Hydrogen bonding to the formate ligand: Structural characterization of 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine zinc formate·H 2 O

Here, two polymorphs of the 2,2’:6’,2”-terpyridine zinc formate compound (terpy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 •H 2 O have been structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction. In each case, the formate ligands coordinate via a K 1 -monodentate coordination mode and participate in hydrogen bonding interactions with water molecules. Despite this similarity, however, the polymorphs exhibit different hydrogen bonding motifs. Specifically, while one polymorph forms chains in which water molecules link adjacent (terpy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 molecules, the other polymorph consists of discrete tetranuclear [(terpy)Zn(O 2 CH) 2 •H 2 O] 4 moieties.

Flux-Assisted Boron Chalcogen Mixture (BCM) Method for Synthesizing Mixed Chalcogenide Semiconductors (AkRE 2 Si 2 Se x S 8– x and CaRE 2 Si 2 Se 8 ) ( Ak = Ca and Sr; RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm): Investigation of Their Magnetic and Optical Properties

We report a detailed structural analysis of a series of ten quaternary rare-earth-containing seleno-thiosilicates AkRE 2 Si 2 Se x S 8-x and selenosilicates, CaRE 2 Si 2 Se 8 (Ak = Ca and Sr; RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm). Single crystals were obtained by using the flux-assisted boron chalcogen mixture (BCM) method and single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine their structures. All members of the AkRE 2 Si 2 Se x S 8-x and CaRE 2 Si 2 Se 8 series crystallize in the space group R$\bar{3}$c (space group number 167) of the trigonal crystal system. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a strong preference for Se/S atoms to occupy one vs. the other of the two available sites. Polycrystalline samples were used for magnetic susceptibility and UV–visible diffuse reflectance measurements. Magnetic measurements show that CaCe₂Si₂Se₁.₇₃S₆.₂₇ and CaNd₂Si₂Se₂.₅S₅.₅ are paramagnetic with negative Weiss constants (θ = –60.1 and –26.2). Diffuse reflectance analysis gives optical band gaps of 2.7(1) eV (CaLa₂Si₂Se₂.₃₈S₅.₆₂), 2.2(1) eV (CaCe₂Si₂Se₁.₇₃S₆.₂₇), 2.5(1) eV (CaNd₂Si₂Se₂.₅S₅.₅), and 2.0(1) eV (CaCe₂Si₂Se₈), consistent with density functional theory calculations. By partially or fully replacing S sites with Se it was possible to achieve band gap tuning. Photoluminescence behavior was also investigated for CaCe 2 Si 2 Se 1.73 S 6.27 via irradiation with 375 nm ultraviolet light.

CpFe(CO) 2 Radical Generated from Dinuclear [CpFe(CO) 2 ] 2 and Mononuclear (Cp)(CO) 2 Fe(H): Density Functional Theory Is Accurate for One, But Not Both

Density functional theory (DFT) methods remain the most practical approach to calculating properties and reaction mechanisms of transition metal complexes. While the accuracy of DFT methods has been evaluated for some properties of mononuclear organometallic complexes there has been a general lack of evaluation for dinuclear organometallic complexes, in particular bonding changes related to reaction mechanisms. Here, this work evaluated DFT and coupled cluster methods for the accuracy of calculating the CpFe(CO) 2 radical (Fp•) generated from dinuclear [CpFe(CO) 2 ] 2 (Fp 2 ) and mononuclear [(Cp)(CO) 2 Fe(H)] (Fp-H). This transition metal radical fragment was evaluated because dinuclear complexes built with it have recently shown a variety of unique reactions but has proven challenging to accurately calculate with DFT methods. Here we show that DFT methods provide a surprising wide range of fragmentation energies for Fp 2 and lower and mid rung DFT methods as well as DLPNO–CCSD(T) perform well for this dissociation energy. The highest rung double-hybrid methods have a large range in the Fp 2 dissociation energy, and the energy greatly depends on the amount of MP2 correlation energy included. For generating Fp• from Fp-H the lower and mid rung methods that worked well for Fp 2 showed significant error. Double-hybrid methods unfortunately are only accurate for the Fe–H bond if they are very inaccurate for the Fp 2 dissociation energy. While DLPNO–CCSD(T) is not perfect, and not close to chemically accurate for the Fe–H bond, it does provide reasonable accuracy for both Fp 2 and Fp-H dissociation energies.

