Cold-atom quantum simulator for string and hadron dynamics in non-Abelian lattice gauge theory
We propose an analog quantum simulator for simulating real-time dynamics of (1+1)-dimensional non-Abelian gauge theory well within the existing capacity of ultracold-atom experiments. The scheme calls for the realization of a two-state ultracold fermionic system in a one-dimensional bipartite lattice, and the observation of subsequent tunneling dynamics. Being based on the loop string hadron formalism of SU(2) lattice gauge theory, this simulation technique is completely SU(2) invariant and simulates accurate dynamics of physical phenomena such as string breaking and/or pair production. The scheme is scalable and particularly effective in simulating the theory in the weak-coupling regime, and also a bulk limit of the theory in the strong-coupling regime up to certain approximations. This paper also presents a numerical benchmark comparison of the exact spectrum and real-time dynamics of lattice gauge theory to that of the atomic Hamiltonian with an experimentally realizable range of parameters.
Cold Atomic Hydrogen, Narrow Self-Absorption, and the Age of Molecular Clouds
This viewgraph presentation reviews the history, and current work on HI and its importance in star formation. Through many observations of HI Narrow Self Absorption (HINSA) the conclusions are drawn and presented. Local molecular clouds have HI well-mixed with molecular constituents This HI is cold, quiescent, and must be well-shielded from the UV radiation field The density and fractional abundance (wrt H2) of the cold HI are close to steady state values The time required to convert these starless clouds from purely HI initial state to observed present composition is a few to ten million years This timescale is a lower limit - if dense clouds being swept up from lower density regions by shocks, the time to accumulate material to get A(sub v) is approximately 1 and provide required shielding may be comparable or longer
Dynamics of magnetic evaporative beamline cooling for the preparation of cold atomic beams
The most sensitive direct neutrino mass searches today are based on measurement of the end point of the 𝛽 spectrum of tritium to infer limits on the mass of the unobserved neutrino. To avoid the smearing associated with the distribution of molecular final states in the T-He molecule, the next generation of these experiments will need to employ atomic (T) rather than molecular (T 2 ) tritium sources, at currents of at least 10 15 atoms per second. Following production, atomic T can be trapped in gravitational and/or magnetic bottles for 𝛽 spectrum experiments, if and only if it can first be cooled to millikelvin temperatures. Accomplishing this cooling presents substantial technological challenges. The Project 8 collaboration is developing a technique based on magnetic evaporative cooling along a beamline (MECB) for the purpose of cooling T to feed a magnetogravitational trap that also serves as a cyclotron radiation emission spectroscope. Initial tests of the approach are planned in a pathfinder apparatus using atomic Li. Here, this paper presents a method for analyzing the dynamics of the MECB technique and applies these calculations to the design of systems for cooling and slowing of atomic Li and T. A scheme is outlined that could provide a current of T at the millikelvin temperatures required for the Project 8 neutrino mass search.
Quantum dynamics of cold atomic gas with SU(1,1) symmetry
Motivated by recent advances in quantum dynamics, we investigate the dynamics of the system with SU(1,1) symmetry. Instead of performing the time-ordered integral for the evolution operator of the time-dependent Hamiltonian, we show that the time evolution operator can be expressed as an SU(1,1) group element. Since the SU(1,1) group describes the “rotation” on a hyperbolic surface, the dynamics can be visualized on a Poincaré disk, a stereographic projection of the upper hyperboloid. As an example, we present the trajectory of the revival of Bose-Einstein condensation and that of the scale-invariant Fermi gas on the Poincaré disk. Further considering quantum gases in an oscillating lattice, we also study the dynamics of the system with time-dependent single-particle dispersion.
