Prompt Photofission Neutron Detection in Depleted Uranium

The detection of prompt photofission neutrons during active interrogation is a strong indication of the presence of special nuclear materials. However, the high-energy photons used for interrogation create a very challenging radiation environment for the detection of prompt fission signatures. These challenges include detector saturation and pulse pile-up. Additionally, there is an elevated neutron background that further challenges the detection of prompt fission neutrons. This background is produced because of (γ, Xn) photonuclear reactions in the surrounding high-Z materials. Here, we demonstrate the detection of prompt photofission neutrons in these challenging environments. Depleted uranium (DU) and lead targets are interrogated with bremsstrahlung photons produced by a 9-MV electron linear accelerator. Fast neutrons are detected with trans-stilbene organic detectors, and scintillation pulses are analyzed using a previously developed and demonstrated artificial neural network system. We observe a 5 times higher photoneutron count rate when the lead target is replaced with the DU target. Additionally, we observe a difference in the photoneutron light-output distributions of lead and DU. Here, this difference in the measured distributions is due to the difference in the photoneutron-energy spectra; DU photoneutrons are emitted with (γ, n) and watt-energy spectra, whereas lead photoneutrons are emitted with only the (γ, n) spectrum.

Performance Assessment for the E-Area Low-Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Facility at the Savannah River Site: Appendix I

As stated in Section 9.1.2.2, a final inventory of parent radionuclides is projected for every DU at the time of facility operational closure in 2065. These final closure inventories are upper-bound estimates wherein each DU is assumed to reach its activity capacity. Composition vectors based on existing DU inventories are employed to estimate the final compositions of all existing and future DUs. Specifically, (1) the existing DU compositions are assumed to remain constant; (2) future DUs are assigned averaged existing compositions based on appropriately averaged DUs. This information is detailed in Appendix H, Section H.7. In addition, the variability in composition among existing DUs is used to generate log-normal distributions for uncertainty quantification, which is detailed in Section I.1.1.

Exploring uranium oxidation in glue vapor to help avoid catastrophic slivers on NIF targets

Depleted uranium (DU) hohlraums are utilized for indirect drive fusion experiments at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The production process for DU hohlraums is intricate, involving complex sputtering, machining, and leaching techniques. Achieving low-stress and defect-free hohlraums presents significant challenges. Recent failures have revealed that some uranium flakes, known as slivers, detach from the diagnostic windows and fall onto the capsule. These catastrophic failures were observed only after target assembly, leading to the hypothesis that oxidation of the DU by glue vapor might be the cause. A study investigating the impact of glue vapor on DU hohlraums found that spallation occurred in three out of seven sample hohlraums after three weeks. The slivers observed in these samples were consistent with those seen in assembled targets. This marks the first experimental reproduction of such catastrophic slivering failures. Consequently, future studies can now focus on sliver mitigation and the precise diagnosis of the failure mode.

Black carbon-climate interactions regulate dust burdens over India revealed during COVID-19

India as a hotspot for air pollution has heavy black carbon (BC) and dust (DU) loadings. BC has been identified to significantly impact the Indian climate. However, whether BC-climate interactions regulate Indian DU during the premonsoon season is unclear. Here, using long-term Reanalysis data, we show that Indian DU is positively correlated to northern Indian BC while negatively correlated to southern Indian BC. We further identify the mechanism of BC-dust-climate interactions revealed during COVID-19. BC reduction in northern India due to lockdown decreases solar heating in the atmosphere and increases surface albedo of the Tibetan Plateau (TP), inducing a descending atmospheric motion. Colder air from the TP together with warmer southern Indian air heated by biomass burning BC results in easterly wind anomalies, which reduces dust transport from the Middle East and Sahara and local dust emissions. The premonsoon aerosol-climate interactions delay the outbreak of the subsequent Indian summer monsoon.

Uranium Processing Signatures for Nuclear Forensics (NA22 End of FY23 Report)

A vacuum induction melting (VIM) furnace was used to produce an ~120 kg depleted uranium (DU) rod in November 2021 from well characterized feedstock to investigate the separation of thorium (Th) and protactinium (Pa) from uranium (U) during U metal casting and quantify the behavior of the 230 Th/ 234 U and 231 Pa/ 235 U radiochronometry systems. This work suggested that while 234 Th, measured by gamma spectrometry, appears to segregate to the top and surface of the rod, the concentration of 230 Th determined by isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS) in drill turnings from multiple locations in the rod, including the hot top, is relatively consistent. To evaluate whether Th is potentially enriched at only the very outer surface of the cast DU rod relative to the bulk material in the cast rod, thin surface samples were collected from the cast DU rod. Locations sampled included the inner diameter (ID) and outer diameter (OD) of the bottom of the casting and the ID, OD, and top face of the hot top (very top of the casting). The locations are shown in Figure 1. Four samples were taken from each location at different depths in the cast material. Each cut took approximately 0.03 – 0.05” off of the casting.

