Exploring Demographic Factors Behind the User Preferences in Ridesharing Services

Ridesharing is an increasingly prevalent form of transportation. Personal and pooled rideshare services are the two modes of ridesharing available on the market. While personal rideshare features higher time efficiency and better service experience, especially in terms of privacy, pooled rideshare has better energy efficiency and can reduce traffic congestion. To encourage users to utilize pooled rideshare, it is crucial to understand the factors behind preferences between pooled and personal rideshare services. This study conducted a survey study on a sample of 2,884 participants from the U.S. The stated-choice method was employed to collect the usage rate of pooled rideshare in designed scenarios. A detailed analysis of pooled rideshare usage rates among participants from different demographic backgrounds was performed. The results demonstrated demographic factors related to variations in pooled rideshare usage rates. Findings from this study explore the impacts of demographic factors on people's choices in ridesharing and provide important information for the modeling and optimization of ridesharing transportation systems.

Interfacial Strong Coupling and Negative Dispersion of Propagating Polaritons in Freestanding Oxide Membranes

Membranes of complex oxides like perovskite SrTiO3 extend the multi-functional promise of oxide electronics into the nanoscale regime of 2D materials. Here, it is demonstrated that freestanding oxide membranes supply a reconfigurable platform for nano-photonics based on propagating surface phonon polaritons. Infrared near-field imaging and spectroscopy enabled by a tunable ultrafast laser are applied to study pristine nano-thick SrTiO3 membranes prepared by hybrid molecular beam epitaxy. As predicted by coupled mode theory, it is found that strong coupling of interfacial polaritons realizes symmetric and antisymmetric hybridized modes with simultaneously tunable negative and positive group velocities. By resolving reflection of these propagating modes from membrane edges, defects, and substrate structures, their dispersion is quantified with position-resolved nano-spectroscopy. Remarkably, polariton negative dispersion is found to be both robust and tunable through choice of membrane dielectric environment and thickness, and proposes a novel design for in-plane Veselago lensing harnessing this control. This work lays the foundation for tunable transformation optics at the nanoscale using polaritons in a wide range of freestanding complex oxide membranes.

An approximate solution to improve computational efficiency of impedance-type payload load prediction

The computational efficiency of the impedance type loads prediction method was studied. Three goals were addressed: devise a method to make the impedance method operate more efficiently in the computer; assess the accuracy and convenience of the method for determining the effect of design changes; and investigate the use of the method to identify design changes for reduction of payload loads. The method is suitable for calculation of dynamic response in either the frequency or time domain. It is concluded that: the choice of an orthogonal coordinate system will allow the impedance method to operate more efficiently in the computer; the approximate mode impedance technique is adequate for determining the effect of design changes, and is applicable for both statically determinate and statically indeterminate payload attachments; and beneficial design changes to reduce payload loads can be identified by the combined application of impedance techniques and energy distribution review techniques.

A Fluid Solver for Studying Torsional Galloping in Solar-Tracking PV Panel Arrays

Solar-tracking photovoltaic arrays are susceptible to aeroelastic fluttering during high-wind events. This dynamic fluttering behavior can grow in amplitude until the panels enter an unstable mode known as torsional galloping which can lead to panel failure or total array destruction. To better understand the physics of the torsional galloping phenomenon, and to inform the discussion around panel design and recommended panel stow positions during high wind events, a fluid-structure interaction solver composed of a simulated atmospheric boundary layer with simplified panel structural responses was designed. The simulation choices and features of this solver were informed by the geometry and physical properties of an experimental panel array known to exhibit torsional galloping behavior during hind-wind events. These simulations revealed that the torsional galloping instability is driven by a combination of cyclic vortex shedding from the sun-facing side of the panel and the elastic properties of the torque tube linking the panel assemblies. Testing different stow angles across a range of wind speeds indicates that panels are generally more stable when stowed at negative angles where the leading edge is closer to the ground, hypothesized to be due to ground-blocking effects.

