Determination of the Solid-State Resistance-Weldability of Additively Manufactured 304L Stainless Steel

• A scoping study was undertaken at Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) to determine the solidstate resistance-weldability of additively manufactured 304L stainless steel. • Additive manufacturing of pressure-containing boundaries is of interest to numerous industries. • The approach investigated in this study was a low energy, solid state spot weld (pinch weld). • This general approach has been routinely used for conventionally prepared tubing and is now being expanded to additively manufactured components. • This work aimed to understand the impact of AM on the bond quality and weld geometry of pinch welds.

Weldable aluminum alloy has improved mechanical properties

Weldable aluminum alloy has good resistance to stress-corrosion cracking, shows unchanged strength and formability after storage at room temperature, and can be pre-aged, stretched, and aged. Since toxic fumes of cadmium oxide are evolved when the new alloy is welded, adequate ventilation must be provided.

New weldable high strength aluminum alloy developed for cryogenic service

Wrought aluminum alloy has improved low temperature notch toughness and weldability. This alloy can be mill-fabricated to plate and sheet without difficulty. Post-weld aging improves weld ductility and strength properties. A typical treatment is 8 hours at 225 deg F plus 16 hours at 300 deg F.

Ratio matching of half-bridge weldable strain gages, computer program

Computer program reduces the unbalance of weldable half-bridge strain gage installations. The program calculates the two resistance ratios of each half-bridge gage, outputting a table of gages ranked according to resistance ratio. The tabulation forms a convenient record of gage characteristics.

Weldability, strength, and high temperature stability of chemically vapor deposited tungsten

Three types of CVD tungsten (fluoride-produced, chloride-produced and the combination of the two which is termed duplex) were evaluated to determine their weldability, high temperature strength and structural stability during 5000 hour exposure to temperatures of 1540 C and 1700 C. Each type of CVD tungsten could be successfully electron beam welded but the results for the chloride product were not as satisfactory as those of the other two materials. The high temperature strength behavior of the three materials did not differ greatly. However a large difference was noted for the grain growth behavior of the two basic CVD tungsten materials. Fluoride tungsten was found to be relatively stable while for the most part the grain size of chloride tungsten increased appreciably. The examination of freshly fractured surfaces with a scanning electron microscope revealed numerous bubbles in the fluoride material following its exposure to 1700 C for 5000 hours. Less severe thermal treatments produced relatively few bubbles in this material. Only at certain locations within the chloride material associated with the interruption of tungsten were bubbles noted.
