On the relationship between precipitation extreme and local temperature over eastern China based on convection permitting simulations: roles of different moisture processes and precipitation types

The Clausius–Clapeyron (CC) scaling, which indicates a roughly 7% increase in saturated water vapor per 1 °C increase in temperature, can serve as a strong constraint linking the intensity of precipitation extremes and local temperature. However, the relationship between precipitation extreme and local temperature (referred to as the PE-T relationship) does not always follow the CC scaling and is highly dependent on climate regimes. In this study, we investigated the impacts of different moisture processes and precipitation types on the PE-T relationship over eastern China during the summertime based on convection-permitting model simulations. Consistent with observations, the simulated intensity of precipitation extremes increases with temperature at a rate close to CC (double-CC) scaling below (above) 20 °C. When the temperature exceeds 25 °C, precipitation intensity starts to drop. Precipitation extremes are mainly contributed by the stratiform, MCS (i.e., mesoscale convective system) convective, and non-MCS convective precipitation at low (< 20 °C), medium (20–25 °C), and high (> 25 °C) temperatures, respectively, suggesting that the double-CC scaling occurs when convective types become dominant, while the negative scaling at high temperatures is attributed to the reduced horizontal scale of convection. Corresponding to the reduced intensity of precipitation at high temperatures, there are stronger divergence and subsidence in the low-level atmosphere, which is probably caused by the net cooling associated with the enhanced melting and evaporation of falling hydrometeors due to the lower relative humidity in the low-level atmosphere. Overall, our findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the temperature dependence of precipitation extremes in eastern China.

Evaluating fast methods for static polarizabilities on extended conjugated oligomers

Given the importance of accurate polarizability calculations to many chemical applications, coupled with the need for efficiency when calculating the properties of sets of molecules or large oligomers, we present a benchmark study examining possible calculation methods for polarizable materials. We first investigate the accuracy of the additive model used in GFN2, a highly-efficient semi-empirical tight-binding method, and the D4 dispersion model, comparing its predicted additive polarizabilities to ωB97XD results for a subset of PubChemQC and a compiled benchmark set of molecules spanning polarizabilities from approximately 3 Å 3 to 600 Å 3 , with some compounds in the range of approximately 1200–1400 Å 3 . Although we find additive GFN2 polarizabilities, and thus D4, to have large errors with polarizability calculations on large conjugated oligomers, it would appear an empirical quadratic correction can largely remedy this. We also compare the accuracy of DFT polarizability calculations run using basis sets of varying size and level of augmentation, determining that a non-augmented basis set may be used for large, highly polarizable species in conjunction with a linear correction factor to achieve accuracy extremely close to that of aug-cc-pVTZ.

Gas phase formation of cyclopentanaphthalene (benzindene) isomers via reactions of 5- and 6-indenyl radicals with vinylacetylene

The tricyclic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) 3H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene (C 13 H 10 ), 1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalene (C 13 H 10 ) and 1H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene (C 13 H 10 ) along with their indene-based bicyclic isomers (E)-5-(but-1-en-3-yn-1-yl)-1H-indene, (E)-6-(but-1-en-3-yn-1-yl)-1H-indene, 5-(but-3-ene-1-yn-1-yl)-1H-in-dene, and 6-(but-3-ene-1-yn-1-yl)-1H-indene were formed via a “directed synthesis” in a high-temperature chemical micro reactor at the temperature of 1300 ± 10 K through the reactions of the 5- and 6-indenyl radicals (C 9 H 7 ˙) with vinylacetylene (C 4 H 4 ). The isomer distributions were probed utilizing tunable vacuum ultraviolet light by recording the photoionization efficiency curves at mass-to-charge of m/z = 166 (C 13 H 10 ) and 167 ( 13 CC 12 H 10 ) of the products in a supersonic molecular beam. Here, the underlying reaction mechanisms involve the initial formation of van-der-Waals complexes followed by addition of the 5- and 6-indenyl radicals to vinylacetylene via submerged barriers, followed by isomerization (hydrogen shifts, ring closures), and termination via atomic hydrogen elimination accompanied by aromatization. All the barriers involved in the formation of 3H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene, 1H-cyclopenta[b]naphthalene and 1H-cyclopenta[a]naphthalene are submerged with respect to the reactants indicating that the mechanisms are in fact barrierless, potentially forming PAHs via the hydrogen abstraction – vinylacetylene addition (HAVA) pathway in the cold molecular clouds such as Taurus Molecular Cloud-1 (TMC-1) at temperatures as low as 10 K.

