Epitaxial Core/Shell Nanocrystals of (Europium-Doped) Zirconia and Hafnia

A careful design of the nanocrystal architecture can strongly enhance the nanocrystal function. So far, this strategy has faced a synthetic bottleneck in the case of refractory oxides. Here we demonstrate the epitaxial growth of hafnia shells onto zirconia cores and pure zirconia shells onto europium-doped zirconia cores. The core/shell structures are fully crystalline. Upon shelling, the optical properties of the europium dopant are dramatically improved (featuring a more uniform coordination and a longer photoluminescence lifetime), indicating the suppression of nonradiative pathways. These results launch the stable zirconium and hafnium oxide hosts as alternatives for the established NaYF 4 systems.

Beyond single crystals: Imaging rubrene polymorphism across crystalline batches through lattice phonon Raman microscopy

Polymorphism is an issue troubling numerous scientific fields. A phenomenon where molecules can arrange in different orientations in a crystal lattice, polymorphism in the field of organic photovoltaic materials can dramatically change electronic properties of these materials. Rubrene is a benchmark photovoltaic material showing high carrier mobility in only one of its three polymorphs. To use rubrene in devices, it is important to quantify the polymorph distribution arising from a particular crystal growth method. However, current methods for characterizing polymorphism are either destructive or inefficient for batch scale characterization. Lattice phonon Raman spectroscopy has the ability to distinguish between polymorphs based on low frequency intermolecular vibrations. Here, we present here the addition of microscopy to lattice phonon Raman spectroscopy, which allows us to not only characterize polymorphs efficiently and nondestructively through Raman spectroscopy but also concurrently gain information on the size and morphology of the polymorphs. We provide examples for how this technique can be used to perform large, batch scale polymorph characterization for crystals grown from solution and physical vapor transport. We end with a case study showing how Raman microscopy can be used to efficiently optimize a green crystal growth method, selecting for large orthorhombic crystals desired for rubrene electronic device applications.

Thermally driven phase transition of halide perovskites revealed by big data-powered in situ electron microscopy

Halide perovskites are promising light-absorbing materials for high-efficiency solar cells, while the crystalline phase of halide perovskites may influence the device’s efficiency and stability. In this work, we investigated the thermally driven phase transition of perovskite (CsPbIxBr3—x), which was confirmed by electron diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy results. CsPbIxBr3—x transitioned from δ phase to α phase when heated, and the γ phase was obtained when the sample was cooled down. The γ phase was stable as long as it was isolated from humidity and air. A template matching-based data analysis method enabled visualization of the thermally driven phase evolution of perovskite during heating. Here, we also proposed a possible atomic movement in the process of phase transition based on our in situ heating experimental data. The results presented here may improve our understanding of the thermally driven phase transition of perovskite as well as provide a protocol for big-data analysis of in situ experiments.

Comparing first-principles density functionals plus corrections for the lattice dynamics of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6

The enigmatic mechanism underlying unconventional high-temperature superconductivity, especially the role of lattice dynamics, has remained a subject of debate. Theoretical insights have long been hindered due to the lack of an accurate first-principles description of the lattice dynamics of cuprates. Recently, using the r2SCAN meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) functional, we have been able to achieve accurate phonon spectra of an insulating cuprate YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6 and discover significant magnetoelastic coupling in experimentally interesting Cu–O bond stretching optical modes [Ning et al., Phys. Rev. B 107, 045126 (2023)]. We extend this work by comparing Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof and r2SCAN performances with corrections from the on-site Hubbard U and the D4 van der Waals (vdW) methods, aiming at further understanding on both the materials science side and the density functional side. We demonstrate the importance of vdW and self-interaction corrections for accurate first-principles YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6 lattice dynamics. Since r2SCAN by itself partially accounts for these effects, the good performance of r2SCAN is now more fully explained. Finally, in addition, the performances of the Tao–Mo series of meta-GGAs, which are constructed in a different way from the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA and its revised version r2SCAN, are also compared and discussed.

Quantifying CTFE content in FK-800 using ATR-FTIR and time to peak crystallization

The chlorotrifluoroethylene (CTFE) content in vinylidene fluoride (VDF)-CTFE copolymers greatly influences the chemical and physical properties and ultimately determines the application. The copolymer known as FK-800 has a VDF:CTFE ratio of ~1:3 and is used almost exclusively as the binder in the insensitive high explosive (HE) formulation PBX 9502. Due to the dangerous nature of HE work and the effect CTFE content variations have, the ability to quickly and easily quantify CTFE content is of interest. Two techniques, attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and time to peak crystallization measured by heat flow calorimetry, were evaluated here as potential means for quantifying CTFE content. Based on the certificate of analyses (COAs), FK-800 lots with varied CTFE content encompassing the range historically used in HE applications were used as standards for both methodologies. For FTIR, a linear regression was performed on the peak area of the C-Cl IR stretch and the CTFE content; the methodology was then demonstrated on four samples, two lots of unadulterated material and material recovered from two HE samples. The calculated CTFE content and COAs were in good agreement for all four samples. Heat flow calorimetry revealed the relationship between time to peak crystallization and CTFE content was best fit by a power regression; the methodology was then tested on two different FK-800 lots. Only one sample showed good agreement between the calculated CTFE content and the COA. This discrepancy indicates the method developed is not suitable for quantifying CTFE, but provides valuable insight regarding the crystallization behavior of VDF-CTFE copolymers.

