Can Zn isotopes in sediments record past eutrophication of freshwater lakes? A pilot study at Lake Baldegg (Switzerland)

In this study, the speciation and isotopic composition of Zn were traced across the sediments of a freshwater lake that experienced one hundred years of strong eutrophication, in order to assess the potential of sedimentary Zn isotopes to record such an environmental disturbance. Here, the results indicate that the sedimentary Zn isotope signal varied with the change from pre-eutrophic to eutrophic conditions in the investigated lake. The average δ 66 Zn JMC value of the dominantly allochthonous lithogenic sediments deposited during the pre-eutrophic period was +0.27‰ ±0.05‰ (i.e. similar to the δ 66 Zn JMC value of +0.28‰ ±0.05‰ proposed for Bulk Silicate Earth), while enhanced autochthonous biochemical sedimentation during the eutrophic period resulted in significantly lower δ 66 Zn JMC values down to +0.04‰ ±0.06‰. Synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy data revealed a concomitant change in Zn speciation from a dominant fraction of Zn in clay minerals during the pre-eutrophic period to a major fraction of Zn in ZnS during the eutrophic period. A linear regression relating the sedimentary Zn isotope signal to the fraction of Zn in ZnS indicated δ 66 Zn JMC values of +0.27‰ ±0.06‰ and 0.00‰ ±0.08‰ for Zn in clay minerals and in ZnS, respectively. The enrichment of light Zn in ZnS in the eutrophic sediments is tentatively attributed to enhanced biological uptake of light Zn in the water column, which resulted in an enhanced flux of organic-bound Zn towards the sediments and further transformation of organic Zn into ZnS upon biomass mineralization during early diagenesis. This hypothesis is in agreement with the fractionation towards lighter Zn reported for both biological uptake of Zn and ZnS precipitation. The results of this study emphasize the potential of sedimentary Zn isotopes to register past eutrophic periods in freshwater lakes, and thus to serve as a probe of paleo-environmental conditions and/or past land use at the catchment scale.

Thermal conductivity degradation due to radiation-induced amorphization in U 3 Si 2 : A pilot study

Here, in this study, we investigate the thermal conductivity of U 3 Si 2 amorphized by ion irradiation using 84 MeV 136 Xe ions at 190 °C. The suspended-bridge method was utilized to measure the thermal conductivity, allowing for a detailed analysis of the specimen while minimizing interference from other crystalline phases. Our results indicate that the thermal conductivity of amorphous U 3 Si 2 is significantly lower than that of unirradiated crystalline U 3 Si 2 . These findings are consistent with recent studies on in-pile-irradiated U 3 Si 2 samples that consider the effects of U 3 Si 2 amorphization, fission gas bubbles, and other impurities.

Estimation of pipe failure frequencies in the absence of operational experience data: A pilot study

Probabilistic failure metrics such as leak frequency and rupture frequency are commonly used to characterize piping reliability. The methodologies for calculating the failure metrics rely on a complex set of input parameters. Operating experience data and experimental data play an important role in informing the different input parameters. The paper describes results and conclusions of a coordinated research project to benchmark three different reliability models using a four-step procedure: reference case definition of relevance to advanced reactor designs, input parameter calibration, validation of results, and application of different methodologies upon completion of the calibration and validation steps. The reference case is a weld consisting of nickel-base alloy 152/52 and located within a primary pressure boundary of an advanced reactor. This alloy is a class of structural materials known to be highly resistant to stress corrosion cracking. Synergies between the different methods are noted and the importance of a multi-disciplinary approach to input parameter development is underscored. A key conclusion is that the three methods are equally suitable for estimating failure frequencies. In any specific application, a selection of the most practical or effective computational tool can be considered. The comparison of alternative models confirms and helps to gain confidence in the computed failure frequency estimates. The study was part of a coordinated research project organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Tracing back the birth environments of Type Ia supernova progenitor stars: a pilot study based on 44 early-type host galaxies

The environmental dependence of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) luminosities is well established, and efforts are being made to find its origin. Previous studies typically use the currently observed status of the host galaxy. However, given the delay time between the birth of the progenitor star and the SN Ia explosion, the currently observed status may differ from the birth environment of the SN Ia progenitor star. In this paper, employing the chemical evolution and accurately determined stellar population properties of 44 early-type host galaxies, we, for the first time, estimate the SN Ia progenitor star birth environment, specifically [Fe/H] Birth and [α/Fe] Birth . We show that [α/Fe] Birth has a $30.4^{\text{+10.6}}_{-10.1}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ wider range than the currently observed [α/Fe] Current , while the range of [Fe/H] Birth is not statistically different ($17.9^{\text{+26.0}}_{-27.1}{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$) to that of [Fe/H] Current . The birth and current environments of [Fe/H] and [α/Fe] are sampled from different populations (p-values of the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test <0.01). We find that light-curve fit parameters are insensitive to [Fe/H] Birth (<0.9σ for the non-zero slope), while a linear trend is observed with Hubble residuals (HRs) at the 2.4σ significance level. With [α/Fe] Birth , no linear trends (<1.1σ) are observed. Interestingly, we find that [α/Fe] Birth clearly splits the SN Ia sample into two groups: SN Ia exploded in [α/Fe] Birth -rich or [α/Fe ]Birth -poor environments. SNe Ia exploded in different [α/Fe] Birth groups have different weighted-means of light-curve shape parameters: 0.81 ± 0.33 (2.5σ). They are thought to be drawn from different populations (p-value = 0.01). Regarding SN Ia colour and HRs, there is no difference (<1.0σ) in the weighted-means and distribution (p-value > 0.27) of each [α/Fe] Birth group.