Towards UV-Models of Kinetic Mixing and Portal Matter VII: A Light Dark Photon in the 3c3L1A1B Model

The kinetic mixing (KM) portal, by which the Standard Model (SM) photon mixes with a light dark photon arising from a new U(1)DU(1)D gauge group, allows for the possibility of viable scenarios of sub-GeV thermal dark matter (DM) with appropriately suppressed couplings to the SM. This KM can only occur if particles having both SM and dark quantum numbers, here termed portal matter (PM), also exist. The presence of such types of states and the strong suggestion of a need to embed U(1)DU(1)D into a non-abelian gauge structure not too far above the TeV scale based on the RGE running of the U(1)DU(1)D gauge coupling is potentially indicative of an enlarged group linking together the visible and dark sectors. The gauge group G=SU(3)c×SU(3)L×U(1)A×U(1)B=3c3L1A1BG=SU(3)c×SU(3)L×U(1)A×U(1)B=3c3L1A1B is perhaps the simplest setup wherein the SM and dark interactions are partially unified in a non-abelian fashion that is not a simple product group of the form G=GSM×GDG=GSM×GD encountered frequently in earlier work. The present paper describes the implications and phenomenology of this type of setup.

Evaluating stratospheric ozone and water vapour changes in CMIP6 models from 1850 to 2100

Abstract. Stratospheric ozone and water vapour are key components of the Earth system, and past and future changes to both have important impacts on global and regional climate. Here, we evaluate long-term changes in these species from the pre-industrial period (1850) to the end of the 21st century in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 6 (CMIP6) models under a range of future emissions scenarios. There is good agreement between the CMIP multi-model mean and observations for total column ozone (TCO), although there is substantial variation between the individual CMIP6 models. For the CMIP6 multi-model mean, global mean TCO has increased from ∼ 300 DU in 1850 to ∼ 305 DU in 1960, before rapidly declining in the 1970s and 1980s following the use and emission of halogenated ozone-depleting substances (ODSs). TCO is projected to return to 1960s values by the middle of the 21st century under the SSP2-4.5, SSP3-7.0, SSP4-3.4, SSP4-6.0, and SSP5-8.5 scenarios, and under the SSP3-7.0 and SSP5-8.5 scenarios TCO values are projected to be ∼ 10 DU higher than the 1960s values by 2100. However, under the SSP1-1.9 and SSP1-1.6 scenarios, TCO is not projected to return to the 1960s values despite reductions in halogenated ODSs due to decreases in tropospheric ozone mixing ratios. This global pattern is similar to regional patterns, except in the tropics where TCO under most scenarios is not projected to return to 1960s values, either through reductions in tropospheric ozone under SSP1-1.9 and SSP1-2.6, or through reductions in lower stratospheric ozone resulting from an acceleration of the Brewer–Dobson circulation under other Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs). In contrast to TCO, there is poorer agreement between the CMIP6 multi-model mean and observed lower stratospheric water vapour mixing ratios, with the CMIP6 multi-model mean underestimating observed water vapour mixing ratios by ∼ 0.5 ppmv at 70 hPa. CMIP6 multi-model mean stratospheric water vapour mixing ratios in the tropical lower stratosphere have increased by ∼ 0.5 ppmv from the pre-industrial to the present-day period and are projected to increase further by the end of the 21st century. The largest increases (∼ 2 ppmv) are simulated under the future scenarios with the highest assumed forcing pathway (e.g. SSP5-8.5). Tropical lower stratospheric water vapour, and to a lesser extent TCO, shows large variations following explosive volcanic eruptions.

R-Value Measurements Performed on Uranium Targets Irradiated with Fission Spectrum Neutrons FY 2021 for F2019 Project

The separation and characterization of two irradiated uranium targets, a depleted uranium (DU) and a highly enriched uranium (HEU) target, was conducted in April of 2021. The two targets were assembled at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and irradiated using the critical assembly at the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC). Splits of the dissolved targets were received by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) after which the PNNL and LANL teams chemically separated the solutions using independent separation schemes and analyzed the separated fractions for short lived actinides and fission products. Chemical separations at PNNL were traced with stable or radioactive tracers to allow for the determination of chemical yields, analyzing using either inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) or gamma emission analysis (GEA) depending on the nature of the tracer. Several other analytical techniques were used by PNNL including kinetic phosphorescence analysis (KPA) and thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) depending on the analyte’s need. Comparisons were made between current and historical PNNL and LANL, as well as literature values. Overall, there was agreement between the two laboratories for the bulk of analytes, with some notable exceptions such as 111 Ag, and 141,143,144 Ce. Included in these comparisons were the short-lived actinides 237 U, 239 Np, the fission products 89 Sr, 91 Y, 95/97 Zr, 99 Mo, 111 Ag, 115/115 mCd, 136/137 Cs, 140 Ba, 141/143/144 Ce, 147 Nd, 153 Sm, 156 Eu, and 161 Tb, providing both total atoms as well as the R-values. The data presented in this report represents the sixth NCERC irradiation of HEU and DU (FY13, FY14, FY15, FY17, FY18, FY21), and their subsequent separation and analysis.
