Detection of Anomalies in Environmental Gamma Radiation Background with Hopfield Artificial Neural Network - Consortium on Nuclear Security Technologies (CONNECT) Q3 Report

Environmental screening of gamma radiation consists of detecting weak nuisance and anomaly signal in the presence of strong and highly varying background. In a typical scenario, a mobile detector-spectrometer continuously measures gamma radiation spectra in short, e.g., one-second, signal acquisition intervals. The measurement data is a 2D matrix, where one dimension is gamma ray energy, and the other dimension is the number of measurements or total time. In principle, gamma radiation sources can be detected and identified from the measured data by their unique spectral lines. Detecting sources from data measured in a search scenario is difficult due to the highly varying background because of naturally occurring radioactive material (NORM), and low signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of spectral signal measured during one-second acquisition intervals. The objective of this work is to investigate performance of a Hopfield Neural Network (HNN) in in detection and identification of weak nuisances and anomalies events in the presence of a highly fluctuating background. Performance of HNN algorithm is benchmarked using search data from an environmental screening campaign. One data set contained a 137 Cs source, and another dataset contained a 131 I source.

VA EDH Data Curation Documentation (FY22-Q3, Rev.2)

The health and well-being of the Nation’s men and women who have served in uniform is the highest priority for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). VA is committed to providing timely access to high-quality, recovery-oriented, evidence-based mental health care that anticipates and responds to Veterans’ needs and supports the reintegration of returning Service members into their communities. VA is working to eliminate suicide among all Veterans by developing and implementing innovative suicide prevention approaches and resources. Health outcomes, such as suicide are typically modeled as a function of genetics and environment, where environment refers to factors beyond medical, e.g., air quality, access to transportation and food, homelessness status, etc. Mental health outcomes for each individual are considered to be associated with multiple stressors that fall under a variety of categories socioeconomic, economic, physical environment. Understanding the relationships between these stressors, covariates and health outcomes, requires curated, standardized data that can be input into the VA’s Recovery Engagement and Coordination for Health - Veterans Enhanced Treatment (REACH VET) or other health outcomes model. Environmental Determinants of Health (EDH) as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) is clean air, stable climate, adequate water, sanitation and hygiene, safe use of chemicals, protection from radiation, healthy and safe workplaces, sound agricultural practices, health-supportive cities and built environments, and a preserved nature are all prerequisites for good health.

Area V: Waste Management and Subsurface Science Q3 Report

The objective of Topic Area V is to evaluate the feasibility and safety of an intermediate-depth borehole for disposal of IAEC nuclear waste. The IAEC nuclear waste is currently stored in above ground and/or in near-surface facilities that provide short-term radiological worker safety but do not provide long-term, full security and safeguards protection for the nuclear material. Disposal of the IAEC nuclear waste several hundred meters below the surface in a sealed borehole would provide long-term security and safeguards due to its depth underground, as well as long-term radiological safety, due to its isolation in a stable geological formation.

Plutonium Basket Counter Measurement Control Q3-Q4 2023

The Plutonium Basket Counter (PBC) is a spent fuel nuclear safeguards instrument that was developed to measure spent-fuel elements from MAGNOX-type research reactors and determine their plutonium content. The instrument is designed to measure fuel elements in spent fuel cooling pools through underwater operation, but it is also able to measure radiation sources in air. The PBC determines fuel plutonium content by detecting neutrons with an array of Helium-3 detectors. The electronics make use of a JSR-15 shift register for data collection and IAEA Neutron Coincidence Counting (INCC) software for data analysis. The PBC is used to determine the 240 Pu content in spent MAGNOX fuel elements grouped into basket-like bundles, thus the instrument’s name. Reactor burnup calculations can be used in conjunction with the data from the PBC to estimate the total plutonium content in the fuel.

