The World Magnetic Survey

The mathematical and graphical description of the earth's main field has been, and is, a "data limited" problem. The World Magnetic Survey (WMS) is an endeavor to minimize this limitation by rapidly and comprehensively blanketing the earth with magnetic field measurements. Satellite surveys, which will play a key role in the W MS, are the principal topic of this paper. Existing magnetic field descriptions, the expected results from new surveys, and the methods of obtaining these results with the POGO satellite are emphasized. It is anticipated on the basis of extrapolation from Vanguard 3 results and other considerations that a factor of 10 improvement will be obtained. This means that the average errors of 1 to 3 percent now present in field charts and spherical harmonic descriptions should be reduced to 0.1 to 0.3 percent as a result of the survey.

A theoretical model for determining turbine flowmeter sensitivity

Analytical model of turbine-type flowmeter guides in the selection of valid extrapolation of available calibration data. An expression for flowmeter performance is developed to include the effects of fluid friction, bearing drag, and magnetic drag upon helical rotor design.

Log-normal model for microbial survival in heat sterilization

An analytical model is developed for the survival times of organisms in heat sterilization in which the probability of inactivation as a function of exposure time is log-normally distributed. Experimental data is examined relative to this model and it is concluded that the model is valid except during the initial period of heating when an additional interaction between the organisms and their surrounding medium appears to be present. At long heating times, the log-normal model appears more accurate for extrapolating to low survival probabilities than the usual logarithmic survivor curves and is generally more conservative.

Study reveals effect of aluminum on saturation moment of Fe-Ni alloys

Study of saturation magnetization, important in the investigation of the electronic structure of alloys, reveals the effect of aluminum on the saturation moments of iron-nickel alloys. The saturation magnetizations were extrapolated to the absolute zero of temperature for calculating average atomic moments.