Photodissociation and Infrared Spectroscopy of U + (CO 2 ) n , UO + (CO 2 ) n , and UO 2+ (CO 2 ) n Cation-Molecular Complexes

Laser vaporization of uranium in a pulsed supersonic expansion of carbon dioxide is used to produce complexes of the form U + (CO 2 ) n , UO + (CO 2 ) n , and UO 2+ (CO 2 ) n . These ions are selected in a reflectron time-offlight mass spectrometer and studied with visible laser photodissociation and tunable infrared laser photodissociation spectroscopy in the region of the CO 2 antisymmetric stretch. The dissociation patterns and spectroscopy of these ions indicate that CO 2 ligands are intact molecules. Although reaction products that form oxide-carbonyl or oxalate species are predicted to be stable, there is no direct evidence in the frequency range studied for the formation of these species. There is no clear indication for the coordination numbers for singly charged uranium and its oxide complexes with CO 2 . However, there is strong support in the vibrational patterns for an eight-coordinate complex of the doubly charged UO 2+ species, i.e., UO 2+ (CO 2 ) 8 .

A dual promotional effect of doping tantalum (Ta) in atomically dispersed Ru/CeO 2 catalyst toward CO 2 methanation: Enhanced associative adsorption of CO 2 and activation of H 2

Precisely controlling the product selectivity in CO 2 hydrogenation through rational catalyst design presents a promising approach to mitigate environmental and energy-related challenges, though it remains a significant scientific hurdle. Herein, the CH 4 selectivity of 0.5 wt% Ru loaded catalysts at 250 °C was effectively shifted from approximately 35 % to 100 % through the incorporation of Ta dopant into the CeO 2 support. The EXAFS spectra in conjunction with CO DRIFTS experiment indicated the presence of atomically dispersed Ru particles anchored on the Ta-doped CeO 2 surface. A higher oxidized CeO 2 surface was evidenced in the presence of Ta dopant. The presence of Ta dopant also improved the dispersion of Ru species and their interaction with the support. Most importantly, the Ru/Ta-CeO 2 catalyst exhibited a pronounced capacity for associative CO 2 -adsorption under atmospheric pressure at 50 °C. An improved H 2 activation was also observed under CO 2 hydrogenation conditions. This novel finding of the dual promotional effect of Ta carries a significant impact in the field of CO 2 capture and utilization.

Efficient Self-Sensitized Photochemical CO 2 Reduction Using [Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 (I)] 2+ and [Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 (CH 3 CN)] 3+ Photocatalysts with Pendent Ammonium Cations

Rhenium(I) tricarbonyl complexes fac-[Re(bpy)(CO) 3 (L)]n + are the classical examples of self-sensitized photocatalysts capable of the dual roles of light absorption and catalysis. Here, in this work, a series of dicationic halido or tricationic solvento complexes fac-[Re(bpy 2+ )(CO) 3 X] n+ (PF 6 ) n (where X = Cl - or I - (n = 2), or CH 3 CN (n = 3) and bpy 2+ is bipyridine modified by two -CH 2 -(NMe3) + tetra-alkylammonium cations) have been investigated as self-sensitized and sensitized CO 2 reduction photocatalysts. Four structural isomers differing in the cation position have been tested in N,Nʹ-dimethylacetamide solvent (DMA) using 1,3-dimethyl-2-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzimidazole (BIH) as the electron donor, and the position of the cationic pendants has a significant impact on the catalyst turnover number and quantum efficiency (ϕ). Up to 455 self-sensitized turnovers of CO and a high photon efficiency (ϕ CO ) of 22% have been achieved. Time-resolved infrared spectroscopy and theoretical calculations were used to characterize the catalytic cycle including the ligand exchange between one-electron reduced (OER) halido and solvento species as well as the binding of CO 2 to the putative two-electron reduced (TER) species. The CO 2 -reactive TER catalyst was formed by disproportionation or intramolecular electron transfer between two forms of the OER catalyst as indicated by the formation of the fully oxidized catalyst concurrent with CO 2 binding. When [Ru(bpy) 3 ] 2+ was used as a sensitizer, catalyst durability improved, and the selectivity toward formate increased as high as 3.3:1 over CO (total TON = 1370) due to acidification of the reaction, which promotes formation of the hydride intermediate, as BIH was consumed and deprotonated.

D1((2)B2g) to D0((2)Au) Fluorescence from the Matrix-Isolated Perylene Cation Following Laser Excitation into the D5(2)B3g) and D2 ((2)B3g) Electronic States

Fluorescence spectra of the perylene cation, pumped by direct laser excitation via the D(sub 2)((2)B(sub 3g)) (left arrow) D(sub 0)((2)A(sub u)) and D(sub 5)(2)B(sub 3g)) (left arrow) D(sub 0)((2)A(sub u)) transitions, are presented. Direct excitation into the D5 or D2 states is followed by rapid non-radiative relaxation to D1 that, in turn, relaxes radiatively. Excitation spectroscopy across the D(sub 2)((2)B(sub 3g)) (left arrow) D(sub 0)((2)A(sub u)) transition near 730 nm shows that site splitting plays little or no role in determining the spectral substructure in the ion spectra. Tentative assignments for ground state vibrational frequencies are made by comparison of spectral intervals with calculated normal mode frequencies.

