Optical damage considerations in the design of the matter in extreme condition upgrade (MEC-U) laser systems

The Matter in Extreme Conditions Upgrade (MEC-U) project is a major upgrade to the MEC instrument of the LINAC Coherent Light Source (LCLS) X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) user facility at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. Here, the envisioned MEC upgrade will significantly enhance the capabilities of the pump laser sources in current MEC experimental station, boosting the energy of the nanosecond shock driver from 100 J to the kJ level, and increasing the power and repetition rate of the short pulse laser from 25 TW at 5 Hz to 1 PW at 10 Hz rate. Building such high energy/power pump laser systems presents challenges to minimize and mitigate against laser-induced optical damage. Here, as part of the system design, we have identified the optics at high-risk to damage and we have designed the laser systems to mitigate against these damage risks to ensure sustained facility operation.

Control over pulsed operation modes of an erbium-doped fibre laser passively mode-locked via nonlinear polarisation rotation

We have experimentally demonstrated the possibility of controlling pulse generation modes of an erbium-doped fibre ring laser operating in the anomalous dispersion regime and passively mode-locked via nonlinear polarisation rotation. It has been shown that individual adjustment of the pump power and intracavity polarisation controllers leads to changes in pulse generation mode, without changing the cavity. We have evaluated the key spectral, temporal and energetic characteristics of the observed pulse generation modes. (control of laser radiation parameters. active media)

Adaptive system for wavefront correction of the PEARL laser facility

The results of the operation of a wavefront correction system based on a deformable bimorph mirror of the PEARL subpetawatt laser facility are presented. An improvement in the quality of focusing of laser radiation, which led to an increase in the Strehl ratio from 0.3 to 0.6, is demonstrated. The features of the compensation for phase distortions of the wavefront in the case of a low pulse repetition rate, as well as the correct allowance for the noise of the CCD camera when calculating the Strehl ratio are investigated. Qualification Testing of Laser Diode Pump Arrays for a Space-Based 2-micron Coherent Doppler Lidar

The 2-micron thulium and holmium-based lasers being considered as the transmitter source for space-based coherent Doppler lidar require high power laser diode pump arrays operating in a long pulse regime of about 1 msec. Operating laser diode arrays over such long pulses drastically impact their useful lifetime due to the excessive localized heating and substantial pulse-to-pulse thermal cycling of their active regions. This paper describes the long pulse performance of laser diode arrays and their critical thermal characteristics. A viable approach is then offered that allows for determining the optimum operational parameters leading to the maximum attainable lifetime.

High-speed volumetric imaging of formaldehyde in a lifted turbulent jet flame using an acousto-optic deflector

The development of high-speed volumetric laser-induced fluorescence measurements of formaldehyde (CH 2 O-LIF) using a pulse-burst laser operated at a repetition rate of 100 kHz is presented here. A novel laser scanning system employing an acousto-optic deflector (AOD) enables quasi-4D CH 2 O-LIF imaging at a scan frequency of 10 kHz. The diagnostic capability of time-resolved volumetric imaging is demonstrated in a partially premixed DME/air lifted turbulent jet flame near the flame base. Simultaneous imaging of laser beam profiles is performed to account for the laser pulse energy fluctuation and laser sheet inhomogeneity. With the accurate registration of laser sheet positions, the volumetric reconstruction of CH 2 O-LIF signals is performed within a detection volume of 17.3 × 11.9 × 2.3 mm 3 with an average out-of-plane spatial resolution of 250μm. A surface detection algorithm with adaptive thresholding is used to determine the global maximum intensity gradient by calculating gradient percentiles. The flame topology characteristics are investigated by evaluating the 3D curvatures of CH 2 O surfaces. Curvatures calculated using 2D data systematically underestimate the full 3D curvature due to the lack of out-of-plane information. The inner surfaces near the turbulent fuel jet exhibit higher probabilities of large mean curvature than the outer surfaces. The saddle and cylindrical structures are dominant on both the inner and outer surfaces and the elliptic structures occur with lower probability. The results suggest that the damping of turbulent fluctuations by the temperature increase through the CH 2 O region reduces the curvature, but the local structure topology remains self-similar.

Holographic reflective Bragg gratings of gain and their role in the operation of high-power pulsed lasers

The influence of reflective Bragg gratings that are formed in an active medium due to the spatial periodic modulation of gain on the spectral properties of lasing are investigated by an example of a pulsed Nd : YAG laser. It is shown that, at a certain choice of the formation regime of reflective gratings of gain, the lasing bandwidth can be reduced by a factor of 3 – 5, with a corresponding increase in the pulse energy and significant improvement of spatial beam quality. On-target uniformity of the OMEGA 60-beam inertial confinement fusion laser

Successful direct-drive inertial confinement fusion (ICF) experiments require excellent on-target laser 9 irradiance uniformity maintained over the duration of the pulse. Achieving this symmetry relies on maintaining an 10 energy, power, and fluence balance among all beams in a multibeam laser system. As a result of the improvements 11 described in this paper, the OMEGA 60-beam laser performance has been assessed at approximately 2% on-target 12 irradiance nonuniformity using an updated performance assessment metric that accounts for the laser diagnostic noise 13 floor. The performance is measurement-limited, prompting the need for an improved diagnostic suite. This manuscript 14 provides a comprehensive first-order assessment of extant status of on-target energy, power, and fluence uniformity 15 and explores avenues for improvements.

NIR fluorescence lifetime macroscopic imaging with a novel time-gated SPAD camera

SwissSPAD3 is the latest of a family of widefield time-gated SPAD imagers developed for fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLI) applications. Its distinctive features are (i) the ability to define shorter gates than its predecessors (width W < 1 ns), (ii) support for laser repetition rates up to at least 80 MHz and (iii) a dual-gate architecture providing an effective duty cycle of 100%. We present widefield macroscopic FLI measurements of short lifetime NIR dyes, analyzed using the phasor approach. Furthermore, the results are compared with those previously obtained with SwissSPAD2 and to theoretical predictions.

An alternative method of changing the pulse duration in a stretcher-compressor pair by changing the gas pressure in the compressor

The relatively narrow bandwidth of neodymium glass requires a much larger stretch ratio of chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) systems. This factor, together with a large incident angle on the gratings, makes glass CPA systems extremely sensitive to the refractive index of the medium in the stretcher-compressor. High sensitivity of the stretcher-compressor pair for hybrid optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification and an Nd:glass laser to the refractive index was demonstrated in air, vacuum, and carbon dioxide, and a pulse duration close to the transform limit was reached. An alternative way to change the pulse duration was proposed. The pulse duration from the best compression of 500 fs to 30 ps was smoothly varied by changing the air pressure from 10 -6 Torr to 1 atm in the compressor and up to 52 ps in carbon dioxide, while the stretcher and compressor remained untouched. Finally, excellent agreement of the measured pulse duration with theoretical calculations was demonstrated.

CH(A, B-X) fluorescence from vacuum ultraviolet excitation of CH3

The fluorescence due to single-photon and two-photon excitation of CH3 produced by the reaction of CH4 with F or Cl in a flow tube is investigated experimentally. The excitation source is an excimer laser operating with pulse duration 6 nsec and repetition rate 20 Hz, and the fluorescence is observed using a 0.25-m spectrometer and a 1024-channel diode array; the results are presented graphically. Emission is detected at 157 nm (with approximate cross section 8 x 10 to the -19th sq cm) and 193 nm, but not at 248 nm. The applicability of these data to studies of hydrocarbon combustion, the methane oxidation cycle in the atmosphere, interstellar molecule formation, and diamond film fabrication is indicated.
