Cross-scale sensing of field-level crop residue cover: Integrating field photos, airborne hyperspectral imaging, and satellite data

Conservation tillage practices can bring benefits to agricultural sustainability. Accurate spatial and temporal resolved information of field-scale crop residue cover, which reflects tillage intensity, is highly valuable for evaluating the outcomes of government conservation programs and voluntary ecosystem service markets, as well as facilitating agroecosystem modeling to quantify cropland biogeochemical processes. Remote sensing has the potential to cost-effectively detect crop residue cover, however, existing regional-scale studies were limited by insufficient ground truth data, scale mismatch between coarse satellite pixels and ground data, and the lack of key spectral data for detecting crop residues. Therefore, this study developed an innovative cross-sensing framework to integrate proximal sensing, airborne hyperspectral imaging, and satellite Earth Observation through deep learning to quantify field-level crop residue cover fractions at the regional scale. Specifically, we have collected intensive ground orthographic photos and conducted airborne hyperspectral surveys at corn and soybean fields of Champaign and nearby counties in Illinois, the heartland of the U.S. Corn Belt. Through semi-automatic labeling aided by ResNet-50 and superpixel image segmentation, we obtained 6719 records of ground residue fractions. With these ground data, we developed the 1-dimensional convolution neural network (CNN) model using airborne hyperspectral reflectance, which has 0.5m spatial resolution and 3–5 nm spectral resolution from 400 to 2400 nm, to predict residue fractions. By applying the CNN model to airborne pixels, we augmented “ground truth” data of crop residues and further combined them with Harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 (HLS) satellite data to quantify regional residue fractions at 30 m resolution. Results show that airborne hyperspectral imagery with CNN can accurately detect residue fractions (R 2 = 0.82, relative RMSE = 11.73%) to effectively generate quasi “ground truth” data to support satellite upscaling to all fields. With independent ground data for testing, we found that the ground-airborne-satellite integrative framework achieved better predictions in estimating crop residue cover (R 2 = 0.67, relative RMSE = 17.53%) than the conventional ground-satellite upscaling (R 2 = 0.22, relative RMSE = 32.09%). Here we also found that the shortwave infrared wavelengths, particularly 2100–2300 nm, are vital for predicting crop residue cover. Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 data have a comparable capability to track residue fractions due to similar shortwave infrared wavelengths. This study highlights the high accuracy of hyperspectral imaging to detect agroecosystem tillage management practices and the advantages of cross-scale sensing to cost-effectively integrate multi-source data to quantify field-level agroecosystem variables across scales.

Apodization Specific Fitting for Improved Resolution, Charge Measurement, and Data Analysis Speed in Charge Detection Mass Spectrometry

Short-time Fourier transforms with short segment lengths are typically used to analyze single ion charge detection mass spectrometry (CDMS) data either to overcome effects of frequency shifts that may occur during the trapping period or to more precisely determine the time at which an ion changes mass or charge, or enters an unstable orbit. The short segment lengths can lead to scalloping loss unless a large number of zero-fills are used, making computational time a significant factor in real-time analysis of data. Apodization specific fitting leads to a 9-fold reduction in computation time compared to zero-filling to a similar extent of accuracy. This makes possible real-time data analysis using a standard desktop computer. Rectangular apodization leads to higher resolution than the more commonly used Gaussian or Hann apodization and makes it possible to separate ions with similar frequencies, a significant advantage for experiments in which the masses of many individual ions are measured simultaneously. Equally important is a >20% increase in S/N obtained with rectangular apodization compared to Gaussian or Hann, which directly translates to a corresponding improvement in accuracy of both charge measurements and ion energy measurements that rely on the amplitudes of the fundamental and harmonic frequencies. Finally, combined with computing the fast Fourier transform in a lower-level language, this fitting procedure eliminates computational barriers and should enable real-time processing of CDMS data on a laptop computer.

Harmonics and Stability Evaluation of Converter-Interfaced Combined Heat and Power Units

Grid integration of medium-sized combined heat and power (CHP) units is challenging due to strict grid codes and conventional generators lack of control flexibility to meet these grid codes. Adding a two-stage ac-dc-ac power electronics interface between the generator and the utility grid will accelerate the interconnection process of CHP units. For the dc-ac stage, a voltage source converter (VSC) has been widely used as a grid-tied inverter because of its fast control and low total harmonics distortion (THD). In this paper, several topologies of generator-side rectifiers for ac-dc power conversion are explored and analyzed. The harmonics impact of various rectifiers on the CHP generator are evaluated. The overall cost of the electrical system, when using various types of rectifiers, is assessed and the VSC back-to-back converter interface configuration is found to be optimal. The overall system stability is also examined using small-signal impedance analysis to assess potential instability issues at the system level.

