Scattering Calorimeter FY24 Deliverable Report

A simulation-based method has been developed to prototype new detector designs for nuclear data measurements utilizing neutron scattering. This method uses representative physics inputs for signal and background generation, full detector resolution smearing benchmarked by experimental data, and a neutron beam timing simulation to produce analyzable output like a physical measurement. A test case has been studied using a hybrid time-of-flight calorimeter detector for scattering cross-section measurements on 239 Pu with 1-5 MeV incident monoenergetic neutrons. Data analysis methods have been developed to perform event-level particle reconstruction and reaction channel discrimination. This analysis has been used to estimate the capability of the test detector to perform simultaneous scattering and fission cross section measurements, as well as its ability to provide neutron spectra and particle angular information.

Implementation of Johnson Noise Thermometry into Radiation Hardened Electronics

The random motion of charge carriers in an electrical conductor is a function of its temperature. This phenomenon generates an electrical signal, referred to as Johnson noise, that is present in all analog signals. Conversely, the temperature dependence of the Johnson noise spectrum also enables a direct measurement of absolute temperature, which can provide a secondary measurement of temperature when quantified using sensors such as resistive temperature devices (RTDs) in a process called Johnson noise thermometry (JNT). For nuclear environments, this is of particular interest in correcting for RTDs signal drift caused by accumulation, transmutation, and displacement damage caused by neutron and gamma irradiation.

Hard X-Ray Excess from the Magnificent Seven Neutron Stars

We report significant hard X-ray excesses in the energy range 2–8 keV for two nearby isolated neutron stars: RX J1856.6-3754 and RX J0420.0-5022. These neutron stars have previously been observed in soft X-rays to have nearly thermal spectra at temperatures ~100 eV, which are thought to arise from the warm neutron star surfaces. We find nontrivial hard X-ray spectra well above the thermal surface predictions with archival data from the XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray telescopes. We analyze possible systematic effects that could generate such spurious signals, such as nearby X-ray point sources and pileup of soft X-rays, but we find that the hard X-ray excesses are robust to these systematics to the extent that is possible to test. We also investigate possible sources of hard X-ray emission from the neutron stars and find no satisfactory explanation with known mechanisms, suggesting that a novel source of X-ray emission is at play. Here, we do not find high-significance hard X-ray excesses from the other five Magnificent Seven isolated neutron stars.

Grid stabilization using adjusted voltage regulator response to grid characteristics

Apparatus and methods are disclosed for control systems for improving stability of electrical grids by temporarily reducing voltage output of electrical generators responsive to transient events on an electrical grid. In one example of the disclosed technology, a controller is coupled is to an automatic voltage regulator, which in turn adjusts excitation current of an electrical generator responsive to changes in frequency detected for the electrical grid. Reducing the output voltage temporarily allows for smaller generators to provide power to the microgrid. Methods for selecting parameters determining how the controller generates a regulation signal used to adjust the excitation current are further disclosed.

RF signature detection for waveguide deformation

A radio frequency (RF) based waveguide health monitoring system is disclosed. The system employs an RF transmitter for launching a probe RF waveform into a waveguide. Reflections, etc., from the interior of the waveguide of the probe RF waveform create a signature RF waveform, with a health RF receiver receiving this resultant signature RF waveform. A health processing system analyzes the signature RF waveform, and when it detects a change indicative of a deformation of the waveguide, generates a warning signal. This change may be due to bends, flexes, vibrations (or changes in vibrations), or separations of the waveguide. The system may have low frequency, high frequency, or high frequency imaging modes. The system may employ a high-power probe RF waveform, thereby enabling a wireless charging system with power RF receivers located along the length of the waveguide providing additional functionality.

Smart controller with phantom inductor current sensing for switched mode power supplies

Voltage on the output terminal of an inductor is obtained as a first input signal to a control block (CB); the inductor has an input terminal connected to a power switch and driver block at a switching node. A sense input voltage is obtained on an output terminal of a sensing circuit that is not directly connected to the switching node, as a second input signal to the CB. A voltage is generated on a first output terminal of the CB and is selected such that the CB can use its first and second input signals to infer the current through the inductor. A pulse width modulation (PWM) signal is generated on a second output terminal of the CB, based on the inferred current through the inductor; the second output signal from the CB is provided to a PWM input terminal of the power switch and driver block.

Continuous dithered waveform averaging for high-fidelity digitization of repetitive signals

Methods and devices for digitizing an analog repetitive signal using waveform averaging are described. An example method includes generating a time-varying dither signal, receiving the analog repetitive signal comprising multiple instances of a waveform, wherein each waveform has a waveform duration, wherein an average of the time-varying dither signal over multiple waveform durations is substantially zero, and wherein the time-varying dither signal varies over each waveform duration, generating a timing alignment, combining each waveform with the corresponding portion of the time-varying dither signal over each waveform duration to produce an analog output signal, converting the analog output signal to a digital output signal, and producing, based on the timing alignment, a digital averaged signal based on averaging the multiple instances of the waveform in the analog output signal, wherein the timing alignment is used to align the multiple instances of the waveform in the analog output signal.

