Joint Sample Analyses of Nuclear Forensic Materials Provided by the Republic of Kazakhstan: U. S. Laboratory Results

This document serves as an interim report to summarize sample analyses performed by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) on a series of five nuclear forensics samples provided by the Institute of Nuclear Physics (INP) in the Republic of Kazakhstan. The sample set contains four uranium oxide powders and one low-enriched uranium fuel pellet. The samples were provided as part of a broader collaboration that involved a set of joint sample analyses conducted by INP and the US National Laboratories. The joint analyses are being conducted using well-developed analytical plans. These activities are designed to support the advancement of nuclear forensic science and capacity building in all three institutes in both countries. This report builds upon an earlier preliminary summary of the joint interactions and will be augmented by a final report. The final report will summarize the results and value of all sample analyses performed at the three institutes (INP, LLNL, and LANL). The final report will also provide an intercomparison of the results, analytical methods and best practices employed, as well as outline future collaborative nuclear forensics activities that are being developed in the Kazakhstan region.

A comparative analysis of numerical approaches for the description of gas flow in clay-based repository systems: From a laboratory to a large-scale gas injection test

There is nowadays a consensus among many countries that geological disposal is a favourable solution for the long-term management. Although different host formations and different barrier systems are under consideration around the world, clay-based materials form an important component for waste isolation in most national programmes. Hence, a good comprehension of the effect of gas flow on the hydro-mechanical behaviour of clay-based soils is essential, both at laboratory and field scale. Task B under the international cooperative project DECOVALEX-2023 has recently shown that, after some enhancement, models can be employed to reproduce laboratory scale tests, even with different sample geometries 37 . However, further work is required to understand whether they can be applied to simulate a large-scale experiment. Up-scaling of models for the advective transport of gas through clay-based low permeable material presents a number of problems related to the difficulty in obtaining consistent hydrogeological parameters and constitutive relationships at both laboratory and field scale. Based on a unique dataset from a large-scale gas injection test (Lasgit) performed at the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory (Sweden), Task B within DECOVALEX-2023 has explored the refinement of these numerical strategies applied to the simulation of gas flow. Work performed within the task reveals that codes do not need to be substantially modified from the laboratory models to reproduce full-scale tests: indeed, model parameters calibrated and validated at laboratory scale have been applied to predict field scale gas flow at Lasgit, including peak gas pressure and injected cumulative gas volume. By means of (1) the introduction of interfaces between blocks to reflect the experimental configuration and the (2) adjustment of some parameters (e.g., higher permeability), the updated models are able to represent most of the key features observed in the experimental data, even at a large scale.

Results from a multi-laboratory ocean metaproteomic intercomparison: effects of LC-MS acquisition and data analysis procedures

Metaproteomics is an increasingly popular methodology that provides information regarding the metabolic functions of specific microbial taxa and has potential for contributing to ocean ecology and biogeochemical studies. A blinded multi-laboratory intercomparison was conducted to assess comparability and reproducibility of taxonomic and functional results and their sensitivity to methodological variables. Euphotic zone samples from the Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study (BATS) in the North Atlantic Ocean collected by in situ pumps and the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) Clio were distributed with a paired metagenome, and one-dimensional (1D) liquid chromatographic data-dependent acquisition mass spectrometry analysis was stipulated. Analysis of mass spectra from seven laboratories through a common bioinformatic pipeline identified a shared set of 1056 proteins from 1395 shared peptide constituents. Quantitative analyses showed good reproducibility: pairwise regressions of spectral counts between laboratories yielded R 2 values averaged 0.62±0.11, and a Sørensen similarity analysis of the top 1000 proteins revealed 70 %–80 % similarity between laboratory groups. Taxonomic and functional assignments showed good coherence between technical replicates and different laboratories. A bioinformatic intercomparison study, involving 10 laboratories using eight software packages, successfully identified thousands of peptides within the complex metaproteomic datasets, demonstrating the utility of these software tools for ocean metaproteomic research. Lessons learned and potential improvements in methods were described. Future efforts could examine reproducibility in deeper metaproteomes, examine accuracy in targeted absolute quantitation analyses, and develop standards for data output formats to improve data interoperability. Together, these results demonstrate the reproducibility of metaproteomic analyses and their suitability for microbial oceanography research, including integration into global-scale ocean surveys and ocean biogeochemical models.

