Real-time Multi-granular Analytics Framework for HIT Systems

Streaming analytics is the process of ingesting and digesting live data from multiple data sources. In the healthcare domain, as the importance of extracting immediate insights while data are streaming into the system grows, the focus is shifting from batch processing to streaming analytics. With data increasing dramatically at high speeds, many informatics designs have been proposed to adapt healthcare domain into this new environment. In our previous work, we introduced a prototype of health informatics technology (HIT) framework that aims to address challenges in adopting state-of-the-art technologies to enable advanced healthcare analytic tasks in new streaming environments. We recently made major updates to the framework so that anomaly from multiple streaming data sources at different granularity levels can be detected in near real-time. In this paper, we detail the implementation and deployment of the framework in Kubernetes clusters and report its performances when tested on electronic health record (EHR) data of Veterans Affairs.

Computation of graph hitting time moments; Chapel code implementation.

The project that developed this is unclassified, with the mandate to produce open source code. This code computes the hitting time moments of a graph using a linear algebra configuration. The goal of this work is to explore the performance capabilities of the Chapel programming language. Toward that end, we generate random adjacency matrices which represent a random graph. The code can also read in an adjacency matrix from a file. The main computation is the Conjugate Gradient method.SAND2020-12651 M. Heart Shape to Fracture Distance: Characterizing Hydraulic Fracture Propagation before Hits

Estimating the distance from the hydraulic fracture tip to the monitor well can be useful for fracture characterization, well spacing optimization, and preventing parent-child well interference. A heart-shaped signal is referred to as the extensional precursor of a fracture hit recorded by crosswell strain measurements and can serve as a vital tool for such estimation. This study incorporates the 3D displacement discontinuity method (DDM) to understand the impact of fracture geometry and monitor well offset on the heart-shaped signal’s characteristics. Results from numerical simulation and analytical solutions reveal a strong linear correlation between the spatial extent of the heart-shaped signal and the fracture tip distance. This relationship was further developed to predict tip distance using field data from the Hydraulic Fracture Test Site 2 (HFTS2). A reasonable approximation result from field data further validates the methodology. In addition, it is worth noting that the estimation accuracy depends on the ratio between fracture dimension and tip distance. The findings of this study offer a novel approach for real-time monitoring and characterizing hydraulic fracture propagation, which can be further used for well spacing optimization in unconventional and enhanced geothermal system reservoir development, as well as caprock integrity monitoring for carbon sequestration projects.

Document Retrieval and Ranking using Similarity Graph Mean Hitting Times

We present a novel approach to information retrieval and document analysis based on graph analytic methods. Traditional information retrieval methods use a set of terms to define a query that is applied against a document corpus to identify the documents most related to those terms. In contrast, we define a query as a set of documents of interest and apply the query by computing mean hitting times between this set and all other documents on a document similarity graph abstraction of the semantic relationships between all pairs of documents. We present the steps of our approach along with a simple example application illustrating how this approach can be used to find documents related to two or more documents or topics of interest.

Physical Properties of Hilti HIT-RE 500 V3 After Irradiation: Slant Shear, Tensile, Flexural, and Compressive

There are various applications in which epoxy adhesives may be used within hot-cell environments. These epoxies currently see limited use within hot cells since it is known that organics see degradation after small doses even as low as 50 kilogray (kGy). These losses in physical property strengths limit the use of these epoxies to non-structural applications. In modern construction, however, the use of epoxies to bond structural components such as rebar or threaded anchors is becoming increasingly prevalent. To employ these types of materials the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) has begun investigating the specific degradation properties of epoxies for use in structural applications in environments where radiation is present. Hilti HIT-RE 500 V3 is used extensively in new construction and renovation projects across the world. The INL has conducted various tests on this epoxy for low dose environments. These tests include tensile, flexural, compression, and slant shear tests following the American Society for Testing Material International (ASTM) standards D638, D790, D695, and C882/882M respectively. Two sample sets for each test were created where the baseline specimens were not irradiated, and another set was irradiated to an accumulated dose of approximately 50-60 kGy. All the samples were destructively tested and analyzed focusing on the change in physical properties, examples of these tests are shown in Figures 1-4. Tensile testing results indicate a 0.9% loss in maximum load capacity, a 0.5% loss in tensile stress at maximum load, a 1.4% loss in tensile strain at break, and a 15% decrease in modulus of elasticity. Flexural testing results display an increase in all the following: 12% in strain at maximum load, 10% in maximum load capacity, 5% in stress at maximum load, and 3% in young’s modulus. The compressive physical properties after irradiation display a 1% increase in maximum load, a 3% decrease in stress at yield, and a 5% decrease in modulus of elasticity. The maximum compressive stress saw no measurable change after irradiation. The slant shear specimens after irradiation displayed a 2% increase in maximum load capacity and maximum compressive stress. Though a structural analysis would have to be completed as is normal for building design the increases and decreases in the measured physical properties indicate that this material may be used for structural applications in low dose hot-cell environments without adhesive failure.