Influence of dislocations and twin walls in BaTiO 3 on the voltage-controlled switching of perpendicular magnetization

In this work, we investigate the influence of dislocations and twin walls in BaTiO 3 on its ferroelectric response and the resulting effect on the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) of a strain-coupled [Co\Ni] n film. A dense twinned structure in conjunction with a high dislocation density significantly reduces the converse piezoelectric effect of BaTiO 3 by hindering the propagation of newly nucleated domains with an applied electric field. This, in turn, results in a modest reduction of the PMA of the ferromagnetic layer. On the other hand, the ferroelectric polarization reorients from [100] to [001] direction in a dislocation-free BaTiO 3 , inducing the maximum achievable in-plane compressive strain of 1.1%. A large fraction of this uniaxial strain is transferred to the magnetoelastically coupled ferromagnetic layers whose magnetization switches to in plane via the inverse magnetostriction effect. This work reveals the critical role of the interplay between twin walls and dislocations within a ferroelectric substrate in the performance of multiferroic heterostructures and provides insight into the development of highly energy-efficient magnetoelectric devices.

Structural analysis of wild-type and Val120Thr mutant Candida boidinii formate dehydrogenase by X-ray crystallography

Candida boidinii NAD + -dependent formate dehydrogenase (CbFDH) has gained significant attention for its potential application in the production of biofuels and various industrial chemicals from inorganic carbon dioxide. The present study reports the atomic X-ray crystal structures of wild-type CbFDH at cryogenic and ambient temperatures, as well as that of the Val120Thr mutant at cryogenic temperature, determined at the Turkish Light Source ‘Turkish DeLight’. The structures reveal new hydrogen bonds between Thr120 and water molecules in the active site of the mutant CbFDH, suggesting increased stability of the active site and more efficient electron transfer during the reaction. Further experimental data is needed to test these hypotheses. Collectively, these findings provide invaluable insights into future protein-engineering efforts that could potentially enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of CbFDH.

Novel Ultrafast Lu2O3:Yb Ceramics for Future HEP Applications

Inorganic scintillators activated by charge transfer luminescence Yb3+ are considered promising ultrafast material to break the ps timing barrier for future high energy physics applications. Inorganic scintillators in ceramic form are potentially more cost-effective than crystals because of their lower fabrication temperature and no need for aftergrowth mechanical processing. This paper reports an investigation on Lu2O3:Yb and Lu2xY2(1−x)O3:Yb scintillating ceramic samples fabricated by Radiation Monitoring Devices Inc. All samples show X-ray excited luminescence peaked at 370 nm. Ultrafast decay time of 1.1 ns was observed by using a microchannel plate-photomultiplier tube-based test bench at Caltech. Considering its intrinsic high density (9.4 g/cm3), Lu2O3:Yb ceramics are promising for future time of fight application for high energy physics experiments.

Benzoimidazolium-derived dimeric and hydride n-dopants for organic electron-transport materials: impact of substitution on structures, electrochemistry, and reactivity

1,3-Dimethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzo[ d ]imidazoles, 1H , and 1,1',3,3'-tetramethyl-2,2',3,3'-tetrahydro-2,2'-bibenzo[ d ]imidazoles, 1 2 , are of interest as n-dopants for organic electron-transport materials. Salts of 2-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)-4,7-dimethoxy-, 2-cyclohexyl-4,7-dimethoxy-, and 2-(5-(dimethylamino)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[ d ]imidazolium ( 1g–i + , respectively) have been synthesized and reduced with NaBH 4 to 1gH , 1hH , and 1iH , and with Na:Hg to 1g 2 and 1h 2 . Their electrochemistry and reactivity were compared to those derived from 2-(4-(dimethylamino)phenyl)- ( 1b + ) and 2-cyclohexylbenzo[ d ]imidazolium ( 1e + ) salts. E ( 1 + / 1 • ) values for 2-aryl species are less reducing than for 2-alkyl analogues, i.e., the radicals are stabilized more by aryl groups than the cations, while 4,7-dimethoxy substitution leads to more reducing E ( 1 + / 1 • ) values, as well as cathodic shifts in E ( 1 2 •+ / 1 2 ) and E ( 1H •+ / 1H ) values. Both the use of 3,4-dimethoxy and 2-aryl substituents accelerates the reaction of the 1H species with PC 61 BM. Because 2-aryl groups stabilize radicals, 1b 2 and 1g 2 exhibit weaker bonds than 1e 2 and 1h 2 and thus react with 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene ( VII ) via a “cleavage-first” pathway, while 1e 2 and 1h 2 react only via “electron-transfer-first”. 1h 2 exhibits the most cathodic E ( 1 2 •+ / 1 2 ) value of the dimers considered here and, therefore, reacts more rapidly than any of the other dimers with VII via “electron-transfer-first”. Crystal structures show rather long central C–C bonds for 1b 2 (1.5899(11) and 1.6194(8) Å) and 1h 2 (1.6299(13) Å).