Impedance Based Fixture Neutralization (FINE) Method to Replicate Field Environments in Laboratory Settings

Test article vibration test responses will vary from one test laboratory to another due to differences in shaker and fixture dynamic characteristics. This is also seen between the field and laboratory due to the differing dynamic characteristics between field assembly loading and boundary conditions compared to the laboratory configuration. This work introduces a technique called Impedance Fixture Neutralization which customizes input forces to cause consistent responses for the Device Under Test across different vibration testing conditions. The customized force neutralizes the dynamic variations between configurations for the Device Under Test. The device responses can be replicated in several situations: when using a different fixture with the same attachment points, when the test article mounting location on the fixture changes, when the force location changes, or any combination of these situations. Impedance Fixture Neutralization uses the uncoupled dynamic characteristics of the test article and excitation fixtures to customize the input thereby causing the same test article responses between two mounting configurations (either field to laboratory or two different laboratory configurations). The application of the technique is shown using an analytical model of a two-beam system and analytically using experimental FRFs from plate and frame component hardware characterization tests. In both cases a device under test is attached to two test fixtures wherein the dynamic differences in the configurations are neutralized.

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Glenn T. Seaborg Institute: 2025 highlights

The Glenn T. Seaborg Institute (GTSI) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) serves as a dedicated hub for advancing actinide R&D, aimed at strengthening the United States’ capabilities in actinide science. With a focus on medical, industrial, and national security applications, the ORNL GTSI seeks to foster the next generation of scientists and engineers. Collaborating closely with corresponding Seaborg Institutes at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), and Idaho National Laboratory, the ORNL GTSI leverages its unique strengths. These include unparalleled expertise in isotope production, handling of rare isotopes, and leadership in neutron and computational sciences. Notably, the ORNL GTSI is positioned as the nation’s cornerstone for actinide R&D, capitalizing on the exceptional capabilities of the High Flux Isotope Reactor—the premier reactor for isotope production—and the Hazard Category 2 Radiochemical Engineering Development Center, which supports advanced production, processing, and applications research. Furthermore, the GTSI is committed to serving as a national center of excellence for training across all levels of actinide science education. This report provides an overview of the activities, milestones, and accomplishments of the ORNL GTSI over the past year.

Solar Radiation Research Laboratory (SRRL) Core Project Final Report: Fiscal Years 2022-2024

The Solar Radiation Research Laboratory (SRRL) at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) is a world-leading solar calibration and measurement facility and maintains and disseminates the World Radiation Reference (essentially the W/m2) for the United States that is essential for traceable and accurate measurements of solar radiation at all solar generation facilities. SRRL operates two calibration facilities that meet International Standards Organization-17025 (ISO-17025) standards and provide unique high-quality calibrations to NREL and other U.S. Department of Energy laboratories. The Baseline Measurement System (BMS) at SRRL provides a high-quality record of solar irradiance and surface meteorological conditions. SRRL capabilities are used to develop (1) improved methods for the calibration of solar radiometers; (2) new standards through the ISO, the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the American Standards for Testing of Materials (ASTM) International; (c) solar radiation and meteorological models; and (d) advanced instrumentation and methods for operating solar measurement stations. The SRRL datasets are also critical for the validation of new models and datasets, such as the National Solar Radiation Database (NSRDB). The research and development of solar radiation measurement systems and resource modeling techniques are essential for advancing the scientific basis for producing reliable resource data. Specifically, the spatial, temporal, and spectral (wavelength dependency) characteristics of the solar resource are required in several different time frames for various project phases.