New insights into the doubly charmed exotic mesons

Abstract Using effective Lagrangians constrained by the heavy quark spin symmetry and chiral symmetry, for the light quarks, we analyze the $$D^0 D^0\pi ^+,$$ D 0 D 0 π + , $$\bar{D}^0D^0\pi ^0$$ D ¯ 0 D 0 π 0 and $$D^0\bar{D}^{*0}$$ D 0 D ¯ ∗ 0 invariant mass spectra. Performing a simultaneous analysis of the doubly charmed and charm-anti-charm states gives further insights into the nature of the $$T^+_{cc}$$ T cc + and $$\chi ^0_{c1}(3872),$$ χ c 1 0 ( 3872 ) , exotic hadrons. It is confirmed that both states should lie below their respective $$DD^*$$ D D ∗ / $$D\bar{D}^*$$ D D ¯ ∗ thresholds. Also, the contributions of the triangle and box diagrams are negligible.

Property Variations in Modern REBCO Coated Conductors from Multiple Manufacturers

The complex, multilayer structure of REBCO Coated Conductor (CC) poses significant challenges in the fabrication of high magnetic field devices where large stresses may initiate various forms of damage. Our goal is to peer below the cartoon representations of CC so that, amongst other things, we might better understand whether a CC from one manufacturer is interchangeable with that from another. This involves knowledge of a broad range of electromagnetic, geometric, microstructural, and J c (θ,B,T) properties, and their variations that collectively pose challenges for the fault tolerance of REBCO CC devices. Accordingly, comparative measurements of J c , visualization of flux penetration with Magneto-Optical Imaging (MOI), tape geometry from Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) of polished cross-sections, and extensive optical microscopy was performed on recently purchased samples from multiple manufacturers. Our analyses reveal many deviations from or characteristics absent from manufacturers’ specifications, while a comparison of different manufacturers’ mechanically and laser slit tapes shows a diverse array of slitting characteristics amongst the manufacturers and variation in properties those made to the same specification. Laser slit tapes from several manufacturers reveal ablated edges with damaged regions extending up to 50 μm, comparable to the damaged region found in the mechanically slit CC of this study. Overall, the aim of this study is to flesh out appropriate ways to understand the real conductor below the manufacturers’ cartoons to avoid surprises in our REBCO CC coil development program. The goal of this work was to perform a broad array of characterizations of the type needed for validation of purpose for making high field magnets: to our surprise we found a wide range of properties which greatly impact the mechanical strength and electromagnetic performance of solenoids composed of these conductors and reinforced the need for a broad characterization program for each conductor prior to its implementation.

One Collision—Two Substituents: Gas–Phase Preparation of Xylenes under Single–Collision Conditions

The fundamental reaction pathways to the simplest dialkylsubstituted aromatics—xylenes (C 6 H 4 (CH 3 ) 2 )—in high-temperature combustion flames and in low-temperature extraterrestrial environments are still unknown, but critical to understand the chemistry and molecular mass growth processes in these extreme environments. Exploiting crossed molecular beam experiments augmented by state-of-the-art electronic structure and statistical calculations, this study uncovers a previously elusive, facile gas-phase synthesis of xylenes through an isomer-selective reaction of 1-propynyl (methylethynyl, CH 3 CC) with 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene (isoprene, C 5 H 8 ). The reaction dynamics are driven by a barrierless addition of the radical to the diene moiety of 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene followed by extensive isomerization (hydrogen shifts, cyclization) prior to unimolecular decomposition accompanied by aromatization via atomic hydrogen loss. This overall exoergic reaction affords a preparation of xylenes not only in high-temperature environments such as in combustion flames and around circumstellar envelopes of carbon-rich Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars, but also in low-temperature cold molecular clouds (10 K) and in hydrocarbon-rich atmospheres of planets and their moons such as Triton and Titan. Furthermore, our study established a hitherto unknown gas-phase route to xylenes and potentially more complex, disubstituted benzenes via a single collision event highlighting the significance of an alkyl-substituted ethynyl-mediated preparation of aromatic molecules in our Universe.