High-temperature Raman spectroscopy of K 2 Ca(CO 3 ) 2 bütschliite and Na 2 Ca 2 (CO 3 ) 3 shortite

Raman spectra of Na 2 Ca 2 (CO 3 ) 3 shortite and K 2 Ca(CO 3 ) 2 bütschliite were measured to 715°C and 740°C respectively, under vacuum. The vibrational spectra demonstrate that shortite converts to nyerereite (Na 2 Ca(CO 3 ) 2 ) and calcite at 535°C. This assemblage is stable to ~700°C, where nyerereite begins to decompose. Bütschliite converts to the isochemical phase fairchildite at 570°C, which is stable to 665°C, where it decomposes to an assemblage of K 2 CO 3 and CaO. The variation of anharmonicity between different vibrational modes of each of the low temperature phases is assessed, and these yield insights into inter-carbonate group couplings. In conclusion, both fairchildite and nyerereite exhibit spectral features consistent with extensive disordering.

The binary weight distribution of the extended (2 sup m, 2 sup m-4) code of Reed-Solomon code over GF(2 sup m) with generator polynomial (x-alpha sup 2) (x-alpha sup 3)

Consider an (n,k) linear code with symbols from GF(2 sup m). If each code symbol is represented by a binary m-tuple using a certain basis for GF(2 sup m), a binary (nm,km) linear code called a binary image of the original code is obtained. A lower bound is presented on the minimum weight enumerator for a binary image of the extended (2 sup m, 2 sup m -4) code of Reed-Solomon code over GF(2 sup m) with generator polynomical (x - alpha)(x- alpha squared)(x - alpha cubed) and its dual code, where alpha is a primitive element in GF(2 sup m).

Molecules in Cool Stars: The A 2 Π − X 2 Σ + and the B 2 Σ + − X 2 Σ + Band Systems of CaCl

Cool red giant stars exhibit absorption bands of calcium monochloride (CaCl) in the optical region. In this work, the bands of CaCl corresponding to the A 2 Π − X 2 Σ + transition with v' ≤ 4 and v'' ≤ 4, and B 2 Σ + − X 2 Σ + transition with v' ≤ 2 and v'' ≤ 2 are rotationally analyzed with PGOPHER, a multipurpose program for simulating and fitting molecular spectra. All bands were analyzed using high-resolution absorption spectra collected at the National Solar Observatory in 1985, calibrated with atomic lines from a high-resolution emission spectrum obtained in a separate hollow cathode experiment. The results are compared with previous laser-induced fluorescence measurements. Overall, the accuracy of spectroscopic constants for the A2Π and B2Σ+ states is improved. Scaled transition dipole moment calculations were used to obtain line strengths. Line lists are provided with Einstein A coefficients and oscillator strengths, which can be used to determine CaCl stellar abundances. Additionally, isotope splittings allowed us to estimate band origins for the 40 Ca 37 Cl isotopologue based on band-head positions.

Line List for the A 2 Π−X 2 Σ + and the B 2 Σ + −X 2 Σ + Band Systems of CaF

The spectral analysis of molecule-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars is challenging. Although other calcium and fluorine bearing molecules are observed in the microwave and in the visible spectrum of AGB stars, CaF has never been detected, despite favorable chemical equilibrium predictions. Yet, measuring the CaF abundance could give more insight into the fluorine budget of AGB stars and allow better simulation of stellar spectra. In this work, we present an analysis of the visible spectrum of CaF obtained with a Fourier transform spectrometer. CaF A 2 Π−X 2 Σ + and the B 2 Σ + −X 2 Σ + band systems were excited with a hollow cathode discharge. Using previous fluorescence spectroscopy measurements, highly accurate ground state constants, and reasonable extrapolation schemes, the strongest features of CaF in the visible spectrum can be accurately modeled for both band systems. Spectroscopic constants are determined for A 2 Π with v ≤ 16 and for B 2 Σ + with v ≤ 20. Ab initio transition dipole moment curves of both transitions were calculated and scaled, and we provide a line list with Einstein A coefficients and oscillator strengths. This line list can be used to simulate spectra of CaF at temperatures and pressures relevant to astrophysical environments.

