Bending Tests of Ring-stiffened Circular Cylinders

Twenty-five ring-stiffened circular cylinders were loaded to failure in bending. The results are presented in the form of design curves which are applicable to cylinders with heavy rings that fail as a result of local buckling.

Heat transfer in the stagnation region of the junction of a circular cylinder perpendicular to a flat plate

The heat transfer rate in the stagnation region of the junction of a circular cylinder perpendicular to a flat plate was measured for a range of Reynolds numbers varying from 3.0 x 10 to the 4th to 7.0 x 10 to the 5th and a flow Mach number of 0.14. The measurements were performed in a shock-tube facility using a reflected shockwave technique and thin-film platinum heat gages. The heat flux was measured for both the plate and the circular cylinder. A substantial increase in the heat transfer rate in the junction region was observed. The influence of the cylinder over the flat plate extended beyond 3/4 cylinder diameter for low Reynolds numbers. For high Reynolds numbers the maximum increase in the heat transfer rate was observed to be approximately 100 percent, but for very low Reynolds numbers a maximum increase in the heat flux to the plate by a factor of 5 was observed. The variations in the heat transfer rate to the stagnation point of the cylinder was very small.

The inviscid axisymmetric stability of the supersonic flow along a circular cylinder

The supersonic flow past a thin straight circular cylinder is investigated. The associated boundary layer flow (i.e., the velocity and temperature field) is computed; the asymptotic, far downstream solution is obtained, and compared with the full numerical results. The inviscid, linear, axisymmetric (temporal) stability of this boundary layer is also studied. A so called doubly generalized inflexion condition is derived, which is a condition for the existence of so called subsonic neutral modes. The eigenvalue problem (for the complex wavespeed) is computed for two freestream Mach numbers (2.8 and 3.8), and this reveals that curvature has a profound effect on the stability of the flow. The first unstable inviscid mode is seen to rapidly disappear as curvature is introduced, while the second (and generally the most important) mode suffers a substantially reduced amplification rate.

The velocity and vorticity fields of the turbulent near wake of a circular cylinder

The purpose of this research is to provide a detailed experimental database of velocity and vorticity statistics in the very near wake (x/d less than 10) of a circular cylinder at Reynolds number of 3900. This study has determined that estimations of the streamwise velocity component in flow fields with large nonzero cross-stream components are not accurate. Similarly, X-wire measurements of the u and v velocity components in flows containing large w are also subject to the errors due to binormal cooling. Using the look-up table (LUT) technique, and by calibrating the X-wire probe used here to include the range of expected angles of attack (+/- 40 deg), accurate X-wire measurements of instantaneous u and v velocity components in the very near wake region of a circular cylinder has been accomplished. The approximate two-dimensionality of the present flow field was verified with four-wire probe measurements, and to some extent the spanwise correlation measurements with the multisensor rake. Hence, binormal cooling errors in the present X-wire measurements are small.

Computation of flow around a circular cylinder in a supercritical regime

Compressible flows around a circular cylinder in a supercritical regime at Mach number 0.3 have been calculated by using the Beam-Warming-Steger scheme based on the full Navier-Stokes equations with improved accuracy. The flow patterns are visualized extensively to observe the characteristics in this regime. The computations show that the flow at certain Reynolds numbers in a supercritical regime becomes rather steady and irregular with small drag coefficients. This may correspond to the experimental observations that the Strouhal number can not be measured clearly at a certain Reynolds number range in the supercritical regime.

Spectral simulation of unsteady compressible flow past a circular cylinder

An unsteady compressible viscous wake flow past a circular cylinder was successfully simulated using spectral methods. A new approach in using the Chebyshev collocation method for periodic problems is introduced. It was further proved that the eigenvalues associated with the differentiation matrix are purely imaginary, reflecting the periodicity of the problem. It was been shown that the solution of a model problem has exponential growth in time if improper boundary conditions are used. A characteristic boundary condition, which is based on the characteristics of the Euler equations of gas dynamics, was derived for the spectral code. The primary vortex shedding frequency computed agrees well with the results in the literature for Mach = 0.4, Re = 80. No secondary frequency is observed in the power spectrum analysis of the pressure data.

Spanwise structures in transitional flow around circular cylinders

An experimental investigation of the flow around a smooth circular cylinder at the beginning of the critical transition, where the drag coefficient starts to decrease, was carried out. The measurements disclosed the presence of spanwise structures occurring symmetrically on both sides of the cylinder, associated with large amplitude, low frequency flow components. Mean pressure maps and spanwise cross correlations of pressures and velocities are presented.

Tests of Ring-stiffened Circular Cylinders Subjected to a Transverse Shear Load

Thirty-four circular cylinders stiffened by heavy rings were loaded to failure in combined bending and shear with a transverse shear load. The results are presented in the form of an interaction curve which is applicable to the design of ring-stiffened cylinders that fail as a result of local buckling. (author)