Closing the Accuracy Gap in Tandem Photovoltaic Testing: An Accessible and Efficient Spectral Tuning Method Using LED-Based Simulators for Research Laboratories and Industry

Accurate performance calibration of multijunction (MJ) solar cells is critical for advancing this technology toward large-scale terrestrial application, yet existing testing methods developed by photovoltaics calibration laboratories remain prohibitively complex and resource intensive for most research laboratories. Current approaches rely on expensive multisource simulators and/or intricate spectral tuning algorithms, limiting accessibility and hindering standardized comparisons of emerging MJ technologies such as perovskite-based tandems. This paper introduces a streamlined spectral irradiance adjustment method for light-emitting diode (LED)-based solar simulators, which are increasingly adopted in the photovoltaics community due to their versatility and cost-effectiveness. The method we present bins LED channels into groups based on the number of junctions of the MJ photovoltaic device under test (DUT) and their corresponding band gaps and incorporates an automated tuning algorithm that eliminates the need to adjust each channel’s irradiance individually. This tuning algorithm requires the relative spectral responsivities of both the DUT and a broadband reference cell, as well as a calibrated spectroradiometer. Measurement validation across various MJ devices, including III-V and perovskite/silicon tandems, demonstrates excellent agreement within 1% with well-established xenon-tungsten multisource simulators and associated tuning algorithms. By enabling precise spectral tuning with readily available equipment and a simple tuning algorithm, our approach bridges the measurement accuracy gap between research laboratories and accredited testing facilities, fostering more reliable device comparisons and accelerating the translation of MJ technologies into real-world energy systems.

Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory Annual Site Environmental Report for Calendar Year 2024

This report provides the US Department of Energy (DOE) and the public with information on the level of radioactive and non-radioactive pollutants (if any) that are added to the environment as a result of Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory’s (PPPL) operations. This report fulfills the annual public reporting requirements of DOE Order 231.1B. The results of PPPL’s 2024 environmental surveillance and monitoring program are presented and discussed. The report also summarizes environmental initiatives, assessments, and community involvement programs that were undertaken in 2024. PPPL has engaged in fusion energy research since 1951 and at its current locations since 1958. The Laboratory’s mission is to develop the scientific knowledge and advanced engineering to enable fusion to power the US and the world, and to develop the understanding of plasmas from the nano- to the astrophysical scale. PPPL’s primary experiment, the National Spherical Torus Experiment-Upgrade (NSTX-U) is a collaboration among national laboratories, universities, and national and international research institutions and is a major element in the US Fusion Energy Sciences Program. Its design tests the physics principles of spherical torus (ST) plasmas, playing an important role in the development of smaller, more economical fusion reactors. Due to previous operational issues, NSTX-U did not operate in 2024. PPPL is engaged in a project to replace key NSTX-U components and systems to enable the operation of this international magnetic fusion user facility. In 2024, PPPL’s radiological environmental monitoring program measured tritium in the air at onsite sampling stations. Using highly sensitive air monitors, PPPL is capable of detecting small changes in the ambient levels of tritium. The operation of monitors located on D-site is used to demonstrate compliance with the National Emission Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAPs) regulations. Also included in PPPL’s radiological environmental monitoring program, are water monitoring – ground, surface, and waste waters. PPPL’s radiological monitoring program characterized the background levels of tritium in the environment and those data are presented in this report. Ground water monitoring continued under New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s (NJDEP) Site Remediation Program regulations. PPPL monitored for nonradiological contaminants, mainly volatile organic compounds (components of common degreasing solvents). In 2024, PPPL complied with permit limits for surface water and sanitary wastewater discharges. PPPL was honored with an award for EPEAT-certified electronics purchasing from the Global Electronics Council on July 25, 2024.

Algorithm-guided experimentation for autonomous AI systems in self-driving laboratories

This presentation summarizes our work in the PrOMMiS project on benchmarking of data-driven optimization algorithms and their applications in self-driving laboratories. This work supports the broader project goal of accelerating the identification of promising separation methods and operating conditions for critical minerals separation processes. We present a systematic benchmarking study of 42 data-driven optimization algorithms on a broad collection of 502 test problems. The results identify BAM, GLCCLUSTER, and MULTIMIN as the most effective optimization solvers, with BAM showing the highest overall performance and solving more than 80% of the benchmark problems. The study also shows that no single solver consistently outperforms the others across all problem types, indicating that our future laboratory applications may benefit from using a small set of strong solvers rather than relying on a single method. The presentation also illustrates an in-silico chemical reactor case study showing that data-driven optimization methods can guide autonomous experimentation in a self-driving laboratory and identify optimal operating conditions within a small number of experiments. Overall, the results provide a basis for selecting efficient optimization methods and demonstrate the practical use of data-driven optimization in self-driving laboratory workflows.

