High-Q superconducting lumped-element resonators for low-mass axion searches

Low-frequency superconducting lumped-element resonators have recently attracted significant attention in the context of axion dark matter searches. Here, we present the design and implementation of a fixed-frequency superconducting resonator operating near 250 kHz, possessing an inductor volume of ∼1 liter and achieving an unloaded quality factor Q ≈ 2.1 × 10 6 . This resonator represents a significant improvement over the state of the art and informs the design of searches for low-mass axions.

Topographic effects on reflected acoustic waves from the OSIRIS-REx reentry observed from stratospheric balloons

During long-distance sound propagation in planetary atmospheres, acoustic waves may reflect off the air/surface interface one or more times. For low sound frequencies and flat interfaces, the incident and reflected wave tend to be nearly identical. However, this may not be the case when the downgoing acoustic wave encounters topography. Here, we describe a set of direct and reflected acoustic signals recorded on free-flying balloons during the hypersonic entry of the OSIRIS-REx sample return capsule (SRC). In two of the three cases presented here, an impulsive reflected arrival similar in form to the direct sonic boom of the SRC is observed, followed by a diffuse coda. In contrast, one of the floating stations lacked an impulsive reflection entirely, with only the coda present. We use full waveform modeling to show how reflection in the presence of complex topography can explain coda seen in all three examples as well as the lack of impulsive arrival on the third. Our results indicate that the complex signals often observed in long range acoustic propagation could be due, in part, to interactions with topography during transmission.

Synthesis and investigation into explosive sensitivity for a series of new picramide explosives

Tailoring the molecular properties that govern energetic material sensitivity is essential to improve safety and help develop new energetic materials. Despite this need, understanding the complex chemistry and physics of explosive initiation and propagation is still a challenge. Recent work by our group has reinforced the view that explosive sensitivity under sub-shock conditions is connected to the strength of the weakest covalent bond in the molecule, that is, its “trigger linkage.” These correlations have been observed with different classes of energetic molecules and indicate that “trigger linkage” bond breaking, and heat of explosion are good indicators for the sensitivity trends. Herein we report the synthesis of aliphatic energetic materials with ethane, propane and neopentane backbones. Experimental and computational studies show that the trigger linkage model, based on results from quantum molecular dynamics simulations, correctly predicts trends observed in the impact sensitivity of the molecules. However, while the model predicts the impact sensitivities of the ethane series, the neopentane series has higher impact sensitivities than predicted, which is presumably influenced by crystal packing effects.

Agentic workflow enables the recovery of critical materials from complex feedstocks via selective precipitation

We present a multi-agentic workflow for critical materials recovery that deploys a series of AI agents and automated instruments to recover critical materials from produced water and magnet leachates. This approach achieves selective precipitation from real-world feedstocks using simple chemicals, accelerating the development of efficient, adaptable, and scalable separations to a timeline of days, rather than months and years.

An Assessment of the Nevada Test Site for Low-Level Waste Management

This report presents a summary of description information, facilities, and operating practices at the Nevada Test Site. It is concluded that NTS is not only a feasible location for surface and near-surface storage of low-level wastes, but also a potential site for underground storage of higher level wastes.

Recent Progress in the Electroweak Structure of Light Nuclei Using Quantum Monte Carlo Methods

Nuclei will play a prominent role in searches for physics beyond the Standard Model as the active material in experiments. In order to reliably interpret new physics signals, one needs an accurate model of the underlying nuclear dynamics. In this review, we discuss recent progress made with quantum Monte Carlo approaches for calculating the electroweak structure of light nuclei. We place particular emphasis on recent β decay, muon capture, neutrinoless double β decay, and electron scattering results.

Security Constrained Economic Optimization of Photovoltaic and Other Distributed Assets

The rapid growth of distributed energy resources (DERs), especially photovoltaic (PV) systems, has introduced new complexities in maintaining grid reliability, stability, and cost-effective operation. This project addresses these challenges by developing and demonstrating a scalable GridOS Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) that enables secure, real-time optimization and control of DERs at the distribution feeder level.
