Potential Solutions to Demand Growth in Virginia: Options for Demand Flexibility [Slides]

This slide deck report presents a literature review on virtual power plants (VPPs) and a demand flexibility analysis for the state of Virginia as part of DOE's State Energy Program (SEP) technical assistance work. The literature review describes key concepts, examples, participation models, and other issues for VPPs, and the analysis section presents a state-specific demand flexibility analysis estimating the technical potential for demand response from various sectors and end-uses. These materials are meant to inform and support VA's ability to shepherd ongoing dialogue and meet energy needs in the midst of strong load growth.

Hot Water Recirculation Systems: Designing for Success [Slides]

This presentation will focus on on-demand hot water recirculation systems and how they contribute to energy and water conservation in residential buildings. This work illustrates best practices for designing, installing, and operating these systems, drawing from research and field testing to provide practical recommendations. The ultimate goal is to reduce wait times for hot water, comply with current energy codes, and lower both energy use and greenhouse gas emissions, while improving user satisfaction. In the upcoming slides, we'll dive into case studies and explore the latest technological advancements that help achieve these objectives.

Advanced Transmission Technologies (ATTs) Supplier Cohort Workshops Cohort Summary [Slides]

This Summary slide deck summarizes the key outcomes of the Advanced Transmission Technologies (ATTs) supplier cohort, part of Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL) Technical Assistance for Digital Assurance (TADA) program. The program aimed to strengthen grid resilience through cybersecurity controls, supply-chain security, and Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) for advanced transmission technologies. The cohort brought together vendors representing the full range of Grid-Enhancing Technologies (GETs), including providers of Dynamic Line Ratings (DLR), Advanced Power Flow Control (APFC), Transmission Topology Optimization (TTO), and High-Performance Conductors (HPCs). Discussions focused on institutional, integration, and operational barriers limiting GET adoption; cybersecurity risks at EMS/SCADA, cloud, and network integration points; and supply-chain transparency issues such as semiconductor dependence and SBOM/HBOM expectations. Participants also addressed operator trust, human-in-the-loop requirements, and challenges with utility adoption, while exploring how CIE can support secure deployment of GETs. This deck represents a consolidated summary of challenges and risks identified by vendors, cross-cutting themes and technology-specific insights from three cohort workshops, and actionable mitigations to guide utilities, vendors, and the Department of Energy in advancing secure, trusted deployment of GETs.

Deformation of Polycrystalline MgO Up to 8.3 GPa and 1270 K: Microstructures, Dominant Slip-Systems, and Transition to Grain Boundary Sliding

Ferropericlase is the second most abundant mineral in the Earth’s lower mantle and its mechanical properties have a strong influence on the rheology of this region. Here, we deform polycrystalline MgO, the magnesium end-member of ferropericlase, at conditions ranging from 1.6 to 8.3 GPa and 875–1,270 K. We analyse the flow laws and microstructures of the recovered samples using electron microscopy and compare our observations with predictions from the literature. We identify a first mechanism for samples deformed at 1,270 K, attributed to a regime controlled by grain boundary sliding accommodated by diffusion, and characterized by a small grain size, an absence of texture, and no intracrystalline deformation. At 1,070 K and below, the deformation regime is controlled by dislocations. The samples show a more homogeneous grain size distribution, significant texture, and intracrystalline strains. In this regime, deformation is controlled by the ⟨110⟩{110} slip system and a combined ⟨110⟩{110} and ⟨110⟩{100} slip, depending on pressure and temperature. Based on these results, we propose an updated deformation map for polycrystalline MgO at mantle conditions. The implications for ferropericlase and seismic observations in the Earth’s lower mantle are discussed.

Power Generation Enhancement through Latching Control for a Sliding Magnet-Based Wave Energy Converter

A Surface-Riding Wave Energy Converter (SR-WEC) featuring a sliding magnet inside a pitching cylindrical hull is investigated as an easily deployable small power device to support small-scale marine operations. This study extends the earlier development of the system by authors to enhance power performance through the application of end spring and latching control. The inclusion of springs at the tube’s end enhances the magnet release and travel speeds as well as the average power output compared to systems without them. Further improvement of power output can also be achieved by employing optimal latching control. We introduced constant-angle and variable-angle unlatching strategies to determine optimal parameters in combination with passive and reactive power take-off (PTO) controls to assess their effectiveness. The optimized latching control and end spring can increase 60–80% more power output compared with the case without them under certain PTO damping. Additionally, we discussed the effects of limiting peak powers and associated energy leaks with latching.

Bubble Distribution in Fused Obsidian and Slide Glass: Research Report - 12

In this report we obtain further data about the distribution of bubbles in glass. It gives the results obtained from the microscopic study of obsidian samples heated with an oxyacetylene torch and from powdered microscopic slide glass re-fused in an electric oven. This report continues our earlier study of the distributions: Badri Aghassi, 1961, B.U. Tektite Project, Research Report No. 11.

Slide rule-type color chart predicts reproduced photo tones

Slide rule-type color chart determines the final reproduced gray tones in the production of briefing charts that are photographed in black and white. The chart shows both the color by drafting paint manufacturers name and mixture number, and the gray tone resulting from black and white photographic reproduction.