Tevatron greatest hits

The Tevatron collider led the World energy frontier program in particle physics during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. During this exciting period the standard model of particle physics was in its final stages of development and the search for physics beyond the standard model became one of the main research topics. In this review article we summarize the design and performance of the Tevatron collider and its two detectors, CDF and D0, as well as their evolution. Here, highlights of the Tevatron scientific results are provided, including the discovery of the top quark and measurements of its properties, studies and discoveries of the particles containing heavy quarks, precision studies of the strong and electroweak forces, searches for beyond the standard model particles and interactions, as well as the hunt for the Higgs boson.

Particle hit clustering and identification using point set transformers in liquid argon time projection chambers

Liquid argon time projection chambers are often used in neutrino physics and dark-matter searches because of their high spatial resolution. The images generated by these detectors are extremely sparse, as the energy values detected by most of the detector are equal to 0, meaning that despite their high resolution, most of the detector is unused in a particular interaction. Instead of representing all of the empty detections, the interaction is usually stored as a sparse matrix, a list of detection locations paired with their energy values. Traditional machine learning methods that have been applied to particle reconstruction such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), however, cannot operate over data stored in this way and therefore must have the matrix fully instantiated as a dense matrix. Operating on dense matrices requires a lot of memory and computation time, in contrast to directly operating on the sparse matrix. We propose a machine learning model using a point set neural network that operates over a sparse matrix, greatly improving both processing speed and accuracy over methods that instantiate the dense matrix, as well as over other methods that operate over sparse matrices. Compared to competing state-of-the-art methods, our method improves classification performance by 14%, segmentation performance by more than 22%, while taking 80% less time and using 66% less memory. Compared to state-of-the-art CNN methods, our method improves classification performance by more than 86%, segmentation performance by more than 71%, while reducing runtime by 91% and reducing memory usage by 61%.

Hitting the sweet spot: exploiting HIV-1 glycan shield for induction of broadly neutralizing antibodies

The surface of the HIV-1 Env glycoprotein, the target of neutralizing antibodies, is extensively covered by N-linked glycans that create a glycan shield. Broadly neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs), the primary targets of HIV-1 vaccine design, have to negotiate this glycan shield. Here, we review the barriers and opportunities that the HIV-1 glycan shield presents for vaccine induction of bNAbs.

Hitting the Thermal Target for Leptophilic Dark Matter at Future Lepton Colliders

We study future lepton collider prospects for testing predictive models of leptophilic dark matter (DM) candidates with a thermal origin. We calculate experimental milestones for testing the parameter space compatible with freeze-out and the associated collider signals at past, present, and future facilities. This analysis places new limits on such models by leveraging the utility of lepton colliders. At 𝑒+⁢𝑒− machines, we make projections using precision 𝑍 -pole observables from 𝑒+⁢𝑒−→ℓ+⁢ℓ−+𝐸 signatures at large electron-positron collider and future projections for future circular collider (ee) in these channels. Additionally, a muon collider could also probe new thermal relic parameter space in this scenario via 𝜇+⁢𝜇−→𝑋+𝐸 , where 𝑋 is any easily identifiable standard model object. Collectively, these processes can probe much of the parameter space for which DM direct annihilation to ℓ+⁢ℓ− yields the observed relic density in Higgs-like models with mass-proportional couplings to charged leptons.
