Solidification study of some Ni- and Co-base alloys

An ongoing research program aims to characterize the solidification of several Ni- and Co-based commercial wrought type alloys. The techniques used and the data items sought are: (1) thermal analysis, liquidus, nonequilibrium solidus as a function of cooling rate, secondary reactions temperatures, incipient melting, progress of solidification as a function of temperature; (2) optical metallography, characteristic structures and secondary dendrite arm spacing as a function of cooling rate; (3) X-ray diffraction, identification of precipitates; and (4) SEM/EDAX, measure of microsegregation.

Solidification of undercooled metals

The present investigation is concerned with the subject of undercooling (i.e., supercooling) in the case of metal alloys, taking into account the effects of undercooling on microstructure and microsegregation in alloys which solidify in a crystalline manner. Techniques for obtaining a large degree of undercooling are discussed. These techniques make it possible to eliminate heterogeneous nucleants from the melt and to remove container nucleation effects. The nucleation behavior of small metal droplets is considered along with the formation of a dispersion of fine droplets in a suitable inert medium, the mixing of fine metal powders with glass powder, and the levitation melting technique. Attention is given to solidification with rapid interface velocity, aspects of dendritic morphology, and thermal measurements during solidification of undercooled droplets.

Superalloy microstructural variations induced by gravity level during directional solidification

The Ni-base superalloy MAR-M246 (Hf) was directionally solidified during low gravity maneuvers aboard a NASA KC-135 aircraft. Gravity force variations during this process yielded a concomitant variation in microstructure and microsegregation. Secondary dendrite arm spacings are noted to be larger in the low-g portion; this, in turn, decreases the extent of interdendritic segregation. The amount of Hf in both the carbides and interdendritic eutectic increases as the gravity force diminishes. Fewer carbides are present in the low-g regions.

The Development and Prevention of Channel Segregation During Alloy Solidification

During alloy solidification, interdendritic microsegregation causes density differences between entrapped liquid and bulk liquid which provides a driving force for convection. One of the consequences of this effect is the formation of long, nearly vertical liquid channels, rich in solute, flowing through the solid-liquid mushy zone somewhat as a river and tributary system. In ingot castings where the heat flow is vertically downwards and the solute less dense than the solute the convective flow is antiparallel with the flow caused by contraction on freezing. Identification of the mechanisms involved in these two problems is discussed. It is known that certain types of bulk liquid movements can inhibit channel development and the mechanism by which they do so are examined.

Solidification Fundamentals

The fundamental aspects of a variety of solidification phenomena were studied, taking advantage of the unique opportunities offered by the microgravity environment of space. Containerless processing and an understanding of the role of fluids induced by gravitational effects are the two major objectives justifying an experimental program in reduced gravity. The solidification phenomena which are likely to benefit are: macro and microsegregation, columnar-equiaxed transition, pore formation, and undercooling.

Undercooled and rapidly quenched Ni-Mo alloys

Hypoeutectic, eutectic, and hypereutectic nickel-molybdenum alloys were rapidly solidified by both bulk undercooling and melt spinning techniques. Alloys were undercooled in both electromagnetic levitation and differential thermal analysis equipment. The rate of recalescence depended upon the degree of initial undercooling and the nature (faceted or nonfaceted) of the primary nucleating phase. Alloy melts were observed to undercool more in the presence of primary Beta (NiMo intermetallic) phase than in gamma (fcc solid solution) phase. Melt spinning resulted in an extension of molybdenum solid solubility in gamma nickel, from 28 to 37.5 at % Mo. Although the microstructures observed by undercooling and melt spinning were similar the microsegregation pattern across the gamma dendries was different. The range of microstructures evolved was analyzed in terms of the nature of the primary phase to nucleate, its subsequent dendritic growth, coarsening and fragmentation, and final solidification of interfenderitic liquid.

Defects in nickel-base superalloys

The presence of substantial amounts of the sigma phase in Ni-base superalloys can drastically reduce the alloy's stress rupture life. No predictive system exists which is entirely successful in anticipating the formation of sigma, mu, and similar phases in new and substantially different alloys. Freckles are defects due to the segregation of elements in quantities that can lead to phase precipitation, and are caused by gravity-driven fluid motion that yields microsegregation in the ingots typically used in the fabrication of structures based on these alloys. Also noted are the effects of porosity and grain boundaries on superalloy mechanical properties.

Cellular microstructure of chill block melt spun Ni-Mo alloys

Chill block melt spun ribbons of Ni-Mo binary alloys containing 8.0 to 41.8 wt pct Mo have been prepared under carefully controlled processing conditions. The growth velocity has been determined as a function of distance from the quench surface from the observed ribbon thickness dependence on the melt puddle residence time. Primary arm spacings measured at the midribbon thickness locations show a dependence on growth velocity and alloy composition which is expected from dendritic growth models for binary alloys directionally solidified in a positive temperature gradient. Microsegregation across cells and its variation with distance from the quench surface and alloy composition have been examined and compared with theoretical predictions.