Synthesis and Structural Characterization of a Novel Indium Mercapto Derivative [clln(sch2(co)o)2]2-[(4-mepyh)2]2+

The synthesis and structural characterization of a novel In(III) complex is described. The reaction between InCl3 with sodium mercapto-acetic acid, (NaSCH2(CO)OH) in 4-methylpyridine, (CH3(C5H5N), (4-Mepy)) at 25 C affords [ClIn(SCH2(CO)O)2]2- [(4-MepyH)2]2+. X-ray diffraction studies show it to have a distorted square pyramidal geometry, with the [(-SCH2(CO)CO-)] ligands in a trans conformation. Quasielastic and Inelastic Neutron Scattering Study of Ultraconfined Water in Natural Mordenite ((Ca,Na 2 ,K 2 )Al 2 Si 10 O 24 ·7H 2 O)

Mordenite ((Ca,Na 2 ,K 2 )Al 2 Si 10 O 24 ·7H 2 O) is a natural and synthetic nanoporous zeolite containing several channels of different sizes in its structure. Because of this, its structure provides an important opportunity to study the relationship between confined and ultraconfined water as these channels have sizes between those typical of these water environments. In this study, the properties of water molecules in these environments were analyzed using inelastic and quasielastic neutron spectroscopy of a natural mordenite. The quasielastic spectra showed the presence of nonfreezing, mobile water molecules through the entire temperature range of the measurements, but very little anisotropy of the dynamics measured along and perpendicular to the channels. Faster and slower quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) components may be consistent with the presence of two separate classes of water molecules in mordenite. Inelastic neutron spectroscopy also found no evidence of directional anisotropy. In conclusion, the strong intensity characteristic of neutron recoil on protons from highly mobile water molecules at low temperature (5 K), along with a significant shift of water librational band to lower energies and the O–H stretching modes to high energies, indicate that the hydrogen bonds acting on these water molecules in mordenite resemble those in liquid water rather than ice.

Raman spectroscopic investigation of ianthinite [U$_2^{4+}$(UO$_2$)$_4$O$_6$(OH)$_4$(H$_2$O)$_4$]·$5$H$_2$O, a rare mixed-valence uranium oxide hydrate

Ianthinite ([[U$_2^{4+}$(UO$_2$)$_4$O$_6$(OH)$_4$(H$_2$O)$_4$]·$5$H$_2$O) is an exotic mineral that possesses U in both tetravalent and hexavalent oxidation states and is structurally related to the U 3 O 8 polymorphs, which are commonly encountered technogenic materials in the nuclear fuel cycle. Despite the similarities between U 3 O 8 and ianthinite, and the importance of ianthinite in U paragenesis, no Raman spectra have been reported for this mineral. Here, to gain a more complete understanding of how structural attributes of ianthinite give rise to observable spectroscopic features and how these may relate to important materials in the nuclear fuel cycle, we provide, for the first time, Raman spectra of ianthinite. Ianthinite readily oxidizes at ambient conditions, complicating analysis of phase-pure material. Several analytical methods are employed herein to decouple the Raman features of ianthinite from its alteration product(s). First, a simple difference spectrum is presented, then results of Raman spectroscopic mapping are employed, and finally, we use a novel processing and analysis method. Each analysis method provides different insight into structural features that are unique to ianthinite, in particular, features that are attributable to U(IV) in distorted octahedral coordination in both ianthinite and U 3 O 8 phases.

p(2 x 2) and c(2 x 2) coverages of Cl and F on Ni(100), a comparison with O and S on Ni(100)

The rigid lattice adsorbate vibrational frequency normal to the surface, omega(e,r) and height above the surface, R(transverse), are computed for p(2 x 2) (0.25 ML) and c(2 x 2) (0.5 ML) coverages of Cl and F. These calculations show a small change in omega(e,r) and a small increase in R(transverse) with increased coverage. The bonding of Cl and F is compared to that found for O and S, both of which show a decrease in R(transverse) and O which shows a larger shift in omega(e,r).

Observation of CH A (sup 2)Delta approaches X (sup 2)Pi(sub r) and B (sup 2)Sigma(sup -) approaches X (sup 2)Pi(sub r) emissions in gas-phase collisions of fast O((sup 3)P) atoms with acetylene

Optical emissions in single-collision, beam-beam reactions of fast (3-22 eV translational energy) O(P-3) atoms with C2H2 have been measured in the wavelength range 300-850 nm. Two features were observed, one with a peak wavelength at 431 nm, corresponding to the CH A (sup 2)Delta yields X (sup 2)Pi(sub r) transition, and a second weaker emission in the range 380-400 nm corresponding to the B (sup 2)Sigma(sup -) yields X (sup 2)Pi(sub r) transition. Both the A yields X and B yields X emissions were fit to a synthetic spectrum of CH(A) at a vibrational temperature T(sub v) of 10,000 K (0.86 eV) and a rotational temperature T(r) of approximately 5000 K (0.43 eV); and CH(B) to T(sub v) = 2500 K (0.22 eV) and T(sub r) = 1000 K (0.09 eV). The energy threshold for the A yields X emission was measured to be 7.3 +/- 0.4 eV (lab) or 4.5 +/- 0.2 eV (c.m.). This agrees with the energy threshold of 7.36 eV (lab) for the reaction O(P-3) + C2H2 yields CH(A) + HCO.