Programmable 3D Hexagonal Geometry of DNA Tensegrity Triangles

Non-canonical interactions in DNA remain under-explored in DNA nanotechnology. Recently, many structures with non-canonical motifs have been discovered, notably a hexagonal arrangement of typically rhombohedral DNA tensegrity triangles that forms through non-canonical sticky end interactions. Here, in this study, we find a series of mechanisms to program a hexagonal arrangement using: the sticky end sequence; triangle edge torsional stress; and crystallization condition. We showcase cross-talking between Watson–Crick and non-canonical sticky ends in which the ratio between the two dictates segregation by crystal forms or combination into composite crystals. Finally, we develop a method for reconfiguring the long-range geometry of formed crystals from rhombohedral to hexagonal and vice versa. These data demonstrate fine control over non-canonical motifs and their topological self-assembly. This will vastly increase the programmability, functionality, and versatility of rationally designed DNA constructs.

Discrete Open-Shell Tris(bipyridinium radical cationic) Inclusion Complexes in the Solid State

In the solid state the properties of organic radicals depend heavily on radical-radical interactions that are influenced by the superstructure of the crystalline phase. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of a substituted tetracationic cyclophane, cyclobis(paraquat-p-1,4- dimethoxyphenylene), and outline how its bisradical dicationic redox state associates with the methyl viologen radical cation (MV •+ ) to give a trisradical tricationic inclusion complex. The (super)structures of the reduced cyclophane and this 1:1 complex in the solid-state deviate from the analogous (super)structures observed for the reduced state of cyclobis(paraquat-p-phenylene) and that of its trisradical tricationic complex. Titration experiments with a range of guests reveal that the methoxy substituents on the para-xylenyl do not influence significantly of the binding affinity of the cyclophane for small neutral guests, whereas the affinity decreases by an order of magnitude for larger radical cationic guests such as MV •+ . X-Ray diffraction reveals that the solid- state structures of the tricationic trisradical complexes to be a discrete entity with weak intermolecular orbital overlap between the neighboring complexes. Transient nutation EPR experiment and DFT calculations confirm that the complex has a doublet spin configuration in the ground state as a result of the strong orbital overlap within the complex, while the quartet-state spin configuration is higher in energy and so is inaccessible at ambient temperature. The superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurement reveals that trisradical tricationic complexes interact antiferromagnetically (J/k = - 2.33 K) and form a 1D Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain along the a-axis in the crystal. Furthermore, these results offer new insights into the design and synthesis of organic magnetic materials based on host-guest inclusion complexes.

Crystal Structure and Properties of Layered Pnictides BaCuSi2Pn3 (Pn = P, As)

Two novel layered compounds BaCuSi 2 Pn 3 (Pn = P, As) adopting new structure types are reported. As revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, both compounds are composed of unique Cu–Si–Pn layers featuring CuPn 3 and Si 2 Pn 6 structural motifs found in other archetypal pnictide materials. The stacking of the isostructural Cu–Si–Pn layers is different for phosphide and arsenide compounds. Synthesis from elements aided by in situ synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction resulted in the obtainment of bulk powders with a minimized amount of admixtures. Experimentally measured physical properties of BaCuSi 2 As 3 unexpectedly showed metal-like behavior at temperatures above 15 K, despite the fact that density functional theory calculations predict a small band gap of 0.4 eV. BaCuSi 2 As 3 exhibits ultralow thermal conductivity, which can be explained by the combination of a layered crystal structure with alternating covalent and ionic bonding, which feature rattling of Cu atoms similar to that in tetrahedrites.

Design Principles for the Synthesis of Self-Pillared ZSM-5 Zeolite Nanosheets

The design of next-generation materials for emerging energy and environmental applications heavily relies on empirical approaches to direct nonclassical nucleation and crystal growth pathways, polymorphism, intercrystalline transformations, and seed-assisted growth processes. A long-standing obstacle to nanoporous materials design is the complexity of their crystallization, which hinders the development of predictive models and/or physical descriptors that can guide their synthesis. In this study, we use a combination of state-of-the-art synthesis, characterization, and computational design to prepare hierarchical MFI-type zeolites, which we couple with benchmark catalytic testing to assess structure-property-performance relationships. These hierarchical materials are intergrowths of two commercially relevant zeolite frameworks, MFI and MEL, prepared as self-pillared pentasil (SPP) zeolites through seed-assisted, organic-free syntheses for which little theoretical guidance existed. Here, by comparing a large library of zeolite seeds with different pore sizes, dimensions, and structural composite building units, we determined the relative impact of seed and silica source selection, among other synthesis variables. Combined experimental and computational studies are used to test several hypotheses in literature to rationalize the choice of seed structure and establish a more robust selection criteria for seed-assisted synthesis of zeolites. Specifically, we show that a data-driven approach to develop structural descriptors correlates to new, facile routes to rationally design SPP zeolites, addressing knowledge gaps in the fundamental understanding of (non)classical crystal growth mechanisms that are characteristic of nanoporous aluminosilicates.
