RF antenna-pattern visual aids for field use

Series of plots must be made of antenna pattern on polar-coordinate sheet depicting vertical planes. Separate sheets are plotted depicting antenna patterns in vertical plane at azimuth positions. After all polar plots are drawn, they are labeled according to their azimuthal positions. Transparencies are then stiffened with regular wire, cardboard, or molded plastic.

Large-scale solar magnetic fields and H-alpha patterns

Coronal and interplanetary magnetic fields computed from measurements of large-scale photospheric magnetic fields suffer from interruptions in day-to-day observations and the limitation of using only measurements made near the solar central meridian. Procedures were devised for inferring the lines of polarity reversal from H-alpha solar patrol photographs that map the same large-scale features found on Mt. Wilson magnetograms. These features may be monitored without interruption by combining observations from the global network of observatories associated with NOAA's Space Environment Services Center. The patterns of inferred magnetic fields may be followed accurately as far as 60 deg from central meridian. Such patterns will be used to improve predictions of coronal features during the next solar eclipse.

Pattern recognition: A basis for remote sensing data analysis

The theoretical basis for the pattern-recognition-oriented algorithms used in the multispectral data analysis software system is discussed. A model of a general pattern recognition system is presented. The receptor or sensor is usually a multispectral scanner. For each ground resolution element the receptor produces n numbers or measurements corresponding to the n channels of the scanner.

Moire patterns and two-dimensional aliasing in line scanner data acquisition systems

The basic mechanism underlying the generation of Moire patterns in line scanner data acquisition systems is examined. A general expression is developed in terms of typical system parameters for the reproduced image of such systems and the interaction of the image spectrum; the raster frequency and digital sampling frequency of the A/D conversion process are discussed and examples given. Systems design requirements for avoiding Moire pattern generation and two-dimensional aliasing are discussed.

Propagation pattern of interplanetary shock waves associated with solar proton flares

The two dimensional pattern of interplanetary shock waves is deduced by taking into account the solar longitude dependence of the time intervals between SSC geomagnetic storms and responsible flares. This pattern near the earth's orbit is not symmetric with respect to the meridian plane which crosses the position of the flare, and the highest speed of this wave propagation is observed in the direction about 30 degrees east of this meridian plane. The magnitude of the Forbush decreases of galactic cosmic rays also varies with the longitude positions of those flares. This is used to estimate the distribution of magnetic fields behind the shock waves.

Recognition of surface lithologic and topographic patterns in southwest Colorado with ADP techniques

Analysis of ERTS-1 multispectral data by automatic pattern recognition procedures is applicable toward grappling with current and future resource stresses by providing a means for refining existing geologic maps. The procedures used in the current analysis already yield encouraging results toward the eventual machine recognition of extensive surface lithologic and topographic patterns. Automatic mapping of a series of hogbacks, strike valleys, and alluvial surfaces along the northwest flank of the San Juan Basin in Colorado can be obtained by minimal man-machine interaction. The determination of causes for separable spectral signatures is dependent upon extensive correlation of micro- and macro field based ground truth observations and aircraft underflight data with the satellite data.

Interference patterns of a horizontal electric dipole over layered dielectric media.

Interference patterns for electromagnetic fields due to a subsurface reflector below a layered lossy dielectric are calculated with the geometrical optics approximation for use in interpreting data to be collected on the moon by Apollo 17 as well as data currently being obtained on terrestrial glaciers. The radiating antenna lies on the surface. All six field components are calculated and studied. For the endfire solutions, the peak of the first reflected wave is found to be different from that of the broadside ones. To facilitate a physical discussion, we plotted the radiation patterns due to the antenna on the surface.

FORTRAN 4 programs for summarization and analysis of fracture trace and lineament patterns

Systematic and detailed analysis of lineament and fracture trace patterns has long been neglected because of the large number of observations involved in such an analysis. Three FORTRAN 4 programs were written to facilitate this manipulation. TRANSFORM converts the initial fracture map data into a format compatible with AZMAP, whose options allow repetitive manipulation of the data for optimization of the analysis. ROSE creates rose diagrams of the fracture patterns suitable for map overlays and tectonic interpretation. Examples are given and further analysis techniques using output from these programs are discussed.

Synthesis of multiple shaped beam antenna patterns

Results are presented of research into the problem of finding an excitation of a given antenna such that the desired radiation pattern is approximated to within acceptable limits. This is to be done in such a fashion that boundary conditions involving hardware limitations may be inserted into the problem. The intended application is synthesis of multiple shaped beam antennas. Since this is perhaps the most difficult synthesis problem an antenna engineer is likely to encounter, the approach taken was to include as a by-product capability for synthesizing simpler patterns. The synthesis technique has been almost totally computerized. The class of antennas which may be synthesized with the computer program are those which may be represented as planar (continuous or discrete) current distributions. The technique is not limited in this sense and could indeed by extended to include, for example, the synthesis of conformal arrays or current distributions on the surface of reflectors. The antenna types which the program is set up to synthesize are: line source, rectangular aperture, circular aperture, linear array, rectangular array, and arbitrary planar array.

Experimental investigation of the braking and cornering characteristics of 30 x 11.5-14.5, type 8, aircraft tires with different tread patterns

An investigation was conducted at the aircraft landing loads and traction facility to study the braking and cornering characteristics, including the drag-force and cornering-force friction coefficients, of 30 by 11.5-14.5, type VIII aircraft tires with five different tread patterns. Test data were obtained on dry, damp, and flooded runway surfaces over a range of yaw angles from 0 deg to 12 deg at ground speeds from 5 knots to 100 knots. The results of this investigation indicate that a tread pattern consisting of transverse cuts across the entire width of the tread slightly improved the tire traction performance on wet surfaces. The braking and cornering capability of the tires was degraded by thin-film lubrication and tire hydroplaning effects on the wet runway surfaces. The braking capability of the tires decreased when the yaw angle was increased.

Expansion pattern of flare-associated disturbances near the earth's orbit during October 23 to November 4, 1968

A series of solar flares accompanying type II and type IV radio bursts were observed while the active region McMath No. 9740 was on the solar disk. Most of these flares were also associated with solar cosmic rays and SSC geomagnetic storms. The expansion pattern of these disturbances near the earth's orbit is considered. This pattern appears to be useful for studying the propagation of interplanetary shock waves which are generated by solar flares.

On the formation of the lunar herringbone pattern

The V-shaped ridge components of the lunar herringbone pattern are simulated by simultaneous and nearly simultaneous impact cratering in the laboratory. The results of the simulations, together with a mathematical model developed for the case of simultaneous impacts, indicate that the pattern resulted from simultaneous impact formation of adjacent secondary craters. In addition, preliminary experimental results suggest that many secondaries of the crater Copernicus were produced by fragments that impacted either simultaneously or nearly simultaneously with the uprange fragments impacting first, at angles greater than 60 deg measured from the normal to the surface.

The surface geometry of inherited joint and fracture trace patterns resulting from active and passive deformation

Hypothetical models are considered for detecting subsurface structure from the fracture or joint pattern, which may be influenced by the structure and propagated to the surface. Various patterns of an initially orthogonal fracture grid are modeled according to active and passive deformation mechanisms. In the active periclinal structure with a vertical axis, fracture frequency increased both over the dome and basin, and remained constant with decreasing depth to the structure. For passive periclinal features such as a reef or sand body, fracture frequency is determined by the arc of curvature and showed a reduction over the reefmound and increased over the basin.