Late-Stage Research Development and Demonstration Sub-activities Updates – FY24 Q3

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), in collaboration with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), and the Hummingbird Firm (a specialized consulting firm focused on promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion considerations), has initiated a national initiative known as the Heat Pump (HP) and Heat Pump Water Heater (HPWH) Field Validation Partnership. This effort involves active participation from numerous critical entities involved in research and market transformation within the field. The ORNL team is responsible for leading Late-Stage Research Development and Demonstration (LSRDD) among the four different topics. The overall outcomes of this project will be: (1) A structured Field Validation Partnership between DOE, the national labs, research, implementation, and market transformation organizations. This will result in unique way to coordinate field validation plans and collect relevant data from around the country into the HP and HPWH Field Validation Database. (2) The Field Validation Partnership will result in a continuous stream of information between DOE and the major industry players in the space of HPs and HPWHs. If desired, DOE could use this information to inform roadmaps related to HP and HPWH market adoption and research going forward. (3) The structure of this Partnership provides a mechanism for sharing lessons learned directly between Late-Stage RD&D, Building Integration Barriers, Regional Market and Policy and Workforce Development efforts. The result will be training content that is well-reviewed by the Partnership which will lead to a workforce that meets the industry’s quality and workforce supply demands. (4) The structure of this Partnership also provides an opportunity for regions to share lessons learned on policy and market transformation with each other through the Market and Policy core Committee. This report includes an update in Late-Stage Research Development and Demonstration.

VA EDH Data Curation Documentation (FY24-Q3)

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) places the health and well-being of our nation’s veterans as its top priority. VA is dedicated to offering timely access to high-quality, evidence-based mental health care that meets the needs of veterans and supports their reintegration into society. One of our core missions is to prevent suicide among veterans through innovative approaches and resources. Health outcomes, including suicide, are typically influenced by both genetics and environmental factors, such as air quality, transportation access, food availability, homelessness, and more. Mental health outcomes are associated with various stressors across socioeconomic, economic, and physical environments. Analyzing the connections between these stressors, covariates, and health outcomes relies on standardized data, which can be integrated into models like the VA’s Recovery Engagement and Coordination for Health, Veterans Enhanced Treatment (REACH VET). The World Health Organization (WHO) defines Environmental Determinants of Health (EDH) as factors like clean air, stable climate, water and sanitation, chemical safety, radiation protection, safe workplaces, sustainable agriculture, healthy urban environments, and nature preservation, all of which are crucial for good health.

DOE BSSD Performance Management Metrics Report Q3

Microbiome data is complex, spanning information from microbial genomes within diverse communities, protein and metabolite readouts, and contextual information (metadata) captured from the environments from which these samples were collected. While the variety and scale of microbiome data generation has dramatically expanded over the past twenty years, infrastructure to support data management, sharing, and access has lagged. New ways to improve interoperability across existing resources and advancing community standards are necessary to support how researchers create, use, and reuse data. The National Microbiome Data Collaborative (NMDC) aims to advance a microbiome data sharing network through infrastructure, data standards, and community building.

VA Determinants of Health Data Curation Documentation FY25-Q3

With funding from the VA Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention (OMHSP), the Determinants of Health (EDH) project has developed innovative datasets associated with specific health outcomes, a methodology for transforming spatiotemporal data from one spatial reference (e.g., a 1km grid) to another (e.g., US Census Tracts), and capabilities for modeling health outcomes. These datasets represent an enhancement of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), addressing key gaps by introducing finer spatial resolution (Census Tract) and additional geographical covariates into existing data. The curation and standardization of these datasets is a complex task since they often originate from various sources and are measured at different spatial and temporal resolutions. For example, US Census data products typically use census blocks, block groups, or counties, while data like weather data are available on 1km grids. Some economic data may only be available at the zip code level. In this context, ‘standardized’ means that all datasets share the same spatial extent (e.g., US Census Tract and/or County), and ‘curated’ implies a repeatable process with data provenance and the use of appropriate methodologies for covariate conversion. The Determinants of Health datasets draw from multiple sources, resulting in variables with varying degrees of availability, patterns of missing data, and methodological considerations across different sources, geographies, and years.