Reaction Energetics and 13 C Fractionation of Alanine Transamination in the Aqueous and Gas Phases

The alanine transaminase enzyme catalyzes the transfer of an amino group from alanine to α-ketoglutarate to produce pyruvate and glutamate. Isotope fractionation factors (IFFs) for the reaction +H 3 NCH(CH 3 )COO – + – OOCCH 2 CH 2 C(O)COO – ↔ CH 3 C(O)COO – + + H 3 NCH(CH 2 CH 2 COO – )COO – (zwitterionic neutral alanine + doubly deprotonated α-ketoglutarate ↔ pyruvate + zwitterionic glutamate anion) were calculated from the partition functions of explicitly and implicitly solvated molecules at 298 K. Calculations were done for alanine (noncharge separated, zwitterion, deprotonated), pyruvic acid (neutral, deprotonated), glutamic acid (noncharge separated, zwitterion, deprotonated, doubly deprotonated), and α-ketoglutaric acid (neutral, deprotonated, doubly deprotonated). The computational results, calculated from gas phase- and aqueous-optimized clusters with explicit H 2 O molecules at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ and MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ/COSMO levels, respectively, predict that substitution of 13 C at the C2 position of alanine and pyruvic acid and their various forms leads to the C2 position of pyruvic acid/pyruvate being enriched in 13 C/ 12 C ratio by 9‰. Simpler approaches that estimate the IFFs based solely on changes in the zero-point energies (ZPEs) are consistent with the higher-level model. ZPE-based IFFs calculated for simple analogues formaldehyde and methylamine (analogous to the C2 positions of pyruvate and alanine, respectively) predict a 13 C enrichment in formaldehyde of 7–8‰ at the MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ and aug-cc-pVTZ levels. A simple predictive model using canonical functional group frequencies and reduced masses for 13 C exchange between R 2 C=O and R 2 CH–NH 2 predicted enrichment in R 2 C=O that is too large by a factor of two but is qualitatively accurate compared with the more sophisticated models. Our models are all in agreement with the expectation that pyruvate and formaldehyde will be preferentially enriched in 13 C because of the strength of their >C=O bond relative to that of ≡C–NH 2 in alanine and methylamine. 13 C/ 12 C substitution is also modeled at the methyl and carboxylic acid sites of alanine and pyruvic acid, respectively.

Experimental Study of Acceptor Removal in UFSD

The performance of the Ultra-Fast Silicon Detectors (UFSD) after irradiation with neutrons and protons is compromised by the removal of acceptors in the thin layer below the junction responsible for the gain. In this study, the effect is tested both with capacitance–voltage, C–V, measurements of the doping concentration and with measurements of charge collection, CC, using charged particles. We find a perfect linear correlation between the bias voltage to deplete the gain layer determined with C–V and the bias voltage to collect a defined charge, measured with charge collection. An example for the usefulness of this correlation is presented.

Oxygen isotope evidence from Ryugu samples for early water delivery to Earth by CI chondrites

The delivery of water to the inner Solar System, including Earth, is still a debated topic. A preferential role for hydrated asteroids in this process is supported by isotopic measurements. Carbonaceous chondrite (CC) meteorites represent our main source of information about these volatile-rich asteroids. However, the destruction of weaker materials during atmospheric entry creates a bias in our CC data. The return of surface materials from the C-type asteroid 162173 Ryugu by the Hayabusa2 spacecraft provides a unique opportunity to study high-porosity, low-density, primitive materials, unrepresented in the meteorite record. We measured the bulk oxygen isotope composition from four Ryugu particles and show that they most closely resemble the rare CI (CC Ivuna-type) chondrites, but with some differences that we attribute to the terrestrial contamination of the CI meteorites. We suggest that CI-related material is widespread among carbonaceous asteroids and a more important source of Earth’s water and other volatiles than its limited presence in our meteoritic collection indicates.