Lanthanide thioborates, an emerging class of nonlinear optical materials, efficiently synthesized using the boron–chalcogen mixture method

Here, the Boron–Chalcogen Mixture method was used to obtain single crystals of the previously extremely difficult to synthesize lanthanide orthothioborates to investigate their structures and their structurally connected optical behavior, such as second harmonic generation. Using a combined halide and polychalcogenide flux, the BCM method yielded single crystals of LnBS 3 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd), which are isostructural and crystallize in the non-centrosymmetric space group, Pna2 1 . Second harmonic generation measurements confirmed the expectation that LaBS 3 would exhibit a strong SHG response, measured at 1.5 × KDP.

Evaluation of Torque-Dense Electric Machine Technology for Off-Highway Vehicle Electrification

Electrification of off-highway vehicles offers the benefits of improved energy efficiency, enhanced control, and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. However, progress towards electrification has been limited by the low torque density (30 kNm/m 3 ) of conventional electric machines compared to mobile hydraulic machines (up to approximately 1000 kNm/m 3 ). This paper reviews emerging variants of electric machines that offer a step improvement in torque density and potential pathway to enable electrified off-highway vehicles. First, sizing approaches for electric and hydraulic machines are developed, and torque-dense electric machines reviewed in literature are compared to commercial hydraulic machines to identify design trends in terms of speed, torque density, and power density. Next, key metrics are identified for the electric machine, based on which the following four emerging electric machine variants that promise to improve torque density are reviewed: i) multi-harmonic machines injection, ii) combined radial-axial flux machines, iii) magnetic gears, and iv) magnetically-geared machines. Here, the findings from this review show that these new electric machines can achieve upwards of 300% improvement in electric machine torque density, with several designs exceeding 100 kNm/m 3 , making them worthy candidates for further research to bridge the torque density gap with hydraulic machines.

Axial pistons provide a robust simple solution for generating rotation; Rotational pistons provide increased torque generation as the torque generated is proportional to motor length. Since downhole drills are long, a high-torque motor can be produced using this method.

FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 : Hidden Gems of Ternary Tetrel Pnictides with Outstanding Nonlinear Optical Properties

Metal silicon phosphides have shown promise as nonlinear optical materials. To be practically useful and cheap, earth-abundant 3d transition metals are preferred over their scarcer and more expensive 4d and 5d counterparts. Here, we developed a synthetic method to produce polycrystalline bulk powders and millimeter-sized single crystals of ternary compounds FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 . Both studied compounds have noncentrosymmetric and chiral crystal structures with ordered Si/P arrangements as was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR. Despite the presence of the transition metal, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 are semiconductors with direct band gaps of 1.3 and 1.6 eV, respectively, indicating low-spin d 6 electronic configuration for octahedral Fe 2+ and Co 3+ . Relative to reported sulfide materials, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 small band gap semiconductors demonstrate an outstanding combination of second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity and laser damage threshold (LDT). Both studied materials are phase-matchable with a 2.09 μm laser and not only exhibit 2.5–3.0 times stronger SHG signal than that of the state-of-the-art AgGaS 2 standard but also demonstrate an LDT response of 2.3–2.5 times higher than that of AgGaS 2 (at 1.09 μm laser with a pulse width of 10 ns)-which is unprecedented for small band gap semiconductors.

Quantum fluctuations lead to glassy electron dynamics in the good metal regime of electron doped KTaO 3

One of the central challenges in condensed matter physics is to comprehend systems that have strong disorder and strong interactions. In the strongly localized regime, their subtle competition leads to glassy electron dynamics which ceases to exist well before the insulator-to-metal transition is approached as a function of doping. Here, we report on the discovery of glassy electron dynamics deep inside the good metal regime of an electron-doped quantum paraelectric system: KTaO 3 . We reveal that upon excitation of electrons from defect states to the conduction band, the excess injected carriers in the conduction band relax in a stretched exponential manner with a large relaxation time, and the system evinces simple aging phenomena—a telltale sign of glassy dynamics. Most significantly, we observe a critical slowing down of carrier dynamics below 35 K, concomitant with the onset of quantum paraelectricity in the undoped KTaO 3 . Our combined investigation using second harmonic generation technique, density functional theory and phenomenological modeling demonstrates quantum fluctuation-stabilized soft polar modes as the impetus for the glassy behavior. This study addresses one of the most fundamental questions regarding the potential promotion of glassiness by quantum fluctuations and opens a route for exploring glassy dynamics of electrons in a well-delocalized regime.

