Robust three-dimensional type-II Dirac semimetal state in SrAgBi

Topological semimetals such as Dirac, Weyl or nodal line semimetals are widely studied for their peculiar properties including high Fermi velocities, small effective masses and high magnetoresistance. When the Dirac cone is tilted, exotic phenomena could emerge whereas materials hosting such states are promising for photonics and plasmonics applications. Here we present evidence that SrAgBi is a spin-orbit coupling-induced type-II three-dimensional Dirac semimetal featuring tilted Dirac cone at the Fermi energy. Near charge compensation and Fermi surface characteristics are not much perturbed by 7% of vacancy defects on the Ag atomic site, suggesting that SrAgBi could be a material of interest for observation of robust optical and spintronic topological quantum phenomena.

Band Engineering of Dirac Semimetals Using Charge Density Waves

New developments in the field of topological matter are often driven by materials discovery, including novel topological insulators, Dirac semimetals and Weyl semimetals. In the last few years, large efforts have been performed to classify all known inorganic materials with respect to their topology. Unfortunately, a large number of topological materials suffer from non-ideal band structures. For example, topological bands are frequently convoluted with trivial ones, and band structure features of interest can appear far below the Fermi level. This leaves just a handful of materials that are intensively studied. Finding strategies to design new topological materials is a solution. Here we introduce a new mechanism that is based on charge density waves and non-symmorphic symmetry to design an idealized Dirac semimetal. We then show experimentally that the antiferromagnetic compound GdSb 0.46 Te 1.48 is a nearly ideal Dirac semimetal based on the proposed mechanism, meaning that most interfering bands at the Fermi level are suppressed. Finally, its highly unusual transport behavior points to a thus far unknown regime, in which Dirac carriers with Fermi energy very close to the node seem to gradually localize in the presence of lattice and magnetic disorder.

Band Energy Dependence of Defect Formation in the Topological Semimetal Cd3As2

Cadmium Arsenide (Cd3As2) is a prototypical Dirac semimetal that manifests topological properties in a 3D bulk material. In defect-free Cd3As2, the Fermi level lies at a minimum in the density of states at the Dirac point, but experimentally it forms with excess electron carriers and an elevated EF, thereby masking the topological features. To computationally study the self-doping of Cd3As2, we combine density functional theory (DFT) calculations for defect formation energies with quasi-particle self-consistent GW (QSGW) electronic structure calculations. We demonstrate an innate dependence of the point defect formation energies on carrier concentrations and use the QSGW calculated density of states to extrapolate formation energies to arbitrary electron concentrations. This approach allows the quantitative modeling of thermodynamic defect equilibria in topological semimetals and is used to predict how Cd3As2 growth conditions affect the position of EF relative to the Dirac point.

Semi-Dirac Fermions in a Topological Metal

Topological semimetals with massless Dirac and Weyl fermions represent the forefront of quantum materials research. In two dimensions, a peculiar class of fermions that are massless in one direction and massive in the perpendicular direction was predicted 16 years ago. These highly exotic quasiparticles—the semi-Dirac fermions—ignited intense theoretical and experimental interest but remain undetected. Using magneto-optical spectroscopy, we demonstrate the defining feature of semi-Dirac fermions— B 2 / 3 scaling of Landau levels—in a prototypical nodal-line metal ZrSiS. In topological metals, including ZrSiS, nodal lines extend the band degeneracies from isolated points to lines, loops, or even chains in the momentum space. With calculations and theoretical modeling, we pinpoint the observed semi-Dirac spectrum to the crossing points of nodal lines in ZrSiS. Crossing nodal lines exhibit a continuum absorption spectrum but with singularities that scale as B 2 / 3 at the crossing. Our work sheds light on the hidden quasiparticles emerging from the intricate topology of crossing nodal lines and highlights the potential to explore quantum geometry with linear optical responses. Topological surface states in strained Dirac semimetal thin films

We computationally study the Fermi arc states in a Dirac semimetal, both in a semi-infinite slab and in the thin-film limit. We use Cd 3 As 2 as a model system, and include perturbations that break the C-4 symmetry and inversion symmetry while mirror symmetries remain. The surface states are protected by the mirror symmetries present in the bulk states and thus survive these perturbations. Additionally, the Fermi arc states persist down to very thin films, thinner than presently measured experimentally, but are affected by breaking the symmetry of the Hamiltonian. Recent experimental observations of transport in Cd 3 As 2 films strongly suggest transport by surface states. Our findings are consistent with those observations in that we show that Fermi arc states can survive to rather thin films, and our results also suggest that symmetry-breaking terms that preserve the Fermi arc states nevertheless can have a profound effect in the thin film limit.

