Model compilation for real-time planning and diagnosis with feedback

This paper describes MEXEC, an implemented micro executive that compiles a device model that can have feedback into a structure for subsequent evaluation. This system computes both the most likely current device mode from n sets of sensor measurements and the n-1 step reconfiguration plan that is most likely to result in reaching a target mode - if such a plan exists. A user tunes the system by increasing n to improve system capability at the cost of real-time performance.

Long-duration life tests of slip ring capsule assemblies for inertial guidance platforms

Eight slip ring capsules, each having 80 or 100 circuits, were operated for time periods ranging from 14,300 hours to 24,700 hours. The test mode simulated the motion of gimbal axes of the Saturn inertial guidance the platform in an organic free nitrogen environment. Computer-compiled noise data (approximately 45,000 recordings) were graphed as a function of test time and position within the capsules and as extreme probability distributions. Greater than ninety-nine percent of the noise measurements for the capsules with sufficient lubrication were less than 10 milliohms. Capsules with glass dielectrics did not perform significantly differently than those with filled epoxy dielectrics. The initial wear mode of prow formation was followed by rider wear. After 10 to the 8th power wipes, ring wear depth did not exceed the surface finish and the radial rider wear depth was less than 13 microns.

Current QSO statistics - Implications for the intergalactic medium

The results of numerous QSO surveys have been compiled and analyzed to form a single spatially averaged QSO ionizing function that is independent of evolution mode (number density or luminosity). An intergalactic medium (IGM) that satisfies the observational constraints may now have a density with respect to closure of approximately 0.1, which is substantially less than hitherto modeled. The aggregate of QSO data also indicate that if evolution is due to number density, then, when split into luminosity classes, an exponential in look-back time fits the data better than a power law, and the evolution rates increase roughly with absolute luminosity if analyzed by the exponential.

Thailand national programme of the earth resources technology satellite

The author has identified the following significant results. Accomplishments include the identification of a series of active alluvial fans along the margins of the Central Plain, the compilation of crop resources maps of central and eastern Thailand, and evaluation of the Purdue/LARS printout using unsupervised mode of an area near Bangkok. Results from LANDSAT 1 imagery and ground truth survey showed that Thailand existing forest in 1973 covered an area of approximately 37% of total land area. The last countrywide survey using aerial photographs at 1:60,000 scale conducted in 1961 gave the figure of 58%. Experience has shown many advantages of LANDSAT imagery over the conventional aerial photography in locating faults and fractures in the preparation of tectonic maps. Several rock types can also be identified from LANDSAT imagery.

Preloaded joint analysis methodology for space flight systems

This report contains a compilation of some of the most basic equations governing simple preloaded joint systems and discusses the more common modes of failure associated with such hardware. It is intended to provide the mechanical designer with the tools necessary for designing a basic bolted joint. Although the information presented is intended to aid in the engineering of space flight structures, the fundamentals are equally applicable to other forms of mechanical design.

A spectrophotometric atlas of white dwarfs compiled from the IUE archives

Ultraviolet spectrophotometric data are presented for 182 subluminous stars, mostly white dwarfs, that have been observed with the low-resolution mode of the IUE satellite since 1978 and for which archived data became available on April 1, 1989. Tables of 20 A binned data are given for all stars. Of these, 133 cover the entire wavelength range of the IUE, while the remainder have partial coverage. Plots of the original unbinned spectra are given. Many targets had multiple spectra combined, and the older spectra were reprocessed and corrected for reduction procedure changes made over the past 10 years.

The relationship between energetic particles and flare properties for impulsive solar flares

The impulsive mode of particle acceleration is studied by searching for 0.2-2 MeV electron increases associated with intense type III/V bursts. It is found that the presence of a type III/V burst in association with a relatively intense flare event indicates the acceleration and escape of greater than 100 KeV electrons. A list of type III/V electron events is compiled, showing that the majority included greater than 10 MeV proton increases, although they were not followed by a type II burst. The results suggest that there are two different modes of proton acceleration with the second mode becoming significant only for larger, gradual flares.

Environmental control system transducer development study

A failure evaluation of the transducers used in the environmental control systems of the Apollo command service module, lunar module, and portable life support system is presented in matrix form for several generic categories of transducers to enable identification of chronic failure modes. Transducer vendors were contacted and asked to supply detailed information. The evaluation data generated for each category of transducer were compiled and published in failure design evaluation reports. The evaluation reports also present a review of the failure and design data for the transducers and suggest both design criteria to improve reliability of the transducers and, where necessary, design concepts for required redesign of the transducers. Remedial designs were implemented on a family of pressure transducers and on the oxygen flow transducer. The design concepts were subjected to analysis, breadboard fabrication, and verification testing.