The CLAS12 High Threshold Cherenkov Counter

The High Threshold Cherenkov Counter (HTCC) is one of the detector systems of the CLAS12 spectrometer, and is used to generate a fast trigger signal in electron scattering experiments in the polar angle range from 5°to 35°. The HTCC is installed in front of the drift chambers and introduces a minimal amount of additional material within the acceptance. The HTCC is one unit whose core component is a multifocal mirror that consists of 60 lightweight ellipsoidal mirrors. It is important that the HTCC provides efficient coverage of the CLAS12 forward acceptance with no gaps. In order to achieve this, each sector of the CLAS12 Forward Detector is covered by 2 identical half-sector mirrors that focus Cherenkov light on 8 phototubes. The HTCC has a total of 48 channels with Electron Tubes 9823QKB photomultipliers that have a 5-in quartz face plate to detect Cherenkov light. The system provides rejection of charged -mesons with momenta below 4.8 GeV for the reliable identification of scattered electrons. In this paper the details of the design, construction, calibration, and performance results of the HTCC are presented

Influence of Joule Heating on the Stability of High Temperature Irradiation-resistant Thermocouples

Development of in-core instrumentation is driven by the pursuit of safer, more economic energy production from the perspective of both existing nuclear reactors and Generation IV reactor designs. Idaho National Laboratory has developed high-temperature irradiation-resistant thermocouples (HTIR-TCs) for temperature sensing inside Generation IV nuclear reactors. These thermocouples are composed of phosphorus-doped niobium (Nb-P) and lanthana-doped molybdenum (Mo-LaO) thermoelements, an alumina (Al2O3) insulation, and a niobium sheath. HTIR-TCs require an initial heat treatment exceeding the maximum service temperature to stabilize the generated electromotive force (EMF) signal. The mechanism behind the stabilization of the HTIR-TCs through traditional heat treatment methods is understood; however, the traditional heat treatment method is expensive, time consuming, and results in a heterogeneous microstructure. Therefore, we investigated a rapid method for stabilization and microstructure homogeneity, through Joule heating. This work evaluates the impact of Joule heating on the thermoelements’ microstructures, chemical stability, and mechanical properties so as to determine the mechanisms by which stabilization of the EMF signal occurs. Accordingly, during the Joule heat treatment, a secondary Nb3P phase coarsened along the length of the Nb-P thermoelement, along with the formation of an interaction region at the Al2O3/niobium interface. The interaction between the alumina insulation and the Nb-P thermoelement was also observed within the Mo-LaO thermoelement. Joule heating induced stability within the generated HTIR-TC EMF signal via the formation of secondary phases within the Nb-P and the interaction between the alumina insulation and the thermoelements.

Non-Gaussianity from explicit U(1)-breaking interactions

We investigate primordial non-Gaussianity (NG) arising from the explicit U(1) symmetry-breaking interactions during inflation involving a nearly massless axial component of a complex scalar field P. We analyze the induced NG parameter f NL under scenarios where the axial field functions as either a curvaton or cold dark matter (CDM). In the curvaton framework, there is a conventional contribution to the local NG of f NL ≃ -O(1). Additional positive local NG can result from either the self-interactions of axial field fluctuations, their interactions with a light radial partner, or kinetic mixing with the inflaton via U(1) symmetry-breaking terms. We identify parameter regions where the interactions lead to cancellations, suppressing the overall local NG to |f loc NL | ≲ O(0.1). In the CDM scenario, these interactions enhance the NG in the isocurvature fluctuations. Moreover, interactions between the axial field and another light scalar, such as a curvaton, can generate O(1) curvature NG signals and significant mixed curvature-isocurvature NGs that are within the reach of future experiments with σ(f loc NL ) ∼ 1. We also explore the role of a heavy radial field in generating oscillating correlation signals, noting that such signals can dominate the shape of the mixed adiabatic-isocurvature bispectrum. In certain cases, an oscillatory isocurvature bispectrum signal may be observable in the future, aiding in distinguishing between certain types of the U(1)-breaking self-interactions of the axial field.

Automated Signal Timing Plan Reconstruction Using High-Resolution Event-Based Controller Data for Digital Twins

Transportation digital twins are essential tools for evaluating emerging technologies such as connected and automated vehicles, adaptive traffic signal control, and mobility optimization strategies. Realistic digital twins require accurate emulation of real-world signal controllers and detailed signal timing plans. However, signal timing plans are often unavailable or difficult to access, forcing researchers and modelers to rely on assumed fixed timings or halt their analysis. To overcome this challenge, we present a method that directly estimates signal timing plan parameters using high-resolution, event-based data from traffic signal controllers. The proposed method extracts key parameters, including cycle length, offset, phase sequence, coordinated phases, phase-specific minimum and maximum green durations, vehicle extensions, and splits under coordination. A rule-based deterministic signal timing reconstruction algorithm based on traffic signal operation rules, such as those outlined in the Signal Timing Manual, is developed and validated. We evaluate this method, which uses high-resolution controller event logs and verified signal timing plans, on 94 signalized intersections in Nashville, Tennessee, demonstrating their ability to generate accurate, simulation-ready signal timing plans for tools such as SUMO and Vissim.
