Layout and cabling considerations for a large communications antenna array

Layout considerations for a large deep space communications antenna array are discussed. A fractal geometry for the antenna layout is described that provides optimal packing of antenna elements, efficient cable routing, and logical division of the array into identical sub-arrays.

Auditory Spatial Layout

All auditory sensory information is packaged in a pair of acoustical pressure waveforms, one at each ear. While there is obvious structure in these waveforms, that structure (temporal and spectral patterns) bears no simple relationship to the structure of the environmental objects that produced them. The properties of auditory objects and their layout in space must be derived completely from higher level processing of the peripheral input. This chapter begins with a discussion of the peculiarities of acoustical stimuli and how they are received by the human auditory system. A distinction is made between the ambient sound field and the effective stimulus to differentiate the perceptual distinctions among various simple classes of sound sources (ambient field) from the known perceptual consequences of the linear transformations of the sound wave from source to receiver (effective stimulus). Next, the definition of an auditory object is dealt with, specifically the question of how the various components of a sound stream become segregated into distinct auditory objects. The remainder of the chapter focuses on issues related to the spatial layout of auditory objects, both stationary and moving.

The James Webb Telescope Instrument Suite Layout: Optical System Engineering Considerations for a Large, Deployable Space Telescope

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is a space-based, infrared observatory designed to study the early stages of galaxy formation in the Universe. The telescope will be launched into an elliptical orbit about the second Lagrange point and passively cooled to 30-50 K to enable astronomical observations from 0.6 to 28 microns. A group from the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the Northrop Grumman Space Technology prime contractor team has developed an optical and mechanical layout for the science instruments within the JWST field of view that satisfies the telescope s high-level performance requirements. Four instruments required accommodation within the telescope's field of view: a Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) provided by the University of Arizona; a Near-Mared Spectrometer (NIRSpec) provided by the European Space Agency; a Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) provided by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a European consortium; and a Fine Guidance Sensor (FGS) with a tunable filter module provided by the Canadian Space Agency. The size and position of each instrument's field of view allocation were developed through an iterative, concurrent engineering process involving the key observatory stakeholders. While some of the system design considerations were those typically encountered during the development of an infrared observatory, others were unique to the deployable and controllable nature of JWST. This paper describes the optical and mechanical issues considered during the field of view layout development, as well as the supporting modeling and analysis activities.

A Study of Vehicle Structural Layouts in Post-WWII Aircraft

In this paper, results of a study of structural layouts of post-WWII aircraft are presented. This study was undertaken to provide the background information necessary to determine typical layouts, design practices, and industry trends in aircraft structural design. Design decisions are often predicated not on performance-related criteria, but rather on such factors as manufacturability, maintenance access, and of course cost. For this reason, a thorough understanding of current best practices in the industry is required as an input for the design optimization process. To determine these best practices and industry trends, a large number of aircraft structural cutaway illustrations were analyzed for five different aircraft categories (commercial transport jets, business jets, combat jet aircraft, single engine propeller aircraft, and twin-engine propeller aircraft). Several aspects of wing design and fuselage design characteristics are presented here for the commercial transport and combat aircraft categories. A great deal of commonality was observed for transport structure designs over a range of eras and manufacturers. A much higher degree of variability in structural designs was observed for the combat aircraft, though some discernable trends were observed as well.

Human Factors Evaluations of Two-Dimensional Spacecraft Conceptual Layouts

Much of the human factors work done in support of the NASA Constellation lunar program has been with low fidelity mockups. These volumetric replicas of the future lunar spacecraft allow researchers to insert test subjects from the engineering and astronaut population and evaluate the vehicle design as the test subjects perform simulations of various operational tasks. However, lunar outpost designs must be evaluated without the use of mockups, creating a need for evaluation tools that can be performed on two-dimension conceptual spacecraft layouts, such as floor plans. A tool based on the Cooper- Harper scale was developed and applied to one lunar scenario, enabling engineers to select between two competing floor plan layouts. Keywords: Constellation, human factors, tools, processes, habitat, outpost, Net Habitable Volume, Cooper-Harper.

Sizing and Layout Design of an Aeroelastic Wingbox Through Nested Optimization

The goals of this work are to 1) develop an optimization algorithm that can simultaneously handle a large number of sizing variables and topological layout variables for an aeroelastic wingbox optimization problem and 2) utilize this algorithm to ascertain the benefits of curvilinear wingbox components. The algorithm used here is a nested optimization, where the outer level optimizes the rib and skin stiffener layouts with a surrogate-based optimizer, and the inner level sizes all of the components via gradient-based optimization. Two optimizations are performed: one restricted to straight rib and stiffener components only, the other allowing curved members. A moderate 1.18% structural mass reduction is obtained through the use of curvilinear members.

The final presentation of the California Polytechnic State University's Vertical Habitability Layout and Fabrication Studies, a vertical habitat. The goals of the project are: - Design the interior of a vertical habitat, with a well-documented link back to the process of design (continuing the work completed the first quarter, with parametrically-derived volumes, internal layout, etc.). - A full-size low-fidelity 3-D spatial (mockup of the vertical habitat.

A general method for the layout of ailerons and elevators of gliders and motorplanes

A method is described which allows the layout of the spatial driving mechanism of the aileron for a glider or a motorplane to be performed in a systematic manner. In particular, a prescribed input-output behavior of the mechanism can be realized by variation of individual parameters of the spatial four-bar mechanisms which constitute the entire driving mechanism. By means of a sensitivity analysis, a systematic choice of parameters is possible. At the same time the forces acting in the mechanism can be limited by imposing maximum values of the forces as secondary conditions during the variation process.

A laser plotting system for VLSI chip layouts

One of the most time consuming facets of custom Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) design is obtaining hardcopy plots of the mask geometries of cells and chips. The traditional method of generating these plots is to use a multicolor pen plotter. Pen plotters are inherently slow and the plotting speed increases linearly with the number of edges that must be plotted. A moderate custom chip design at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) now consists of more than 200,000 such edges and can take as much as eight hours to plot using a pen plotter. Software is described that was written at JPL to produce similar plots using a laser printer. It is shown that, for rather small layouts, the laser printer can provide nearly instantaneous turnaround. For moderate to large chip designs, the laser printer provides a factor of five or more improvement is speed over pen plotting.

An interactive wire-wrap board layout program

An interactive computer-graphics-based tool for specifying the placement of electronic parts on a wire-wrap circuit board is presented. Input is a data file (currently produced by a commercial logic design system) which describes the parts used and their interconnections. Output includes printed reports describing the parts and wire paths, parts counts, placement lists, board drawing, and a tape to send to the wire-wrap vendor. The program should reduce the engineer's layout time by a factor of 3 to 5 as compared to manual methods.