Topological descendants of a multicritical Dirac semimetal with magnetism and strain

The past decades have witnessed a transformation in characterizing condensed matter systems with topology. Aided by a refined understanding of topological band structures with crystalline symmetries that has emerged recently, many electronic phases have been identified, and a plethora of materials have been predicted to host properties and functionalities. A key underlying question, also with respect to future application, is to what extent the related physical features can be manipulated, especially in the context of magnetic order. Here, we describe a paradigmatic semimetal that simultaneously incorporates multiple and sometimes conflicting topology which guarantees gaplessness and leads to an exceptionally rich family of descendent phases on lowering symmetry. We predict that this multicritical phase is realized in EuTl 2 . Starting from the parent semimetallic state, which already separates two topological insulating regimes, the interplay of inherent magnetism and strain allows for an exceptionally rich phase diagram of topological descendant states.

Topological Nernst effect, anomalous Nernst effect, and anomalous thermal Hall effect in the Dirac semimetal Fe 3 Sn 2

Topological semimetals have been a focal point of research in recent years. One of the salient characters of topological semimetals is the anomalous Hall effect arising from the nontrivial momentum-space Berry phase. In contrast, anomalous transverse thermoelectric coefficient and thermal Hall effect are much less explored up to date. In this paper, we report thermoelectric and thermal transport properties of Fe 3 Sn 2 , a prototypical Dirac semimetal. We find that Fe 3 Sn 2 exhibits large topological Nernst effect which is associated with the non-zero spin chirality of the skyrmion bubble phase. Furthermore, Fe 3 Sn 2 shows prominent anomalous thermal Hall effect and anomalous Nernst effect with features similar to the anomalous Hall effect. The anomalous Nernst signal is about 2.1 μV/K at room temperature, which is comparable to the largest value reported thus far. These results highlight the synergic effects of Berry phase in both real space and momentum space of Fe 3 Sn 2 , and this study demonstrates an effective strategy of investigating topological materials by measuring their transverse thermal and thermoelectric responses.

Bicircular Light Floquet Engineering of Magnetic Symmetry and Topology and Its Application to the Dirac Semimetal Cd 3 As 2

Here, we show that bicircular light (BCL) is a versatile way to control magnetic symmetries and topology in materials. The electric field of BCL, which is a superposition of two circularly polarized light waves with frequencies that are integer multiples of each other, traces out a rose pattern in the polarization plane that can be chosen to break selective symmetries, including spatial inversion. Using a realistic low-energy model, we theoretically demonstrate that the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2 is a promising platform for BCL Floquet engineering. Without strain, BCL irradiation induces a transition to a noncentrosymmetric magnetic Weyl semimetal phase with tunable energy separation between the Weyl nodes. In the presence of strain, we predict the emergence of a magnetic topological crystalline insulator with exotic unpinned surface Dirac states that are protected by a combination of twofold rotation and time reversal (2') and can be controlled by light.

Coexisting kagome and heavy fermion flat bands in YbCr 6 Ge 6

Flat bands, electronic states with nearly dispersionless energy-momentum structure, provide fertile ground for unconventional quantum phases. Recent observations of flat bands at the Fermi level in kagome metals open the possibility of unifying topology and correlation-driven heavy-fermion physics. Here we show that topology and heavy-fermion correlations coexist in the layered kagome metal YbCr 6 Ge 6 . At high temperatures, an intrinsic kagome flat band—arising from frustrated hopping on the kagome lattice—dominates the Fermi level. Upon cooling, localized Yb 4f-states hybridize with the topological kagome flat bands, transforming this state into momentum-independent Kondo resonance states across the entire Brillouin zone. Topological analysis of the hybridization gaps reveals filling-tunable weak and strong topological Kondo-insulating regimes, and identifies a topological Dirac–Kondo semimetal. Taken together, these results identify YbCr 6 Ge 6 as a prototype of a topological heavy-fermion system and a platform where geometric frustration, strong correlations, and topology converge, with broad implications for correlated quantum matter.

