Laplacian-level meta-generalized gradient approximation for solid and liquid metals

In this work, we derive and motivate a Laplacian-level, orbital-free meta-generalized-gradient approximation (LL-MGGA) for the exchange-correlation energy, targeting accurate ground-state properties of sp and sd metallic condensed matter, in which the density functional for the exchange-correlation energy is only weakly nonlocal due to perfect long-range screening. Our model for the orbital-free kinetic energy density restores the fourth-order gradient expansion for exchange to the r 2 SCAN meta-GGA [Furness et al., J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 11, 8208 (2020)], yielding a LL-MGGA we call OFR2. OFR2 matches the accuracy of SCAN for prediction of common lattice constants and improves the equilibrium properties of alkali metals, transition metals, and intermetallics that were degraded relative to the PBE GGA values by both SCAN and r 2 SCAN. We compare OFR2 to the r 2 SCAN -L LL-MGGA [Mejia-Rodriguez and Trickey, Phys. Rev. B 102, 121109(R) (2020)] and show that OFR2 tends to outperform r 2 SCAN -L for the equilibrium properties of solids, but r 2 SCAN -L much better describes the atomization energies of molecules than OFR2 does. For best accuracy in molecules and nonmetallic condensed matter, we continue to recommend SCAN and r 2 SCAN. Numerical performance is discussed in detail, and our paper provides an outlook to machine learning.

Effect of solution concentration on ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) nonmetallic components used in caustic liquid waste transfer lines

The hose-in-hose transfer lines (HIHTL) used to transfer waste at the United States Department of Energy’s Hanford Site Tank Farm are fabricated from an ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) synthetic rubber. During waste transport, these hoses are exposed to several stressors including caustic solutions at high temperatures and high pressures, as well as β and γ radiation. The aging behavior of HIHTL and dog-bone shaped EPDM specimens were evaluated by exposure to solutions at 77 °C containing 0.00, 6.25, 12.50, and 25.00 % (v/v) sodium hydroxide (NaOH) for 12-months. After the exposure, the material properties of the specimens were measured and compared to the unaged samples. The material properties evaluated included the tensile strength of the EPDM dog-bone samples and the burst pressure of the HIHTL. Both the tensile strength of the EPDM dog-bone samples and the burst pressure of the HIHTL specimens exposed to the 6.25 % NaOH solution exhibited the most significant deterioration and those exposed to 25.00 % NaOH solution had the least deterioration. Finally, examination of the HIHTL and the EPDM dog-bone specimens with scanning electron microscopy showed that the deterioration for the specimens exposed to 6.25 % NaOH solution were the most severe and the samples exposed to 25.00 % NaOH solution had the least deterioration.

Synthesis, Structures, and Transport Properties of Quaternary Ba–Ag– Tr –As Materials ( Tr = Ga, In)

The synthesis, structures, and properties of two quaternary barium–arsenide materials are presented. The first, Ba 4 Ag 2.3 In 1.7 As 8 , is a novel material with the monoclinic unit cell ( P 2 1 / m space group). The layered crystal structure of Ba 4 Ag 2.3 In 1.7 As 8 may be considered a lower‐symmetry, distorted analog of the LaCuSb 2 structure. The structure features a rare As fragment, cis‐trans As chains along the [010] direction. Large crystals of Ba 4 Ag 2.3 In 1.7 As 8 can be grown from Bi flux and are used for subsequent transport property measurements. Electrical resistivity and heat capacity properties are reported, establishing Ba 4 Ag 2.3 In 1.7 As 8 as a metallic phase. The second material, Ba 4 AgGa 5 As 8 , is a 3D material that crystallizes in the orthorhombic unit cell (noncentrosymmetric and polar Iba 2 space group). Expanding upon its original discovery, the optimized synthetic profile for single‐phase polycrystalline samples as well as transport properties relevant to thermoelectric applications are presented. Ba 4 AgGa 5 As 8 exhibits a high Seebeck coefficient of 290 μV K −1 at room temperature, indicative of lower carrier concentrations typical for nonmetallic phases. Electrical resistivity measurements also affirm conventional semiconducting behavior for Ba 4 AgGa 5 As 8 .

