Consequences of Insufficient Production of Temporary NOx Reservoirs on Ozone Production in Models During KORUS-AQ

The advent of geostationary satellites, starting with GEMS over South Korea, offer the potential for additional insight into urban air quality. In preparation for these satellites, the joint NIER-NASA KORUS-AQ field campaign in 2016 obtained a large dataset for understanding local air quality and the contribution of local emissions to ozone and PM2.5 pollution. Models partitioned NOx primarily into inorganic nitrate (HNO3 + nitrate aerosol) while observations suggest that acyl peroxy nitrates (PNs) should be an important sink. Models tended to produce ozone too efficiently, which may be due to insufficient alkyl/multifunctional nitrate (ANs) production. Models are unable to simulate the transport of NOx away from the urban center and its impact on ozone production downwind.

Monte Carlo study of a model of diffusion-controlled reactions

The Monte Carlo method is used to perform averages over sink configurations in the present study of diffusion-controlled reactions occurring between solute particles and immobile spherical sinks. In order to determine the average steady state solute concentration profile in a locally perturbed solution for sink volume fractions phi of less than 0.3, the diffusion equation in the monopolar plus dipolar approximation of diffusive couplings between the sinks is solved numerically. The Monte Carlo method is shown to be the most accurate and efficient in the phi = 0.001-0.1 region, where a system of only 25 sinks suffices and the monopolar approximation alone is sufficiently accurate.

Solder Bonding for Power Transistors

Indium solder boosts power rating and facilitates circuit changes. Efficient heat conduction from power transistor to heat sink provided by layer of indium solder. Low melting point of indium solder (141 degrees C) allows power transistor to be removed, if circuit must be reworked, without disturbing other components mounted with ordinary solder that melts at 181 degrees C. Solder allows devices operated at higher power levels than does conventional attachment by screws.

Brush-Type Connectors for Thermoelectric Elements

Wire brushes used to connect positive and negative legs of semiconductor thermoelectric generators to power leads and heat sources and sinks. Brushes are flexible thermal and electrical conductors that readily accommodate expansion and contraction of legs with changing temperature. Thus, direct conductive coupling between heat source and sink allowed, in contrast to older and less efficient method of having to couple radiatively to accommodate thermal expansion.

A network flow model for load balancing in circuit-switched multicomputers

In multicomputers that utilize circuit switching or wormhole routing, communication overhead depends largely on link contention - the variation due to distance between nodes is negligible. This has a major impact on the load balancing problem. In this case, there are some nodes with excess load (sources) and others with deficit load (sinks) and it is required to find a matching of sources to sinks that avoids contention. The problem is made complex by the hardwired routing on currently available machines: the user can control only which nodes communicate but not how the messages are routed. Network flow models of message flow in the mesh and the hypercube were developed to solve this problem. The crucial property of these models is the correspondence between minimum cost flows and correctly routed messages. To solve a given load balancing problem, a minimum cost flow algorithm is applied to the network. This permits one to determine efficiently a maximum contention free matching of sources to sinks which, in turn, tells one how much of the given imbalance can be eliminated without contention.

Design requirements for high-efficiency high concentration ratio space solar cells

A miniaturized Cassegrainian concentrator system concept was developed for low cost, multikilowatt space solar arrays. The system imposes some requirements on solar cells which are new and different from those imposed for conventional applications. The solar cells require a circular active area of approximately 4 mm in diameter. High reliability contacts are required on both front and back surfaces. The back area must be metallurgically bonded to a heat sink. The cell should be designed to achieve the highest practical efficiency at 100 AMO suns and at 80 C. The cell design must minimize losses due to nonuniform illumination intensity and nonnormal light incidence. The primary radiation concern is the omnidirectional proton environment.

Thermoelectric refrigerator

A refrigerator is provided which combines the benefits of superinsulation materials with thermoelectric devices and phase change materials to provide an environmentally benign system that is energy efficient and can maintain relatively uniform temperatures for extended periods of time with relatively low electrical power requirements. The refrigerator includes a thermoelectric assembly having a thermoelectric device with a hot sink and a cold sink. The superinsulation materials include a plurality of vacuum panels. The refrigerator is formed from an enclosed structure having a door. The vacuum panels may be contained within the walls of the enclosed structure and the door. By mounting the thermoelectric assembly on the door, the manufacturer of the enclosed structure is simplified and the overall R rating of the refrigerator increased. Also an electrical motor and propellers may be mounted on the door to assist in the circulation of air to improve the efficiency of the cold sink and the hot sink. A propeller and/or impeller is preferably mounted within the refrigerator to assist in establishing the desired air circulation flow path.

The efficiency of 'viscous interaction' between the solar wind and the magnetosphere during intense northward IMF events

We examined 11 cases when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) was intensely northward (greater than 10 nT) for long durations of time (greater than 3 hours), to quantitatively determine an uppler limit on the efficiency of solar wind energy injection into the magnetosphere. We have specifically selected these large B(sub N) events to minimize the effects of magnetic reconnection. Many of these cases occurred during intervals of high-speed streams associated with coronal mass ejections when viscous interaction effects might be at a maximum. It is found that the typical efficiency of solar wind energy injection into the magnetosphere is 1.0 x 10(exp -3) to 4.0 x 10(exp -3), 100 to 30 times less efficient than during periods of intense southward IMFs. Other energy sinks not included in these numbers are discussed. Estimates of their magnitudes are provided.

