The relationship between low cycle fatigue (LCF) and monotonic tensile fracture strain was investigated for cast Al-Cu-Mn-Zr alloys containing 6 and 9 wt% Cu at 250 °C. The 9% Cu alloy consisted of larger size and volume fraction of brittle intermetallic grain boundary particles that fractured during tensile tests to reduce the fracture strain by 50% compared to the 6% Cu alloy. We found that LCF life was similar between the two alloys and weakly influenced by the particles. LCF life and fracture strain were poorly correlated due to the dominant influence of particles on monotonic tensile crack but not on fatigue crack.
The combination of cytotoxic chemotherapy with radiation therapy (CRT) has resulted in significant improvements in clinical outcomes for patients with many locally advanced unresectable cancers. Only a small proportion of patients achieve pathologic complete responses to CRT; combination of CRT with targeted agents offers the promise of further improving treatment responses. However, numerous clinical trials have failed to show an improvement in clinical outcomes with the addition of targeted agents. To increase the accessibility of our screening method and accelerate the pace at which novel combinations with CRT are identified and incorporated into standard practices for treatments, we report details on screening method optimization, data generation, and downstream data analysis.

This study aimed to analyze how the addition of titanium (Ti) to TiAlTa alloys affects their mechanical properties (Young’s modulus and hardness) and oxidation behavior. Alloys with three different Ti additions and equi-atomic Al and Ta were fabricated with nominal compositions of 33Ti-33Al-33Ta at%, 50Ti-25Al-25Ta at%, and 70Ti-15Al-15Ta at%. Phase identification of as-processed and compositionally homogenized alloys was conducted by coupling various electron microscopy, diffraction, and chemical analysis techniques. Composition and structures were modeled using CALPHAD-based phase predictions and compared with experimental results. Each of the alloys exhibited a unique set of microstructures with distinctly different ordered precipitates, dependent on cooling rate and chemical composition. Subsequently, nanoindentation tests were performed at temperatures of 25°C, 250°C, 500°C, and 750°C. Oxidation studies were conducted under static air at 750°C for up to 200 h. 33Ti-33Al-33Ta at% and 70Ti-15Al-15Ta at% alloys showed higher hardness and modulus than 50Ti-25Al-25Ta at% at room temperature. The 50Ti-25Al-25Ta at% alloy exhibited higher hardness and modulus values but lower oxidation resistance at 750°C when compared with the other specimens. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments were conducted to further analyze the oxides present in the samples. Despite each sample displaying combinations of mixed oxide layers, TiO 2 was the preferred oxide forming in the 50Ti-25Al-25Ta composition, while the other samples preferred to form Al 2 O 3 . In conclusion, the findings from this systematic exploration of phase evolution in the TiAlTa alloy space provide insights for optimized material chemistries, processing, and properties.
Human cleavage and polyadenylation specificity factor (CPSF)73 (also known as CPSF3) is the endoribonuclease that catalyzes the cleavage reaction for the 3'-end processing of pre-mRNAs. The active site of CPSF73 is located at the interface between a metallo-β-lactamase domain and a β-CASP domain. Two metal ions are coordinated by conserved residues, five His and two Asp, in the active site, and they are critical for the nuclease reaction. The metal ions have long been thought to be zinc ions, but their exact identity has not been examined. Here we present evidence from inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and X-ray diffraction analyses that a mixture of metal ions, including Fe, Zn, and Mn, is present in the active site of CPSF73. The abundance of the various metal ions is different in samples prepared from different expression hosts. Zinc is present at less than 20% abundance in a sample expressed in insect cells, but the sample is active in cleaving a pre-mRNA substrate in a reconstituted canonical 3'-end processing machinery. Zinc is present at 75% abundance in a sample expressed in human cells, which has comparable endonuclease activity. We also observe a mixture of metal ions in the active site of the CPSF73 homolog INTS11, the endonuclease for Integrator. Taken together, our results provide further insights into the role of metal ions in the activity of CPSF73 and INTS11 for RNA 3'-end processing.
We report this research is designed to make progress in overcoming the challenges through the development of a two-stage coal processing. Specifically, a two-stage process was used to maximize the use of the carbon in coal or increase the carbon monoxide yield or lower carbon dioxide and methane yields. Carbon dioxide-char gasification in the absence of water can generate carbon monoxide with near-zero methane, which is desired to produce high-carbon and low-hydrogen chemicals such as oxalic acid through catalytic carbon monoxide coupling and hydrolysis. The technology is applicable to any coal, although Power River Basin (PRB) coal is used as an example feedstock in this research Also, the sodium-iron catalyst can accelerate not only the reaction kinetics in both stages but also increase the hydrogen/carbon monoxide ratio in the syngas produced in the second stage. In other words, the catalyst is a multifunctional agent, which can not only intensify the overall coal process efficiency but also improve the qualities of the desired syngas products and reduce carbon dioxide emission. Thus, In the 1st stage, the catalysts can significantly reduce the CO 2 -char gasification by as high as 75.00%. In the 2nd stage, the H 2 /CO ratio of ideal syngas is ~2:1 with near-0 CH 4 generation and the CH4 production can be reduced as high as 61.29% for the CO 2 –H 2 O-Char coal gasification. The activation energy for the 2nd stage is reduced by as high as 35.43% than that of raw coal without use Na–Fe catalyst. The overall carbon footprint reduction for the study is reduced by 87.33% in the 1st stage and 96.77% compared to the direct coal combustion.
Fiber-optic Distributed Temperature Sensing, when combined with the Single-probe Heat-pulse technique can measure soil moisture (θ) across spatial scales. The key limitation of this system is in obtaining the relationship between soil thermal conductivity (λ) and θ for a specific field. Using the Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) site, this study tested a new methodology to account for the spatial variability in the λ-θ relationship using a Gaussian processes model. The resulting accurate θ measurements (RMSE = 0.03 m 3 m –3 ) were used to characterize the spatial variability of θ across scales and to develop an empirical equation that can correct for the changes in the θ spatial variability observed at different spatial resolutions. In addition, the number of required samples to accurately characterize θ and its variability over scales ranging from 5 m and 350 m were estimated. Finally, these findings provide key information to scale soil moisture from centimeters to hundreds of meters for process understanding.