Two good metals make a semiconductor: A potassium-nickel compound under pressure

We predict a potassium-nickel intermetallic compound K 2 Ni at high pressure and identify it as the long-sought structure of the only known K-Ni compound to date. Although both constituent elements are metallic, K 2 Ni exhibits a semiconducting ground state with an indirect band gap of 0.65 eV. Electron instability due to the degeneracy at the Fermi level arises from the particular motif of the structure, which in turn induces symmetry-breaking Peierls distortion and a nonmetallic ground state. Overall, the results indicate that the chemical properties of elements can change dramatically under extreme conditions and have significant implications for the postulation that potassium is incorporated in Earth's core.

Thermal Conductivity of BAs under Pressure

Abstract The thermal conductivity of boron arsenide (BAs) is believed to be influenced by phonon scattering selection rules due to its special phonon dispersion. Compression of BAs leads to significant changes in phonon dispersion, which allows for a test of first principles theories for how phonon dispersion affects three‐ and four‐phonon scattering rates. This study reports the thermal conductivity of BAs from 0 to 30 GPa. Thermal conductivity vs. pressure of BAs is measured by time‐domain thermoreflectance with a diamond anvil cell. In stark contrast to what is typical for nonmetallic crystals, BAs is observed to have a pressure independent thermal conductivity below 30 GPa. The thermal conductivity of nonmetallic crystals typically increases upon compression. The unusual pressure independence of BAs's thermal conductivity shows the important relationship between phonon dispersion properties and three‐ and four‐phonon scattering rates.

Biomimetic CO oxidation below -100 °C by a nitrate-containing metal-free microporous system

CO oxidation is of importance both for inorganic and living systems. Transition and precious metals supported on various materials can oxidize CO to CO 2 . Among them, few systems, such as Au/TiO 2 , can perform CO oxidation at temperatures as low as -70 °C. Living (an)aerobic organisms perform CO oxidation with nitrate using complex enzymes under ambient temperatures representing an essential pathway for life, which enables respiration in the absence of oxygen and leads to carbonate mineral formation. Herein, we report that CO can be oxidized to CO 2 by nitrate at -140 °C within an inorganic, nonmetallic zeolitic system. The transformation of NO x and CO species in zeolite as well as the origin of this unique activity is clarified using a joint spectroscopic and computational approach.

Corrosion characteristics of Mo and TZM alloy for plasma facing components in molten lithium at 623 K

Here, in this study, the corrosion behaviours of molybdenum (Mo) and a Mo-based alloy (TZM) were investigated using a static immersion corrosion technique. Weight loss, surface microstructure, and corrosion depth of Mo and the TZM alloy were correlated with elements. The compatibility of Mo and the TZM alloy in static liquid Li was suitable. Mo demonstrated uniform corrosion with a homogenous dissolution of free C and Mo, and TZM alloy exhibited a nonuniform corrosion behaviour with a preferential grain boundary attack caused by the selective dissolution of free C, Ti, and Zr. When the surface oxidation layer of the samples was consumed, free C from Mo and TZM diffused into molten Li to form Li 2 C 2 and then was captured by Zr, Ti, and Mo to form thermodynamically stable carbides, which resulted in the enrichment of the C layer near the sample surfaces. In addition, Ti and Zr acted as N-trappers in liquid Li; the formation of Zr and Ti nitrides resulted in the enrichment of N, Ti, and Zr elements on the surface and led to TZM corrosion increase. Thus, Zr and Ti depletion, pitting, and grain boundary corrosion were problematic for TZM under long-term exposure to liquid Li. Reducing the content of free C and nonmetallic N and increasing the amount of Ti and Zr carbides on the surface of and inside the raw TZM alloy helped improve the corrosion resistance of TZM in liquid Li.