Synthesis, crystal and electronic structures, linear and nonlinear optical properties, and photocurrent response of oxyhalides CeHaVIO 4 (Ha = Cl, Br; VI = Mo, W)

Four heteroanionic oxyhalides, CeClMoO 4 , CeBrMoO 4 , CeClWO 4 , and CeBrWO 4 , have been studied as multifunctional materials, which show a combination of good second harmonic generation (SHG) response and photocurrent signals. Millimeter-sized CeHaVIO 4 (Ha = Cl, Br; VI = Mo, W) crystals were grown by halide salt flux. The crystal structure of CeHaVIO 4 crystals was accurately determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. CeClMoO 4 , CeBrMoO 4 , and CeBrWO 4 are isostructural to each other, and crystallize in the acentric LaBrMoO 4 structure type. CeClWO 4 crystallizes in a new structure type with unit cell parameters of a = 19.6059(2) Å, b = 5.89450(10) Å, c = 7.80090(10) Å, and β = 101.4746(8)°. The bandgaps of CeHaVIO 4 fall into the range of 2.8(1)–3.1(1) eV, which are much smaller than those of isotypic LaHaVIO 4 (Ha = Cl, Br; VI = Mo, W) in the range of 3.9(1)–4.3(1) eV. The narrowing of bandgaps in CeHaVIO 4 originates from the presence of partially filled 4f orbitals of cerium atoms, which was confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The moderate bandgaps make CeHaVIO 4 suitable for infrared nonlinear optical (IR NLO) applications. CeBrMoO 4 and CeBrWO 4 exhibit moderate SHG responses of 0.58× AGS and 0.46× AGS, respectively, and are both type-I phase-matching materials. Moderate SHG response, easy growth of crystals, high ambient stability, and type-I phase-matching behavior make CeBrMoO 4 and CeBrWO 4 great materials for IR NLO applications. CeHaVIO 4 films also exhibited good photocurrent response upon light radiation. Furthermore, this work demonstrates the rich structural chemistry of the REHaVIO 4 (RE = Y, La–Lu; Ha = Cl, Br; VI = Mo, W) family and the potential presence of more multifunctional materials.

MolSym : A Python package for handling symmetry in molecular quantum chemistry

A consideration of the point group symmetry of molecules is often advantageous from a computational efficiency standpoint and sometimes necessary for the correct treatment of chemical physics problems. Many modern electronic structure software packages include a treatment of symmetry, but these are sometimes incomplete or unusable outside of that program’s environment. Therefore, we have developed the MolSym package for handling molecular symmetry and its associated functionalities to provide a platform for including symmetry in the implementation and development of other methods. Features include point group detection, molecule symmetrization, arbitrary generation of symmetry element sets and character tables, and symmetry adapted linear combinations of real spherical harmonic basis functions, Cartesian displacement coordinates, and internal coordinates. We present some of the advantages of using molecular symmetry as achieved by MolSym, particularly with respect to Hartree–Fock theory, and the reduction of finite difference displacements in gradient/Hessian computations. Furthermore, this package is designed to be easily integrated into other software development efforts and may be extended to further symmetry applications.

The anomaly of the CMB power with the latest Planck data

Abstract The lack of power anomaly is an unexpected feature observed at large angular scales in the maps of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) produced by the COBE, WMAP andPlancksatellites. This signature, which consists in a missing of power with respect to that predicted by the ΛCDM model, might hint at a new cosmological phase before the standard inflationary era.The main point of this paper is taking into account the latestPlanckpolarisation data to investigate how the CMB polarisation improves the understanding of this feature. With this aim, we apply to the latestPlanckdata, both PR3 (2018) and PR4 (2020) releases, a new class of estimators capable of evaluating this anomaly by considering temperature and polarisation data both separately and in a jointly way. This is the first time that the PR4 dataset has been used to study this anomaly. To critically evaluate this feature, taking into account the residuals of known systematic effects present in thePlanckdatasets, we analyse the cleaned CMB maps using different combinations of sky masks, harmonic range and binning on the CMB multipoles. Our analysis shows that the estimator based only on temperature data confirms the presence of a lack of power with a lower-tail-probability (LTP), depending on the component separation method, ≤ 0.33% and ≤ 1.76% for PR3 and PR4, respectively. To our knowledge, the LTP≤ 0.33% for the PR3 dataset is the lowest one present in the literature obtained fromPlanck2018 data, considering thePlanckconfidence mask. We find significant differences between these two datasets when polarisation is taken into account most likely due to a different level of systematics. Especially, the analysis with PR3 data, unlike that with PR4, seems to point towards a lack of power at large scales also for polarisation. Moreover, we also show that for the PR3 dataset the inclusion of the subdominant polarisation information provides estimates that are less likely accepted in a ΛCDM cosmological model than the only-temperature analysis over the entire harmonic-range considered. In particular, at ℓ max = 26, we found that no simulation has a value as low as the data for all the pipelines.