The Efficiency of "Viscous Interaction" Between the Solar Wind and the Magnetosphere During Intense Northward IMF Events

We examined 11 cases when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) was intensely northward (>10 nT) for long durations of time (>3 hours), to quantitatively determine an upper limit on the efficiency of solar wind energy injection into the magnetosphere. We have specifically selected these large BN events to minimize the effects of magnetic reconnection. Many of these cases occurred during intervals of high- speed streams associated with coronal mass ejections when viscous interaction effects might be at a maximum. It is found that the typical efficiency of solar wind energy injection into the magnetosphere is 1.2 x 10-3 to 4.0 x 10-3, 100 to 300 times less efficient than during periods of intense southward IMFs. Other energy sinks not included in these numbers are discussed. Estimates of their magnitudes are provided.

A study of hear sink performance in air and soil for use in a thermoelectric energy harvesting device

A suggested application of a thermoelectric generator is to exploit the natural temperature difference between the air and the soil to generate small amounts of electrical energy. Since the conversion efficiency of even the best thermoelectric generators available is very low, the performance of the heat sinks providing the heat flow is critical. By providing a constant heat input to various heat sinks, field tests of their thermal conductances in soil and in air were performed. Aprototype device without a thermoelectric generator was constructed, buried, and monitored to experimentally measure the heat flow achievable in such a system. Theoretical considerations for design and selection of improved heat sinks are also presented. In particular, the method of shape factoranalysis is used to give rough estimates and upper bounds for the thermal conductance of a passive heat sink buried in soil.

Experimental analysis of vortex trapping techniques

The use of suction to trap a vortex is investigated experimentally. Vortex trapping using a finite sink and cross-flow obstructions is shown to be viable in the case of low-speed flow over a flat plate airfoil. A dual-fence geometry is found to be more efficient than a backward-facing step due to the greater restriction of vortex movement in the streamwise direction. The backward-facing step geometry provides for an increase in the sink strength required for trapping, while the more efficient dual-fence geometry permits the use of a lower suction force for trapping.

Design of an adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator for studies in astrophysics

An adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator was designed for cooling infrared bolometers for studies in astrophysics and aeronomy. The design was tailored to the requirements of a Shuttle sortie experiment. The refrigerator should be capable of maintaining three bolometers at 0.1 K with a 90% cycle. The advantage are of operations the bolometer at 0.1K. greater sensitivity, faster response time, and the ability to use larger bolometer elements without compromising the response time. The design presented is the first complete design of an ADR intended for use in space. The most important of these specifications are to survive a Shuttle launch, to operate with 1.5 K - 2.0 K space-pumped liquid helium as a heat sink, to have a 90% duty cycle, and to be highly efficient.

An electrorheologically controlled semi-active landing gear

This study is to explore the application of electrorheology (ER) to the real-time control of damping forces that are transmitted through the nose landing gear for an F-106B aircraft. The main part of the landing gear is a strut that consists of a pneumatic spring and an ER controlled damper that is situatted on the strut centerline and applies a force directly opposing the vertical displacement of the nose wheel. The damping element rotates in response to strut displacement, employing a co-axial arrangement of stator and rotor plates connected to the opposing electrodes in the control circuit. The vertical displacement is conveted into rotation of the damper through a screw-nut mechanism. The ER fluid between the electrodes is thus engaged in shear along circumferential lines of action. This design results in a fast time response and a high ratio of strut forces achieved under Er-vs. zero-field control. Compact size and simplicity in fabrication are also attained. The analysis shows that when using an ER fluid of a yield stress of 7kPa, the energy absorption efficiency of the landing gear can reach almost 100% at various sink rates.

Probing the Atmospheric Cl Isotopic Ratio on Mars: Implications for Planetary Evolution and Atmospheric Chemistry

Following the recent detection of HCl in the atmosphere of Mars by ExoMars/Trace Gas Orbiter, we present here the first measurement of the 37Cl/35Cl isotopic ratio in the Martian atmosphere using a set of NOMAD observations. We determine an isotopic anomaly of -6 ±78‰ compared to Earth standard, consistent with the -51‰ to -1‰ measured on Mars’ surface by Curiosity. The measured isotopic ratio is also consistent with surface measurements, and suggests that Cl reservoirs may have undergone limited processing since formation in the Solar Nebula. The examination of possible sources and sinks of HCl shows only limited pathways to short-term efficient Cl fractionation and many plausible reservoirs of “light” Cl.

Drought Rapidly Diminishes the Large Net CO2 Uptake in 2011 Over Semi-Arid Australia

Each year, terrestrial ecosystems absorb more than a quarter of the anthropogenic carbon emissions, termed as land carbon sink. An exceptionally large land carbon sink anomaly was recorded in 2011, of which more than half was attributed to Australia. However, the persistence and spatially attribution of this carbon sink remain largely unknown. Here we conducted an observation-based study to characterize the Australian land carbon sink through the novel coupling of satellite retrievals of atmospheric CO2 and photosynthesis and in-situ flux tower measures. We show the 2010-11 carbon sink was primarily ascribed to savannas and grasslands. When all biomes were normalized by rainfall, shrublands however, were most efficient in absorbing carbon. We found the 2010-11 net CO2 uptake was highly transient with rapid dissipation through drought. The size of the 2010-11 carbon sink over Australia (0.97 Pg) was reduced to 0.48 Pg in 2011-12, and was nearly eliminated in 2012-13 (0.08 Pg). We further report evidence of an earlier 2000-01 large net CO2 uptake, demonstrating a repetitive nature of this land carbon sink. Given a significant increasing trend in extreme wet year precipitation over Australia, we suggest that carbon sink episodes will exert greater future impacts on global carbon cycle.