The role of nonmetallic ion substitution in perovskite LaCoO 3 for improved oxygen evolution reaction activity

Transition metal perovskite (ABO 3 ) is an emerging type of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst that shows reasonably good activity and moderate stability. Although efforts have been made to improve perovskite’ OER performance by various element substitution at A/B-site, the influence of ion, particularly non-metallic ion, substitutions on the OER mechanism are rarely studied. More and more evidence has shown that the metal-center theory has failed to explain lots of OER-related phenomena. Therefore, it is urgent to understand how the cation and anion sites in perovskite determine OER performance. In this work, we used a Fe and P co-doped LaCoO 3 as a model system to explore the influence of substitution in perovskite by combining operando/ex-situ X-ray characterization and density functional theory (DFT). We observed enhanced OER catalytic activities in co-doped materials, which are attributed to the stronger transition-metal-oxygen-bonding-covalency (TMOBC). The detailed analyses by O K-edge XAS, electrochemical performance, and DFT suggest that the hybridization between O 2p and transition metal 3d e g orbitals could be a more credible descriptor of perovskite for OER, which is the combination of e g orbital theory and TMOBC theory. The finding in our work provides insights into the OER catalysis mechanism on metal oxides, which could guide new design of cost-effective oxide electrocatalysts.

Thermal 𝑅⁢𝐶 circuit model for resolving the thermal paradox

Thermal measurements of heat capacity and thermal conductivity in a wide range of insulators and superconductors exhibit a “thermal paradox”: a large linear specific heat reminiscent of neutral Fermi surfaces (associated with fractionalized quasiparticles) in nonmetallic samples that exhibit no corresponding linear temperature coefficient to the thermal conductivity. At first sight, these observations appear to support the formation of a continuum of thermally localized many-body excitations, a form of many-body localization that would be fascinating in its own right. Here, in this work, by mapping thermal conductivity measurements onto thermal 𝑅⁢𝐶 circuits, we argue that the development of extremely long thermal relaxation times, a “thermal bottleneck,” is likely in systems with either many-body localization or neutral Fermi surfaces due to the large ratio between the electron and phonon specific heat capacities. We present a reevaluation of thermal conductivity measurements in materials exhibiting a thermal paradox that can be used in future experiments to deliberate between these two exciting alternatives.

Capping layer influence and isotropic in-plane upper critical field of the superconductivity at the FeSe / SrTiO 3 interface

Understanding the superconductivity at the interface of FeSe/SrTiO 3 is a problem of great contemporary interest due to the significant increase in critical temperature (T c ) compared to that of bulk FeSe, as well as the possibility of an unconventional pairing mechanism and topological superconductivity. We report a study of the influence of a capping layer on superconductivity in thin films of FeSe grown on SrTiO 3 using molecular beam epitaxy. We used in vacuo four-probe electrical resistance measurements and ex situ magnetotransport measurements to examine the effect of three capping layers that provide distinct charge transfer into FeSe: insulating FeTe, nonmetallic Te, and metallic Zr. Our results show that FeTe provides an optimal cap that barely influences the inherent T c found in pristine FeSe/SrTiO 3 , while the transfer of holes from a nonmetallic Te cap completely suppresses superconductivity and leads to insulating behavior. Finally, we used ex situ magnetoresistance measurements in FeTe capped FeSe films to extract the angular dependence of the in-plane upper critical magnetic field. Our observations reveal an almost isotropic in-plane upper critical field, providing insight into the symmetry and pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity in FeSe.