Importance of finite-size corrections for accurate ab initio modeling of carrier capture at semiconductor defects: A case study of substitutional C N in GaN

In ab initio studies of carrier-capture processes in defective semiconductor materials, the single-effective-mode formalism and the static-coupling approximation have become the predominant theoretical approaches for determining carrier-capture coefficients. The single-mode formalism relies on accurate nonequilibrium defect energies obtained from density-functional theory (DFT), where required inputs are a series of configurationally displaced, defect-containing supercells obtained using an interpolative ansatz, and where the DFT outputs are corresponding total energies that have traditionally been postprocessed using a long-established ground-state formulation of finite-size corrections and defect-formation energies. This formulation remains commonly used even though the defects that form a configuration-coordinate (CC) diagram typically exist as structures that are displaced from the ground state. To remedy this inconsistency, Kumagai has recently proposed novel methods for implementing finite-size corrections specifically intended for DFT calculations of the defect energies used to construct CC diagrams and implement the single-mode formalism [Y. Kumagai, Phys. Rev. B 107, L220101 (2023)]. Kumagai's approach builds on the latest finite-size-correction methods introduced to describe vertical charge-state transitions for charge-localizing point defects in semiconductors and insulators [T. Gake et al., Phys. Rev. B 101, 020102 (2020); S. Falletta et al., Phys. Rev. B 102, 041115 (2020)]. The newly identified finite-size artifact treated in these studies is the polarization charge induced on a configurationally frozen defect and its subsequent interaction with a vertical transition in charge state. In this work, we evaluate Kumagai's proposed methodology by applying it in a high-precision DFT study of carrier capture by substitutional C N in GaN, a well-characterized and technologically relevant defect and material. We have rigorously calculated C N defect energies across various supercell sizes for each defect configuration and charge state on the hole-capture CC diagram of C N (𝑞=−1), enabling a direct comparison of the slopes of the defect energies versus inverse cell size with those predicted by Kumagai. The most consequential prediction of Kumagai's method is that these slopes distinctly vary as the square of the linear-interpolation parameter used to construct the nonequilibrium defect configurations. Our results quantitatively support this prediction. Moreover, with these new finite-size corrections and multiple-cell-size DFT calculations in place, we find that the classical energy barrier for hole capture by C N (𝑞=−1) in GaN decreases to 0.092–0.127 eV. This finding confirms the recent ≈ 0.1 eV prediction of Reshchikov based on the weak temperature dependence for hole capture observed in photoluminescence experiments [M. A. Reshchikov, J. Appl. Phys. 129, 121101 (2021)]. These results stand in stark contrast to previously calculated barriers of 0.486 and 0.73 eV, which also used the single-mode formalism but were obtained by instead using ground-state-based finite-size corrections. Our reduced classical barrier for capture increases the temperature-dependent hole-capture coefficient of a C N (𝑞=−1) defect by more than two to four orders of magnitude for temperatures of 100–600 K, compared to the previous 0.486 eV results. While other defects may not be as dramatically affected as here, we suggest that incorporating proper finite-size corrections for the vertical-transition-like states embedded within CC diagrams is an essential, yet previously unrecognized, component of accurate modeling of carrier-capture when using the single-effective-mode formalism.

Exact matrix product state representation and convergence of a fully correlated electronic wavefunction in the infinite-basis limit

Here In this paper we present the exact representation of a fully correlated electronic wavefunction as the single-particle basis approaches completeness. It consists of a half-infinite chain of matrices of exponentially increasing size. The complete basis limit is illustrated numerically using the density-matrix renormalization-group method by computing the core-valence entanglement in the C 2 ground state in increasing subsets of cc-pVTZ and pVQZ bases until convergence is reached.

Incorporating DD π effects and left-hand cuts in lattice QCD studies of the T cc (3875) +

We generalize the relativistic field-theoretic three-particle finite-volume scattering formalism to describe generic DDπ systems in the charm C = 2 sector. This includes the isospin-0 channel, in which the recently discovered doubly-charmed tetraquark T cc (3875) + is expected to manifest as a pole in the DDπ → DDπ scattering amplitude. The formalism presented here can also be applied to lattice QCD settings in which the D * is bound and, in particular, remains valid below the left-hand cut in DD * scattering, thus resolving an issue in previous analyses of lattice-determined finite-volume energies.