Plasma proteomic biomarkers of physical frailty in heart failure: a propensity score matched discovery-based pilot study

Background: Physical frailty is highly prevalent in heart failure (HF), but we lack an understanding of the underlying pathophysiology. Proteomics evaluation of plasma samples may elucidate potential mechanisms and biomarkers of physical frailty in HF. We aimed to identify plasma proteomic biomarkers that are differentially expressed between physically frail and non physically frail adults with HF. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a subset of data and plasma samples from a study of frailty among patients with New York Heart Association (NYHA) Functional Classification I-IV HF. Physical frailty was measured using the Frailty Phenotype Criteria. Propensity score matching was used to match pairs of physically frail (n = 20) vs. non-physically frail (n = 20) patients on clinical characteristics. Plasma samples were processed using a sensitive liquid chromatography mass spectrometry platform, utilizing a multiplexed tandem mass tag-labeled quantitative proteomics approach. Differentially expressed proteins were quantified individually using paired t tests with associated log fold change of 0.3 and Fisher’s combined p values. Results: The sample (n = 40) was 62.8±16.9 years old, 58% female, and 55% NYHA Class III/IV. Proteomics analysis revealed 7 proteins differentially expressed using full differential criteria: matrix metalloproteinase-14 was downregulated in frailty, and copine-1, low affinity immunoglobulin gamma Fc region receptor III-A and III-B, probable non-functional immunoglobulin kappa variable 2D-24, glutathione S-transferase Mu 1, and argininosuccinate lyase were upregulated in frailty. Conclusions: Proteomic biomarkers related to the immune system, stress response, and detoxification were differentially expressed between physically frail and non-physically frail adults with HF.

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) Improves Empathy and Recognition of Facial Emotions Conveying Threat in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study

Introduction: Empathy is critical for human interactions to become shared and meaningful, and it is facilitated by the expression and processing of facial emotions. Deficits in empathy and facial emotion recognition are associated with individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), with specific concerns over inaccurate recognition of facial emotion expressions conveying a threat. Yet, the number of evidenced interventions for facial emotion recognition and processing (FERP), emotion, and empathy remains limited, particularly for adults with ASD. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a noninvasive brain stimulation, may be a promising treatment modality to safely accelerate and/or enhance treatment interventions to increase their efficacy. Methods: This study investigates the effectiveness of FERP, emotion, and empathy treatment interventions paired with tDCS for adults with ASD. Differences in scores on the Empathy Quotient (EQ) and on a FERP test were predicted for verum tDCS when compared to sham. Verum/sham tDCS was randomly assigned in a within-subjects, double-blinded design in adults with ASD without intellectual disability. Results: Verum tDCS significantly improved EQ scores and FERP scores for emotions that conveyed threat. Conclusions: These results suggest the potential for increasing the efficacy of treatment interventions by pairing them with tDCS for individuals with ASD.

Characterizing the Small-Scale Dynamical, Ice Microphysical, and Residual Aerosol Properties of Mid-Latitude Cold Clouds: A Pilot Study (Final Report)

Our understanding of cirrus clouds has been advancing rapidly due to improvements in measurements made inside clouds, computer cloud models, and laboratory experimentation. This advancement in knowledge has made it clear that cirrus are complicated systems where the intricate interactions among dynamic air motions, solar and terrestrial radiation, ice crystal growth, and water and air chemistry can substantially influence cirrus structure and evolution. Measurements made inside clouds have shown that cirrus crystals are often complex with shapes that are often unclassifiable, especially at small sizes. Laboratory measurements have revealed that the ice crystal surface is complex, even at small sizes. Recent laboratory and satellite studies show that this surface complexity modifies the radiative properties of cirrus clouds in important ways. Moreover, observations and computer cloud modeling work show that the larger and smaller scale properties of cirrus are sensitive to the interplay between small-scale air motions and the aerosol articles upon which cirrus ice crystals form. Taken together, these studies indicate that accurately accounting for the radiative properties of cirrus clouds requires knowing the air motions and aerosol properties that influence the number concentration and crystal size, along with an understanding of the surface properties of vapor grown ice. Although this prior work has been illuminating, there have been few studies that provide detailed shape and surface complexity measurements for the small ice crystals that often compose cirrus clouds.

Incipient Sensor Fault Impacts on Building Performance Through HVAC Controls: A Pilot Study

Sensors are crucial input components for HVAC controls. Studies show faults are common for buidings and HVAC systems. Sensors with faults will compromise the control perfrormance regardless how advanced of the control algorithms. Majority studies assume the sensor fault to be constant the whole year. In reality, the sensor faults might evolve or develop with time, which is essentially the incipient (i.e. evolving) fault. The incipient sensor faults impacts remain a research gap. This study aims to investigate the incipient sensor fault impacts to control sequences of multi-zone VAV boxes and AHU system following the ASHRAE Guideline 36-2018: High-Performance Sequences of Operation.