Damp Heat Induced Degradation of Silicon Heterojunction Solar Cells With Cu-Plated Contacts

Damp heat exposure is one of the most stringent environments for testing the durability of solar cells in packaged modules. Damp heat stresses and induces a variety of degradation modes in solar cells and modules: for example, moisture-induced corrosion of electrodes and interconnections, deterioration of polymeric materials, and/or thermally activated diffusion processes. To screen for these and other potential degradation modes, we subject one-cell modules containing silicon heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells with Cu-plated contacts to extended damp heat tests at 85 °C/85% relative humidity. SHJ cells were laminated with two common encapsulants: ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and polyolefin elastomer (POE), and two constructions: glass-backsheet and glass-glass. We observe degradation in all components of solar cell maximum power (PMP): current, voltage, and fill factor, and find evidence of increased carrier recombination and nonideal diode behavior with increasing stress. For glass-backsheet constructions, EVA samples generally degrade more than POE by a factor of approximately 1.5x PMP, and the different encapsulants produce different degradation patterns. Similar trends are observed in glass-glass modules, but to a lesser degree. In a different experiment, we observe a decrease in effective minority carrier lifetime of nonmetallized SHJ precursors measured after damp heat. This implies that some degradation unrelated to the contacts is to be expected and confirms the observation of increasing recombination.

Miniaturized Magnetoelastic Sensor System

This article describes the design, assembly, and implementation of a hand-held, magnetic-field-based sensor system that can be adapted for a variety of sensing applications. The miniaturized system is based on Chemical Identification by Magneto-Elastic Sensing (ChIMES) technology, which uses three concentric solenoid coils to wirelessly interrogate a sensor body comprised of a response material coupled to a magnetoelastic wire. The response material expands when it encounters a target, imposing mechanical stress on the wire and altering its magnetic permeability. The sensor bodies are passive, requiring no external power source, and they are small, measuring about 15 mm in length and 3.0 mm in diameter. Up to four sensor bodies can be configured as an evenly-spaced linear array. The sensor system operates by applying a low-frequency, current-stabilized, filtered triangle wave to a uniform-density excitation coil to switch the magnetic domains within the wire. Further, the responses from the sensors are picked up by a detection coil as stress-induced changes in the Faraday voltage, and the strong magnetic field induced by the excitation coil in the detection coil is nullified by a cancellation coil reverse-wound in series with the detection coil. The responses of the sensors in an array are separated in time by a linear gradient dc biasing coil. The sensors can be interrogated through metallic and nonmetallic barriers. The signals from the detection coil and the excitation coil are digitized by a pair of bipolar analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). A Raspberry Pi single-board computer (SBC) and associated software perform data acquisition and control all aspects of the sensor system hardware. The program allows the user to select the number of sensors in the array, the type of signal that is being collected, and the number of samples to take. The program also allows for signal processing of the sensor data, such as baseline correction. The program can differentiate sensor peaks from each other and calculate the magnitude of each sensor response with less than 1% error. The data are then displayed along with a graph of the signal.

A Panoramic View of MXenes via an Atomic Coordination‐Based Design Strategy

Two‐dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides and nitrides, known as MXenes, possess unique physical and chemical properties, enabling diverse applications in fields ranging from energy storage to communication, catalysis, sensing, healthcare, and beyond. Despite extensive research and notable advancements, a fundamental understanding of MXenes’ phase diversity and its connection to their hierarchical precursors, including the intermediate MAX phases and the ancestral bulk phases, remains limited. Here, in this study, it is hypothesized that the atomic coordination environments adopted by transition metal and nonmetallic atoms in their three‐dimensional (3D) bulk precursors may persist in 2D MXenes to govern their phase diversity. Using high‐throughput modeling based on first‐principles density functional theory, a wide range of MXene phases is unveiled and comprehensively evaluate their relative stabilities across a large chemical space. The key to the approach lies in considering various atomic coordination environments drawn from four types of ancestral bulk phases. Through this comprehensive structural library of MXenes, general guiding principles are uncovered, such as a close alignment between the phase stability of MXenes and that of their 3D precursors. These findings introduce a new design strategy in which the atomic coordination environments in bulk phases can serve as reliable predictors for accessing the diverse structural landscape of MXenes.
