Visualization of flows in a motored rotary combustion engine using holographic interferometry

The use of holographic interferometry to view the small- and large-scale flow field structures in the combustion chamber of a motored Wankel engine assembly is described. In order that the flow patterns of interest could be observed, small quantities of helium were injected with the intake air. Variation of the air flow patterns with engine speed, helium flow rate, and rotor position are described. The air flow at two locations within the combustion chamber was examined using this technique.

Development and implementation of an aerodynamic holographic interferometry system

An aerodynamic holographic interferometry system has been developed and adapted for use with an existing supersonic wind tunnel. The basis for the system is briefly discussed, and the flow investigation for which the system was developed is outlined. The system is described, including detailed equipment schematics and cost figures. Some details and guidance are given with regard to experience in reducing the interferometry fringe data via the Abel transformation to obtain density fields and, in turn, velocity fields. Finally, representative results are shown together with complementary laser velocimetry measurements and Navier-Stokes computations.

A dual plate thermoplastic recording device for holographic interferometry

The development of a dual plate holographic interferometer using thermoplastic recording devices is described. The operational characteristics of the thermoplastic devices are investigated and optimized for fringe contrast and signal-to-noise ratio. The dual plate device was demonstrated in a transonic wind tunnel at NASA Ames Research Center. The interferograms derived from the thermoplastic device are compared with those derived from conventional photographic emulsions. The fringe contrast achieved with the optimized thermoplastic device is equivalent to the contrast achieved with conventional techniques.

Exposure compensation for sequential superposition holographic display

A fast and computationally simple computer-aided holographic technique for producing low-information-content 3-D displays by sequential superimposition of point-object Fresnel holograms is described. An exposure control algorithm is used to ensure uniformity of exposure across the sequentially superimposed holograms. The result is a significant increase in the number of recordable object points. The algorithm has been used to produce displays containing up to 2800 individual point exposures.

Implementation of a fast digital optical matrix-vector multiplier using a holographic look-up table and residue arithmetic

The design and implementation of a digital (numerical) optical matrix-vector multiplier are presented. A Hughes liquid crystal light valve, the residue arithmetic representation, and a holographic optical memory are used to construct position coded optical look-up tables. All operations are performed in effectively one light valve response time with a potential for a high information density.

CMOS detector cells for holographic optical interconnects in microcircuits

This paper reports on the characterization of CMOS detectors for holographic optical interconnects in micro circuits. A VLSI temporal response system has been built, which has high-magnification viewing capabilities to facilitate the identification of the sample area under investigation. An isolated photodiode and load circuit has been characterized to determine responsivity, response time, and light spot positioning effects. The threshold of optical gate cells incorporating the above detectors and a transistor inverter stage to couple to other circuitry has been determined. The rise time and fall time of the optical gate cells have also been determined experimentally. The results were compared with the results of SPICE simulation, and show satisfactory agreement. The time delay of optical gate cell output was thus determined to be 70 ns at 10 microW light input. Threshold power was 0.5 microW light input.

Holographic flow field analysis in Spacelab-3 crystal growth experiments

Holographic flow field analysis has been applied in a crystal growth experiment conducted on NASA's space shuttle program on Spacelab-3 during April 29 - May 6,l985. The experimental holograms taken during the crystal growth process are reconstructed into interferograms and later digitized to give refractive-index fields: A comparison has been made with theoretically computed interferograms.

Fast Laser Holographic Interferometry For Wind Tunnels

Proposed system makes holographic interferograms quickly in wind tunnels. Holograms reveal two-dimensional flows around airfoils and provide information on distributions of pressure, structures of wake and boundary layers, and density contours of flow fields. Holograms form quickly in thermoplastic plates in wind tunnel. Plates rigid and left in place so neither vibrations nor photgraphic-development process degrades accuracy of holograms. System processes and analyzes images quickly. Semiautomatic micro-computer-based desktop image-processing unit now undergoing development moves easily to wind tunnel, and its speed and memory adequate for flows about airfoils.

Holographic Reticle

Holographic reticle proposed for use in nondestructive evaluation of surface irregularities. Extends inspection capability to include measurements of depth. Surfaces inspected without contamination, damage, or costly disassembly. Provides valuable information difficult to obtain. For example, surface defects as corrosion and porosity, as well as propagation of cracks, measured accurately. Roughness, wear, and plating thickness also measured. Also used to determine quality of microcircuits.

Flow diagnostics by resonant holographic interferometry

This paper describes a resonant-holographic-interferometry (RHI) technique for nonintrusive flow diagnostics, that relies on the index of refraction variation close to a spectral line. This technique makes it possible to obtain interferograms that are species-selective along with quantitative full-field information for the species under study. The application of the RHI technique to flow fields is analyzed together with measurements of flow parameters such as velocity, pressure, and temperature. The advantages of RHI technique over other nonintrusive diagnostic techniques, such as LIF and planar LIF, are discussed.

Measurement of strains at high temperatures by means of a portable holographic moire camera

Electronic holographic moire is utilized to measure strains at temperatures up to 1000 C. A CW laser operating at 50 mW and at the wavelength of 632.8 nm is used to illuminate the objects under study. The main variables influencing the fringe patterns visibility are discussed and measurements are performed to obtain the values of these variables in the performed experiments. The coefficient of expansion of an alloy is measured at temperatures ranging from 797 C to 986 C. Excellent agreement is found between the measured values and those provided by the manufacturer.

Holographic Interferometry To Measure Three-Dimensional Flow

Double-exposure holography used in studies of transonic flow near rotating blades. In holographic interferometry system, two exposures superimposed on film to produce interferogram. During first exposure, helicopter rotor blade stationary. Second exposure made with blade rotating, at instant blade passes through same position it occupied during stationary exposure. Three-dimensional flow-field density data proves helpful in altering blade geometry to reduce loud impulsive noise generated by transonic flow. Variant of technique used to provide qualitative visualization of three-dimensional flow field.

Real-time dynamic holographic image storage device

A real-time dynamic holographic image storage device uses four-wave mixing in a pair of photorefractive crystals. An oscillation is produced between the crystals which can be maintained indefinitely after the initial object beam is discontinued. The object beam produces an interference pattern in a first crystal to produce phase-conjugated object beam which is directed towards the second crystal. In the second crystal another interference pattern is created which produces a reconstructed object beam. The reconstructed object beam is directed back towards the first crystal. The interference patterns are produced by interaction of the object and phase-conjugated object beam with a read and write beam in each of the crystals. By manipulation of the ratio of the read and write beam intensities in at least one of the crystals, the phase-conjugate or reconstructed object beam output therefrom can be amplified to maintain stable oscillation between the two crystals.

An experimental investigation of circulation control flow fields using holographic interferometry

Experiments are presented which were conducted on flow fields produced by a circulation control airfoil utilizing the Coanda effect at the trailing edge. The application of holographic interferometry to obtain both visualization and quantitative data on the flow field about a circulation control airfoil at transonic flow speed is covered. A brief description of the flow model and measurement techniques is given. The data reduction procedure, results, and interpretation are presented. The results have provided a good deal of information on the character of the flow field, particularly in the neighborhood of the trailing edge. As to the airfoil design, it is apparent that improved performance can be achieved if jet detachment is delayed. Another design improvement would involve the development of an optimum trailing-edge shape for the expected operating Mach and Reynolds number ranges.