Nernst power factor and figure of merit in the compensated semimetal ScSb

Recently, topological semimetals have emerged as strong candidates for solid-state thermomagnetic refrigerators due to their enhanced Nernst effect. This enhancement arises from the combined contributions of the Berry-curvature-induced anomalous Nernst coefficient associated with topological bands and the normal Nernst effect resulting from synergistic electron-hole compensation. Generally, these two effects are intertwined in topological semimetals, making it challenging to evaluate them independently. Here, we report the observation of a high Nernst effect in the electron-hole compensated semimetal ScSb with topologically trivial electronic band structures. Remarkably, we find a high maximum Nernst power factor of 𝑃⁢𝐹 𝑁 ∼ 35 × 10 −4 W m −1 K −2 in ScSb. The Nernst thermopower (𝑆 𝑥⁢𝑦 ) exhibits a peak of ∼ 47 µ⁢V/K at 12 K and 14 T, yielding a Nernst figure of merit (𝑧 𝑁 ) of ∼ 28 × 10 −4 K −1 . Notably, despite its trivial electronic band structure, both the 𝑃⁢𝐹 𝑁 and 𝑧 𝑁 values of ScSb are comparable to those observed in topological semimetals with Dirac band dispersions. In conclusion, the origin of the large Nernst signal in ScSb is explained by compensated electron and hole carriers, through Hall resistivity measurements, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations.

Coexistence of Bulk-Nodal and Surface-Nodeless Cooper Pairings in a Superconducting Dirac Semimetal

The interplay of nontrivial topology and superconductivity in condensed matter physics gives rise to exotic phenomena. However, materials are extremely rare where it is possible to explore the full details of the superconducting pairing. Here, we investigate the momentum dependence of the superconducting gap distribution in a novel Dirac material PdTe. Using high resolution, low temperature photoemission spectroscopy, we establish it as a spin-orbit coupled Dirac semimetal with the topological Fermi arc crossing the Fermi level on the (010) surface. This spin-textured surface state exhibits a fully gapped superconducting Cooper pairing structure below $T_{c}$ ~ 4.5 K. Moreover, we find a node in the bulk near the Brillouin zone boundary, away from the topological Fermi arc. In conclusion, these observations not only demonstrate the band resolved electronic correlation between topological Fermi arc states and the way it induces Cooper pairing in PdTe, but also provide a rare case where surface and bulk states host a coexistence of nodeless and nodal gap structures enforced by spin-orbit coupling.

Electronic and magnetic properties of the topological semimetal SmMg 2 Bi 2

Dirac semimetals show nontrivial physical properties and can host exotic quantum states like Weyl semimetals and topological insulators under suitable external conditions. Here, by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements (ARPES) and first-principle calculations, we demonstrate that the Zintl-phase compound SmMg 2 Bi 2 is in close proximity to a topological Dirac semimetallic state. ARPES results show a Dirac-like band crossing at the zone center near the Fermi level (E F ), which is further confirmed by first-principle calculations. Theoretical studies also reveal that SmMg 2 Bi 2 belongs to a Z 2 topological class and hosts spin-polarized states around the E F . Zintl's theory predicts that the valence state of Sm in this material should be Sm 2+ , however, we detect many Sm-4f multiplet states (flat-bands) whose energy positions and relative intensities suggest the presence of both dominant Sm 2+ and minor Sm 3+ . The small concentration (2.5%) of Sm 3+ in the bulk of a crystal is inferred to arise from Sm vacancies in the crystal. It is also evident that these flat bands and other dispersive states are strongly hybridized when they cross each other. Due to the presence of Sm 3+ ions, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility χ (T) shows a Curie-Weiss-like contribution in the low-temperature region, in addition to the Van Vleck-like behavior expected for the Sm 2+ ions. The present study will help to better understand the electronic structure, magnetism, and transport properties of related materials.