Wind Turbine Aeroelastic Stability in OpenFAST

Wind turbines are growing in size and increasingly suffer from aeroelastic instabilities. Unfortunately, numerical models often show inconsistent results during verification studies. We address this gap by first introducing novel linearization capabilities within the open-source aero-hydro-servo-elastic framework OpenFAST. Next, a code-to-code benchmark study is presented that compares modal parameters between OpenFAST and HAWCStab2 for a land-based version of the International Energy Agency 15-MW reference wind turbine modeled with quasi-steady aerodynamics. The two solvers are in strong agreement except for discrepancies in the second rotor flapwise modes. The differences are attributed to the torsional flexibility of the tower, which is assumed torsionally stiff in the OpenFAST model. Work is ongoing to close this modeling gap. The aeroelastic stability of a low-specific-power land-based wind turbine is also investigated. The impact of design choices is discussed, high-lighting how narrow the margins are between a stable design and an unstable design.

Organic Electrochemical Transistor Channel Materials: Copolymerization Versus Physical Mixing of Glycolated and Alkoxylated Polymers

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) feature a polymer channel capable of conducting both ions and electronic charges. The choice of the channel material is critical for OECT performance. Many efforts have focused on improving performance via the chemical tunability of conjugated polymers – through backbone, side chain, and molar mass engineering – leading to useful design principles for accumulation-mode OECT materials. However, tuning the chemical structure of conjugated polymers often requires time-consuming optimization of the synthesis route. Meanwhile, variations in molar mass, dispersity, structural defects, and metal content present challenges when attempting to analyze the detailed effects of structural modifications, as multiple performance-determining factors are often (unintentionally) changed at the same time. Therefore, this study explores blended channel materials obtained by physically mixing glycolated and alkoxylated polymers in different ratios, and compares their OECT performance with the corresponding statistical copolymers. It is shown that mixing two well-performing materials creates blends that enable rational tuning of the transistor properties without compromising on performance. Thus, channels based on blends of alkoxylated and glycolated polymers hold promise for OECT technology with tailored response, as only two materials are needed to achieve any desired side chain ratio, simplifying the optimization of OECT characteristics.

Design and Analysis of an Integrated Additively Manufactured Test Article for Plasma-Facing Components

Current plasma-facing components (PFCs) used in helium-cooled divertor modules are complex structures with tungsten tile, steel sleeve components, and cartridges, all assembled in a helium-cooled multiple jet (HEMJ) structure. The goal of this project is to simplify the complex PFC design using additive manufacturing techniques to create a single integrated tungsten test article. Apart from the flexibility this opens up in exploring a wide array of geometries for the article, having a single integrated article significantly reduces the number of joints and parts in the article, thus reducing chances of leaks. A process called electron beam melting has shown to produce very high-density samples and unique geometries, enabling HEMJ or similar designs. To validate and optimize this novel design, the model underwent a series of computational fluid dynamics and finite element analysis simulations to replicate steady-state heat flux in the divertors. The simulations presented in this study consider a steady-state base heat flux of 5 MW/m 2 , with water serving as the coolant. Future research will explore the use of helium as a coolant, simulate edge-localized-mode conditions, and include experimental validation. Since 3D-printed tungsten is anisotropic, the build direction versus build plane of the article are taken into consideration for the test article strength. Because of the high operating temperatures and low ductility of tungsten, thermal creep and brittle fracture are important failure mechanisms to consider. In conclusion, the cap is evaluated with various flow velocities and nozzle diameters, and an optimal design choice is made for which this cap will survive the divertor conditions with a conservative safety margin.

Numerical study of spherical Taylor-Couette flow

A new technique to simulate Taylor vortices in a spherical gap between a rotating inner sphere and a stationary outer one has been developed and tested. Paths leading to zero-, one-, and two-vortex flows are designed heuristically. Fictitious symmetric boundaries near the equator are imposed, and the choice of the location of the fictitious boundaries is determined by either one- or two-vortex flow being stimulated. The imposition of one or two fictitious boundaries during the initial calculation generates the state suitable for one-or two-vortex flow to exist. After removing the fictitious boundaries, the flow settles down into its own attractor. Using this method, the three steady flow modes can be simulated by using a half domain. The technique can converge to desired flows very fast, and its results show excellent agreement with experimental ones.