Physics-inspired spatiotemporal-graph AI ensemble for the detection of higher order wave mode signals of spinning binary black hole mergers

We present a new class of AI models for the detection of quasi-circular, spinning, non-precessing binary black hole mergers whose waveforms include the higher order gravitational wave modes ($\ell$, |m|) = {(2,2), (2,1), (3,3), (3,2), (4,4)}, and mode mixing effects in the $\ell$ = 3, |m| = 2 harmonics. These AI models combine hybrid dilated convolution neural networks to accurately model both short- and long-range temporal sequential information of gravitational waves; and graph neural networks to capture spatial correlations among gravitational wave observatories to consistently describe and identify the presence of a signal in a three detector network encompassing the Advanced LIGO and Virgo detectors. We first trained these spatiotemporal-graph AI models using synthetic noise, using 1.2 million modeled waveforms to densely sample this signal manifold, within 1.7 h using 256 NVIDIA A100 GPUs in the Polaris supercomputer at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility. This distributed training approach exhibited optimal classification performance, and strong scaling up to 512 NVIDIA A100 GPUs. With these AI ensembles we processed data from a three detector network, and found that an ensemble of 4 AI models achieves state-of-the-art performance for signal detection, and reports two misclassifications for every decade of searched data. We distributed AI inference over 128 GPUs in the Polaris supercomputer and 128 nodes in the Theta supercomputer, and completed the processing of a decade of gravitational wave data from a three detector network within 3.5 h. Finally, we fine-tuned these AI ensembles to process the entire month of February 2020, which is part of the O3b LIGO/Virgo observation run, and found 6 gravitational waves, concurrently identified in Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo data, and zero false positives. This analysis was completed in one hour using one NVIDIA A100 GPU.

Sn-modified BaTiO 3 thin film with enhanced polarization

Hybrid molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) growth of Sn-modified BaTiO 3 films was realized with varying domain structures and crystal symmetries across the entire composition space. Macroscopic and microscopic structures and the crystal symmetry of these thin films were determined using a combination of optical second harmonic generation (SHG) polarimetry and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). SHG polarimetry revealed a variation in the global crystal symmetry of the films from tetragonal (P4mm) to cubic (PM3¯m) across the composition range, x = 0 to 1 in BaTi 1–x Sn x O 3 (BTSO). STEM imaging shows that the long-range polar order observed when the Sn content is low (x = 0.09) transformed to a short-range polar order as the Sn content increased (x = 0.48). Consistent with atomic displacement measurements from STEM, the largest polarization was obtained at the lowest Sn content of x = 0.09 in Sn-modified BaTiO 3 as determined by SHG. Furthermore, these results agree with recent bulk ceramic reports and further identify this material system as a potential replacement for Pb-containing relaxor-based thin film devices.

CMB-S4: Foreground-cleaning Pipeline Comparison for Measuring Primordial Gravitational Waves

We compare multiple foreground-cleaning pipelines for estimating the tensor-to-scalar ratio, r, using simulated maps of the planned CMB-S4 experiment within the context of the South Pole Deep Patch. To evaluate robustness, we analyze bias and uncertainty on r across various foreground suites using map-based simulations. The foreground-cleaning methods include: a parametric maximum likelihood approach applied to auto- and cross-power spectra between frequency maps; a map-based parametric maximum-likelihood method; and a harmonic-space internal linear combination using frequency maps. We summarize the conceptual basis of each method to highlight their similarities and differences. To better probe the impact of foreground residuals, we implement an iterative internal delensing step, leveraging a map-based pipeline to generate a lensing B-mode template from the large aperture telescope frequency maps. Our results show that the performance of the three approaches is comparable for simple and intermediate-complexity foregrounds, with σ(r) ranging from 3–5 ×10 −4 . However, biases at the 1σ–2σ level appear when analyzing more complex forms of foreground emission. By extending the baseline pipelines to marginalize over foreground residuals, we demonstrate that contamination can be reduced to within statistical uncertainties, albeit with a pipeline-dependent impact on σ(r), which translates to a detection significance between 2σ and 4σ for an input value of r = 0.003. These findings suggest varying levels of maturity among the tested pipelines, with the auto- and cross-spectra-based approach demonstrating the best stability and overall performance. Moreover, given the extremely low noise levels, mutual validation of independent foreground-cleaning pipelines is essential to ensure the robustness of any potential detection.