Epitaxial Integration of Dirac Semimetals with Si(001)

Topological semimetals contain novel combinations of properties that make them useful in a variety of applications, including optoelectronics, spintronics and low energy computing, and catalysis. Although they have been grown with high quality as bulk single crystals, incorporation with semiconductor substrates will ultimately be required to maximize their technological reach. Here, epitaxial growth of the Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 on Si(001) is demonstrated through two routes. First, Cd3As2(112) epilayers are grown on Si(001) via an intermediate CdTe(111) buffer layer. Second, Cd3As2(112) is grown directly on Si(001). This work sets the foundation for integration of novel semimetal materials with existing CMOS technology.

THz Plasmonics and Topological Optics of Weyl Semimetals

THz magneto-optical properties of 3D topological Weyl semimetals were investigated with both THz spectroscopy and THz pump-probe measurements. The unique THz effects predicted in these materials may have important applications in THz technology. The electronic band structure was characterized spectroscopically through THz zero-field reflectance and/or cyclotron resonance measurements. The studies included the dynamic chiral pumping and the study of the predicted novel magneto-electric effects arising from the underlying Berry curvature and magneto plasmonic-like effects in the absence of an applied magnetic field. Chiral pumping in the extreme quantum limit was studied on Weyl semimetals to directly probe the chiral N=0 Landau level. Non-linear pump-probe measurements were used to measure the chiral pumping lifetime. Solids with topologically robust electronic states exhibit unusual electronic and optical transport properties that do not exist in other materials. A particularly interesting example is chiral charge pumping, the so-called chiral anomaly, in recently discovered topological Weyl and Dirac semimetals, where simultaneous application of parallel DC electric and magnetic fields creates an imbalance in the number of carriers of opposite topological charge (chirality). In an earlier study we investigated the Weyl metals Na 3 Bi and Cd 3 As 2 . In this grant we followed up with magneto-optical studies of TaAs, another Weyl semimetal. More recently, we have also characterized other Weyl and Dirac systems that have come on line. The Physics community is still looking for the “hydrogen atom” of the Weyl semimetal. CoSi is one promising new system which features Weyl node spacing comparable to the Brillouin zone size. This system may be suitable for study of the predicted chiral plasmons that arise from the Berry curvature in Weyl materials. In other experiments gates can be applied to the samples in order to study the Fermi arc surface states by modulation reflectance spectroscopy at THz frequencies.

Extremely large magnetoresistance in high-mobility SrNbO 3 /SrTiO 3 heterostructures

In this report an extremely large linear magnetoresistance (LMR) is a ubiquitous phenomenon emerging from topological Dirac and Weyl semimetals. However, the connection between an LMR and a nontrivial topology is under extensive debate. In this paper, by precisely controlling the thickness of SrNbO 3 thin films grown on SrTiO 3 substrates, we observe an LMR over a large carrier density range with a magnetoresistance as high as 150000% at a carrier density n~10 21 cm -3 , far away from the quantum-limit regime. The temperature-, magnetic-field-, and carrier-density-dependent LMR in SrNbO 3 /SrTiO 3 heterostructures provides compelling evidence of a mobility-driven LMR in coherent electronic systems. Our results uncover the general principle of an LMR and shed light on proper categorization of transport properties in topological and correlated materials.

Metal-to-insulator transition in oxide semimetals by anion doping

Dirac semimetals exhibiting nontrivial topological characteristics stand as exemplary parent compounds, offering great promise for the realization of novel electronic states. These materials also serve as a versatile platform for systematically investigating topological quantum phase transitions. In this study, we present compelling evidence of profound structural and transport phase shifts in a recently uncovered oxide Dirac semimetal, SrNbO3, achieved through effective in situ anion doping. Notably, a remarkable increase in resistivity of more than three orders of magnitude at room temperature is observed upon nitrogen-doping. The extent of electronic modulation in SrNbO3 is strongly correlated with the misfit strain, underscoring its phase instability to both chemical doping and crystallographic symmetry variations. Using first-principles calculations, we discern that elevating the level of nitrogen doping induces an upward shift in the conductive bands of SrNbO3-?N?. Consequently, a transition from a metallic state to an insulating state becomes apparent as the nitrogen concentration reaches a threshold of 1/3. This investigation sheds light on the potential of anion engineering in oxide Dirac semimetals, offering pathways for manipulating their physical properties. These insights hold promise for future applications that harness these materials for tailored functionalities.