Dendritic growth of undercooled nickel-tin. III

The paper is concerned with structures and microsegregations in undercooled droplets of Ni-25 wt pct Sn and eutectic Ni-32.5 wt pct Sn alloys. An analysis of experimental results suggests that all samples solidify dendritically and that the final structures are largely the result of ripening. Experimental data on minimum solute composition in the samples produced are bounded by two curves both of which assume equilibrium at all liquid-solid interfaces during recalescence and subsequent cooling. The eutectic alloy samples often show a dendritic structure over the surface in areas where shrinkage is present. This structure appears to be the remnant of an original growth structure in which only limited ripening occurred, due to the rapid removal of interdendritic liquid by shrinkage.

Variable-Polarity Plasma Arc Welding Of Alloy 2219

Consists of two parts: Examination of effects of microsegregation and transient weld stress on macrosegregation in weld pool and, electrical characterization of straight- and reverse-polarity portions of arc cycle.

Dendritic growth and structure of undercooled nickel base alloys

The principal objectives of this overall investigation are to: study means for obtaining high undercooling in levitation melted droplets, and study structures produced upon the solidification of these undercooled specimens. Thermal measurements are made of the undercooling, and of the rapid recalescence, to develop an understanding of the solidification mechanism. Comparison of results is made with the modeling studies. Characterization and metallographic work is done to gain an understanding of the relationship between rapid solidification variables and the structures so produced. In ground based work to date, solidification of undercooled Ni-25 wt percent Sn alloy was observed by high-speed cinematography and the results compared with optical temperature measurements. Also in ground based work, high-speed optical temperature measurements were made of the solidification behavior of levitated metal samples within a transparent glass medium. Two undercooled Ni-Sn alloys were examined. Measurements were carried out on samples at undercoolings up to 330 K. Microstructures of samples produced in ground based work were determined by optical metallography and by SEM, and microsegregation by electron microprobe measurements. A series of flight tests were planned to conduct experiments similar to the ground based experiments. The Space Shuttle Columbia carried an alloy undercooled experiment in the STS 61-C mission in January 1986. A sample of Ni-32.5 wt percent Sn eutectic was melted and solidified under microgravity conditions.

Dendritic solidification in binary alloys

Alloys generally solidify dendritically, and associated with that is the microsegregation of impurities. Pure metals also solidify in dendritic form as 'thermal' dendrites, which actually segregate the system's enthalpy. In this investigation, small additions of solute to succinonitrile have been studied and dendritic growth observed in a supercooled melt. This free dendritic growth-mode is similar to that experienced by equiaxed dendrites found in alloy castings. Observations of these free dendrites include measurement of velocity and tip radius of the dendrites at different supercoolings and solute concentrations.

Controlled Temperature Gradient Improves Freezing Alloy

Controlled gradient of temperature in advancing zone of solidification increases fatigue life of directionally solidified nickel-base superalloy. Improved solidification process eliminates, reduces, or controls microstructure of deleterious brittle phases, including carbides and gamma/gamma prime eutectic. Also reduces microsegregation and makes discrete carbides (if present) become fine and blocky. Expected to improve properties of other alloys, of both directionally-solidified polycrystalline and single-crystal forms.

Interface shapes during vertical Bridgman growth of (Pb, Sn)Te crystals

Melt-solid interfaces obtained during vertical Bridgman growth of (Pb, Sn)Te crystals were investigated with a quenching technique. The shapes of these interfaces, revealed by etching longitudinally cut sections, were correlated with the composition variations determined by EMPA. These experiments demonstrated that the interface shape can be changed from concave to convex by moving its location from the edge of the cold zone into the hot zone. The metallography and microsegregation near the melt-solid interface were analyzed in detail. A sharp change in composition above the interface indicated the existence of a diffusion boundary layer 40-90 microns thick. This small diffusion boundary layer is consistent with strong convective mixing in the (Pb, Sn)Te melt.

Segregation and convection in dendritic alloys

Microsegregation in dentritic alloys is discussed, including solidification with and without thermal gradient, the convection of interdendritic liquid. The conservation of momentum, energy, and solute is considered. Directional solidification and thermosolutal convection are discussed.

Melt infiltration of silicon carbide compacts. II - Evaluation of solidification microstructures

Microstructural aspects of alloy solidification within the interstices of porous compacts of platelet-shaped single crystals of alpha-SiC, when the latter are infiltrated with a hot metal under pressure, have been described. Microstructural evidence is presented of selective reorientation of platelets and nonhomogeneous solute distribution under shear of pressurized melt, of constrained growth of primary solid within finite width zones, and of the modulation of coring due to microsegregation as a result of variations in the pore size of compacts.

New optical approaches to the quantitative characterization of crystal growth, segregation and defect formation

Elemental and compound semiconductors were characterized using new optical approach based on NIR microscopy in conjunction with computational image analysis and contrast enhancement. The approach made it possible to perform a quantitative microsegregation analysis of GaAs and InP. NIR dark file illumination in transmission mode makes it possible to detect submicron precipitates in semiinsulating GaAs.