First Evidence of Solar Neutrino Interactions on 13 C

The SNO+ Collaboration reports the first evidence of 8 B solar neutrinos interacting on 13 C nuclei. The charged current interaction proceeds through 13 C +𝜈 𝑒 → 13 N+𝑒 − which is followed, with a 10 minute half life, by 13 N → 13 C +𝑒 + +𝜈 𝑒 . The detection strategy is based on the delayed coincidence between the electron and the positron. Evidence for the charged current signal is presented with a significance of 4.2⁢𝜎. Using the natural abundance of 13 C present in the scintillator, 5.7 metric tons of 13 C over 231 days of data were used in this analysis. The 5.6$^{+3.0}_{−2.3}$ observed events in the data set are consistent with the expectation of 4.7$^{+0.6}_{−1.3}$ events. This result is the second real-time measurement of CC interactions of 8 B neutrinos with nuclei and constitutes the lowest energy observation of neutrino interactions on 13 C generally. This enables the first direct measurement of the CC 𝜈 𝑒 reaction to the ground state of 13 N , yielding an average cross section of (16.1$^{+8.5}_{−6.7}$⁢(stat.)$^{+1.6}_{−2.7}$⁢(syst.))×10 −43 cm 2 over the relevant 8 B solar neutrino energies.

Pressurized in situ X-ray diffraction insights into super/subcritical carbonation reaction pathways of steelmaking slags and constituent silicate minerals

This study explores mineral carbonation of industrial stainless steelmaking slags and relevant synthetic constituent minerals via in situ pressurized X-ray diffraction, to clarify carbonation reaction pathways and efficiency for carbon storage and waste valorization. The primary mineral phases of Argon Oxygen Decarburization (AOD) and Continuous Casting (CC) slags, namely, åkermanite, bredigite, cuspidine, merwinite, and β- and γ-C 2 S, were reacted in a custom-built beryllium-capped XRD reactor filled with either water-saturated (wet) subcritical CO 2 (g), or wet supercritical CO 2(SC) , in a series of carbonation experiments. Formation of calcite and aragonite was observed for most Ca-bearing minerals, transient precipitation of metastable vaterite was observed, while carbonation of AOD and CC slags in CO 2(SC) resulted in hydrated crystalline calcium carbonates and indirect evidence of amorphous carbonate. Overall, results obtained suggest that low-pressure subcritical carbonation routes are attractive for standalone slag carbonation processes, while high-pressure supercritical carbonation routes are amiable to symbiotic integration with CO 2(SC) -generating green technologies.

Description of a novel extremophile green algae, Chlamydomonas pacifica , and its potential as a biotechnology host

We present the comprehensive characterization of a newly identified microalga, Chlamydomonas pacifica , originally isolated from a soil sample in San Diego, CA, USA. This species showcases remarkable biological versatility, including a broad pH range tolerance (6–11.5), high thermal tolerance (up to 42 °C), and salinity resilience (up to 2 % NaCl). Its amenability to genetic manipulation and sexual reproduction via mating, particularly between the two opposing strains CC-5697 & CC-5699, now publicly available through the Chlamydomonas Resource Center, underscores its potential as a biotechnological chassis. The biological assessment of C. pacifica revealed versatile metabolic capabilities, including diverse nitrogen assimilation capability, motility and phototaxis. Genomic and transcriptomic analyses identified 17,829 genes within a 121 Mb genome, featuring a GC content of 61 %. The codon usage of C. pacifica closely mirrors that of C. reinhardtii , indicating a conserved genetic architecture that supports a trend in codon preference with minor variations. Phylogenetic analyses position C. pacifica within the core-Reinhardtinia clade yet distinct from known Volvocales species. The lipidomic data revealed an abundance of triacylglycerols (TAGs), promising for biofuel applications and lipids for health-related benefits. Our investigation lays the groundwork for exploiting C. pacifica in biotechnological applications, from biofuel generation to synthesizing biodegradable plastics, positioning it as a versatile host for future bioengineering endeavors.