Subharmonic Shapiro steps in depinning dynamics of a two-dimensional solid dusty plasma modulated by one-dimensional nonlinear deformed periodic substrates

Langevin dynamical simulations are performed to investigate the depinning dynamics of a two-dimensional (2D) solid dusty plasma, which is modulated by one-dimensional (1D) nonlinear deformed periodic substrates, and also driven by the combination of the DC and AC forces. As the DC driving force increases gradually, pronounced subharmonic and harmonic Shapiro steps are discovered under the combined modulation of the deformed substrate and the external AC drive. Here, these observed subharmonic and harmonic Shapiro steps are attributed to the dynamic mode locking. The data analysis results indicate that the nonlinear deformed substrate strongly influences these subharmonic Shapiro steps, which can be accurately diagnosed using the fraction of sixfold coordinated particles. Furthermore, the diagnostic of the kinetic temperature clearly indicates the difference between harmonic and subharmonic Shapiro steps, i.e., the particle motion is slightly less synchronized at subharmonic Shapiro steps, caused by the unstable locations of the deformed substrate.

Efficient computation of N -point correlation functions in D dimensions

We present efficient algorithms for computing the N-point correlation functions (NPCFs) of random fields in arbitrary D-dimensional homogeneous and isotropic spaces. Such statistics appear throughout the physical sciences and provide a natural tool to describe stochastic processes. Typically, algorithms for computing the NPCF components have $\mathscr O$(n N ) complexity (for a dataset containing n particles); their application is thus computationally infeasible unless N is small. By projecting the statistic onto a suitably defined angular basis, we show that the estimators can be written in a separable form, with complexity $\mathscr O$(n 2 ) or $\mathscr O$(n g log n g ) if evaluated using a Fast Fourier Transform on a grid of size n g . Our decomposition is built upon the D-dimensional hyperspherical harmonics; these form a complete basis on the (D – 1) sphere and are intrinsically related to angular momentum operators. Concatenation of (N – 1) such harmonics gives states of definite combined angular momentum, forming a natural separable basis for the NPCF. As N and D grow, the number of basis components quickly becomes large, providing a practical limitation to this (and all other) approaches: However, the dimensionality is greatly reduced in the presence of symmetries; for example, isotropic correlation functions require only states of zero combined angular momentum. We provide a Julia package implementing our estimators and show how they can be applied to a variety of scenarios within cosmology and fluid dynamics. The efficiency of such estimators will allow higher-order correlators to become a standard tool in the analysis of random fields.

Colossal Strain Tuning of Ferroelectric Transitions in KNbO 3 Thin Films

Strong coupling between polarization ( P ) and strain (ɛ) in ferroelectric complex oxides offers unique opportunities to dramatically tune their properties. Here colossal strain tuning of ferroelectricity in epitaxial KNbO 3 thin films grown by sub‐oxide molecular beam epitaxy is demonstrated. While bulk KNbO 3 exhibits three ferroelectric transitions and a Curie temperature ( T c ) of ≈676 K, phase‐field modeling predicts that a biaxial strain of as little as −0.6% pushes its T c > 975 K, its decomposition temperature in air, and for −1.4% strain, to T c > 1325 K, its melting point. Furthermore, a strain of −1.5% can stabilize a single phase throughout the entire temperature range of its stability. A combination of temperature‐dependent second harmonic generation measurements, synchrotron‐based X‐ray reciprocal space mapping, ferroelectric measurements, and transmission electron microscopy reveal a single tetragonal phase from 10 K to 975 K, an enhancement of ≈46% in the tetragonal phase remanent polarization ( P r ), and a ≈200% enhancement in its optical second harmonic generation coefficients over bulk values. These properties in a lead‐free system, but with properties comparable or superior to lead‐based systems, make it an attractive candidate for applications ranging from high‐temperature ferroelectric memory to cryogenic temperature quantum computing.
