Frequency domain measurement systems

Stable frequency sources and signal processing blocks were characterized by their noise spectra, both discrete and random, in the frequency domain. Conventional measures are outlined, and systems for performing the measurements are described. Broad coverage of system configurations which were found useful is given. Their functioning and areas of application are discussed briefly. Particular attention is given to some of the potential error sources in the measurement procedures, system configurations, double-balanced-mixer-phase-detectors, and application of measuring instruments.

Digital data averager improves conventional measurement system performance

Multipurpose digital averager provides measurement improvement in noisy signal environments. It provides increased measurement accuracy and resolution to basic instrumentation devices by an arithmetical process in real time. It is used with standard conventional measurement equipment and digital data printers.

Thickness measurement system

An FM radar for the measurement of coal thickness wherein an FM transmitter is modulated by the combination of two signals; One, for example, could be a frequency of 100 Hz, and the other a frequency of 15 Hz. A horn-type antenna is used which is filled with a material having a dielectric constant approximating that of coal.

Surface measurement system development

The development of an optical system designed to satisfy the requirements of early deployable concepts such as the LMSC offset wrap rib antenna is reported. The system is relatively lightweight, will measure distance to several targets, and provide data in engineering units in real time. Accuracy of measurements is such that use of the system will permit evaluation of surface quality of large parabolic antenna dishes. Operation of the system was conceptually proven.

Observational Requirements and Measurement Systems Concepts

Six philosophical elements that a measurement strategy for dynamic qualities should contain are: systemic global observations; nested coverage; continuous upgrading of observational capability and testing of promising instrument concepts; orbit considerations; quality control: data validity and management; and data interpretation. The criteria for determining an observational program should include the following: significance of the primary scientific questions, technical readiness; potential of undeveloped techniques, engineering and economic feasibility; and data access and data systems.

Active transmission isolation/rotor loads measurement system

Modifications were incorporated into a helicopter active transmission isolation system to provide the capability of utilizing the system as a rotor force measuring device. These included; (1) isolator redesign to improve operation and minimize friction, (2) installation of pressure transducers in each isolator, and (3) load cells in series with each torque restraint link. Full scale vibration tests performed during this study on a CH-53A helicopter airframe verified that these modifications do not degrade the systems wide band isolation characteristics. Bench tests performed on each isolator unit indicated that steady and transient loads can be measured to within 1 percent of applied load. Individual isolator vibratory load measurement accuracy was determined to be 4 percent. Load measurement accuracy was found to be independent of variations in all basic isolator operating characteristics. Full scale system load calibration tests on the CH-53A airframe established the feasibility of simultaneously providing wide band vibration isolation and accurate measurement of rotor loads. Principal rotor loads (lift, propulsive force, and torque) were measured to within 2 percent of applied load.

Description and operation of a microwave reflectance measurement system

A recent effort at the NASA Lewis Research Center (LeRC), Microwave System Laboratory was to develop the capability to perform farfield reflectance measurements. This effort has resulted, to date, in a system that can perform X-band, monostatic, measurements of test objects. The system and the measurement procedure are described. Data are presented which assists in the evaluation of the quality of the measurements obtained with the system.

Directional emittance surface measurement system and process

Apparatus and process for measuring the variation of directional emittance of surfaces at various temperatures using a radiometric infrared imaging system. A surface test sample is coated onto a copper target plate provided with selective heating within the desired incremental temperature range to be tested and positioned onto a precision rotator to present selected inclination angles of the sample relative to the fixed positioned and optically aligned infrared imager. A thermal insulator holder maintains the target plate on the precision rotator. A screen display of the temperature obtained by the infrared imager, and inclination readings are provided with computer calculations of directional emittance being performed automatically according to equations provided to convert selected incremental target temperatures and inclination angles to relative target directional emittance values. The directional emittance of flat black lacquer and an epoxy resin measurements obtained are in agreement with the predictions of the electromagnetic theory and with directional emittance data inferred from directional reflectance measurements made on a spectrophotometer.

Model Deformation and Optical Angle of Attack Measurement System in the NASA Ames Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel

Both AoA and MDM measurements can be made using an optical system that relies on photogrammetry. Optical measurements are being requested by customers in wind tunnels with increasing frequency due to their non-intrusive nature and recent hardware and software advances that allow measurements to become near real time. The NASA Ames Research Center Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel is currently developing a system based on photogrammetry to measure model deformation and model angle of attack. This paper describes the new system, its development, its use on recent tests and plans to further develop the system.

Strain Gage Measurement System to Determine Cryogenic Propellant Tank Level

Measurement of tank level, particularly for cryogenic propellants, has proven to be a difficult proposition. Current methods based on differential pressure, capacitance sensors, temperature sensors, etc.; do not provide sufficiently accurate or robust measurements, especially at run time. This paper describes a simple, but effective method to determine propellant volume by measuring very small deformations of the structure supporting the tank. Results of a laboratory study to validate the method, and experimental data from a deployed system are presented. A comparison with an existing differential pressure sensor shows that the strain gage system provides a very good quality signal even during pressurization.

System measures response time of photomultiplier tubes

Calibration system enables precise determination of rise time of photosensitive detectors. To perform a calibration, the time-voltage curve of the excitation voltage for a light source is compared with the time-voltage curve of the voltage output from a photosensitive detector which is responding to the light.

Sub-daily resolution of earth rotation variations with Global Positioning System measurements

Data from a worldwide Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking experiment have been used to determine variations in earth rotation (UT1-UTC) over a time period of three weeks. Kalman filtering and smoothing enabled changes in UT1-UTC over intervals of 2 to 24 hrs to be detected with the GPS data. Internal consistency checks and comparisons with other solutions from very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) and satellite laser ranging (SLR) indicate that the GPS UT1-UTC estimates are accurate to about 2 cm. Comparison of GPS-estimated variations in UT1-UTC with 2-hr time resolution over 4 days with predicted variations computed from diurnal and semidiurnal oceanic tidal contributions strongly suggests that the observed periodic sub-daily variations of about 0.1 msec are largely of tidal origin.

Inflight lightning characteristics measurement system

A research data-gathering system being developed for inflight measurement of direct and nearby lightning strike characteristics is described. Wideband analog recorders used to record the lightning scenario are supplemented with high-sample-rate digital transient recorders with augmented memory capacity for increased time resolution of specific times of interest. The endless-loop data storage technique employed by the transient recorders circumvents problems associated with oscilloscopic techniques and allows unattended operation. System integrity and immunity from induced effects is accomplished by fiber-optics signal-transmission links, shielded system enclosures, and the use of a dynamotor for power system isolation.