Optimized manufacturing process for multilayer two-dimensional focusing mirrors in laboratory X-ray applications

Recent advances in laboratory X-ray applications require high-performance optical components that achieve exceptional imaging resolution and beam uniformity within compact experimental setups. Montel mirrors have become a preferred solution due to their unique dual-reflection focusing mechanism and a space-efficient design. Here, in this study, we present an effective manufacturing process for producing Montel mirrors tailored to focus laboratory X-ray beams. The mirrors were fabricated from single-crystal silicon substrates, chosen for their high mechanical stability and compatibility with precision polishing techniques. Our approach begins with the integration of a deterministic chemo-mechanical polishing (CMP)-based pre-shaping step followed by ion beam figuring (IBF), significantly improving manufacturing efficiency. Subsequently, our custom-developed advanced metrology and IBF techniques were employed for fabricating an off-axis, elliptical cylinder Montel mirror system with a 6-mrad total slope, with stringent optical specifications. While post-IBF processes, including multilayer coating, dicing, and gluing, introduced minor surface errors, yet their impact on performance remained negligible. The Montel mirrors manufactured with the optimized process exhibited significantly improved beam uniformity and a reduced focal spot size. These findings validate our approach as a viable solution for high-precision Montel mirror fabrication and facilitate further advancements in laboratory X-ray applications.

Commissioning of Extended Electron Beam Ion Source at Brookhaven National Laboratory

Here, the Extended Electron Beam Ion Source (EEBIS) has been installed and commissioned at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) hadron accelerator complex in the spring of 2023. EEBIS has replaced its predecessor, RhicEBIS, which provided ions for BNL hadron facilities for over a decade since 2009. The motivations for the source upgrade are to provide higher intensities of the Au 32+ ion beam for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) and to provide of an intense source of polarized 3 He 2+ ions for the future Electron Ion Collider (EIC) at BNL. EEBIS is and will continue to be the primary source for a variety of different ion species for the NASA Space Radiation Laboratory (NSRL) at BNL. EEBIS utilizes two identical, two-meter-long unshielded 5T warm bore superconducting solenoids, and it is operated with electron beam current up to 10 A, providing a high-capacity ion traps to fulfill the requirement for high intensity ion beams. The upstream solenoid contains a “short ion trap” with a length of 95 cm, while the “long ion trap” with a length of 178 cm is located inside the downstream solenoid bore. The main features of EEBIS are: * A Gas injection and ionization cell equipped with a Lorenz pulse valve * High-capacity ZAO non-evaporable getter (NEG) custom linear pumping units * In situ apparatus for pumping speed measurements to monitor NEG activation and saturation * “External drift tube” construction with differential pumping stages to provide space for Lorentz pulse valve and 3 He high-field polarization cell * A Ba oxide electron gun cathode. The design of EEBIS as well as the results of its commissioning and first-year operation are presented and discussed.

WHONDRS laboratory time series moisture manipulative experiment from soil core layers across eastern contiguous US: time series aerobic respiration, geochemistry, and aggregates

This dataset supports a broader study examining the effects of wetting and drying on soil layers across the eastern contiguous United States (CONUS). The dataset provides data generated from a laboratory moisture manipulation experiment. The contents include time series aerobic respiration and moisture; dissolved oxygen; sediment geochemistry data; and field metadata. Samples were collected as part of a collaboration between WHONDRS (Worldwide Hydrobiogeochemistry Observation Network for Dynamic River Systems; https://whondrs.pnnl.gov) and MONet (Molecular Observation Network; https://www.emsl.pnnl.gov/monet). The field samples (soil cores) were labeled as MEL_##_COR and subsequent subsamples begin with MEL_##. Additional subsamples were taken for the laboratory experiment and were labeled as EL_##. The labels from the MEL field samples and the EL subsamples can be mapped directly based on the digits following the prefix and underscore (i.e., EL_01 is a subsample from MEL_01).
