Biofouling and Corrosion Study for a Novel Linear Guided Wave Energy Converter (Post Access Report)

The overall objective of this project was to examine the reliability and performance of antibiofouling coatings used for a wave energy converter (WEC) developed by E-Wave Technologies. The particular coatings were selected for their low toxicity and potential compatibility with aquaculture. The aim of this work was to 1) test coating solutions to prevent biofouling growth and saltwater corrosion on the static (paddle and attachment frame surface) components of the WEC that are submerged, 2) determine adhesion of the coatings to system components, and 3) assess the ease and effectiveness of biofouling cleaning to insure long term performance of the system. An analysis of commercial coatings was performed using methods to examine the prevention of biofouling and coating adhesion properties on two key materials of the WEC, which were 316L low carbon marine grade stainless steel (SS) and Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (PE). Three marine antifouling paints were selected based on their unique properties to test how different paint styles perform on different materials. The selected paints were ePaint Ecominder self-polishing paint with Zinc Omadine for slime control, Pettit ECO HRT Copper-Free ablative antifouling with Econea biocide, and Intersleek 1100SR foul release. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) prepared PE and SS substrates coated with the three paints and compared the performance against uncoated substrates when submerged in raw seawater for 3-, 6-, and 9-month (m) time periods. Results in adhesion testing indicated that Pettit and ePaint materials clearly bonded strongly to SS, but did not bond comparably well to PE. It was noted during adhesion testing that the Intersleek surfaces were especially difficult to test as the paint highly resists bonding to the epoxy adhesives used with the adherence testing platform. The wear rate of the coatings was not measured under this study; however, based on adhesion testing, coatings in the sliding regions of the Ewave device are expected to wear rapidly. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) evaluated the adhesion of three different paints to PE and SS substrates which were exposed to a marine environment for time intervals of 0, 3, 6, and 9 months. From qualitative visual analysis of the 3 in2 coupons when pulled from the tank, the 3 in2 coupons generally only appeared to have biofouling consisting of filamentous algae or diatoms, which all have relatively low mass and can be easily wiped from the surface of coupons. Qualitative visual analysis indicated that ECO HRT and Unpainted were consistently worse than Intersleek and Ecominder at all time points. Results provide insight to aid with down-selection of commercial coatings under static conditions to support reliability of the WEC and potential maintenance schedules. This investigation was conducted using small coupon samples suspended in seawater and the development of testing rigs for dynamic component level testing is needed for future work. In addition, the potential toxicity of these commercial coatings on aquaculture has not been determined by this study. One recommendation is to conduct toxicity investigations at the Environmental Toxicity Laboratory at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Xyce™ Parallel Electronic Simulator Users’ Guide, Version 7.10

This manual describes the use of the Xyce Parallel Electronic Simulator. Xyce has been designed as a SPICE-compatible, high-performance analog circuit simulator, and has been written to support the simulation needs of the Sandia National Laboratories electrical designers. This development has focused on improving capability over the current state-of-the-art in the following areas: • Capability to solve extremely large circuit problems by supporting large-scale parallel computing platforms (up to thousands of processors). This includes support for most popular parallel and serial computers. • A differential-algebraic-equation (DAE) formulation, which better isolates the device model package from solver algorithms. This allows one to develop new types of analysis without requiring the implementation of analysis-specific device models. • Device models that are specifically tailored to meet Sandia’s needs, including some radiation-aware devices (for Sandia users only). • Object-oriented code design and implementation using modern coding practices. Xyce is a parallel code in the most general sense of the phrase — a message passing parallel implementation — which allows it to run efficiently a wide range of computing platforms. These include serial, shared-memory and distributed-memory parallel platforms. Attention has been paid to the specific nature of circuit-simulation problems to ensure that optimal parallel efficiency is achieved as the number of processors grows.

Machine learning guided selection of broad-spectrum epitope-specific functional antibodies for "Disease X"

Our project established and demonstrated a transfer learning framework that enables prediction of antibody–antigen interactions across related viruses. The approach focused on three major activities: 1. Conserved region and epitope identification – We compared viral protein structures and sequences to identify shared receptor-binding domains and neutralizing epitope regions across variants and related viruses. These conserved features formed the foundation for discovering broadly functional antibodies. 2. Machine learning model development – We built neural network–based models that integrate epitope features with antibody sequence information. Instead of relying solely on structural or physical properties, the models learned transferable patterns that describe antibody binding potential across different viral families. 3. Transfer learning and validation – Using SARS-CoV-2 and Ebola as source systems, we successfully transferred learned epitope features to predict antibody interactions for SARS CoV-1 and Marburg virus. Iterative cycles of dataset generation, retraining, and evaluation improved generalization and predictive power, ensuring the framework can adapt to new threats.

The Viskores User's Guide (V.1.0)

High-performance computing relies on ever finer threading. Advances in processor technology include ever greater numbers of cores, hyperthreading, accelerators with integrated blocks of cores, and special vectorized instructions, all of which require more software parallelism to achieve peak performance. Traditional visualization solutions cannot support this extreme level of concurrency. Extreme scale systems require a new programming model and a fundamental change in how we design algorithms. To address these issues we created Viskores: the visualization toolkit for multi-/many-core architectures. Viskores supports a number of algorithms and the ability to design further algorithms through a top-down design with an emphasis on extreme parallelism. Viskores also provides support for finding and building links across topologies, making it possible to perform operations that determine manifold surfaces, interpolate generated values, and find adjacencies. Although Viskores provides a simplified high-level interface for programming, its template-based code removes the overhead of abstraction.

Modal Analysis and Testing of a Cantilever Beam: Results and Guide

This report discusses modal analysis and testing of a cantilever beam including an introduction to modal testing, simulation, analysis, and a comparison of results. An accompanying presentation can be found from the LLNL CASIS website. Modal testing and analysis are essential for characterizing the response of a structure during vibration environments. Determining natural frequencies and mode shapes helps determine whether resonances will be reached during operations and if so, how the structure will respond and how the response can be tuned. The goal of this work is to convey the basics of modal testing and analysis through a simple project. This can be applied later to more complex, applicable structures. This includes a variety of work including data collection, finite element analysis and data processing. For this project a cantilever beam was chosen because it is a simple, well-characterized structure.
