow and ice sublimation, and snow, ice, and thermal conditions supplied by xLSIM. The model calibrates lake parameters against satellite-derived surface-area data, using evaporation-based calibration where surface-area data are unavailable, and supports small, medium, and large lake classes. For large lakes, xLWBM is integrated with the managed-routing workflow so that lake storage and outflow interact directly with downstream river routing and reservoir operations. Together, xLSIM and xLWBM provide Xanthos with a coupled lake-modeling capability. xLSIM supplies the snow, ice, and thermal conditions that affect lake evaporation and snow- and ice-related water exchanges, while xLWBM translates those conditions into dynamic lake storage, surface area, evaporation, and discharge. In return, xLWBM supplies evolving lake surface area to xLSIM. This coupling enables Xanthos to represent lakes as active hydrologic components within basin-scale water-availability and routing simulations.

Data and code from: Multivariate bayesian regression model for predicting disposed ash composition at U.S. coal fired power stations

This dataset contains the code and data files needed for implementation of a Multivariate Bayesian Regression model, described in Jin et al. (2025), for the historical prediction of the chemical composition of disposed coal ash at U.S. coal fired power plants as a function of annualized coal purchase data. The integrated coal supply data file (CoalSupplyDataset.csv) represents a compilation of monthly fuel purchase records for the period 1973-2022 at major U.S. power stations. These records were obtained from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The CSV file also contains, for each coal purchase record, the coal region of the mine as defined by the U.S. Geological Survey. Data entry errors and data gaps in the EIA records were corrected as described in Jin et al. This CSV file represents the integrated coal supply data after corrections were made. The model structure and fitting parameters are encoded in pickle file format (Bayesian.pkl). The model was developed with the coal supply data and coal ash composition data, apportioned according to the Stratified Shuffle Split for training and testing subsets. The model was built using Python and the PyMC library. Reference Publication: Jin, Z.; Huang, J.; Hower, J.C.; Hsu-Kim, H.(2025). Study of the heat pipe vapor flow using the MOOSE application Sockeye and the CFD code Nek5000

Heat pipes are efficient heat transfer devices used in various applications, including nuclear microreactors. Heat pipe-cooled microreactors offer advantages in size and cost, which can significantly accelerate their deployment and adoption. Developing accurate models of heat pipes is crucial for a heat pipe-cooled microreactor design and operation. In this work a verification and validation of the heat pipe application Sockeye is presented. Results are compared against RANS simulations, performed with the code Nek5000, and the SPHERE experiment, conducted at INL.

Detailed Characterization of CZT Detector Response for Improved Coded-Aperture Imaging Performance

Gamma-ray imaging is a powerful method for locating and quantifying sources of radiation. The coded-aperture technique demonstrates superior angular resolution in comparison to other methods (e.g., Compton reconstruction). In this method, a mask constructed of highly attenuating material encodes the scene as a shadow pattern on a position-sensitive detector; this pattern can then be used to recreate the origin(s) of incident radiation. This is typically done through convolution of the mask and shadow patterns. Iterative methods which attempt to reconstruct the observed shadow pattern using a weighted combination of simulated patterns may also be employed. In either case, errors in event position reconstruction due to detector imperfections alter the shadow pattern and will therefore degrade system performance and may introduce imaging artifacts. These effects can be mitigated with a detailed understanding of such errors – allowing for the generation of representative simulations that include the errors and/or correction of raw imager data to remove the errors. We present a calibration process for a commercially available cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) gamma imager which provides a comprehensive characterization of the spatial and energy dependence of event reconstruction. By illuminating a mask featuring a regular grid of pinholes with a calibration source, the localized response of the detector can be measured with fine granularity. These local responses are combined to generate a full detector response map which can be used to distort simulations in a manner that is representative of the observed detector data. Details of the calibration procedure and an assessment of the impact of its end products on the performance of iterative imaging methods will be presented.

Apparatuses and methods for optical code-delay reflectometry (OcoDR)

Apparatuses and methods for optical code-delay reflectometry (OCoDR) are disclosed. An apparatus includes a modulator, a receiver, and control circuitry. The modulator is configured to receive incident electromagnetic (EM) radiation at a substantially fixed frequency generated by one or more EM radiation sources. The incident EM radiation includes continuous-wave EM radiation. The modulator is configured to impart a sequence onto an amplitude, a phase, or both of the incident EM radiation to generate modulated EM radiation. The modulated EM radiation includes continuous-wave EM radiation. The receiver is configured to receive reference EM radiation. The receiver is also configured to receive reflected EM radiation from an optical system responsive to the modulated EM radiation and generate interfered EM radiation responsive to the reference EM radiation and the reflected EM radiation. The receiver is further configured to generate a continuous interferogram responsive to the interfered EM radiation.

Whole-scene, one-sided backscatter x-ray imaging with coded apertures

X-ray radiography can be an important diagnostic for emergency response, providing timely diagnostic information about a suspect object. However, there are situations where similar information would be better obtained with a one-sided imaging technique. X-ray backscatter imaging is a proven technology that could provide such information, but current implementations have drawbacks that render it unsuitable for emergency response. We are exploring the use of coded-aperture imaging to create one-sided images, targeting a key benefit: implementation requiring minimal additional resources, bypassing logistics issues. We present results demonstrating the feasibility of this approach.

Interim Development of new Class B Code Case with Variable Design Lifetime and enhanced design rules to guard against cyclic structural failure mode

This report summarizes updates on the ongoing development of the new American Society of Mechanical Engineers Section III, Division 5, Class B rules to address the potential failure modes of Class B components. An initial design-by-analysis approach and supporting design rules are presented. The elastic-perfectly plastic (EPP) analysis approach has been adopted for primary stress limit and ratcheting check to prevent the component failure against the structural failure mode against primary load and strain accumulation due to cyclic loads. The creep-fatigue damage assessment uses explicitly defined elastic follow-up calculated from the stress concentration region of given component. Damage fraction calculation uses a novel coupled approach to capture the influence of the elastic follow-up and provide adequate conservatism for Class B components. The proposed Class B rules does not use the stress classification approach and uses the combined loads to assess component.