Geosynchronous platform definition study. Volume 5: Geosynchronous platform synthesis

The development is described of the platform configurations, support subsystems, mission equipment, and servicing concepts. A common support module is developed; subsystem concepts are traded off; data relay, TDRS, earth observational, astro-physics, and advanced navigation and traffic control mission equipment concepts are postulated; and ancillary equipment required for delivery and on-orbit servicing interfaces with geosynchronous platforms is grossly defined. The general approach was to develop a platform concept capable of evolving through three on-orbit servicing modes: remote, EVA, and shirtsleeve. The definition of the equipment is to the assembly level. Weight, power, and volumetric data are compiled for all the platforms.

Experiments for locating damaged truss members in a truss structure

Locating damaged truss members in large space structures will involve a combination of sensing and diagnostic techniques. Methods developed for damage location require experimental verification prior to on-orbit applications. To this end, a series of experiments for locating damaged members using a generic, ten bay truss structure were conducted. A 'damaged' member is a member which has been removed entirely. Previously developed identification methods are used in conjunction with the experimental data to locate damage. Preliminary results to date are included, and indicate that mode selection and sensor location are important issues for location performance. A number of experimental data sets representing various damage configurations were compiled using the ten bay truss. The experimental data and the corresponding finite element analysis models are available to researchers for verification of various methods of structure identification and damage location.

High frequency flow-structural interaction in dense subsonic fluids

Prediction of the detailed dynamic behavior in rocket propellant feed systems and engines and other such high-energy fluid systems requires precise analysis to assure structural performance. Designs sometimes require placement of bluff bodies in a flow passage. Additionally, there are flexibilities in ducts, liners, and piping systems. A design handbook and interactive data base have been developed for assessing flow/structural interactions to be used as a tool in design and development, to evaluate applicable geometries before problems develop, or to eliminate or minimize problems with existing hardware. This is a compilation of analytical/empirical data and techniques to evaluate detailed dynamic characteristics of both the fluid and structures. These techniques have direct applicability to rocket engine internal flow passages, hot gas drive systems, and vehicle propellant feed systems. Organization of the handbook is by basic geometries for estimating Strouhal numbers, added mass effects, mode shapes for various end constraints, critical onset flow conditions, and possible structural response amplitudes. Emphasis is on dense fluids and high structural loading potential for fatigue at low subsonic flow speeds where high-frequency excitations are possible. Avoidance and corrective measure illustrations are presented together with analytical curve fits for predictions compiled from a comprehensive data base.

Frequencies of solar oscillations

Solar oscillations have been observed at three different spatial scales at Big Bear Solar Observatory during 1986-1987 and, using three data sets, a new and more accurate table of solar oscillation frequencies has been compiled. The oscillations, which are presented as functions of radial order n and spherical harmonic degree l, are averages over azimuthal order and therefore approximate the normal mode frequencies of a nonrotating, spherically symmetric sun, near solar minimum. The table contains frequencies for most of the solar p and f modes with l between 0 and 1860, n between 0 and 26, and oscillation mode frequencies between 1.0 and 5.3.

The influence of nonlinear damping on the random response of panels by time domain simulation

The effects of nonlinear damping on the large-deflection response of symmetrically laminated composite panels is studied by time-domain simulation in an attempt to quantify experimentally observed phenomena. A single-mode deflection approach is used in the equations of motion and in the linear and nonlinear damping models. The probability, peak-probability, and spectral-density data are compiled for both strains and deflection. The rms responses as a function of input excitation level are also obtained and compared to linear, equivalent-linearization, and Fokker-Planck equation solutions.

High speed, precision motion strategies for lightweight structures

Abstracts of published papers and dissertations generated during the reporting period are compiled. Work on fine motion control was completed. Specifically, real time control of flexible manipulator vibrations were experimentally investigated. A linear model based on the application of Lagrangian dynamics to a rigid body mode and a series of separable flexible modes was examined with respect to model order requirements, and modal candidate selection. State feedback control laws were implemented based upon linear quadratic regulator design. Specification of the closed loop poles in the regulator design process was obtained by inclusion of a prescribed degree of stability in the manipulator model. Work on gross motion planning and control is also summarized. A systematic method to symbolically derive the full nonlinear dynamic equations of motion of multi-link flexible manipulators was developed.

Computer formulations of aircraft models for simulation studies

Recent developments in formula manipulation compilers and the design of several symbol manipulation languages, enable computers to be used for symbolic mathematical computation. A computer system and language that can be used to perform symbolic manipulations in an interactive mode are used to formulate a mathematical model of an aeronautical system. The example demonstrates that once the procedure is established, the formulation and modification of models for simulation studies can be reduced to a series of routine computer operations.
